"Iztatl Cocina Mexicana, a new Mexican restaurant opened this week in the space formerly occupied by Taqueria La Estrella, which closed early in the pandemic, Block Club reports. The owner, Victor Martinez, wants to offer his customers more than the standard tacos and burritos, and plans to concentrate on the cuisine of Guerrero, where his family is from." - Naomi Waxman

Loved these steak tacos! Meat was tender and well seasoned, not chewy or with any fat trimmings. The green and red sauces, however, rival my mom's! Very savory sauces with mild to medium spiciness, not overwhelming, an excellent addition to the tacos. The complementary chips were well cooked, golden and crispy was a plus! The price was decent and well deserved, and service was friendly. Overall a great experience for those wishing to take a break from their errands on an off day. Will definitely come back when I'm in the area!

Google
Just discovered this gem in my neighborhood, and if you want fresh, healthy, and excellent service, I highly recommend it! The taco dinner was so fresh and full of amazing flavor. The chicken was tender and seasoned perfectly! The chicken burrito was also full of delicious flavor, and the beans and rice were perfectly cooked as well. Highly, highly recommend 👌

Google
One of the best carne asada burritos I have had in a very long time. Very affordable prices and also convenient location with just a short walk away from the blue line station.

Google
This place has the best steak burritos around! We have so many other Mexican places closer to us, but they're all just mediocre. We go out of our way to go to Iztatl because they know what they're doing! I've only ever picked up food from there and the people are always super nice.

Google
Food was delicious, hot and reasonably priced. It's amazing what a difference it makes putting the cheese on the tortilla side of the burrito instead of cold in the middle of it. Shrimp taco was amazing as well. I will definitely go back. Parking is non-existent unless you're willing to walk a quarter of a block. I think that's the only bad thing I can say about this place and that's not even their fault.

Google
This place is right up the street from my home, so we were ecstatic to find something so close! They haven't been open that long, but we found them a year into being open. There was a lot of consistency when we initially started eating here. We loved it! Like weekly loved it..lol. BUT, as of late, the last 4 to 5 times at least that we have gone here, it just isn't the same. No flavor, so taste as all. Bland, rice Included. We would try to space out the visits/ordering to see maybe if it was an "off" day, but when we have gone back..the same or worse. It started to be horrible to the point that we are in search of a different spot. I can say that the when we have visited in the past, the young lady that was there, we don't even see her anymore..or the Cook that use to be there. Needless to say, we are underwhelmed and probably won't be returning. I gave a 2 star rating because the ingredients seem to be fresh.

Google
Love this restaurant! They pack the to-go orders so well that I can easily split mine into two meals. The food tastes authentic, seasoned perfectly, and they’re always quick with their orders. Their red salsa is a favorite—rich, smoky, and with a nice kick. I usually go for the tortas or tacos—you can’t go wrong with either!

Google
Super tasty! We got take out: steak burritos and chicken tacos and both were delicious.

Yelp
Clean and brand new layout but lacks personality. Doesn't feel like a mexican restaurant feels like I'm about to get my taxes done. Besides that the food is priced fairly for being in the city. Horchata: Good flavor not watered down like most places do. Milanesa Torta: Some spots have sad or old looking lettuce or tomatoes but this place had nice fresh ingredients. Breading was nice and crispy, not soggy which is a common problem with milanesa. Asada Burrito Meat is a bit tough and seasoning could be a bit better.

Yelp
Great restaurant! They were amazing, everything was made fresh and they were very accommodating. I loved the homemade quesadillas and the price was right. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We were doing some house shopping in the area and stumbled upon this place based on a random stranger's advice. I'm so glad we listened! They are clearly just opened and working to get the place set up and running so there's a little bit of clutter and no seats. Luckily we were ordering to go so no big deal. The burrito I ordered was outstanding! Perfect size, excellent ingredients, and very well balanced! Burrito places are a dime a dozen in chicago and some completely miss the mark. Not here! They're doing it right! The staff was very friendly and attentive. We were helped quickly and efficiently! It turns out that we found a great house nearby and can't wait to come here as often as possible! Absolutely recommended!

Yelp
I ordered chilaquiles for pick up. It was a quick pick up and a nice place. The food is delicious! I am happy to have ordered from here.

Yelp
Live in the neighborhood, been here a few times recently, probably not going back again any time soon. There's little to no seasoning on much of the food - very bland, certainly nothing special. Often as not, the beans are crusted over. The rice looks and tastes like it's from a store-bought mix that was made the day before. The service is not great. Staff seem like they're checked out and want to be anywhere but there. Literally the only ones in the restaurant and it took 20 minutes for the food to come out - when it did, only got half of one order and the other order was overcooked to the point of inedibility. Definitely agree with other posters on the decor - the place feels cold and clinical and not at all inviting. So, food is bland, service is bad, atmosphere is bad. These aren't insurmountable problems if the management/employees would give half an ounce of effort, but so far there's been little evidence that anyone who works there actually cares about the place.

Yelp
It's been a long time since I reviewed any thing but I am new to the neighborhood and TOS place is great. Everything is great.

Vito P.

Yelp
The inside was completely barren and lame. The service was good and always kept water flowing but the food was absolutely bland.

Sherry C.

Yelp
I'm so disappointed, my first time trying this place and all I got was a mouthful of gristle. I ordered a steak torta.. I took a few bites and every bite was filled with gristle. Instead of eating I was spitting out hard pieces of cartilage/ nerve. Very cheap under seasoned meat. Not to mention the torta was very greasy to the point where the bottom bread was soaked in grease. I wouldn't waste the time or hassle fighting Jefferson park traffic coming here. It's worth spending a few more dollars and going somewhere better. I really had high hopes for this place but this is inexcusable.

Steven C.

Yelp
Excellent large fresh cooked burritos! Steak was fresh cooked for me. Nachos are homemade, excellent hot sauce.

Yelp
I want everyone to know that this place has the BEST Mexican food in the Jefferson Park area!

Daniel C.

Yelp
Had to go back. This time I treated my mom to such goodness. I got the same as yesterday. This time I got my mom the Chile Relleno tacos and steak tacos. She loved the Chile Relleno taco. She hasn't tried the steak yet but I know she'll like it. I ordered Horchatas. Now I've had better Horchata. This was a little watery but still pretty good. I hope they expand their menu. That way I'll only go here.

Shaun H.

Yelp
Tried out JP's newest addition and it was great! We had burritos. Good, somewhat standard, checked all the boxes. The grilled meat and the burrito itself being grilled added to the flavor. Looking forward to adding this into our rotation. If you've ever been in this storefront before, they really fixed it up and it'll be a nice, casual place to chow.

Yelp
This is the only decent Mexican restaurant in the Jefferson Park area. These are going to be your corn tortilla, onions and cilantro kind of place. Personal faves are their Al pastor and chicharron tacos. One point taken away for very slow service. I think they either need to hire one more person (which they may not be able to afford right now) or have a better system of taking orders and getting the food cooked quickly. Overall, I am so happy we have a good Mexican place in the Jefferson Park area. Hope they continue to do well and stick around.

Margaret A.

Yelp
Most atrocious Mexican food I've had in a longtime. Food was cold mushy and wet on arrival. The meat was tough and chewy. Will never order again.

Janna S.

Yelp
Service is here is so friendly and the burritos were the best we've had in this neighborhood by far! Definitely go for the Al pastor. My husband said it's the best he's ever had and I agree it was delicious. We ordered delivery directly from the restaurant over the phone. Our new go-to!

Christina K.

Yelp
All tasted authentically homemade. Those who ate meat said they meat was good quality unlike some places that leave in the fat . Rice, beans, pico and quac was all delicious and fresh. The chips looked and tasted homemade. Nothing was overpriced. Portions were great. The torta was humongous! Enough to feed two or save half for a late night snack . 10/10 we'd all order from here again. Delivery was fast and easy too. Didn't take any photos of our food but if you can imagine eating good food at family's, that's what this looked and tasted like to me. !Viva Mexico¡

Yelp
Overall good value, good flavor! As soon as I unwrapped my carne asada burrito I knew it was gonna be good and it did not disappoint! The flour tortilla was spot on. My wife had the al pastor tacos and both agreed that flavor was not there; plus not a pineapple in sight :( I suspect that they don't make it on the trompo since it was a little dry. Still, not bad, just not amazing. Looking forward to trying a few more things on there menu!

Cesar B.

Yelp
Food was ok at best. The steak is poor quality and the chile relleno was dry. The Al pastor was barely edible I would not eat here again.

Eric G.

Yelp
Best Mexican food I've had in years. Lady's working here are nice and food is fresh. I'm loving the Chicago Mexican food.

Robin T.

Yelp
I was so happy to see that this new local restaurant was serving tacos at Jeff Fest this weekend. I have been wanting to try them and just haven't made it there yet. Really good. Fresh and authentic. I tried the steak tacos and also sampled a bit of the chicken. Loved the steak and the chicken was amazing. The salsas also very good. Tried both...one with more heat, one for people that prefer it toned down. I can go either way and liked each one. Friendly people working their Fest booth. Great addition to the neighborhood

Yelp
I love this joint!!!! Best pastor tacos!! Come try them and get the word out Jefferson Parkers! Met one of the owners today, so very friendly and the staff is wonderful!! I have high hopes for this place.

Suzy O.

Yelp
Great asada tacos with onions and cilantro. Even came with lime wedges. Will definitely order from here again.

Tessa B.

Yelp
Fresh, hot tortilla chips with two flavorful salsas were followed by perfect tacos and a burrito -- all with generous portions of meat at surprisingly affordable prices. I plan on returning over and over again!

Rolando R.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. I think the quality of their meats is great, and the Al Pastor is favorite around.
