Best Restaurants in Clayton, Georgia, in the North Georgia Mountains | Eater Atlanta

"A towering roughly 100-foot waterfall reached by a short, accessible walk from an unpaved parking area and picnic spot; a modest parking/entry fee (around $2) grants access to an overhanging viewing platform for close-up vistas." - Robbie Medwed

Beautiful waterfall!😍 I choose to climb down where you can view the waterfall. That way I can get a better picture. Be careful if you decide to climb down. There is also a tunnel you can go see not far from the falls. That was cool to see.

Not really a bad hike to the viewing platform but the trees block quite a bit of the falls.

A short hike to this amazing view of Issaqueena Falls. Right next to Stumphouse Tunnel, there are signboards that show directions. The place has a rich history and is a rich natural heritage in South Carolina. Loved the place and enjoyed a moderate hike down to the falls! Ideal to spend some me time here! I would highly recommend visiting it in the spring season.

Beautiful area with a historic tale. The trip down to the bottom of the falls is extremely steep and not for everybody but just the short trail to the lookout area is worth the time. The views are incredible. Great place to spend the afternoon and have a picnic.

You can barely see the falls from the upper observation deck otherwise all the scenery around the upper area and looking out from the upper observation day are great banana is a very Steep and long walk down to the base of the falls where you may have a better look at The Falls

Nice easy drive from I 85 from Fairplay SC. Plenty of parking and a short hike. If you're adventurous the way down is not bad, if it's dry. I had a walking stick which helped. Pick your way carefully and you'll be fine. Beautiful view from the bottom. Highly recommend the short drive from Fairplay, about 45 minutes. Check out the Stumphouse tunnel while there. Hiking and mountain biking at the Palmetto Trail. Picnic area and non flush restrooms. Better than nothing. Can get busy. Glad I went. Kid friendly and pets too.

These falls paired with the Stumphouse Tunnel make for a great day trip. It's a short walk to the top of the falls and the overlook. The hike down to the bottom of the waterfall is a little tough. My 5yo little girl did it mostly by herself, but def plan on assisting small kids down. Cool little pool at the bottom of the waterfall. We did see a water snake down there so keep your eyes peeled while playing.

I wish there was an easier way to get closer to the falls, it's very steep and covered in fallen leaves right now other than that it's gorgeous here. There is a pathway to an observation deck so you can still see the falls which is nice. There's also 3 or 4 little picnic tables nearby

Yelp
Another beautiful waterfall. You can see it from the viewing areas but if you want to see it up close, you will have to go off-trail where people have made their own. Just know this can be difficult for some people and requires holding onto roots and pulling yourself up or slowly sliding down. Good shoes are definitely recommended. If you're not used to the area, the change in elevation might make it a little more difficult. Definitely bring water!! It would be nice at some point if they made steps down to the falls so more people could access it.

Yelp
Issaqueena Falls was one of the last waterfalls we went to on the last Hiking Yelp Event hosted by Richard and Jamarcus which was also my first one. Not only my first Hiking Event but also my first time hiking. This time these guys took us to chase waterfalls to Walhalla, South Carolina. Definitely a great choice with beautiful views (which is why I live for, great views). The itinerary consisted on the following waterfalls: Station Cove Falls King Creek Falls Spoonauger Falls *Issaqueena Falls Yellow Branch Falls Issaqueena was one of my favorites. The hike isn't too long. You can literally hear the waterfall from the parking lot. There is a viewpoint where you can get a beautiful shots of the whole waterfall. I got some good ones of myself since I took my selfie stick with me that day. Right next to it, there's the trail to go down to the waterfall. This type of trail was more of a "rock climbing" in a sense and I freaking loved it. Issaqueena was definitely one of my favorites places we visited on the trip. A must see if you're in town. I think it's great for everyone including children. I didn't realize how easy hiking can be. There are indications and marks all over the place to help people follow the right way. My group was super experimented but I feel it would be totally fine for beginners too. No worries. I had so much fun on this event and I discovered what can be my new passion. Shoutout to Richard and his wife Dani for being so helpful and awesome. Every single person at the group was super nice too and willing to wait for me when i was getting too slow. LOL. Thanks y'all. Can't wait for the nexts events coming up.

Yelp
Beautiful waterfall just outside of Wahalla, SC. Not the tallest falls but worth a look if you're nearby. It's a cascading falls in the woods with a viewing area halfway down to one side. There is a dirt path to the bottom, which isn't too long, but the trek can be difficult for some. Entry has a $5 per car fee which is on the honor system (drop box only). Just down the road inside the same park service area is the Stumphouse Tunnel, which is a carved-out tunnel through the rock, with the end bricked-up (basically a dark, wet tunnel to nowhere).

Yelp
Short hike, beautiful, tall waterfall. Small parking lot though. No restrooms. The trail ends at an overlook. However, you could go even closer. The trail going down is pretty steep. Coming up, had to use the tree roots to help me. I had a great workout where my thighs were sore for days haha. I only wish I was able to get even closer to the waterfall to take photos. I'm clumsy so I also have to be careful. 37/2020

Yelp
I really don't know what I was expecting from Issaqueena Falls when we pulled up into their parking lot, but I got more than I expected that's for sure. Such a beautiful waterfall that had some great size to it! Here's the great joy of Issaqueena Falls...it's accessible to practically everyone, considering you can see the falls head on from a viewing area and not even a quarter of a mile away. There is a steep path that gets you right in front of the waterfall. On my first visit to Issaqueena my girlfriend and I didn't take the path down, but on our second visit, I did take the trail down, and it really was worth the experience, considering you get the best views of this pretty large waterfall at its base. I recommend doing it if you think you have the stamina for it, and you're okay with steep trails. Bottom line, be careful going down this path. We paid Issaqueena a visit immediately after it rained, and when we tried to tackle the Yellow trail, a 1.5 mile trail that connects to Issaqueena and is a one way trail (i.e. 3 miles round trip) near the parking lot, we were turned around after a half mile or so due to the mud puddles and us not having the right shoes. Again, yet another reason to pay this lovely place another visit! Very easy to find from the interstate, it's a lovely place to bring family with all the picnic tables, and if you're not really feeling the falls, there is the nearby Stumphouse Tunnel that you can explore. Rounding out this nature spot are bike trails and a camping area that really rounds out this place. FYI, no restrooms here, but there is a port-a-potty, and yep it smells about how you think it might smell, so plan accordingly. I really enjoyed myself here, and like others have said, you can find yourself spending an entire day stumbling across waterfalls along this trail, or just a short drive down the way. Issaqueena Falls is a gem, and if you're ever near Walhalla, you owe it to yourself to pop in and see the falls here.

Yelp
Beautiful waterfall and super short hike! Issaqueena Falls is supposedly named after a Native American girl who betrayed her tribe by warning nearby white settlers that her tribe was planning to attack their encampment. If you visit as many waterfalls as I do and hear the backstories to them, they almost always involve a Native American woman and a similar tale of tragedy. Inadvertently I've started to give many of these stories the side-eye when hearing them. Especially since so many seem to be identical in nature, like a young Indian girl falling in love but her father (usually the Chief) forbids it, so she throws herself off a waterfall or ledge in protest to show her love. I've heard that one several times for a number of waterfalls or cliffs, so please excuse me if I'm skeptical. Not to mention the girl sounds overly dramatic, borderline psychotic and perhaps even a STAGE 5 Clinger! But in any case, Issaqueena is a gorgeous waterfall viewable within a few hundred feet of the parking area, make it a very family, kid and elderly-friendly natural site. Just past the viewing platform you can take a very steep trail to the base of the falls, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND for the best pics, but not for small children. I'm not sure of its total height, but the main waterfall looks to be about 100' or more with cascades and a second drop adding about 40 additional feet. There are several picnic tables and grills near the parking area as well as a covered bridge over the main stream that feeds the waterfall. Also nearby is Stumphouse Tunnel, a pre-Civil War railroad project that was began in the mid 1850's and never completed. [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] Across the main road (Hwy 28) from Issaqueena is Yellow Branch Recreation Area which features yet another gorgeous waterfall via a 1.5 mile (one way) hiking trail. You could easily spend several hours in the area hiking to some fantastic waterfalls and afterwards having a meal in nearby Walhalla where a restaurant by the name of King Taco will surely satisfy. Enjoy! 2019/13

Yelp
By far one of my favorite hikes to date! For starters we went over to the Stumphouse Tunnel and enjoyed that quick experience before getting word from a couple that this falls was literally around the corner. We initially thought we could walk over which you can but it's so close to the entrance/exit of the park that it makes more sense to drive if you plan to do Stumphouse Tunnel first like we did. Once we got there and parked we walked to the overlook which was pretty cool but we love to get down and dirty on the floors of the falls so hiked down to the bottom. Now please keep in mind, THIS IS NOT DOG FRIENDLY!! We took our dog but it was a struggle of picking her up over roots and taking the hike slow. Also, it's important to mention that it's literally a short hike down. Less than a mile so it's easier if you have a dog that fits in a backpack or body holder. Once we were on the falls floor we took photos and just sat on the rocks and enjoyed the waterfall noise! It's the BEST day trip for anyone in Atlanta looking for a short distance get away!

Yelp
We went to the falls for the first time today and had a lovely experience! The actual walk to see the waterfall was super short and the creek was a hit for our dogs! We then went and explored the cave right beside it afterwards and that was also a hit! Lots of space to climb hills and get amazing views, tons of room to walk your fur babies around if you're considering taking them and very quiet!

Yelp
Beautiful location. Pretty accessible but watch where you walk (uneven ground and lots of tree roots). Nice stop on the way to Stumphouse Tunnel and great for photos.

Yelp
I hiked this trail with several others Yelpers on my first "Off the Grid" hiking Unofficial Yelp Event. You can hear the waterfall from the parking lot! That's how close it is! There is a fairly decent sized parking lot. You only have to take a few steps and there is a bird's eye view of the falls from a nice sized observation deck. If you would like different view of the falls (i.e. looking up/closer view), the you can hike down the side of the rocks to get closer. I would consider the hike down (& back up) "difficult." It is very steep and you have to use roots and the trees to hold onto. The ground was pretty slippery/mushy when we went, so we had to be careful of that too. I had to use my upper and lower body strength for this hike! Luckily, it is not a long hike down and really rewarding when you get to the bottom, because you can look up and see just how far the observation deck is. This is another great waterfall to get some beautiful pictures.

Yelp
Easy access and awesome views. Love to bring visitors or just come and sit.

Yelp
One of the best kept secrets in the area! I love it here. There are some historical markers throughout the Stumphouse Tunnel park section, that are neat to see. It's a bit of a hike down to the falls to look up, so make sure you can handle it before biting off more then you can chew! Falls are beautiful though. Not a great idea for elderly, small children.

Yelp
#fivestarfriday Well I've been here a number of times but never reviewed this amazing falls! So easy to get to plus it is a few minutes walk from the parking lot. There are covered picnic tables and places to sit. Go across a small foot bridge and down some steps the falls are on your left. They're beautiful! You can walk down a steep path to the bottom but only if you're strong enough. Of course the view from the bottom is great also. If you go during the fall, the fall colors of the leaves form a frame for the falls that is breathtaking. So how did it gets its name? Well here is the legend: Issaqueena, Allan, and their newborn baby moved back to Stumphouse Mountain to build their home. Angered with white settlers, the Cherokee Chief sent his warriors to capture Issaqueena. Issaqueena saw them coming and ran toward this waterfall to escape capture. Knowing that the Cherokee believed evil spirits lived in the waterfall, she pretended to leap to her death. She hid on the Issaqueena Falls - Informal Trail ledge behind the waterfall where she remained until it was safe to rejoin her family. Her dramatic escape was the basis for the legend of Issaqueena Falls. I would encourage anyone to visit these falls when you're in the upstate Now almost gave it four stars because there isnt a potty place. However that isnt a big problem because there is a large woods right there! Remember pack a picnic lunch, and prepare to relax and enjoy!
