Islands, 2007: Elephant Bar was across the street. A bustling Sears anchored the mall. I could have taken a blurry picture of my food with my pink Razr.
Before earlier this year, I hadn't been to Islands Burbank since the late Aughties, but I'm happy to report it's still a fun spot for a burger. We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon after a movie at the AMC. There were plenty of families, but there was no wait, and we were seated in a quiet area by ourselves. We ordered the tropical drink flight - Deep Blue Sea, Mai Tai, Big Island Iced Tea, Ship Wreck. They were all delicious, and surprisingly (as I don't usually like Long Island iced teas), the Big Island Iced Tea was the best.
We ordered burgers, the Malibu (bacon burger) and the Kilauea, which was a "jalapeño and black pepper-crusted patty" with jack cheese, chipotle aioli, and "Island Reds" - fried red onions. They gave me a Mauna Loa-sized heap of the Island Reds, most of which I scraped to the side. The spice-packed patty overpowered many bites of the burger with a dense peppercorn taste. Overall, it was a nice burger - a dollop of ketchup offset the peppery taste somewhat. Both sides of fries were hot and crisp, served with a thick, smoky BBQ sauce.
We'd come back to try more menu items. So many chains have come and gone throughout downtown Burbank, but I'm glad this one is still there. Mahalo.
