The Awkward Dinner Guide

"Perfect For: Dining when you both know the relationship is over. At this point, things are so toxic, neither of you knows who to blame for what anymore. But you’re hungry and kind of want a burger with teriyaki sauce dumped on top of it. Get to your nearest Islands for passable times and burgers with no less than 10 toppings on them. Your waitress will definitely make eyes at you, which will feel good in the moment, but suddenly you can’t find your girlfriend, and you realize you’re taking an Uber home." - jess basser sanders, brant cox

As someone who grew up in San Diego, where Islands is based out of, I have had this restaurant countless times growing up. In high school we used to all go here often until Cheesecake Factory replaced it for us, but it also was a frequent stop during college and a lot of my 20s. It’s very nostalgic to me and it had been years since I last had Islands but this past weekend we stopped in for lunch and I am happy to report that the flavors taste exactly the same. This location is attached to the Howard Hughes Center and parking is free for the first 90 minutes and then after that it starts to climb. However, you’re able to park right next-door in the underground parking so it’s not a far walk to the restaurant from your car. Inside of this restaurant is quite large and they have many different seating options and cozy tucked away booths. I love the design on the inside and really feels like a surf and island vibe. Our waitress was very polite and as usual everything that we ordered came out very fast. I will say that one of the downsides is the pricing is quite high for what you get. For a table of two it was about $75 for a cup of soup, two burgers, and two drinks. I think that is what has scared away a lot of people and forced a lot of their locations to close. I was happy to see that the menu had all the classics on it and a few more new ones. As always, I started with the Chicken Tortilla Soup because it’s honestly delicious and one version that I really like. It’s very hearty and has a lot of chicken in it. For my burger, I chose the Bluenami and added avocado and thought it was great. I usually do the Maui so I wanted to try something different. I’m glad that I ordered it. The fries weren’t as good as I remember, but some things are just like that. We also tried their new strawberry cream soda, and I did like it. Wish they would do free refills of it though. Overall, I would recommend if you are looking for a place with great burgers and a lot of drink options in a casual atmosphere. Just know that the price can be a bit more than you’re expecting but overall we had a really nice lunch.

My kids that are almost adults was raised at this location on chicken tenders, salad and etc. since 2011. Where in fact my son (pictured) first paycheck was at this restaurant. This location is Cheers to me and the family in my life as every one knows your name. Shout out to Frankie (Manager), Apollo (Manager), Linda (Manager). Bartenders Miguel, Mia, Chris, Dash, Alex, Patrick, Evon and a host of others like Eric and AJ.

It's been years since I had Islands! Moved away some time ago and couldn't wait to be back here in California to enjoy all the good food! Islands was one of the main places I really wanted to go! Took the wife and we made it a date! Burger was just as good as I remembered, and the fries were on point! I swear the burgers used to be bigger and the fries were bottomless! But that was 25 years ago! Still one of my favorite places to eat! Highly recommend!

Food is pretty good, service a little slow. They forgot my drink, but it happens... restaurant was extremely cold and not sure if that was something put in place to hide odor or what was going on, but it was a good 65°F in the joint. Definitely tequila weather. Maybe the walk-in freezer had a leak IDK... Oh also the margarita tasted like a dollar store clearance can of swill... It might be a good idea to invest in a better quality margarita mix guys. Yuck.

I buy to go here regularly during lunch hour and it's great! I order online and by the time I walk there it's ready! The Double Stack burger is delicious, always fresh and always cooked just perfect, NEVER overcooked and dry. Their lunch burger deal beats out all of the nationwide burger joints in price, portion size, and above all quality, freshness and taste. I also like their Toucan sandwich, it is pretty unique and very good! Their fries are also fantastic even without salt, which is how I order mine all the time! I have to thank the kitchen staff, because they're always spot on and deliver with care a nice presentable meal that looks as good as it tastes! The staff is also amazing, from the host to the servers and Manager, everyone is always nice, friendly, courteous and welcoming! And finally, the restaurant has a pretty unique Hawaiian theme, always has great music and it is always spotless. Well done everyone!

I tend to stop by nearly every day, as the restaurant is close by, yet outside of the home where I can enjoy lunch and continue to work and read. The restaurant is always well prepared and ready for customers even if they show up early. The presentation when I walk in is always clean and in order, including the bathrooms. I’m always greeted with a friendly smile and the door is always opened for me. Another detail that I can appreciate is everyone for the most part always remember my name and set me up in my usual spot. Service and food is spectacular and I’ve never had an issue with the food. Service is very prompt and the servers make that all is well and do I need anything additional. The friendly atmosphere and chats keep me uplifted and is by far one of the main reasons why I continue to return to their location almost every day. RH >)))’>

Island's is one of my favorite local restaurants in LA. I often take friends from NJ here. The Kona pie, a mocha ice cream cake, is spectacular! I had one for the first time in almost seven years, and it's just as good as I remember.

I recently visited Islands and ordered the Yaki Tacos with pineapple and teriyaki chicken, which were delicious and flavorful. We also had a burger that was cooked perfectly and tasted great. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly service made for an enjoyable experience overall.
