The 5 Best Hostels in San Diego (Updated 2025)

"I really like this hostel's focus on sustainable travel: it has a vegetable garden (guests get free veggies), recycling and composting programs, and backyard chickens. There are plenty of outdoor common spaces, including hammocks, and it's very friendly and social; it's clean, the water pressure in the showers is good, the beds are comfy, and it even offers female-only rooms, which makes it my favorite hostel in San Diego." - Matthew Kepnes

This is a cozy place to land for anyone outside of San Diego, especially when you’re on a budget. I came from North Carolina and was under the impression the hostel was only for international travelers, but American travelers are definitely welcome! People do not tend to stay for long here, nevertheless it is fun to connect with international people and hang out in the kitchen and common areas. I am usually the biggest introvert but staying here made me enjoy being around people. I wish I had more time to spend with the people I met here as well as staff, who were so accommodating and welcoming, and are working round the clock to keep the place stocked and clean. There are privacy curtains on the beds in the shared rooms and I never felt uncomfortable sharing with the other residents, just use your common sense and pick up after yourself. I had a lovely week long stay, and now I can say that I have a bunch of new friends from several different continents, which I wouldn’t have at a regular hotel. I would definitely book with ITH again.

Really enjoyed my time here. The hostel has a relaxed, easygoing atmosphere. Social enough to meet people, but not loud or chaotic. The space is clean, comfortable, and has everything you need without any unnecessary fuss. Antonella was super helpful and kind, always around if you had a question or needed anything, but also gave everyone space to do their thing. She clearly cares about the place and it shows. Overall, it was a smooth, no stress stay - one of those hostels where you feel at ease right away. Would definitely come back if I’m in the area again.

My daughter found this incredible hostel for our Mother/daughter time in San Diego. We are global travelers, mostly staying in hostels in Australia, America, South America, Australia and New Zealand.||We were treated like royalty even though we were the oldest as residents. My daughter is 52. I am 78. Because of a knee injury, I was using a wheel chair. Staff changed our room to the least steps and closest to the bathroom, which I highly appreciated.|| The kitchen and bathroom areas were always clean, clean rugs. Endless activities (Bar B Q, free transport to farmers' markets, the beach) were constantly offered but my daughter and I had our trip pre-planned. ||Staff checked with us daily to make sure our needs were being met. ||The Little Italy area is also a thriving area of San Diego. Incredible restaurants and farmers' markets in walking distance.

My mom and I came down to San Diego for a mother daughter trip recently. She had a knee injury and required a wheelchair unfortunately, for our trip. ||We were originally supposed to be in a second floor room with air con which would have been hard for her to access. The manager Santi and another employee Steve took time moving the aircon unit to a downstairs room where she Wouid have easier access.||Both arriving and leaving helpful employees helped us with our bags up and down the front stairs.||We stayed in the annex with private rooms and loved the overall vibe of guests and employees. The kitchen and living room were cozy.||The bathroom and kitchen were cleaned every day and kept spotless.||Anytime we had questions or needs the staff were amazingly helpful. ||There’s also a WhatsApp group for the whole hostel which announces weekly BBQs, outings, and billiards matches.||Lastly- the location was super close to downtown, tons of restaurants, the train station, restaurants in Little Italy, and Balboa Park (so many fun events there!). It’s a block for the legendary Saturday Litfle Italy farmers market.||Great hostel for singles, couples, and family like us. ||Big shout out to the staff including manager Santi and all the hardworking staff we met: Steve, Priscilla, Adrianna, Ceyla, Kimberly, and Vito. 👏

Such a great experience. The rooms were clean and had a decent amount of storage. Staff was amazing, and the location was great- 5 minute walk from great restaurants in Little Italy and a 15/20 minute drive to beaches. Definitely would stay again

This is the only hostel I will stay on in San Diego because not only are the hotels wooden bunk beds less noisy then the metal ones that most hostels provide but they have a curtain for privacy. No more using a sheet like did for years traveling around the world. Plus most importantly there are plugs for your phone and other electronics IN YOUR BUNK BED. That is truly rare! You can store your stuff below your bunk in a slide out drawer that you can lock. It’s so convenient! It’s also a very convenient location with beautiful interior with washers/dryers for decent price. Multiple bathrooms which is even more rare. No more waiting for one bathroom. They have many stalls. An outside smoking area is provided as well. Very close to everything and most importantly you truly feel safe in this hostel. As a girl, that’s ideal.

The hostel is in a good location, at the heart of San Diego. That’s pretty much all the positive that i can think of though. Maybe this is a decent place to be if you are looking to interact with other travellers. The rooms were bad, with thin walls, could hear even whispers from the neighbours! And the apartment shakes every time someone walks, it seemed pretty old. Looks cute from the outside however. I am sure i could have found a far better place with the money i paid, totally wasn’t worth it!

i have to warn the fellow traveler, if you respect your health, might take another look around for a safer place to stay. there is a black mold infestation in this hostel. other than that … it’s not bad! the room was pretty much exactly what i needed, save for the spores. i would say, just avoid the single bathrooms — the multi stall bathroom is *less* moldy, but the musty smell does not betray, it’s in there too, and logic would have it, also in the bedrooms that share the walls.
