Never knew this place existed! But I do believe it is fairly new. The reservation process is interesting because you actually place your order online, whether it is afternoon tea or high tea. There are currently four options for high tea -- a seasonal tea called Spring High Tea, a Southern Brunch High Tea, an Abundance High Tea and a Spa High Tea -- the last one being a vegan friendly, healthier option. I saw that the Spring High Tea menu was French-inspired as part of their global traveler series, so my friend and I opted for that one. The menu consisted of:
* Goat cheese tart with chicken paillard, roasted peas, tarragon
* Petite quiche with rosemary ham, tomato jam, brie, arugula
* Salade niçoise with shrimp, asparagus, olives, baby potatoes
* Lavender lemon poppy scones
* Pistachio french macarons
* Blackberry frangipane tartlet
You can choose between regular, vegetarian or gluten-free for each menu and then you choose your tea. I'm not certain, but if you are dining with someone else, I think you'd have to choose the same menu, otherwise they'd count as separate reservations. Not sure how it would work with parties of 2 or more that opt for different menus.
Because you are making your selections online as part of the reservation process, you also pre-pay during this time. I also found this interesting because you can request your desired date, but the owner must contact you to confirm that date. They do list dates that are fully booked on the website, I assume to prevent you from selecting that date during the booking process. So basically, you are paying for a reservation that is not 100% confirmed yet. I strongly suggest paying attention to their list of booked dates to avoid any delays in the reservation process. There is also a place on the website to pre-pay your tip, or you can Venmo them.
In my case, I impatiently emailed the owner to confirm the dates myself, as a few days had passed and I hadn't heard from them yet (made the booking on a Friday and reached out to them by the following Wednesday, and they did respond that day).
Now onto the food. I really enjoyed the menu, for the most part. I got the Southern Peach tea to pair with it, which is probably not the most common pairing, but I really enjoy fruity black teas.
The goat cheese tart was very tasty, reminded me a flatbread or pizza so it doesn't look to be a typical tart.
The "petite quiche" was not petite at all! It was a very generous slice and very delicious, I liked this item a lot.
The salade niçoise was a surprise for me. I've seen it on menus at other French places and the description never appealed to me. Ivy Tea House's version came with shrimp, which was well-seasoned on its own. The salade was served in a cute little dish that was a bit hard to eat out of, so I ended taking forkfuls and dipping it into the provided personal container of salad dressing, and cutting certain items, like the shrimp or olives, on my plate as necessary.
The lavender-lemon-poppy scones were my least favorite item, and I think the only item we were allowed to request more of. In my opinion, the scones were a bit dry and strongly tasting of lavender. With the blackberry preserves and the cream, they were tasty, but paled in comparison to the rest of the selections.
I really enjoyed the blackberry frangipane tartlet -- the name tartlet here is misleading as it is a dense cake, and served cold (not sure if this was purposeful). If I saw this item at a bakery, I would purchase it for sure as I enjoyed the texture and taste.
Lastly, the pistachio macarons. The filling was amazing, with little bits of pistachio. The macaron shells were a bit too brittle/airy but hey, I ate them all the same.
They have an afternoon tea menu that also sounds delicious and is cheaper at $29 (starting, depending on what items you opt for) and a children's tea for $29. The high tea options are $38.
They also feature a la carte menu items (you can order takeout or walk-in on Fridays 1-5 pm. Their Friday hours, by reservation, are 12 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm and Saturday hours, by reservation, are 12 pm and 2 pm). Because we had a 12 pm reservation on Saturday, our visit was limited to one and a half hours to allow for the next parties to be set up.
I could see this being a cute spot to host a baby shower or bridal shower. They even have an outdoor tent set up for big parties.
Seeing as they change up the menus, I would most definitely return! It is a charming little spot to catch up with a good friend.
