Here are 18 of the best restaurants to check out in Troy, Michigan | Eater Detroit

"A contemporary American restaurant known for its breaded or grilled seafood and extensive wine selection. Hooks under the bar accommodate multiple shopping bags, and during times of high volume, it’s encouraged to leave a name at the host stand and walk the mall while waiting." - Courtney Burk

Google
One fact about J’s: Always consistent and menu items mostly the same for past 20 years yields really good food served hot and fresh. Service is always impeccable. Good portions large and sides over the top. Best veggie burger and ahi tuna entree would be double the price anywhere else. Make room for dessert! Warm carrot cake with cream cheese frosting is decadent as is the warm pudding chocolate cake. Yum! French press coffee, strong and hot. Overall, excellent for both lunch and dinner. Make reservations in advance.

Google
Me and my family stopped by today. We got the Calamari as an appetizer and it was so fresh and fried just right! I had the Steak and Fries which was cooked to a really good medium. It has a butter that it is topped with but I ended up asking for more as I really liked the flavor. This was definitely part of the clean plate club, I highly recommend! Also, our server, Tobin, was very attentive and got us exactly what we needed, when we needed it! 10/10 Server!

Google
Would definitely order the steak burger again. The steak and fries was okay, nothing crazy about it. Calamari was amazing too, it wasn’t chewy and was fried perfectly. Chocolate cake was too sweet but I guess it all depends on how much a sweet tooth you are. During the time we ate it was a bit hot that’s the only reason why I had 3 star on the atmosphere. Service was good and everything came out in a timely manner. Cocktail was strong and good

Google
I had a great experience here. I had a creamy chicken pasta soup. It was like a pot pie minus crust plus pasta. It was delicious. I had Avocado bomb. Avocado w crab and tuna. Also good and a big portion. Also had Kentucky Old Fashion also very good. Service also stellar.

Google
My first time going and my experience was amazing! My boyfriend really out did himself picking this restaurant and the restaurant did not disappoint! The steak was juicy and tender, the chicken was perfection and the deviled eggs were so good! And please get you a lemon drop or three… ♥️

Joey K.

Google
Absolutely loved this place. The atmosphere was on point—great vibe, solid lighting, and just the right level of energy without being too loud. You could tell they put thought into the setup. The steak? Cooked to perfection—tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Everything came out hot and exactly how we ordered it. Service was friendly but not overbearing, which I appreciated. Overall, it just felt like a spot you actually want to come back to. Definitely recommend if you’re craving a quality steak and a chill, well-done environment.

Google
I went to J Alexander’s in Troy. I got me the Aji tuna was excellent. I ordered the Bernese steak fillet when they bring it out. It was cut in half only one they were trying to cheat me out of one so they come in a half that one was so burnt I sent it back and then they brought me two of them Was burned up like a hockey park. I got so pissed off and left. I don’t know what happened J Alexander’s I don’t know how they’re cheating people is not nice then I got me a wine. It was flats. They were trying to give it to me. It was already opened. I sent it back. What’s wrong with it they told me I just opened this bottle. I said not in front of me so One of the employees got me another wine I hate to post something like this because once somebody pisses me off, this is what they get. I want a manager or a owner or I spend over $250 every day I come every weekend and get treated like that

Google
The food isn’t good anymore. My prime rib was not a prime rib. Furthermore, it was dry and tasted like lunch meat. The cook didn’t really flame grill the steak. He just roasted it and added grill marks. Drinks were terrible as well. I will not be coming back!

Yelp
I've been going to J. Alexander's since high school, and I can honestly say I've never had anything less than an extraordinary experience. The star of the show is, without a doubt, their flame-grilled steaks, the New York Strip is my personal favorite. But the menu has plenty of standouts: the grilled salmon with orzo and wild rice is a close second, and if you're not super hungry, the chicken pasta soup is legit good enough to be a full meal. It's consistently on point. The carrot cake easily one of the best you'll find anywhere. Moist, flavorful, and perfectly spiced. As someone who loves a good drink, J's never lets me down. I especially appreciate how my Bombay Sapphire Slightly Dirty Martini always comes with that extra carafe on the side. After two of those? You might just be calling an Uber home! My favorite location is the one in Troy, but honestly, every J. Alexander's I've been to has been consistently excellent.

Yelp
I got the cheeseburger and fries. I added one more Patty for an additional $7 so it was almost a $30 meal. I was expecting a very good burger and it was average at best. There was not much taste to the patties and it was quite dense which is a good thing but not when it was dry like that. The fries were not crispy, were shoe string style. There was nothing fancy about the bun. It was a very ordinary burger that did not impress me. The ambiance when I went in was quite dark with low lighting. I can't speak to the service as I just had a pick up order.

Yelp
I went here thinking it would be a high end dining experience. The only thing high end was the prices. The place was so loud it was hard to have a conversation. The crowd was another story. I would have thought that I was at a fast food location based on tank tops, short shorts, ball caps, etc. Service was mediocre at best. Although the steaks were perfectly cooked I thought the Mac and cheese was disgusting but our server never returned to the table for me to say anything until she brought the bill. $47 for NY Strip, even perfectly cooked doesn't justify that price. $41 for Prime Rib is still high. I will not return.

Yelp
The variety of Food is really delicious as well as the friendly staff. You need to try it out!

Suzie W.

Yelp
We ordered carryouts, paid their stupid packaging fee and two separate orders in a row from them were incorrect. First order, we received a refund for just the missing items but they didn't refund the tip or packaging fee associated with the missing items. Second time, we ordered queso dip and they didn't include the chips. Talked to mgr and she said she would refund me. Then I got a call from the employee who packaged my order and he argued and said he put the chips in my bag but they were not there. We didn't want to go back to the mall to pick up the chips and no refund was ever provided. Very disappointing customer service and we have not gone back since. The least the restaurant could do is double check their carryout orders when they charge an additional fee for takeout orders.

Yelp
Always delicious food! We love it here! Great service. Good ambiance! We love J. Alexander's.

Yelp
Every time in the Troy area, this is a must go to restaurant for me and my friends and family. We try to make reservations as there can be a really long wait on the weekends If you have a larger group, go ahead of time and get your name on the list. Be vigilant because sometime they can skip the order on the list. It's a classier restaurant with dimmed lights. The bar is not super big so it's always packed. There are always wait staff zipping around so be sure to hold onto the little ones and be careful with elders. My go-to's are the seafood dip, sea bass and mashed potatoes, and their drinks. Don't be shy to try different appetizers as those are always good.
google avatar

Yelp
Never had a bad experience here...good service; good food. The server was very friendly and attentive and wasn't overbearing with "how's everything" every five minutes.
google avatar

Rebecca R.

Yelp
I hate to say it I really do but J. Alexander's is underwhelming. We went a few days before Christmas. I was excited to have a nice meal after shopping. We had an okay meal. Everything was okay. If I were honest my money would be better spent at a good hole in the wall taco joint.

Racquel S.

Yelp
I haven't been to this location in over a decade. It was a mixed experience. First, the interior could use some updating. My cypress salad was really good; I subbed in grilled chicken instead of the crispy chicken. Service was slow and very hit or miss. There were a total of 4 different people who waited on the table which was so strange and they said the original server was preoccupied. There was an issue with another entree at the table so that person had to order something else, delaying the meal quite a bit. The manager was apologetic and offered a complimentary dessert. Should have just comped that entree. I wouldn't go out of my way to return to this location. Service this mid on a slow Monday is...telling.
google avatar

Saige B.

Yelp
We started the night with the Calamari which was breaded with herbs and tasted delicious! The potatoes were so flavorful and the sauce on the side complimented the chicken very nicely. Our server Josh was amazing. He was so funny and charming, would 100% come back again!!

Linda S.

Yelp
This is my fav to take my team for birthdays and events.... Never ever have had anything not excellent and we always love the staff. I personally love the crispy chicken - but then I love the steaks - and the salmon....all delicious. thank you for continuing to impress.....
google avatar

Gracie M.

Yelp
Here again from California and had to come here to dine. It's located in the mall and there's plenty of parking. We came on a Monday without reservations and there was only a 10 minute wait. I highly recommend this restaurant it's perfect for date nights, girls night out , and even more. It was crowded with a lively crowd and the vibe was amazing. We were seated at a comfy booth and in no time our server Allie arrived. She was super helpful and sweet. We actually came here for the delicious ooey gooey carrot cake. But we ended ordering the Hong Kong chicken, veggie burger, lemonade, and the spicy margarita. Everything was delicious and all in all a great experience as usual. A special thank you to Allie for going over and beyond. Until next time and hopefully soon.

Yelp
Don't forget the artichokes! We stopped in for a lunch post pedicures at Nordstrom spa and it was exactly what we wanted. My mother, sister and I shared the wood fired artichokes as an app, always delicious especially with the aioli. For lunch, we all got the steak sandwich on special, absolutely the right move. Love their shoestring fries as well. Finally we split the carrot cake for dessert. Never forget the carrot cake.

Yelp
Saturday feb 10, 2024 my ladies and I celebrated galentines day. We loved it here. The lemon drops were amazing and strong per usual. The food was everything! The service was even better. Our waitress was such a sweetheart!
google avatar

Yelp
By far my favorite steakhouse in Troy, MI. It's centrally located at one of the premier shopping centers and the service is excellent. Dining in is the only way to do it. Especially after a long day of shopping. Hehe The steak Maui is rubbed with Kona coffee grounds and is absolutely divine. I highly recommend it to those that eat bovine. Softly lit and comfortable seating. I wouldn't go anywhere else!

Jackie M.

Yelp
Food was 9/10, very good--had the chicken platter not too breaded, very juicy and came with a good amount of coleslaw and fries-- my friends had salad that came with a lot of chicken! Service-10/10: waiter was togan very polite and attended to our services right away-- drinks were always full and did not have to wait past 5 minutes when needing something! Ambiance-10/10 booths are big and comfy, separated and far from eachother to mind own conversations! Warm and comforting environment

Yelp
Can't go wrong with stopping here for lunch or dinner! Have frequented here with both family and friends for years, and have always had a great experience. If there's one thing to know, it's that they're usually pretty busy in the evenings, and throughout the day on the weekends. Highlyyyy recommend calling in for a reservation either while you're shopping or just in advance as the wait can sometimes be long. That being said, the service is always superb, the staff are always very nice! Food is always great, the fish is always amazing, otherwise I love their caesar salad as well! Portion sizes are usually big, but the sides are amazing as well! The french fries are a great option for the table. This is something small, but the staff are VERY knowledgeable about the menu which is so nice because with people having different things they can and can't eat, it just makes it super easy!! Also their carrot cake is to DIEEEEE for!

Max R.

Yelp
Went with my girlfriend with our one year and was amazing! Our server Benjamin was super kind and helpful and we will definitely be back for more amazing food!

Yelp
Chain restaurant in metro Detroit area. Large restaurant from a seating capacity perspective with a huge oval shaped bar just to the left of the entry. Not sure what was going on a mid-week day but the bar was packed with every seat taken. The restaurant itself was dimly lite and provided a nice ambiance. We were seated quickly and because my partner was familiar with the menu she quickly ordered the calamari appetizer and suggested a few others but we decided to only ofer the one. The menu itself covered a lot of faire - various seafood, steak, chicken, salad and sandwich options with suggested sides. I ordered the pecan crushed trout which came with cole slaw and my partner ordered swordfish and substituted broccoli and added loaded mashed potatoes to her dish. Both dishes were good but I could have used a bit more seasoning to add some additional flavor. I was told that the chocolate cake and ice cream was really good so we ordered it and it met all expectations, moist and delicious. It was large enough for us to share. Lastly, our server was really cool and before leaving gifted us a slice of carrot cake, that being my favorite !

Yelp
Just there for appetizers and my gray goose martini with my favorite blue cheese stuffed olives, my girlfriend with me had a bourbon. Either was a great combination with this appetizer . I just want to say that we sat at the bar and this appetizer that's on a specialty list was absolutely delicious. It was l avocado on top w/ ginger .. it was stuff with crab meat and tuna, and these two specialty sauces I couldn't even tell you what they were but they were absolutely delicious highly recommended

Yelp
Another great meal at J Alexander's. Service was exceptional as always and I had the Thai Kai Salad without chicken. Delicious! The peanut dressing was incredible and tasted better than peanut satay sauce at authentic thai restaurants! It was tossed in a cilantro vinaigrette that really complimented the rest of the ingredients. I will be ordering this again. Yum!
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
Do not try and come here with a party larger than 4. Service is honestly awful. If you actually ever get a table.
google avatar

Larry O.

Yelp
This is legit my all time favorite restaurant! J Alexander's does not miss, EVER!!!! There Caesar salad is always my favorite thing to get with a ton of black pepper. The spinach quest dip is incredible and so is the emerald cost shrimp. The steak Maui as well is legit one of the best steak preparations I've had in a long time. Their cocktails are very good as well, I always get a pear martini though. I never leave here wanting anything more but another reservation for another date. Great job!!!!!
google avatar

Stan D.

Yelp
The food was so good here. The service was wonderful. Our server was so wonderful and polite.

Jozlyn R.

Yelp
The food and drinks are really good. However, multiple bartenders were extremely rude... not friendly nor professional...majority of the females. I will NOT be returning back to this location

Natalie W.

Yelp
Service was fantastic. Our waiter was very accommodating. The oven roasted chicken was to die for!!! I ate that thang right up!!

Austin G.

Yelp
Food was insanely disgusting they didn't have the prime rib and smoked salmon dip that's the only reason I got off my boat to come here. I used to come when I was a kid with my dad. I wanted to taste the same thing but they didnt have nothing!
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
This is a family favorite but this location isn't as great as it used to be. The food and drinks were absolutely delicious and our server was outstanding. But they sat my family in a very high traffic area, right next to the open kitchen so it was super warm and had people walking by us constantly. My salad was amazing though.
google avatar

Fran P.

Yelp
Went to eat on a Friday around 5:30 and got seated right away. The waitress was excellent. She was very attentive and kept our glasses full without having to ask for a refill. We ordered the fried shrimp for the appetizer with all of the sauces on the side. For the entree we had crab cakes, Mac and cheese, and broccoli...ribeye steak and mashed potatoes. The crab cakes were full of crab and so delicious. The ribeye was the star of the show!! Seasoned well and was tender. The sides were good too. Everything reheated well the next day. Best of all we were in and out in an hour.
google avatar

Latoya H.

Yelp
Had dinner with friends on a Wednesday evening, so it wasn't that crowed. We sat right away. Service was good. Waitress regularly checked on us. I ordered the Steak Maui and fries. The fries were crispy but a little thin. The steak was AMAZING. One of the best ribeyes I've ever had. It had a beautiful char and great flavor. It was cooked to perfection. Doubt that i would get anything but the steak on all future visits. Also order the Cesar salad with shrimp. I appreciate that they did not skimp on the shrimp lol. The cocktail was great. Excellent service, food and vibe. Looking forward to my next visit.

Isla S.

Yelp
Do not go on Sundays: lousy, lukewarm food with half-listening waiters who just want to get the job done with each customer
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Had the caesar salad with fries, an incredible combo. The service was amazing as it always is here!

Christi M.

Yelp
Ordered the rotisserie chicken I believe it's called and it was flavorless mashed potatoes were good broccoli was ehh not worth it. Menu didn't have a lot of options.

Janice L.

Yelp
They were INCREDIBLY rude and frankly quite racist. The server took FOREVER to take my order and instead took other tables orders that came way after me. Then when I did order, the server gave me nothing but attitude and when they walked away, made a comment and how they can't stand black people and how their always in the way. And I endured all that for some lousy food that wasn't even cooked all the way. So I will NOT be coming here ever again.
google avatar

Shawn S.

Yelp
4 stars because of service. The entree pictured was sent back. I originally asked for medium well and this was the outcome. Ryan is hands down thee best waiter/bartender! I didn't even get a chance to finish my complaint before my plate was in his hands. He agreed my order was incorrect. Sit at the bar and let him take care of you! He made my night while waiting for my corrected order although it was now served WELL Done and wrong side given (french fries), I honestly didn't feel like complaining about it again and I must admit had it not been for some amazing rosè wine - I probably would've asked for a manager.
google avatar

Jillian S.

Yelp
Came here with 4 people and 2 of us are vegan. Unfortunately they were NOT able to accommodate which is just wild in today's day.I was offered broccoli, like c'mon who wants a side of broccoli....how can you not have ANY vegan options. And for the chef not to accommodate is just crazy to me. Being vegan is not foreign. One vegan got a salad and it was TERRIBLE as there was NOTHING on it. So disappointing. Also the restaurant was NOT busy at all like you all couldn't try. I also asked for artichokes vegan and they brought them drenched in butter. The service was also not good....just overall a bad experience and a waste of a lunch outing very unenjoyable.
google avatar

Yolanda L.

Yelp
Food was deeeeelish never disappointed service was awesome this location is the best for meee and the ambiance is very subtle and intimate
google avatar

Bedria P.

Yelp
The calamari was flavorful and came out hot! The deviled eggs were good but the bacon was good but a little too crunchy. Cajun Grilled Artic Char was finally back as a special and was amazing. Moist fish with amazing grilled flavors. Haricots Verts w/ were delicious anThe fish came with a mound of red skin mash and some tomatoes. Initially I liked everything but the tomatoes. I didn't expect them to be cold. Thought they would've been better grilled but tasted it with the fish and it was better. I usually order a Gin and Tonic so I don't like really sweet drinks. I saw a pretty drink and thought I would give it a try. Ordered the Prickly Pear which comes with an additional serving on the side. This drink was sooooo good. The pour was so perfect that I ordered another. Great ambience. 4 stars because this location rarely answers the phone and servers could be a little more attentive. Overall good experience, will return for more.

Dominic F.

Yelp
By far the best J. Alexander's in Michigan! I've been to about 3 locations and this one outperforms the others every single time! It's always packed but somehow the service is always great and efficient. Food always comes out fresh and delicious and is always amazing! Must get the Hyde Park or the Wagyu Burger!
google avatar

Gracie D.

Yelp
Too expensive for what it is. Got a New York strip. Steak had a line of fat/gristle through it. Potatoes were ice cold. They replaced them with ones that they nuked in the microwave. When McDonald's cooks fresh fries, the don't nuke 'em. Waitress disappeared for long periods of time and she didn't have that many tables, there were quite a few empties Bartender was rude and slow. Not with the money. It's like Applebees level food with Taco Bell at 2 AM service.
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
Our waiter made our experience amazing. Very knowledgeable of the menu. The crab cakes and avocado bomb was our favorite.

Lori L.

Yelp
We ended up here for our family dinner tonight and it was absolutely perfect! A bit pricey, but completely worth it. The atmosphere, service, and every single meal ordered was above our expectations. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Ailun H.

Yelp
Overall, the food is alright. It is pretty $$$ but they give you large portions. My friends and I were all extremely full and had quite a bit of leftovers. We got the spinach queso and today's appetizer special, fried shrimp with two yummy sauces. I think the apps here are definitely worth it. The spinach queso is extremely delicious and super filling with the chips. It made me not hungry for my entree haha. The fried shrimp and the dipping sauces was a nice crunch and touch. I got the rotisserie chicken for my entree and I personally didn't enjoy it that much because it was pretty dry. I liked that I got a dipping broth to enhance the flavor, but overall not too impressed. The smashed potatoes side was just aight. It was pretty rock solid and bland. Waiter wasn't super attentive to us - the restaurant was also pretty busy - so we were given something we didn't order and had it returned. However, we were still charged for it so he ended us giving us a dessert on the house. We got the carrot cake which was quite tasty but we were much too full. It is expensive, but they give large portions. I just would not recommend the rotisserie chicken entree here.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Service is out of this world. They went above and beyond to make my experience exceptional. I highly recommend the steak burger, and the fries are a must! My server Sharday was attentive and friendly. Overall amazing place to dine!!
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
Such a nice cozy restaurant in the mall. Service was excellent, food was tasty, nice atmosphere, and the hostess was very nice. No issues, I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
Tuscan steak was amazing! Service was excellent! Mojito and margaritas were top notch.
google avatar

Andrew Y.

Yelp
Somerset Mall is just a classy place and J Alexanders shares in that refined look with deep brown wood paneling, fancy lighting, etc. Steak and fries were on point. Food and service were outstanding and frankly surprised to see such a low review for a place this seemed to be hitting all the right notes for a well deserved five stars.

Lauren J.

Yelp
Amazing ambience food service is always a ten I come! Cindy's Martini lemon drop is my favorite. My husband favorite is the top shelf margarita and of course we always have to start off with the appetizer of calamari and the J Alex dip.
