Eight Scary Good SF Dishes Paired With Eight Classic Horror Movies | Eater SF

"To balance the body horror in The Fly, I suggest splurging on Izzy’s bone-in ribeye; it’s a generous, sharable steak that feels special enough for a romantic, slightly decadent movie night." - Eve Batey

Santa Monica Restaurants React in Aftermath of Police Brutality Protests | Eater LA

"Izzy’s owner Izzy Freeman said he spent the whole night carefully watching his security cameras from home and described the night as 'very scary' after police ordered staff to vacate; he acknowledged that while not all impacted businesses will come back, people will try to rebuild as they did after 1992." - Farley Elliott

Izzy’s is a timeless classic and a real treat when I return to Little Rock to visit. The food is always fresh, top-quality, perfectly prepared, and consistent across years. I’d been away a decade and returned there last Wednesday. I crave their Humus, and was not disappointed, the plate is a masterpiece! The hardest part is to decide between the many wonderful and unique dishes they offer, but I am never disappointed. Dessert is easier, for me, their lemon icebox pie is heavenly. Service matches their food quality. I wish there was an Izzy’s where I live now. Try it! You will not be disappointed.

Google
First time going this evening and it was fantastic! I got a lunch portion of the spaghetti and meat sauce and a basket of bread. The potato soup is amazing! My fiance got the alfredo which he loved! The thin mint girl scout shake was also really good! Amazing service and friendly staff, will definitely be back again :)

Google
While the interior may take you aback with its very old decor, the service is fantastic. Food is okay, we like the pizzas, hamburger and several sandwiches are good. It may sound silly, but the decor and presentation of the aging interior puts us off a bit.

Google
Good food that’s fresh, locally grown and sourced. I think some of it is organic as well. We had salads and the portion sizes were good. The staff were polite and kind and the service was fast. Lunch times are busy but that didn’t slow our meal down.

Kristen H.

Google
Loved it!! We had a Grilled Chicken Sandwich with Sweet Potato Fries and the Chicken Salad with Fruit plate. Everything tasted so incredibly fresh, and we genuinely enjoyed our meal!! Our server Charlie was amazing!! She went far above and beyond for us, and gave us some great information about the area! If you are on the road and looking for some healthier options, you need to go to Izzy's!!

Google
Izzy’s is a great restaurant. I have eaten there almost every week for years. The food is fresh and well prepared. I may like one thing better than another, but I feel all their food is quite good. The wait staff is great. Some have worked there for years. I had not had their spaghetti bolognese before but when I tried it, it has become a regular go to. I really like it. Izzy’s is not the fanciest place you can go to. But I think it is great. It feels like home to me. 4Certain Little Rock

Google
Huge menu from sandwiches to full blown meals. When ya go in here go empty and ready to fill up. Waiter was awesome other waitresses and staff was great. When anyone walked by the were checking your glasses. Will be back

Google
The customer service was top-notch! Bryce was the most attentive server! I am the queen of changing menu items to fit my unique dietary needs. Bryce and the kitchen staff executed each detail with precision. The menu is extensive with vegan and vegetarian options!

Yelp
Tamales are the best around. Cheese dip makes this a destination for my wife and I. Very creative menu - and service is spot on

Danny T.

Yelp
Food is good but nearly good enough for the price. Consistently one of our family's largest bills out.

Allison T.

Yelp
Wow! My first time here and am impressed with the quality of the food. Friendly people, comfortable space, easy parking, and great food. I'll be back!

Roger S.

Yelp
A unique restaurant with everything from simple salads to elegant steaks and everything in between. Highly recommend the salmon lite plate. You won't find better anywhere. Service is excellent, friendly and second to none. Perfect date night spot

Yelp
Their tamales are Americanized but absolutely delicious. The cheese dip that comes with the beef tamale platter is some of my favorite cheese dip in the state. I would remark on the rest of the food (that my friends rave about) but tamales are all I ever get since they're that solid. The service is always great and the ambiance is... well, it's family friendly. Lots of quirky paintings for sale hanging up.
google avatar

Yelp
What can't this restaurant do? It's a great sit down for lunch or dinner and the staff is great. It's a very healthy option and a nice time
google avatar

Meredith R.

Yelp
The service was gods for the most part. However the food wasn't. We had cheese dip...very delicious and perfectly hot. We got burgers. They were dry and tasteless. We ordered their "Izzy's All American" dessert. The brownie was obviously old as it was super dry and tasted like...an old brownie. My grandbaby ate the whipped cream, but left the rest. Their menu states they serve their brownie with Yarnell's ice cream...I don't think it was. I told the server the brownie was dry and he said he would tell "him", but didn't offer to take it off the bill. Lastly, it was me and my 7 year old. I think the server should have let me know the fries didn't come with the burger. Izzy's is overpriced. The ambiance is nice. However, it was pretty cold in the restaurant. Almost all the patrons had their coats on.
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Service was good but the vegan options didn't live up to what was advertised on the menu. I had the veggie burger and fries and it was delicious. And there was some pretty neat artwork on the walls and tables.

Suzann T.

Yelp
Few restaurants have quinoa on the menu. That's an item I Love. I ordered the kale & quinoa salad. How disappointing. I couldn't find the quinoa. It would be like ordering a chef's salad with 1 teaspoon each of all other ingredients listed. Raw uncooked kale is all you'll get.
google avatar

Matthew K.

Yelp
A little pricey, the food was pedestrian, it did not blow my mind with flavor, considering the long drive from Bryant to there.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience. The place reminds me of Lord of the Flies (in a good way) since the entire team from there servers to the cashier all appear to be High school kids! Rustic, family owned, unique home made feel to the food are key features. I've tried the Asian salad which is not bad and is fresh and aromatic. The vegetable Tamales are my favorite snack. The Pesto shrimp past is also delicious and filling (even the lunch portion) They have souvenirs you can buy I clouding honey pots, T shirts etc. Closed on Sunday evenings.

Yelp
We had a wonderful Friday night mel in this cozy spot . The yummu velveeta rotel cheese dip an Arkansas staple was on point . As an appetizer . Hubby had the grilled chicken salad and I tried the old style chili covered tamales with shredded cheese and a side of lettuce . Both entrees were ample and tasty . A raspberry cheesecake pie with walnut crust was delicious . No wait what soever food to table was 7 minutes tops . Jeremey made the meal so pleasant with his attentiveness . A favorite go to place .

Yelp
The food was so good we ate it before thinking to take a picture. We ordered the veggie burger and a brick oven pizza. Both were fantastic! Service was great and the place is very clean. Lots of wonderful art work to enjoy too. Next time we're in town we'll be back.

Yelp
We choose Izzy's mainly for their gluten free options. The gluten free and other items we ordered were excellent. The number of available menu items was a nice set of varied options. It was a nice way to take a break from pre-Thanksgiving shopping.

Kristi C.

Yelp
I stopped for a quick lunch while running errands. Great, quick service. Cute little place - would be great place to visit with friends. I had the small Greek salad and vegetable tamale. They kindly put the cheese dip on side. Will definitely return to try some of their specialty hot tea. I didn't realize they offered it until after ordering iced tea.

Yelp
Stopped here after hiking in the pinnacle mountain state park. They had lots of options and the food was decent. Nothing to rave about but no major complaints either. Service was great.

Yelp
Izzy's is one of the most consistent, solid restaurants in Little Rock--serving a range of American staples that don't narrow to only fried or cheesy or meat-based options. Something here for a healthful or plant-based eater and someone who wants something heavier. I've had one of each section from their menu - pizza, sandwich, salad, tamales, the protein+veggie plates, and the pasta. All were so good. Nothing is exceptionally unique or innovative and yet, everything is just done well. One of my favorites here is the shrimp garden pasta and I get a side salad. The little things also take Izzy's up a notch - they have fresh leaf tea, hot or cold, on their menu, that you can also take home. I adore the lavender lemongrass. This has decent parking, educational materials up front about pollinator plants and insects in arkansas, and a big indoor restaurant, as well as a well-covered, comfortable outdoor space with fans and lighting. The wait staff and hosts are always timely, knowledgeable, and kind. Since I don't live in west Little Rock, I don't try to beat the traffic for Izzy's going west on a weeknight, but I stop there on weekends and always after a hike at Pinnacle or Rattlesnake Ridge.

Yelp
The service was good and the early dinner was also. I had the burger and chips, she had the salmon and we enjoyed, the cheese slice was expensive at $1.75. Over all nice. Not to busy. Thank you Amy for the great service.

Yelp
Lunch with family First time for adult son who got the tamales and said they were great! Smothered in chili with cheese dip on the side Was giant portion I had the Isabella salad which was great next time will request red onions to be added Think it would elevate it a notch Hubs had the Ruben which looked perfectly pan fried vs toasted Service was a little disjointed and slow Chips and cheese dip app was very average ball field type Not bad Satisfying but not special Overall like the happy casual vibe

Kynzie M.

Yelp
This is truly my favorite restaurant in LR. It is incredibly reliable, delicious, and calming. My happy place! The waiters make relationships with you, and they always remember my order (Isabella Salad everytime). I would literally be broken hearted if they ever closed.

Moss M.

Yelp
My sister was here from out of state so we went out to eat. She wanted to go to Izzy's because of a friends recomendation. I had never eaten there but was very pleasantly surprised. Good menu and good service. We all liked it. will be back.

Yelp
Passing through and this place was good & service too .. Doesn't give Military discounts but the manger or owner did say Thank you for your service (that's why I gave 4 stars instead of 5).

Bob W.

Yelp
Food was not very good. Rolls were impossible to cut with a knife. Salad had little to no dressing. Chicken entre was dry and tasteless. Service was adequate while refills were slow.

Ashlyn E.

Yelp
Consistently, one of the best places to eat in LR. Been going here for over 10 years now. Best food, service, hot teas, music, art, honey, organic everything, vegan, my happy place. Always amazing. 5

Yelp
In the even ending search for gluten free choices I found this little gem. In business since 1985, they boast a well rounded menu with sandwiches, burgers (veggie and meat options), tamels, salads, grilled chicken and some limited seafood. I originally was under the impression they only served vegan, but that's not correct. They have a "regular" menu with lots of options to swap the bread for gluten free choices. So far the burgers, sandwiches and tamales all have been great (the vegan tamale is very flavorful), however the taco salad was disappointing with an odd chili beef mix, it wasn't bad but not what we expected. Either way, great service everytime, they do take Apple Pay and are very friendly for anyone seeking a casual but excellent lunch or dinner.

Yelp
Wow! What a heart warming experience at Izzy's. From start to finish, we were treated with top quality service. Robert the owner displayed genuine care for our company. While our server Berto ensured that our experience was both comforting and tasteful. You can see the effort put into making this restaurant safe, enjoyable, and a bite to remember. We are so grateful to have devoured fully vegan dishes, met great people, and to have made a happy memory at Izzy's. Much love from the poetic Floridians

Tonya Y.

Yelp
Izzy's just never disappoints!! Some of our favorites are the seasonal salads (strawberry summer salad and harvest salad in the fall), chicken tortilla soup (it has an entire fresh grilled chicken breast in it, y'all!), and we cannot forget the tamales!! The wood-fire pizzas have never disappointed either.

BS K.

Yelp
First time here. It's a hidden gem. We had the veggie tamales and cheese dip appetizer. Really good . The black bean soup very flavorful. Veggie quesadillas delicious.
google avatar

Mirinda D.

Yelp
As good as I remember! Haven't been to Izzy's in about 18 years and it did not disappoint. Good food and good service.
google avatar

Ebony K.

Yelp
The vegan options here are wonderful!!! The vegan tamales are life Changing, don't think just order them. The portion sizes are perfect My husband had the veggie burger that he raved about as well. This is a great spot, with many choices for people who are vegetarians, vegan or need gluten free options. Yet open enough you can get regular menu options as well.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Best cheese dip in town. I love the chicken Isabella salad! Awesome tamales. Good service!

Ann F.

Yelp
I don't eat at Izzy's often because it's no longer in my neighborhood, but I have always had good food, good service, and a pleasant dining experience. The veggie tamales as an appetizer are my favorite thing. Excellent variety, so everyone in your party can find something to eat, even picky eaters.

Joe G.

Yelp
Went here for the first time tonight at the recommendation of a neighbor. Started off with the tamale plater as an appetizer. Very tasty. I had the Asian chicken salad. It was ok. My wife had the shrimp pesto. Large portion but lacked in flavor a bit. Our server Elizabeth was pleasant. If possible I would give this 3-1/2 stars. We may try it it one more time.
google avatar

Tara M.

Yelp
The food was good. Some is priced a little high. They have gluten free menu and a vegan menu. So many options. My favorite thing was the raspberry cream pie. The cheese dip was ok. Tortilla chips were a little salty. The grilled cheese was definitely cheesy and had a nice twist with the jalapeño cheese. The BLT pizza has a lot of lettuce on it. The kids alfredo with noodles was so creamy and thick. The Teas are very good. Tumeric ginger settles your stomach. You get to take your tea leaves home and brew 3 more times. Plenty of big tables for large groups. Quick service. Our waitress was very attentive and sweet.

Yelp
Always on time and consistent quality. Good healthy food. Love mini plate and chicken tortilla soup.

Yelp
We enjoy Izzy's a couple of time per month! There's a good variety and highly recommend the Ruben, tamales, and lasagna! See! That's variety for you! Good food, great service.

Yelp
A friend highly recommended the locally-made face masks at Izzy's. She told me about the website where you can see the current inventory. So I called to place the order for the mask and the Mixed Tamale Platter (one vegetarian and one beef). The mask is super nice. The background color is more navy blue than black, but it's still the nicest one I've seen, felt, and worn in a while. It is a nice quality material with the wire that makes the nose area fit. Will update how it washes. The tamales were ok. Not thrilled with the indigestion flare up I got from them. I like Trader Joe's refrigerated chicken ones better. The chips provided with the meal were stale. However, the salsa was fresh and tasty. This was a phone order, paid over the phone with curbside pickup. They added an 18% gratuity. I wasn't sure if it was optional or not. Not sure I should have agreed to pay the gratuity for the mask? Isn't it like paying a gratuity for restaurant merch?? I drove almost 30 minutes in each direction to get the mask and tamales. I would not go back again just for the tamales. Possibly to try something else or get more masks? I have been here before but it's probably been more than 5 years. The bottom line: The food was not worth the price or drive time.

Yelp
Gluten Free Review +gluten free menu +gluten feer beer (Redbridge) +gluten free bread (Dempsey Bakery) So if your highly allergic to wheat, gluten, or a different kind of food allergy this is your place. If you know your limits on what you can and can't eat this place is amazing. Moving to Little Rock I was scared to think this city wouldn't have any good gluten free options, however after discovering Izzys I was made, this little joint off Cantrell is wonderful and quirky all on it's own. It's a real locals joint with a real down home southern feel to it, the staff and people at the front are always nice and get you a table real quick. The gluten free menu is large (see photo) has many options for main courses, apps, dessert, beer, and what not. I've tried a lot of stuff but can't wait to go back to try more. I always start with a fresh brewed at your table black tea and then pour it over ice. Yes brewed at your table, epicness. Go check this place out. The BLT and Nuttybird are my favorite dishes. Only downside is they close early and there closed on Sundays. Thank you Izzy's for providing the local community with an option to serve people with dietary restrictions, your amazing.

John R.

Yelp
A friend and I have been going to Izzy's for a few years. The food is decent if not a bit overpriced. The problem I have with this place is the current manager. I went in today 02/23/2023 with my friend for a late lunch around 2:00 pm. My friend ordered the Pesto Chicken and I had the Lasagna. The chicken was VERY dry and my Lasagna was cool in the middle again like it wasn't microwaved long enough. Both dishes come with your choice of white or wheat "rolls". The "rolls" that come with the dishes are hard as rocks 90% of the time. In the past we have asked if we could substitute a piece of toast in lieu of the "rolls" and were told we could but there would be an additional charge for doing so. I'm not sure why substituting one type of bread with another would, or should, cost more but we opted not to get the toast at the "additional charge". We have voiced our opinions about the "rolls" in the past and even had the wait person bring out new ones. Today, my friend opted to not even get the rolls with his lunch because of the past experiences. I told the waitress I would have the white "rolls" as long as they were fresh. (I prefer wheat bread but with the white "rolls" you may get lucky and get one that isn't hard as a rock). At checkout, the person at the register asked how everything was and I replied "everything was fine except for the "rolls"". Her canned answer was, "did you let your waiter know?" I told her that their rolls are always pitiful. About that time the "manager" showed up behind her and she half smart-assed said they didn't like the rolls. His VERY smart-assed answer was "one in one hundred" as if he couldn't care less about it. I said you can't tell me that more people aren't complaining about these rolls. He laughed and said "maybe one in one hundred". I said I expect more when I'm paying $50.00 for lunch. He basically laughed and was laughing as I exited the door. This is the same "manager" that was a smart-ass the last time my friend said something about how bad the "rolls" were. It's taken a while but after todays experience, I can honestly say that I will not be going back to Izzy's. They state that their food is made daily but I've been told by previous waiters that the "rolls" are brought in frozen. The lasagna has been cool in the middle more than once as if it didn't stay in the microwave long enough. Their salmon is tasteless, and their chicken is dry a lot of the time. Their mediocre food is no longer worth my hard earned money and I sure as hell won't support a place that has a "manager" that thinks the customer is the problem. The managers ego has not only cost this place two long time customers and their families but has also cost his staff in the way of tips, not to mention the business bottom line. To the owners: Good luck keeping customers with this guy at the helm. I realize he's been with you since he's been bussing tables but you may want to take a hard look and reconsider your choices in management. To other customers: If you enjoy the food, great. If you get food that is sub-par and you say nothing about it and continue to pay for it, it's your own fault that you're settling for "mediocrity at best".

Yelp
It is very clear this restaurant is a favorite of Little Rock, and now that I've been here I can see why. The menu has something to satisfy just about every taste. There's your soup/salad/sandwich section as well as a huge array of pizza and pasta, tossed in with a bit of Mexican. It was verging on overwhelming to look at the menu because I wanted at least 27 different things. My husband and I both settled on the tamales because they were voted the best, are handmade/hand rolled from their own recipe. I chose the vegetarian and hubby had the beef. Both were soooooo good! Oh my. Definitely the best tamales I've ever had. And coming from a place that isn't even marketed as a Mexican restaurant, that's saying something! We did save room for dessert so I had their lemon box pie with walnut crust. It was amazing. The crust really made the difference - made the whole pie if you ask me. Hubby chose the bread pudding with bourbon sauce. Menu says it's "award winning" and he would have to agree - very tasty! Very happy with our meal here. Sadly, Izzy's is 4 hours from our home so we won't be able to come here all that often. But we will be back for sure. I'd like to say I'll try something else on the menu, but I'm afraid it'll most likely be the tamales again. I can't help it; they were that good.

Christy B.

Yelp
The tamales with chili make my heart happy. Love all the gluten free options as well.

Bill B.

Yelp
Recently visited Izzy's with friends. We tried s wide variety of items off the menu and we were all very pleased!! Even had a dessert that was delicious! The service was very good!! We have eaten at Izzy's several times over the past few years and have always been pleased!! Quality food and good service make for a very enjoyable experience!!

Reagan A.

Yelp
I try to eat at Izzy's every time I'm in Little Rock. The garlic butter that comes with the bread is amazing, and the Alfredo pasta (with shell noodles, because the kids are right: shell noodles are the best) is to die for. I don't know how they make Alfredo taste so good, because it's not what I would normally go for, but the way Izzy's makes it is the best. Also, the decor is just fun and encourages Eye-Spy as an easy way to pass the time, which is good because the wait time between when you order and when you get your food is a little long.

Yelp
First off, this is not the pizza chain with the same name. I came across this place on a road trip. It is about 3 miles off the freeway but is a gem for the gluten free eater. They have a separate gluten free menu that replicates most of what is on the normal menu. The atmosphere is diner-esque with great service and a pay up front system. There is also an outdoor patio that is quite large. I had the Nutty Bird, which is a turkey sandwich with cream cheese. I also saw others ordering it so it must be popular. I know why..it is because it is so yummy! The cream cheese really does give it a unique taste I have never had before. The chips are gluten free as well and tasted great. Parking is easy and I wish they had one of these where I live.
google avatar

Stella Y.

Yelp
Ehhhh, 3.5. Try the tamales they all say. So I got the cheese ones and shared them since I wasn't that hungry. It came with two moderately sized tamales with cheese sauce. The tamale itself was pretty soft and the cheese sauce on top had a hint of spice but it was nothing that impressed me.

Yelp
Excellent service even though I misread the closing time and called my order in at closing time! They had my food ready to go and it was hot and delicious !
google avatar

Yelp
Im so glad Izzy's offers so many great vegan options! I love their tamales and potatoes. So well seasoned and such a great local eat!

Lindsey B.

Yelp
Great food, lots of options. I was able to eat as a vegetarian and my husband could still lorded what he wanted. They had vegan and gluten free options as well. They also had the option to get freshly brewed tea which. I thought was nice.

Maureen S.

Yelp
My first experience at Izzys was at a group gathering for lunch on Monday. My first impression was the immediate harshness of mask requirements and the protected seating. This was helpful last year but it's time to return to normal. I did notice there was mostly older customers so that might have diverging to do with it but everyone can and should be vaccinated in that age group. The service was good but not very friendly. The food was ok. Very basic choices that you would expect at a diner. Their specialty is tamales which my friend had and said were good. I'll go back when they loosen their mask and social distancing. We all agreed on this. It's just too strict and unnecessary if you believe in vaccines.
