Dear baby Jesus,
Yes, the baby one.
I don't believe in you, but what a fun expletive to blast off a review.
It was my dear friend D's birthday, and she likes to eat a lot of food and good food. My other friend, H, and I are broke motherfuckers, so we had to think quick on our feet. Remembering that D lUrVeS~~ Mexican, I suggested Izzy (as I will now refer to this place).
The space is laid out bizarrely, service is unhurried, and we weren't informed there were non-alcoholic drinks to purchase (you can BYOB), but who the fuck cares?
For 22$, we had a FEAST.
The salsa and chips are excellent starters and disappeared rapidly. They were spicy in a pleasant, lingering way, which sent D and H for the water and me for more. I more or less chose D's menu (H is a vegetarian-enough and ordered a veggie burrito, which she said was great).
So, when the sopes al pastor and fried steak tortas showed up, I was wriggling in my seat.
The sopes! 8$-something! Thick fried corn tortilla! A little salsa of tomatoes! Lettuce! Quesa! Sour cream (I think?)! THE AL PASTOR, LADIES, GENTLEMEN AND UNICORNS. THE AL PASTOR.
I can't even begin to describe its flavor, but the pineapple cut perfectly through its heady meatiness until your mouth was sweetly singing to you.
And the tortas! Soft bread, mayo, avocado, little bits of that special stringy cheese, a succulently fried steak! I don't like beef, but I gobbled up my half.
I can't decide whether Veracruzana or Izzy will be my go-to, so I propose more research.
