SF Supervisors Consider New Fee on Disposable Takeout Containers - Eater SF

"A new little izakaya is up and running in the Richmond, serving dishes like wagyu tataki and sashimi beef tongue at 2221 Clement Street (between 23rd and 24th Avenues). Lots of raw fish is on the menu, too." - Caleb Pershan

Hanabi (meaning firework in Japanese) roll was beautiful and delicious. But try agedashi tai (snapper) too. A hidden gem in SF. Oh, during happy hours their Dassai 45 (daiginjo sake) is a steal. Enjoy the smooth taste and elegant aroma.

This place is Amazing very nice ambiance best sushi or even hot dishes came out just perfect. Wow was my impression from the start to the end definitely recommend

This is one of the best Izakaya restaurants in the Bay Area and the price is reasonable. It offers many items not typically found in many other Izakaya places. A friend and I ordered - potato croquette - grilled miso black cod - takoyaki (deep fried octopus dough balls) - agedashi tofu - tori no karaage (fried chicken) - takowasa (raw octopus mixed with wasabi sauce) All were excellent. Our server claimed the restaurant has the best karaage in San Francisco. He might be right. It got lighter and more delicate coating than any karaage I had before.

Google
Authentic izakaya spot, every dish we had was delicate and high quality. The server was super attentive and courteous. Definitely coming back! Karaage: juicy fried chicken, perfectly soft skin Agedashi mochi Negitoro Taru Taru: fatty tuna served in unique bamboo dish Motsu nabe: beef intestine hot pot soup Agedashi tai: fried red snapper

Another great dinner and great evening at this my go to neighborhood restaurant. Always a big fan of Chef Hiro’s authentic and creative Japanese cooking. Never disappointed on any dishes I ordered. Sashimis are always fresh and flavorful. Definitely A gem in the neighborhood!

Google
This is a place my Japanese (and my friends who wish they were) friends have asked me not to review as they want to keep it to themselves. Maybe it's so incredibly good at everything it does because it's the closest full Japanese restaurant on the mainland US to Japan. But the nigiri is better than most $$$$ sushi places in the city and their kitchen rocks the good food. The loss of a star in atmosphere is due to it sometimes being too loud because too many people are having a good time.

Small Izakaya packed with unique food items like Akedashi Mochi (rather than tofu) or Beef Intestine udon! We enjoyed the vibe of small, hidden intimated shop. The staff is nice and the food tastes amazing. Some dishes are small portion but some are huge like grilled octopus. It is quite an adventure to explore all the food you don't find in a typical American Japanese restaurants so have fun!

Seven of us had dinner at 6pm on a Monday, and really enjoyed the experience. On a wet, chilly night with the cozy, intimate atmosphere and cheerful service inside, plus some hot sake, it was quite hygge. We were celebrating a birthday and so ordered a lot of food, but the standouts were: Agedashi mochi (I like mochi anything) Karaage (extra large, delicious pieces) Negi toro taru taru (interactive yumminess) Omakase nigiri (so fresh) All the rolls we ordered were beautiful and tasty. We also enjoyed the takoyaki, shishito peppers (got a spicy one!), edamame, and croquettes. The skewers had good flavor but were a little tough. The miso was amazingly flavorful but had a little too much cabbage and onion for me. It’s a great spot for dinner with a few good friends. For our group of 7, we made two separate Yelp reservations (the max is a table for 4), then called the restaurant in advance to ask that they put us together.

Yelp
This place is truly a hidden gem. Came here for a romantic dinner and it did not disappoint with its intimate vibes, mouth watering sushi rolls, delicious nigiri, savory udon, great drink selection, and exceptional service. First bite impressions: - Agedashi Mochi: 4.5/5 - mochi was gooey and slightly crunchy on the outside. The sauce was sweet and a perfect pairing with the mochi. Highly recommend for a mochi lover. - Kitsune Udon: 4.5/5 - savory, light, with bouncy noodles. My first bite brought me back to my travels in Japan. - Rich Daddy Roll: 5/5 - certified flavor bomb! The hint of truffle flavor makes this roll so satisfyingly delicious. This roll is the reason I will continue to comeback. - Maybe Baby Roll: 4/5 - this roll was good... but I'm not a huge cucumber lover and felt that it over powered the flavor of the roll. -Hanabi Roll: 4.5/5 - presentation is stunning and it tasted just as good as it looked with flavors of fresh fish and exploding salty ikura. - Aburi Toro Nigiri: 5/5 - Must get! Melts in your mouth with fatty tuna flavor of your dreams. Had a hint of smoky flavor from being lightly seared and the sauce that it comes with compliments the tuna so well. - Matcha Cheesecake: 4/5 - Cream cheesy with a slight matcha punch. Great value since it comes with two pieces!

Yelp
Delicious! My friends and I were looking for a last minute place in the Richmond for 6 people and stumbled upon Izakaya Mayumi. The service was great and there wasn't any wait at all. Parking was also easy on a Saturday night. We ordered a bunch of rolls and appetizers and the favorite of the night was the rich daddy roll on the daily specials menu!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here with my girlfriend after our original dinner plans were cancelled on a Saturday night. We arrived around 6 and were seated quickly after which there seemed to be a wait time to get in (highly recommend making a reservation) To simply put we were mindblown by the food quality and ambience. We had a very sweet dinner and by sitting near the counter seat area we had a very romantic/cozy experience as well. The shishito peppers were some of the best I got. All the dishes were ordered were fantastic. I will definitely be back here again

Yelp
The ambience of this restaurant is so soothing and quaint; with only a handful of tables and a small bar area, you will definitely have an intimate dinner here. Given the small space, for larger parties it's safe to make a reservation. We ordered a handful of items from the menu, including the sashimi sampler, shishito peppers, udon, and one of their specialty rolls. All the food was prepped and presented wonderfully. It was satisfying without feeling incredibly heavy. Will definitely come back here for more sushi!

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a Thursday night. Was impressed by the ambiance which was traditional and cozy. Our server was very attentive and our food came out quickly. Karaage - came out piping hot and was juicy. The chicken seemed to be pre marinated which made it taste extra flavorful. The skin is on the more thin side and didn't exactly stay on, but was still crunchy. Negi toro - my husband really liked this. The tuna was fatty and the mix with the scallion was good. 49er roll - fresh salmon and was very good Hamachi and salmon nigiri - fatty pieces and the rice was a good temperature and seasoned well. Hotate kushi (scallop skewers) - we were a bit disappointed in this. The scallops were overcooked and tasted more like dried scallops. We were expecting one large scallop, not 4 smaller ones. Matcha cheesecake - not too sweet and nice and thick (American style) Overall, we had a great experience and enjoyed the quality of the service and food! Prices are pretty standard for the area.

Yelp
This is a great Izakaya and has incredible sushi. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely make reservations as this is quite a small restaurant!

Yelp
Delicious, fresh, and absolutely welcoming. Customer service was great. We ordered the 25 piece sashimi platter and it did not disappoint! Service was quick. Thank you!

Yelp
A friend of mine in the neighborhood took us here for some authentic Japanese izakaya bites a few months ago and we can't stop returning. You can tell the restaurant owners truly care about the quality of food and have spent a surplus of time curating an exquisite menu full of Japanese delights. We never skip on the agedashi mochi, chicken skin skewers, nabe pots and chu hi. Not to mention the incredible service and a cozy ambience! This place is truly a neighborhood gem

Yelp
Amazing fish quality, especially considering the price! Ordered the spicy tuna, rainbow, and Honolulu rolls with a side of chicken karaage and all were fantastic. The fish was buttery and not fishy at all, while the rolls themselves were actually pretty large. I'm not exaggerating when I say the karaage is actually one of the best I've had as well, it's very well seasoned and juicy without any oiliness. What surprised me the most was how muted the color of the rainbow roll fish was, and a reminder of how this place uses really fresh fish vs other spots whose fish are pumped up with dyes (see pic). I think I found my new go-to izakaya!

Yelp
Our first time here, we enjoyed the authentic Japanese food and friendly service at this cozy spot. All the sushi rolls we tried were fresh, the udon hit the spot, and the mochi Dashi was interesting (but we'll stick with agedashi next time). Our favorite roll was the wagyu, so good! They have a big menu with izakaya, sushi rolls, and soup noodle dishes. They didn't seem super busy when we visited, and could use your business, come support this Japanese owned restaurant. Pro tip- the happy hour from 5-6 is a great deal!

Yelp
Super cute, quaint, and intimate hidden gem in Richmond offering a wide range of high quality Japanese appetizers, dishes, and sushi -- they have something for everyone! I ordered the Rich Daddy roll, which has an interesting name, but the tuna was extremely fresh, and the truffle oil added a really lovely fragrance. I also sampled my boyfriend's sukiyaki udon, and the broth's umami flavor was so soothing and hearty, and it came with a lot of toppings which definitely made it worth. We finished with matcha cheesecake for dessert which had the perfect balance between the sweetness and the earthiness of the matcha. I definitely want to come back to try more of their fresh fish offerings when I'm prepared to splurge a little more! Overall I fell in love with the vibe -- it was very calm and cozy inside so perfect for enjoying a nice dinner with a date or small group. The service was also very professional and comfortable which really upped the experience. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
This is a small little sushi spot that really delivers! We ordered the Agedashi mochi to start - the flavor was really good, but I think I'd stick to tofu over mochi. We also got the miso soup, which was really good and filled with vegetables and tofu. Then we had the Hot Mama, Dragon, and Spicy Hamachi rolls. The Dragon was perfect, the Hot Mama had a great kick and a nice flavor, and the Spicy Hamachi was nothing special, but still good. The service was also great and the prices are reasonable given the quality of the food. Definitely a great option if you're wanting good sushi!

Yelp
Cute little sushi place in the Richmond. It's more sushi than truly an Itzakaya because non sushi menu was limited. Technically it still fulfills the eat-stay-drink but I usually think of more skewers/croquettes. Sushi was yummy. Tempura was crispy and not greasy. Had the Fat Daddy roll which I agree was not overpowering with truffle. Waygu roll was great for picky son. Oysters had a fresh toast and yummy sauce. Only one waitress, but food was prompt

Yelp
My partner recently had gotten sick, which gave me the opportunity to have some sushi (because he doesn't eat sushi, so because he and I were eating separately this night, I went for my favorite). Usually, I eat at a different restaurant but on this particular Monday night they happened to be closed, so I searched around the immediate area for an alternative and found Izakaya Mayumi! I ordered two rolls and a miso soup to go, and was really pleasantly surprised at how delicious it all was! It was slightly expensive, but no more than I was anticipating, as sushi tends to be pricier than most cuisine. I drove a few blocks and found the storefront, parked just outside on clement, and went in to find the most charming little hole in the wall with table seating and a bar top! The server working that night quickly came out from the back and rang me up, he offered chopstick and soy sauce, both which I accepted. I will absolutely be returning to this place! The quality of the food was simply superior to the restaurant I usually go to (which is only about 3 blocks away). Thanks for a great first meal! I'll be back!

Yelp
I ordered two rolls and was shocked when the food was delivered (through Doordash) exactly 12 minutes after I ordered!! Obviously the food was PRE-MADE! And one of my rolls was a tempura roll! Anyone can imagine how AWFUL a pre-made tempura can be. The food was not fresh! Extremely disappointing.
google avatar

Yelp
the hot dishes were phenomenal - kaarage, takoyaki and miso soup. but the nigiri was not good. might be a place you go for hot dishes

Yelp
Small-scale spot with really cozy vibes. The service was great and it wasn't busy on a Monday night. Big Daddy roll: 9/10 delicious flavor and the truffle wasn't too overwhelming. The fish quality was great! 49er roll: 10/10 My favorite roll, such a simple roll but they did it right. Perfect balance of everything and I would order this again & again. Sweet Potato roll: 7.5/10 there wasn't much flavor and the tempura wasn't as crispy as i'd like. Small but simple Takoyaki: 8.5/10 yum! I wish there was bigger octopus pieces but it came out hot and flavor was good he quality of the fish was up there and it was a great experience, would definitely return!

Yelp
Everything was tasty, and the fancier items were on point. The menu is surprisingly heavy on the rolls - but on the plus sides - they're tasty and filling. Extensive list of sakes and a few beers make IM a drink spot as much as a food spot. * my phone camera decided to fail so no photos from this one :(

Yelp
From the outside, this izakaya is so inconspicuous that I didn't realize I had arrived but the inside is so cute. I came with a friend and the weekday night we came it was on the more quiet side so I would say it's better for dates or small friend gatherings. We ordered 3 items and they were all so good. We got to the takowasa, which was very fresh, and the maybe baby and rich daddy rolls. Both rolls were super thick and had very generous cuts of fish. I usually can eat more than a roll but I was so full after eating a few pieces. The fish was all high quality and the flavors were all well balanced. Service was also great and prices were so reasonable considering the quality, I will definitely be back to try more items

Yelp
Came here on Sunday at 6pm. It was pretty empty but started to get busy around 7pm. Pretty small place but gave off traditional Japanese vibes. We ordered a bottle of the purple label sake that the waitress recommended. She was really nice and gave samples of a lot of the different sakes they have. Overall the food was good but on the pricey side. The fish was super fresh and the dishes were flavorful. The Honolulu roll was $20. The aji nigiri was $12 I believe. The uni on a spoon was $11 each. I wish they gave more uni. The negi toro was really fun to make our own rolls. I love mountain yam so it was a great condiment.

Yelp
Cozy date night spot in the outer richmond district Ambiance: cozy and a bit small Price: $$ Service: Good Parking: hard on the weekends, recommend ubering Food (4/5) They serve the typical sushi rolls, nigiris, and sashimi, all were delish! They also have fried food and skewers, the pork belly was one of my favorites. I recommend getting their specials and nabe! Can't go wrong with the food here!

Yelp
Love this little place in the neighborhood that we stumbled on. The food, atmosphere and service were all exceptional.

Yelp
I've lived by here for almost 3 years and I'm bummed I just tried this place this year. We first came here to celebrate my brother's birthday. We were looking for something low-key but yummy. This place did not disappoint. The place is very clean and cozy. Perfect lighting. No crazy loud music - can have great conversations without having to scream at one another. We ordered some fancy $100+ sake bottle to celebrate. It was so so so good. The server (I forgot his name but he's a saint) came by and refilled out sake glasses every time they were empty. They also let us taste test 3 other sake which were all delicious. The food was impeccable. Super fresh fish. The dishes are well thought out. It just feels like you're at home being taken care of. If you love yummy Japanese food, get in here. It's so worth it.

Yelp
Izayaka Mayumi? Hands down, amazing. Incredible. Delectable. Our server Carl? A legend. Attentive, hilarious, and the perfect guide to an unforgettable night. Seriously, he made the whole evening a blast. The food? Next-level delicious--don't miss the sashimi and miso soup, they're chef's kiss. Plus, the place is decorated with that perfect cozy vibe that just makes you feel at home. Pro tip: Go on a Wednesday, because that's when Carl (aka the magical dinner wizard) is there, and trust me, you'll be talking about this meal forever.

Yelp
Almost all reviews talk about how amazing the service is and I am so glad I got to experience this myself :) Came here for a belated Father's Day dinner and we were seated right away since we made reservations. It's a small restaurant so make sure you make a resy prior! There was only 1 waitress working and she pretty much is a superwoman. She busses the table, takes the orders, brings the dishes out, and checks in on every table herself. We ordered pretty much all the nigiris, uni shots, Takowasa, negitoro chu chu, agadashi tofu, etc. Every single piece of sushi was AMAZING. 10/10! Will definitely recommend everyone to come :)

Yelp
I think we're in love with this tiny spot! Omakase. Just get it. The flavors are fantastic. We also got the squid... just look at the pix. The char was amazing and perfect. Also highly suggest getting the house sale with it all.. cuz WHY NOT. We made rezzies through yelp because we weren't sure about the wait, but it was perfect - not empty, but there were 2 other parties besides us and we all got comfortably. We went on a weekday holiday, but you will definitely need to make a rezzie. It's a small space!

Anthony G.

Yelp
Food was outstanding. I brought a friend from Norway who was in search of Sea Urchin (Uni), he was very pleased. The sushi rolls were outstanding as well. I also got a bowl of beef udon and it was pleasing as well. The service was excellent. For being a small place, our party of 4 was sat quickly. Will return soon!

Yelp
From being seated to finishing our meal, the servers were attentive. Even though the place was packed, food came out at a good pace. Everything we ordered was delicious! We decided to order the agedashi mochi since we have never seen it offered anywhere else before and no regrets! The negitoro Taru taru is a must get. Paired with some sake, this made a great dinner to catch up with my girl friend.
google avatar

Yelp
Overall good experience, a great variety of food from sashimi/nigiri to grilled/fried food to hotpot, I appreciate the wide selection. Things I ordered are all on the slightly too salty side (except for grilled chicken skin which I think is perfect). Even the matcha cheesecake tastes salty (and heavy), which is a bit disappointing at the end as I was looking for something sweet and light (were it not for the cheesecake I would have rated this place 4.5 star and would round it up to 5 star).

one of my favorite places in the city to get an authentic japanese dinner! the service is super friendly and knowledgeable. they have a limited HH from 5pm-6pm everyday but i always just order from the main menu. beautiful and clean interior! izakaya mayumi is one of my sf staples ごちそうさまでした!

Yelp
The food was really good and definitely worth the price! My friends and I all had no complaints. Our favorite was the Negi Toro Taru Taru because it was fun to wrap our own negi toro and the fish flavor was yummy! The roll and nabe were also very flavorful! For the nabe, we ordered the spicy miso broth and we loved the chicken balls. It was a good mix of protein and vegetables. I loved that it just soaked up the soup for flavor. The service was amazing!!! I loved our waitress. She constantly came back to refill our waters and checked up on us. She also recommended us the negi toro taru taru because we wanted negi toro rolls originally. She also recommended us the spicy broth over the regular miso base. It is a little spicy if you usually don't eat spicy but a good amount for spice lovers. I also loved the decorations and vibe of the restaurant. It really represented Japanese culture. It was definitely a good pick to eat. This place is great to eat with family, friends, and on dates!

Yelp
The best sushi in the neighborhood, excellent quality food. This is the kind of place you want to return to again and again

Yelp
It was raining so hard the last couple of days after I arrived in SF. I was like why did I even come around this time, BUT having dinner at Izakaya Mayumi really turned my night around. In LA, where I'm from, there aren't many legit izakaya places. I was stoked when my friend took me to this restaurant. To start, my friend picked out a bottle of Makiri sake (you know, to get a little buzz going). Makiri translates to "demon cutter", which is pretty cool huh? If you like your sake with a dry aftertaste, this is it! It has a clean and deep flavor. We ordered a couple of dishes that were all 10/10 for me: Simmered Tai Aradaki head - wow, it was simmered in soy sauce (and mirin I think). It came out hot and the meat was so tender. You could just taste the fish was good quality. This is a must-get because I've never really had this dish at other izakaya restaurants before. Hokkaido uni with ikura - wow (again), the uni was FRESH and SWEET. It came with nori so you can wrap it with ikura in a tiny burrito. Eat it with one bite so it's extra satisfying. Also, it's super fresh. And the color is beautiful. Fried chicken skin - I don't usually like to eat any skin, but these taste like chips! They are so good and they'll keep you wanting more. They're nice and crispy with the perfect amount of oil. Yellowtail sushi - This dish is more basic BUT you can taste the freshness of yellowtail. Some places that serve yellowtail sushi have a fishy taste but this one tastes delicious. We didn't order too many dishes but so far this is my favorite izakaya and I will come back to visit again! The ambiance feels cozy, clean, and intimate, which I like.We

Yelp
This is my favorite place ever. I come here about once a month. The chicken skins in ponzu are THE BEST! The ponzu is so savory and balanced with salty crunchy from the chicken skin. If you don't get that here you are truly depriving yourself of happiness. Nabe: The one I always get is the spicy miso meatball nabe. Its pretty spicy and my tolerance is pretty high. Along with the chicken meatballs are pieces of napa cabbage, onion and tofu. Its the perfect bowl of soup for a cold winters day. Park Ranger: this is an all vegetable roll. It sounds crazy, but I do not eat fish. Most veggies rolls you'll find are so boring and carelessly put together. However, this one comes with a delicious sauce, several different veggies and its not mostly rice! Its a nice veggie dish to refresh the palette after all the other foods you decide to eat. Agá dashi tofu: they put a lot into their broths and sauces here. The tofu is simple as it is fried lightly but the dashi broth is what sends it to higher heights. The broth is slightly jelly-like and is balanced between chickeny, seaweedy, sweet, and salty. They top it with lost if grated ginger and green onions. Karaage: they give HUGE pieces here! They simply give you a lemon to top it and it adds acidity to balance the fried fattiness. Service: Its a small place so everyone is very attentive. There is one waitress that knows my order by heart at this point and I love her. She is so sweet and wonderful. Ambiance: quiet, small neighborhood place.

Yelp
Have been searching for a place to call my favorite sushi place for a while and I'm happy to say I've found it. The sashimi is on point every time, and the matcha cheesecake for dessert is one of my favorites. Love how small and intimate this place is, so you can have conversations without it being too loud. And the staff always takes good care of us. I encourage everyone to go try!

Yelp
Not your traditional Izakaya restaurant - it's more of a local Japanese Tapas eatery. They have a massive menu, so be prepared to do some reading. Not sure how many are working in the kitchen, but the food flow is fast. Because of the extensive menu, I was concerned that quality would be an afterthought, but everything was delicious and well-prepared. My first time here, so I kept PPQ and Hakka (close by favorites) in my back pocket just in case this didn't work out, but fortunately, all was fine for our party of 5. Research and studying the menu beforehand would be my suggestion before coming here. BB

Yelp
We came on a Sunday night right when it opened and sat at the bar. Instead of a sushi chef, the bar was lined with sake bottles. It would be nice to see a chef make our sushi but fortunately the 10 piece nigiri we ordered did not disappoint! It was fresh and rice to fish proportion was on point! The highlight of our meal had to be the chicken skin with ponzu sauce. It was delicious and so addicting. Highly recommend that you order this when you come here. Overall a solid Japanese restaurant with great ambiance, service and food!

Yelp
Everything I had here was so yummy! The sushi was super fresh and smooth, and the portions were perfect for me. The skewers were so juicy and grilled nicely, highly recommend the pork skewer! The cuts of sashimi were delicious, and I loved that they provided cucumber, green onion, and ginger toppings to add variety to your bite. The rolls were also larger than I was expecting for places like this -- I didn't know how much I needed truffle oil in my rolls until I had the Rich Daddy. Such an interesting flavor but makes a lot of sense! Overall, I really enjoyed this place. I honestly wasn't expecting much, something more of like a 'hole in the wall', but the quality and service was so nice. (First Love came up on their playlist/radio and that pretty much was the cherry on top, ha!) A great option for a date night or even just to treat yourself if you're looking for something in the area.

Yelp
I've come here several times and they never disappoint. Top notch food and service! Their saba shioyaki is probably one of the best I've had in my life and the motsu nabe is also one of the standouts. Bankie is always super kind and friendly which makes me feel like I have the best sister in the world. Words can't quite describe to express my gratitude for what they do.

Yelp
Ambience of the restaurant was very nice but the space is small so would recommend making reservations or coming early. The server was attentive and the food came out fast. The chicken kaarage had a nice light battering but I wish it was a bit crispier The takoyaki was good no complaints there. The miso soup that came with the mayumi nigiri combo was very flavorful and almost the highlight of the meal. The happy hour salmon avocado roll was about what you'd expect fish was good but nothing amazing. The fish in the mayumi nigiri combo tasted fresh. I wish the piece were a bit bigger and fattier cuts for the price. Matcha cheesecake was great way to end the meal. Would like to go again to try the nabe options.

Yelp
I wanted to provide an update about all of the great service we have continued to receive amidst COVID. They are consistently friendly, easy to order from (on instagram DM), and always have our orders ready when we want to pick up. Quality of the food has never wavered, and I so appreciate their attention to detail. As I mentioned in my prior review, we LOVE zuke with our sushi, and the last time we ordered, they put a complimentary serving of zuke in our to-go box to thank us for our order!! Super sweet. I will definitely continue to support during this pandemic, and I hope others will too!

Yelp
Absolutely loved everything I ordered. I'm from Japan and this is the closest thing I can find to the taste of home in SF. It isn't cheap but their dishes are very authentic. The waitress was very friendly too! My favorite was saba shioyaki and their nigori sake on their hh menu. Next time I want to try their motsu nabe and gyu-tan!! So so satisfied w tonight's dining experience!! Will def come back!

Yelp
We picked the right place and cuisine for celebrating! Excellent Dinner tonight for our daughter's very first wedding anniversary ! The chef owner is actually a colleague of Nobu and chef from Japan. Recently departed from Tamara located in Japan town SF, we use to visit regularly when the owners worked behind the sushi bar there, serving our family with creative omakase meals. We got to know Izakaya Mayumi owners very well because when they worked behind the sushi bar, they upped the service, yumminess and presentation! So when they decided to open Izakaya Mayumi , we naturally followed! Oh my goodness.. this place is more than awesome! Btw... our chef friends, both Japanese and non Japanese, recommends local crafted delicious HOLYCRAFT beer with our meals. Wow wow wow! What a marriage! Dinner for 4 consisted of: *Miso Soup $3 *Scallop Croquettes 2 pcs for $8 *California Rolls fresh crab & avocado $7 (5 stars) *Takoyaki ( octopus balls, deep fried) comes with 6 pieces $8 (5 stars) *Shrimp Tempura Rolls made with fried shrimp and avocado $10 ( 4 1/2 stars) *Combination Nigiri Plates- 10 pcs chef's choice $30 ( 4 1/2 stars) *Chicken Karrage $9 whole thighs fried (4 1/2 stars) *Hamachi Collars (5 stars) Service takeout 5 stars Go get em!

Yelp
The restaurant is run by a Japanese owner, Japanese pop songs are played inside the restaurant, making you feel like you are on a trip to Japan. The sushi and sashimi are fresh and delicious. The presentation and taste are very elegant, and you can enjoy a moment of refinement. The kushiyaki are also very tasty. The deep-fried tofu was soft and very tasty. The atmosphere in the restaurant is calm and comfortable. The owner is also a very polite person and made me feel at home in the restaurant.

Yelp
My BFF stumbled upon this place on Yelp and the photos looked so good that it made us want to try! We usually enjoy nigiri so maybe my standards were a little high coming into this meal since the reviews of the food all sound so good. It wasn't bad but I wasn't necessarily impressed due to all the good reviews about the fish and the Nabe. Also the price point is a little on the steep side for the quality and flavors, but it's understandable since this is SF. We ordered some nigiri, rolls, uni spoons and a Chicken Meatball Nabe. The nabe looked pretty big in pictures and it's $21 but it was pretty small when it came out - more like for 1 person and maybe not filling enough. We opted for the soy broth base since the waiter said that the spicy miso is really spicy and they cannot adjust the spice levels. The broth itself was fine but nothing special. The chicken meatballs were pretty bland. I believe it came with 6 small meatballs and we only ate 1 each and left 4. It was a little disappointing because I was really looking forward to the Nabe on a cold day. The uni on the spoons $18 for 2 spoons was actually one of my favorite items there. Even my BFF who normally doesn't care for uni because of the fishy flavors enjoyed the spoon as well. The ikura, uni and sauce went well together. The nigiri had very minimal flavor. I don't believe they add any type of sauce to the nigiri. We ordered the A5 wagyu $20 for 2 pc and it was a little underwhelming. All the nigiris had too much rice and the sushi rice didn't taste like it was marinated. The hokkaido scallop nigiris $9 for 2pc also didn't come dressed but the piece tasted fresh and soft. The aburi toro nigiris $17 for 2 pc were ok. The toro nigiri was soft and tasted fresh but I'm used to it being marinated in a light sauce. However, all the nigiri was decent. Not bad but not great or what I was expecting. We also came right before happy hour was over, so we ordered an avocado salmon roll and a california roll which was $7 each for 6pcs each. The rolls came with lots of rice and they're decent rolls. We love negi toro rolls and that was pretty good so we ordered 2 rolls of this ($10 for 6 pcs per roll). I did like that they offer outdoor dining and indoor dining with proof of vaccination. The service was good - we ordered hot tea ($3 per cup) and the staff filled it up when we were running low which is very appreciated. Maybe I'll give it another try and order more cooked or grilled food than nigiri since they have a pretty extensive menu.

Yelp
I've been searching for a yummy, authentic izakaya restaurant in SF and finally found it! Since discovering Izakaya mayumi, I've eaten there 3x in one week! That's how good it is. The menu offers an assortment of dishes, including daily specials. Everything we ordered was delicious and the quality is excellent. Thank you for this special restaurant. Can't wait to go back :)
