I was at the ITH San Diego (single bunk female dorm) as part of a solo trip along the West Coast and this was my first stop. Overall, I would really recommend this hostel for the amazing guests and hosts, chill vibes and access to fun and affordable activities nearby.
Location:
- The location could have not been better. Right in Little Italy there are many restaurants and cafes nearby. There are affordable local groceries nearby as well as a Sunday morning Farmer's Market if you want to cook your own food.
Transportation:
- There is a bus from the airport that takes you really close to the Hostel. Apart from that, there are 2 Amtrak stations are very close by. The blue and green trolley station is a 6 minute walk and during the weekdays the trolleys are very frequent
Activities:
- Balboa Park is walking distance with unique museums. Old Town is a lovely historic part of town where you can spend a couple of hours and just a few stops away on the trolley. Additionally due to good public transportation connectivity I was able to visit Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla Coves, Torrey Pines State Park (a little hard to get to but definitely possible and totally worth it!), UC San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. Although Little Italy is fun to walk around in the evenings, the rest of the nearby downtown areas weren't the most pleasant to walk around.
Hostel:
The kitchen is really big and spacious for cooking and chatting with others. Unfortunately, there is only one bathroom on the top floor and the bottom floor has co-ed bathrooms. The co-ed bathrooms threw me off at first but I got used to it after a bit. Also, the bunks only have usb chargers instead of usb-c or power points.
People:
- Kimberly and Santi were really amazing hosts. They made me feel welcome and they were there to help with any questions or concerns. The hostel organizes socializing events which makes it really easy to connect with others. Many guests when I visited were there for longer stays so I had to go a little out of my way to connect. Once I did however, I found I had a few friendly faces to come back to after a long day of adventuring. Everyone is chill and respectful of quiet hours and community spaces.
