"The designer digs Istoria means ‘story’ in Greek. And when Antonis and Kalia Eliopoulos drove down a narrow track to Perivolos beach to explore socialite Christina Tassou’s abandoned mansion and stables, they saw the chance to tell a very different one; not of Santorini’s hotel-clogged western caldera but of human obsession and the wild, black sands of the remote southeast. At the age of 15, Tassou caught the attentions of a Saudi sovereign, 35 years her senior, at the Greek royal court where her father was equerry. The king doggedly pursued her across Europe but to no avail. To trim a very long tale, she eventually escaped here and seems to have preferred horses: her home was hung with oil paintings of her five steeds. Captivated by her epic life, the maverick hoteliers behind Mystique and hilltop Vedema engaged Athens-based Interior Design Laboratorium to create a barefoot retreat, a homage less to Tassou than to organic storytelling by design. The departure from the whitewashed hotels and Jet Skis of Oia, and the physical isolation here, are reinforced by a stripped-down ethos which allows the original stone structure—and wilderness itself—to dominate. Its translucent waters are arch-framed from 12 suites, six of which are converted from the original stables, where nature’s palette is repainted in blush plaster, polished cement floors and clay-toned linens. On a taverna-less part of the coast, quantity is replaced with an impressive strike of quality at Mr E, the invention of Noma alum Alexandros Tsiotinis. Ingredients for his retellings of classics are sourced from Tassou’s former gardens. Her spirit remains in little reminders: water troughs and bridles are the hotel’s art. But the showpiece here is the 98-foot slate pool, with the caldera-rivaling drama of monolithic Mesa Vouno range rising behind. Ambience is great. First impression also great. Very nice hotel with 12 suites. Pool area is amazing and never got crowded. Spa area just by the pool. The Lava treatment itself is worth going back for. |A la carte breakfast was really good. Nicely presented and tasted just as good as it looked.|Sunbeds by the sea just steps away from the reception. No charge for hotel guests.|Most of the people were very friendly and welcoming however a couple seemed like they did not like their job and made the overalt impression not as good as it could have been.|Not happy about one of the girls in the bar saying she could make what we wanted, but couldn’t. Also the price for the champagne was 36€ for a glass of Möet, ridicilous. Even more expensive than Dubai and Mykonos.

In a word, Magical! From the moment we walked in, we were treated with kindness and great views. Situated on the black sand beach away from the crowds, it was a wonderful time away from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. Everyone, from the minute you walked in, was helpful and greeted you with the smile. They coordinated our sunset sailing our car rental and everything in between. We will be back! I highly recommend this hotel.

This is the more rustic side of Santorini, away from the white-washed cliffside dwellings, on the black sand beach. Istoria Hotel is the most luxurious option in the area, presenting as a luxury rustic experience, having been completely renovated from a former stable into a well-appointed & relaxed boutique hotel. Breakfast is tasty, and we particularly enjoyed the green smoothie most mornings, although remember that the relaxed restaurant seems to be on Island Time, so grabbing a quick bite before starting your day might be challenging. Minor issues with our well-appointed rooms were swiftly and successfully dealt with, by the responsive, cheerful & professional staff, who were consistently available throughout our stay. We were so happy to be staying at Istoria Hotel, while also being able to enjoy time at sister properties on the island for a different experience, before returning to our retreat at Istoria. It was the best of both worlds. There are countless dining options nearby, from casual to more elegant, should you want to explore the area. The hotel beach area and pool area both had wonderful service.

what an amazing hotel on the beautiful black sea|away from the crowds, but close enough to go anywhere and a cute walk into town|Everything here is special ,you feel like you’re entering a families beautiful cottage rooms . Food was wonderful. Service was top-notch. We had a little problem with our room one night. The hotel manager couldn’t be more accommodating. Highly recommend this hotel.

First Class luxurious hotel on Perivolos beach. A really special experience - everything was of the highest standard - the welcome, our upgraded room with jacuzzi, the complimentary wine. the swimming pool, the restaurant, the friendly helpful staff and the breakfast with so many options. It’s a special place, one that we’ll forever have fond memories to look back upon.

The receptionists were amazing and so accommodating with our numerous questions and needs. Despina and Rebecca were so nice and a pleasure to talk to during our stay at Istoria. The beds were extremely comfortable so we were able to get good sleep. Thank you for a memorable stay in Santorini!

An absolutely amazing experience, fantastic hotel, very well located with excellent facilities, the friendliest and kindest staff and management imaginable, phenomenal food, prepared by a chef willing to cater for individual needs. It felt like leaving family when our stay came to an end .

There are so many positive things to say about Hotel Istoria it’s hard to know where to begin! First the room, which was quiet and tranquil, with the largest and most comfy bed. We had an outside rooftop terrace and enjoyed sitting out each evening before bed. We loved the privacy of the pool, unlike other hotels along the seafront, you’re completely secluded from the road. And what’s not to love about walking across the road to the beach, with premium sun loungers and umbrellas, towel service etc. As other reviews have mentioned, the breakfast is amazing. Lots of options, relaxed and a lovely setting. But what really makes a stay at this hotel so special is the guest experience. The front of house staff can’t do enough for you, answering your questions day and night via WhatsApp, making recommendations and booking restaurants and trips. They helped us to have an amazing week in Santorini. We had a hire car and parked in the hotel car park and it was easy to get around the entire island from Perivolos. I also had a spa treatment whilst at the hotel and Irini was lovely, made me feel really comfortable and the Greek yoghurt facial literally left my skin glowing. We would love to return some day, it really is a special place!
