Ithurria

"You couldn’t find a more authentic Basque picture postcard than this eatery on Ainhoa’s Place du Fronton, opposite the village’s pelota wall! The attractive, traditional family establishment has retained its terracotta tiled flooring, wooden rafters, gleaming copper pots and vintage tableware. Assisted by his pastry-chef brother Louis, chef Martin Isabal has definitively taken over the reins from Uncle Xavier. Martin’s enticing menu is sourced exclusively from local producers and their own kitchen garden. The terroir takes centre stage in delicious recipes: Landes asparagus, peppery mousseline sauce and a crispy egg yolk; Koskera-style line-caught hake; roasted rack of suckling lamb with confit shoulder." - Michelin Inspector

Hôtel Ithurria (Ainhoa, Nouvelle Aquitaine) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Set on the French side of the Basque country — and, stylistically, on the traditional side, as opposed to Frank Gehry’s Bilbao — Hotel Ithurria is a classic small farmhouse hotel, family-owned since the Sixties, and still relevant today because the virtues of small-scale, personal hospitality never really go out of style." - Tablet Hotels

The staff was very polite and professional. We felt well taken care of and honestly dressed up a little for breakfast because it was so nice and the buffet was impressive. We also dined there for dinner and enjoyed their prix fixe menu complete with local vegetables and regional wine. Apparently, they allow dogs inside the restaurant, which I find a little annoying personally, but I’m sure that dog owners love it. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who appreciates comfort, delicious food and great service!!

Wonderful hotel surrounded by a beautiful garden. The rooms are spacious and nicely designed. The gourmet restaurant and bistro serve tasty local dishes. They have their own vegetable garden and chicken coop. There were a variety of fresh fruits for breakfast. The outdoor swimming pool area is pristine and very nicely designed. There is also an indoor gym. Last but not least, the service is outstanding, the staff is smiling and eager to be of help.

Google
2 star rating to the restaurant, as the hotel was very pleasant. Our recent visit to Ithurria restaurant was quite a disappointment. Despite its Michelin star, the food was underwhelming in both taste and presentation. To make matters worse, both my husband and I experienced terrible stomach aches after our meal, leading to a sleepless night. The overall experience was far from what we anticipated. Dessert was very nice and helped to finish the dinner on a higher note, but did not help to save the whole thing.

This is an exceptional hotel very well situated to explore this beautiful region. Everything about this hotel exudes class. The rooms are very clean and well equipped. The ambiance is laid back and discrete. The staff are attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. The pool is beautiful and there is a very well equipped little gym. Every little detail has been thought out and is very well executed. The food is amazing! Really cannot recommend highly enough.

We went into this lovely place with our group while on an excursion thru the basque countryside. This hotel / restaurant was in the beautiful village of Ainhoa. The drive here was great and the scenery spectacular. The greeting by the staff was warm and inviting and service throughout the meal was very attentive. The multi-course meal was very good as were the wine selections. The restaurant has received a Michelin star, and a special. Note is a letter of acknowledgment from Dwight D. Eisenhower (later President of the United States) as the Supreme Allied Commander of the crucial and significant role the owner of the restaurant had played during WWII assisting the war effort.

We enjoyed our stay very much. They had a good set up for a family of four. The family room had two separate bedrooms and a great patio with a view of the hills and the sheep. The pool and grounds were beautiful. They have a small, outdated gym where i literally took the cobwebs off my stationary bike -- but you would not go here for the exercise. Restaurant is really great too.

Beautifully refined dining! The meal was delicious from start to end. And the staff was top notch. I thought that the maitre d' was especially brilliant. He obviously loves his chosen profession and he does it with such warmth and finesse...Bravo!

Yelp
This was without a doubt, the best tasting meal of my entire life. (mind you we toured many of the legends in Donostia and visited Azurmendi) My husband and I stumbled on this Michelin Starred restaurant while staying in San Sebastián/Donostia. It is about an hour drive, and a beautiful journey. We called on a weekday and were able to get reservations for an early dinner that evening. We were not prepared for a dinner of this sort and were in hiking gear. Nevertheless the staff graciously welcomed us. Our dinner was around 5pm and being so early we were the only diners for the first hour. The execution of the meal was impeccable. I have never had fish prepared so beautifully. The service was the highest level, with 4-5 staff dedicated to our table. The flavors were, thoughtful, inventive and beautiful. The town is tiny, a single street, with cute little shops. We enjoyed walking around and stopped at the single bar on the street. Comparatively places like Azurmendi are admittedly more inventive, but Ithurria is a fraction of the price tag and a similar level of magical. My husband and I plan to travel back to France solely to visit Ithurria again. This family owned business is a must on your bucket list.
