My husband and I had visited my brother on the Cape and were leaving for home in North Carolina. Wanted to stop for a breakfast to get us on our way and pulled off the highway into New Bedford. Never been to New Bedford before as I grew up in Wakefield and Melrose, MA. We just drove down a main street and at glimpse, my husband's eye caught Izzy's Restaurant. He quickly asked me if I wanted to try it and not knowing it from anything else, I said, "Sure." We fed the parking meter and walked across the street. Right away we felt at home. I could tell that it was family owned and family run, just by the warmth of the conversations, including conversations in the family language. It felt similar to my Italian upbringing. Our waitress was a real sweetheart. She shared with us how she has been in America for four years now and has become an American citizen. I could see the pride in her face and in her voice. She treated us like guests in her own home. I liked the way another female relative who had been called to cook that day (July 2, 2013) had a warm conversation with two women who must frequent the restaurant. They seemed to know one another. It was nice. Our food was home cooking, very, very good. I am a real coffee drinker and I don't usually drink my coffee all the way down to nothing (I don't know why - because after a few cups, I've had enough), but this coffee was some of the most delicious coffee I have ever had and I drank it down, every drop!
I can't seem to forget the pleasant visit to Izzy"s and if I didn't live so darned far away from it, you can believe that I would be there often.
Thanks for the good experience!
