Philly’s Best Pancakes and Waffles | Eater Philly

"Traditional and Japanese crepes, flavorful benedicts, and spins on French toast, pancakes, and waffles are what sets Izzy 33 apart. The brie pancakes, folded pancakes made with brie cheese, strawberries, a toffee sauce, and more, are a must-try here." - George Banks-Weston

Saddest Minneapolis and St. Paul Restaurant Closures of 2020 - Eater Twin Cities

"For twenty years people gathered through all weather on the sidewalk outside of Izzy’s on Marshall Avenue. By the time Izzy’s made the decision to close its flagship location, all of those storefronts were dark. While Izzy’s remains available in select grocery stores around the metro area, it’s just not the same as rolling up and choosing from wacky flavors like Midnight Snack, Irish Moxie, creme fraiche, and then trying to pick a second flavor for the tiny Izzy scoop on top." - Joy Summers

Easily one of the best breakfasts we had in Philly. The food was delicious, cooked perfectly, and full of flavor. A must-visit if you are in town. Definitely recommend!

Not many restaurants can elevate a basic breakfast to something special, but Izzy’s 33 does and does it well! Thick cut bacon and still crispy and delicious. Flavorful eggs, and perfectly seasoned and cooked home fries with peppers and onions. And the French toast without anything has a delicious egg batter - and with the berries and maple syrup, delicious! Terrific and friendly service on top of it all and a cool vibe and clean place. Can’t wait to come back after five and try the crêpes. And for something else that exceeds your expectations and has a cool vibe, check out this property. Convenient to everything and an oasis in the city. #lEtsreAlesTate #thehomeseller #LuxuryLiving #fitlersquare #localrealtor #YourRealtor #luxuryrealestate With Scott Geller, The Home Seller

This place is really good. We had a large party of 12 and we didn't have any problems with them. Great service and amazing food.

When I say my Crème Brûlée French toast was the prettiest plate ever—like ever!!! Haaaaa After I got over how pretty she was LOL I went in! One bite and my French Toast dance was activated Lol. I couldn’t tell if I was eating French Toast or Crème Brûlée. It was sooo good!! Soft, lightly sweet and moist!! I can’t wait to go back to enjoy the banana foster lol Their home fries were well seasoned and yummy! Eggs and bacon were yummy. My caramel latte was soo perfect I didn’t need to add anything to it. Can’t wait to return. Ooh custom service was warm and welcoming. Ooh lol and while this spot is super cozy, they do have a small patio in the back with heated lamps. Enjoy and happy eating!

Google
This was hands down one of the greatest brunches I’ve had here in Philly. Literally everything I had was delicious, especially their Benedict with Chorizo. My plate was EMPTY. I most certainly will be back soon.

Stopped by Izzy’s after some searching to support small and POC business on a Wednesday morning. Small and welcoming! Our server was wonderful! Many options to choose from and it was good!

Every time my bus was rerouted to 9th street, I would see Izzy’s and think to myself that I wanted to stop in one day. I finally had the opportunity and Izzy’s was delicious. It’s a cute breakfast and lunch cafe. I ordered a delicious hot chocolate and tasty huevos con chorizo. The chorizo had a touch of cinnamon that was a great compliment to the dish. Check it out.

Yelp
I don't know how I made it a year living in SP without coming to Izzy's, BUT now that I've had it I don't know how I'll stop!!! The French toast and cubano sandwich were so tasty. I also ordered a lemonade which was a nice balance of tart and sweet. Service was great and friendly even though it was a busy Saturday. We sat in their patio, which was beautiful! I'd totally recommend this place to anyone in the neighborhood.

Yelp
This was my first time visiting this restaurant. I arrived with my wife and 2 kids 6 minutes past 8am, which is when they open. We stood in the entrance for about 2 minutes before someone who was walking through the back area saw us standing around. We were seated quickly as we were the only ones there. We quickly noticed a smell that was not pleasant. Musty maybe? Not sure, but my wife had some type of allergic reaction, watery itchy eyes and a sneeze attack as soon as we sat down. We ordered some food, the breakfast platter for the kids to share, huevos rancheros for me and the Mexican breakfast for my wife. I was pretty surprised about the 35 min wait, especially since there were no other customers, but once our food arrived we could see the attention to detail. The food was really yummy, plentiful and hot. Hot in temperature and in spice. My wife and I tried to share some of our meals with the kids but they were too spicy for them. I did wish there was an indication of spice level on the menu, but I didn't see that. So why only 4 stars you ask? Though the food was delicious and beautifully plated, I was a bit disappointed with the attention to detail for the customers. Our server only came to the table once to see if we needed anything and it was toward the end of our meal. As I was asking for something, she began walking away missing half of my sentence, which meant more work for her since she had to grab that item, come back and go back again for the other item I was planning on asking for on her first trip back to the kitchen. At this point there were 3 other tables with customers but still the wait staff was very sparse. Once we finished, my kids and wife left the restaurant because my kids couldn't wait any longer and I sat at the table for 8 minutes by myself, with my credit card in hand, waiting to pay. 4 tables full of customers and zero staff on the floor is never ideal. Would I come back here? Maybe delivery since the food was really great, but not with the kids again.

Yelp
This small BYOB restaurant is near the corner of 9 and Morris. My husband and I got here around noon and it was crowded. The dining room is small but not too overcrowded. They put cushions to sit people by the window. I like the red wall with gold accent on the ceiling trim and bathroom door because it gives a fancy look. The restaurant is nicely decorated with a small pot of plant on each table. We were served right away. On the menu they make crepes after 4 PM. There's a special menu on the blackboard. The menu has regular breakfast items and also some Mexican dishes such as chilaquiles and enchilada My husband ordered breakfast burger, which I never encountered before. It had burger patty with hash brown, egg, and bacon. He enjoyed it very much. He selected a bowl of fruit as side. The fruit bowl is bigger than those that are usually served in diners. Meanwhile, I ordered special item: crab meat omelette. My waitress asked what side I would like. The choices are salad, fruit, or home fries. I opted for the salad. When I got the food, it came with 2 slices of toasted white bread. I wished they offered wheat. They were generous with the size of the salad and the amount of crab meat. Unfortunately, my omelette was very salty. I understand that crab meat is salty but I felt like it was brined in salt. It's very rare to find me not finishing my food. This time I couldn't finish it because I could feel my blood pressure went up because how salty it was. They accept card payment but it is cheaper to pay with cash. I might give this place another try maybe the Mexican dish

Yelp
Super cute brunch spot and they have an extensive menu with delicious food! This is a BYOB place and they brought us out champagne glasses. It was a little drizzly out in Saturday, and their inside was filled up. But they had an outdoor covered patio that was perfect and equipped with patio heaters. Staff are super sweet and kind! There is a ~$7 discount if you pay with cash

Yelp
Cozy BYOB brunch spot. We had great service and loved the variety of Mexican and Italian options and twists on food. Gotta have the horchata as well.

Yelp
The food here was delicious. I got the chilaquiles which was 18 dollars and a great deal for the amount of food there was. All the food was extremely well seasoned and flavorful. I went with my friends for a brunch and the vibes were very casual and chill. There's a lot of natural light that comes into the restaurant which is nice. It feels very homey and comfortable. We found out that the place was BYOB once we got there, so I will definitely be coming back with some bottles next time I come. Overall, the price was very reasonable, the portions were big, and the food was all very delicious. I would definitely recommend and come back.

Yelp
A lovely brunch I went into blindly. I'm not typically a brunch person because I don't really like traditional breakfast things like eggs Benny or like French toast so when my friend suggested brunch here, that's all I was expecting since the name doesn't really indicate it's Mexican influence. So pumped after realizing that. Chips make eating scrambled eggs much easier, and beans make it even better (get the huevos a La mexicana) They had about a hundred different French toast options, which looked delicious (but I didn't try cause I'm team savory), and I was so happy to see a bunch of different sandwiches on the menu too, in addition to your typical suspects like avo toast and eggs your way. If there's horchata on the menu, there is also absolutely no way I'm passing that up, and I'm pleased to inform you that it is up to par; that should be the first thing you order. Next time, I'm bringing some champagne for brunch!

Yelp
Izzy's 33 is a great brunch option in the city! My friends got the Crab Cake Benedict which was a 10/10. Super flavorful and lots of delicious ingredients. I got the Brie and Provolone panini which was ok. Definitely very filling but tasted relatively plain. I ordered it because I wanted to taste the Basil aioli but is was barely noticeable. We shared the Churros French Toast which was amazing! Perfectly sweet with actual churro pieces and well balanced flavors. Loved the warm cinnamony taste, cold whipped cream and refreshing fruit on top. The horchata was overly sweet and tasted somewhat watery, so I don't recommend. All the portions were incredibly generous for ~$14 per entree. Egg and sandwich entrees came with ab option of home fries, regular fries or a side salad to pair! The restaurant itself is pretty small, with a handful of small tables seating 2-4 people. The surrounding area is very residential, so parking is limited and often difficult to find.

Megan G.

Yelp
The restaurant was horrible to deal with. I ordered a DoorDash order and the woman I talked to was rude and said they wouldn't make my order and they didn't get it, even though my order went through on my end and I could show her the receipt.

Yelp
Mexican Breakfast Stack $13 was very good. A good single portion but couple definite be shared. The sauce it came with had a nice spice that wasn't overbearing. There were also specials of the day. My friends got the birra tacos and red snapper and both enjoyed their meals. Inside is tight gets quit loud. Outside is covered and heated. Has three group tables and one for two facing the wall. Can also easily get loud. Very friendly service. Thank you for going along with the baby!

Yelp
3 reasons you should check out Izzy's 33: 1. Cozy neighborhood spot that's not too busy just off of East Passyunk 2. Delicious sweet and savory brunch options, a lot of them with a Mexican flair- tried the coffee cake French toast and the breakfast stack and there are so many other things on the menu I want to try! This would be a great place to bring a mix of people with basic taste in breakfast and others who want breakfast birria taquitos. 3. Fresh juices like Horchata and Jamaica. Not sure if they're byob but I feel like any place that doesn't have alcohol is? Looks like they used to do dinner but are no longer doing that, but they're open every day 8-3! Great spot for a weekday breakfast!
google avatar

Jeannie S.

Yelp
Wonderful experience here and great service. Came here for Mother's Day brunch and I am glad! Sweet waitress and tasty food. There's a huge selection on the menu so it's kind of tough to pick. I got the coffee cake French toast and it was so good! Not too sweet, although I think there's some granola bits thrown in, so if you don't want that you can probably opt out. The rancheros my husband got was delectable - eggs were cooked to perfection and a little runny, which is what made me wish I ordered that too (can never have enough food). I'd love to return! I do have to admit there's a smell of cigarettes, but have no idea what it really is. I used to be a smoker, so after smelling for a bit, it figure it might be something else and not someone literally smoking inside.

Yelp
Wow! Everything about this meal was sooooo good! Small, quaint venue with less than 10 tables, including a couple of high tops. They have specials, that by the way all sounded tasty. We ended up getting an egg any way, the chilaquiles with steak cooked medium and a banana fosters French toast. All three dishes were superb, but BABYYY that French toast was the star of the show. I wanted to lick the plate it was so good. This place does French toast well. It's buttery and crisp with the perfect balance of flavors for the toppings. This banana had this fantastic flambé flavor. My vanilla latte was perfect, Chef's kiss!!!

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Ambiance is chill. Only gave four stars because the place is small. Otherwise great. I had crab cake eggs Benedict, my husband had the breakfast burger and my daughter had the churro French toast. Everything was good and even better than it looked. The presentation is great and staff is accommodating and friendly. The place is run like a well oiled machine.

Yelp
Great place for brunch. I ordered eggs Benedict and my son ordered their a Nutella Croissant. Delicious!!! Neat place, clean and and great pricing
google avatar

Justus J.

Yelp
Let me tell you. 10/10. On the outside, this is a quaint place that packs a whole heap of flavor in their dishes. The French toast is exquisite and they offer a variety of options. Here you see the two types, the coffee cake and the churro French toast. Both are phenomenally delicious. You've got to try their specials that are handwritten on a colorful chalkboard that reflects the creativity of the menu. My Cesar wrap was phenomenal, which is something you don't hear often about a wrap. But, baby, this wrap!!! Crispy, crunchy, and flavorful to the last bite. I got a side salad that did not disappoint! I'd recommend this place to anyone who wants a great breakfast or lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
A gem! They have a nice combination of American and Mexican breakfast choices. We tried their brie pancakes, served with berries, toffee sauce, and whipped cream. Their pancakes are soft, fluffy, and delicious!! Great service and a clean restroom.
google avatar

Taylor S.

Yelp
I've been here twice and both times were phenomenal. The steak chilaquiles were delicious and well cooked. Also, the Nutella croissant French toast I recommend. It isn't over the top sweet and the croissant pairs perfectly with the Nutella.

Yelp
Great little place that's tucked away! Small intimate setting on the Inside. I got a beet juice that was very fresh, friend got the coffee that was very good. They had brown sugar cubes on the table which was different but nice different! I got the Mexican breakfast stack and my friend got the huevos a la Mexicana! Both dishes were delish and had us very full! The breakfast stack was so good all the flavors worked together and had me licking my plate. Friend loved the refried beans. Great place with lots of options for sweet to savory. Can't wait to bring some more friends!

Guadalupe D.

Yelp
Their times are so messed up and when I asked if they were still taking orders one of them was being rude and took another persons order in front of me. My friend order about $120 worth of crepes through grub hub WHEN IT SAID IT WAS OPEN and didn't get our money back. Do better with your hours ‍
google avatar

Kelsey T.

Yelp
Nutella Croissant French Toast Breakfast and scrambled eggs FTWWWWWW. Sooo good and a must visit!
google avatar

Belize G.

Yelp
The best brunch we've had so far in South Philly and it's BYOB The ham and Brie sandwich was delicious with the strawberry jam in between the sourdough slices. The breakfast burger was hands down the best burger my boyfriend has ever had. To top it off we had to share one of the sweets and the crème brûlée was not too over powering with sweetness. I say it was just the right amount. Y'all need to come try this place out !!
google avatar

Yelp
Adorable place inside and out, clean, great service. Food was delicious and big portions for great price. I will definitely be back!

KM B.

Yelp
The carnitas skillet made me physically ill. It tasted worse than it looked. When I expressed my concern about the taste of the dish, the server said "it was a very popular dish" and wouldn't remove it from the bill even though I hardly touched it. I couldn't even get a refill on coffee as the server became completely inattentive after I expressed my concerns. I downloaded this app specifically to share this review, by the way. One week ago I dined there with friends and had a great experience. What a difference a week makes. Thankfully, there are a lot of other great brunch options in this neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
An amazing hidden gem near East Passyunk!! The service is great, everyone is very sweet and polite. The food OMG!! If you want to have good steak for a affordable price, this is the place! The meat is tender and seasoned well, fruits are fresh and cold, and the coffee is nice and simple. Definitely will come back
google avatar

Danielle B.

Yelp
WOW!!! This place is amazing, from the fresh orange juice to just the side of eggs. I have nothing bad to say. If I lived closer I would be back often to try all they have to offer. It's a small little space (looks like a house converted to a restaurant), so if it's busy expect to wait. It isnt that big of a deal. You gonna wait at another spot anyways for a Saturday breakfast. It's down in south Philly. There's street parking, but it may not be that close. Go try this place, I swear you will find something that you will want to try.
google avatar

Erika W.

Yelp
Amazing breakfast for me! I had the crabcake eggs Benedict which was perfection! Perfectly seasoned crab cake and hollandaise sauce with the added creaminess of the egg yolk and greeness of the spinach was to die for. Homefried potatoes were slices and had the perfect crunch like french fries typed with onions and peppers. It was too much for me to eat in one setting but made for a good lunch as well! My friend had the pancakes and said it was OK and another friend had the eggs my way and he also said just ok. I definitely won the ordering lottery but they also ordered the most basic things on a menu that had so many interesting offerings. The setting is warm and cozy. Waitress was friendly and food came out without much wait.

Julia F.

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about this place. Everyone who works here is lovely. The food is amazing. My go to is the fresas con crema French toast and home fries. I've also had the brunch burger and the heuvos rancheros which were fantastic as well. Decent prices. Cute space.
google avatar

Candy C.

Yelp
It's a brunch place, possibly with the best fries I've ever had? It's fluffy and soft on the inside, and perfectly crispy on the outside. They also make some great French toast. The service is great and lovely ambience.
google avatar

Cayla S.

Yelp
While visiting friends in Philly, we went here for breakfast. I LOVE discovering little small places with cozy vibes and good food. Due to the pandemic, there were only 3 tables in the entire place. With a reservation, we couldn't linger and just drink our coffee. The food was so delicious and much more than expected. The service was friendly and quick. I highly recommend Izzy's if you're in South Philly.
google avatar

Kathryn C.

Yelp
Cute new spot off of Passyunk! They have a really cute backyard space and is covered in case it rains! The staff was super nice and went above and beyond to make our experience great! First time I was there we got an omelette with toast and potatoes. Also got pancakes with chocolate chips, strawberries, and bananas. Both were delicious! You definitely don't leave hungry if you finish your plate but the food is not made with extra oil so your not overly full either!

Dallas J.

Yelp
The food was presented and tasted amazing! The service was as expected, very polite, speedy, and personable. Lastly, the ambience was great! They had nice music steaming and it made the feel of everything very upbeat!
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Tried this new spot in Passyunk and sat out in their little back garden! They are cash only so make sure to bring that with you and they also don't have alcoholic beverages. They have really great iced coffee and lemonade! The food was beautiful and the waitress was great! They provided a mask for my friend who dropped his on the ground. We got the Huevos, Avocado Salad, Fritatta (be mindful it comes like a scramble), and the fresos con crema French toast. Everything was delish! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Tiffany K.

Yelp
Outstanding little brunch place! The food was incredible and our waiter was extremely nice. He explained everything on the menu and specials in detail. He was attentive and kind. The food was stellar. We had the cinnamon bun French toast special and the chillaquiles rojos! Cinnamon bun was not overly sweet but the perfect decadent brunch. The chillaquiles were flavorful and delicious. We will absolutely be back to try more!
google avatar

Ali S.

Yelp
I had Izzy's Breakfast Sandwich. It was delicious! My sister in law had the crab cakes benedict and they looked so good(they said it was super delicious!)
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Entire place smelled like cigarettes for some reason. Not the ambiance I want when eating breakfast.

Camila C.

Yelp
Izzy's was great. Good value & prices, great food. Perfect byob place for brunch /breakfast
google avatar

Beth M.

Yelp
Just an update on another great breakfast at Izzy's. I'm so glad they survived the pandemic. I enjoyed the Mexican Breakfast Stack on the lovely covered patio, and it was fantastic. Eggs were perfectly cooked, and the whole dish was a flavor bomb. Latte was good, and fresh squeezed O.J. a sweet treat. Lovely service and a fair price for the quality and quantity. Highly recommended.

Alyson V.

Yelp
The food was excellent and the service was amazing. We will be coming back. I have allergies to many foods and the waitress took her time to ensure that everything would be okay. So yum!!

Tevin J.

Yelp
Drinks were good and super cute restaurant. Service was great and food was delicious.

Avi K.

Yelp
This place is adorable. The prices weren't expensive and this was the first time I've ever went home without leftovers! It was so good I couldn't stop eating. ORDER THE HOME FRIES!!! I promise you will not be disappointed! They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Simply beautiful :') We ordered the eggs benedict and customized waffles with nutella, strawberries and whipped cream. The waffles were perfectly cooked into the nutella and were very moist. The eggs benedict was perfect with the english muffin being toasted and the eggs perfectly poached. We also ordered a side of scrambled eggs and horchata-- horchata being the only thing that disappointed us because of how watered down it was. The waitress was nice.

Hose E.

Yelp
Best food as well as service , also the vibe is amazing Coffee Cake French Toast is the best
google avatar

Zareena M.

Yelp
Great food and service, missing star is just due to size of the space. Parking is a slight hassle but well worth it.

Madelyn K.

Yelp
Went with a group of 4 and everybody absolutely loved their dishes. The servers were lovely and we were able to eat outside in the back patio with heaters in the middle of December. Highly recommend!

Christina P.

Yelp
I stopped in for lunch and got the Scrapple hash :-)

Joe G.

Yelp
If you want an amazing meal, in a non pretentious atmosphere, check out Izzy's. Pasta to die for, soups that are out of this world and amazing brunch. My new favorite restaurant in South Philly. Will be back!

Sarah G.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice and it was great. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was excellent, especially the huevos a la Mexicana, Brie pancakes, churros, and the chilaquiles. I recommend sitting outside on the cute private patio to enjoy an iced coffee!

Whoy G.

Yelp
I live a block away and this was a new discovery for me. They've been here a year so that's my loss. Menu, both brunch/lunch and dinner look intriguing. My wife and I split the ham and Brie, and the prosciutto panini and where very happy with serving size and quality. So many places just toast the outside and call it a panini but the cheese was actually melted which is rare but delicious . The fries were excellent and every dish which went by us looked good. Next up will be a test of the dinner menu.
google avatar

Jesse T.

Yelp
This is your favorite brunch places's, favorite brunch spot. Food is slamming. Savory, sweet, authentic, and everyone here is so nice. My only apprehension is that it will start to fill up like the rest of them, but these people deserve all the good. This place is a grand slam!

Cinthya A.

Yelp
Delicious french toast(s)! We ate here in person a while ago and had a wonderful experience--no need to add syrup or anything as their plates are generous and flavorful. This time we ordered delivery since we were craving their french toast and we were not disappointed! Their food is fresh and delicious--highly recommended!
