Ventured out in snowy Raleigh to the comforting German restaurant, J Betski's. Everyone that works here is incredibly nice and welcoming. Food was ordered with a bar code on your phone, and the service was incredibly fast.
We started with the mushroom pierogies, which were incredible! The dough was chewy and crisp on the outside, and the filling was rich, cheesy, and umami. We also shared the cabbage and cauliflower salad which had delicious pickled cauliflower and onions, and the toasted pine nuts on top added a nice nutty flavor and crunch. My husband had the venison goulash meatballs - the goulash was very flavorful with warming spices and a hint of spiciness, and the meatball was very tender. I had the chicken stew, which was very rich, buttery, and herbaceous. The only issue we had with our entrees is that they weren't hot, which would have elevated the great flavor they had. We ended our meal with their soft pretzel and braised cabbage wedge. We missed the big salt crystals on the soft pretzel, but the side of mustard it came with was superb. The cabbage wedge was deliciously braised in beef stock and balsamic - very flavorful and tender.
Overall this was a hearty, warm meal, perfect for a snowy night. The service was delightful and fast. The only issue was the entrees being room temperature, but all the food was very flavorful and well-priced. We will be back!
