J. Bookwalter Tasting Studio Review - Woodinville - Seattle - The Infatuation

"J. Bookwalter is a corner spot on NE 145th that’s always the perfect kind of crowded on a warm day. And despite the parking lot views, they have a terrific outdoor space, complete with firepits, patio sofas, a windmill, and barrels. (It’s truly not a winery unless there are barrels everywhere.) We like coming here with a group when there’s a reason to celebrate, which means it’s acceptable to use this as an excuse to do some tastings and celebrate wine being a generally great liquid." - Aimee Rizzo

We have been members here for many years, but have never been out here to the flagship tasting room. The staff was very welcome and knowledgeable. It was a nice relaxing environment.

A must visit! Outstanding wine and phenomenal service! My boyfriend visited the winery last year and shipped a bottle home for us to share. Due to a number of issues, the bottle was shipped, returned, destination revised, and shipped again but this time to DC! Huge shout out to Mitch for his patience with us. Roughly 8 months later, we finally opened the bottle for an at home steak dinner. Conflict 2021 was decedent to say the least - smooth rich berries with a bit of sweetness. Such a treat! Thank you! I will be telling the boyfriend to buy another bottle next time he visits... but this time to carry it home in his luggage. LOL.

We visited on Saturday during Memorial Day weekend. The tasting room is pet friendly and family friendly! The wine was great and the staff were amazing. They were very knowledgeable about the wines and provided excellent service. They even brought a water bowl for our pup. We had a great time and highly recommend this winery.

This review is strictly for the tasting room. We visited on a weekend where we had made reservations for 8 people. When we arrived it was clear they double booked because our original reservation for the private room was replaced with them frantically placing tables together in the back room. I had my 3 month old baby with me and needed to just warm up his milk. I asked only for a hot cup of water and was met with snark and attitude. The man stated, “we don’t do water for formula and we don’t have a changing table”. Going to a winery I don’t expect them to have a changing table and I hadn’t even asked about it. I didn’t say what the water was for and he unkindly assumed. I ended up walking to the restaurant in 30 degree weather with my baby to see if they could accommodate my request for just hot water and they did so without batting an eye. We ordered a charcuterie board (small for the price) and halfway through enjoying it, this same employee said, “if you could finish this sooner than later, that would be great. We need the board”. We did finish it but he then didn’t come back for the board for another 15 minutes. Overall a very poor experience considering my aunt and uncle (who were with us) have been members here for years. I certainly hope this employee will see this review and take these comments to heart.

Had a wonderful experience at this tasting room. Ryan was exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful in guiding us through the flights. The wines were each well made. The room and grounds are very inviting.

GREAT FOOD AND ATMOSPHERE. Came here for lunch and ordered different appetizers, and was very impressed with the service and the food. The winery has indoor and outdoor seating, and was not crowded at all. Everything is clean and spaced out so you can enjoy your own space. Kudos to the crew running the place, too. The host was quick to greet and seat us, the waitress was quick to get our order in and kept our drinks topped off, and we never had to ask for assistance. DEFINITELY will be back, and will recommend this place to family and friends. MY FOOD REVIEW: The Pork Belly Tacos are delicious. There’s only 3 and they could be the perfect portion for a single person. The Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza was the best plate we ordered. The crust is thin and perfect, and the topping are super fresh. Fantastic flavor. The Wagyu Beef Carpaccio was very… different. It’s a small dish of wagyu beef strips marinating in an EXTREMELY flavorful sauce. It’s not enough portion for a meal, but definitely a good add-on if you’d like some amazing flavor with your dinner.

Treated like Royalty here. First, the wine tasting experience was so pleasant. The wine was good, the atmosphere was calm, but not pretentious, and the staff were all genuinely (or at least it sure seemed that way) enjoying their jobs. Dinner starts at 4:00, our wine tasting ended at about 3:45... so we stayed for dinner. But first appetizers. The best bacon wrapped dates, seriously.. order them! Also ordered the shrimp/cream sauce (don't remember the name) which was also perfect. Now dinner- I had the "Pasta of the Moment". Salmon, capers, cream sauce, homemade spaghetti noodles... Melt in your mouth, and oh so good! My wife had a salad, and we added the Kobe beef. Slightest of seasoning (like what you'd get from cooking in a seasoned cast iron skillet), and the exact right degree of rare. After dinner our waitress (McKenzie, and she was perfect too) told us about the Chai cheese cake with espresso whip cream. Yup, ordered it! McKenzie made some fresh and fantastic coffee to go with it .. and it capped off the experience perfectly! The patio is beautiful and spacious, the view is great, and the entirety of the experience hit the mark 100%. We will definitely be back! You need to go here, you need to try it.. truly one of my favorite dining experiences of the last 5 years.

Google
Food was great, service appeared to be great. When it came to check out. they did not print out a receipt and just told me the amount and did not bring a receipt and never sent a receipt. I look at the charges and it is not adding up. The charge was charged to the account the day after as well, not sure how that happens.

Yelp
My husband and I have eaten at Bookwalter a number of times . The main dishes and wine selections have been consistently excellent. The servers have been knowledgeable, and prepared with recommendations when asked . Finally, we enjoyed the atmosphere-an inviting blend of cozy and upscale.

Yelp
A+ for friendly staff and Ambiance. We chose the patio both visits. First visit as a 5 star rating. We indulged on the duck and halibut and a sauvignon blanc bottle. We had the avocado fries too. All great except the fries were over-hyped. Buying a bottle is the same cost as two glasses so a deal. The second visit we sat by the fire table and it was beautiful. Our waiter was friendly but not as attentive as our first. We just had the scallops, Caesar salad and a chicken/ artichoke pizza with the Chardonnay. The pizza lacked flavor. Not enough artichokes to taste. The crusts are awesome but Would not order again. The salads were a big disappointment esp at $9. Not enough dressing, or croutons. Waiter did not offer pepper or cheese. Hard to call it a caesar. Scallops were delicious though but only 3? For $19 I would have expected at minimum 4. Chardonnay was light and buttery. So the first visit is a 5 and second is a 3.5. average ie is a 4. the reviews on here are pretty accurate. We would dine here again when we want something special other than a pizza for example. Get the halibut or duck!

Yelp
Great wine and good service. My wife and I are from CA and we visited the tasting room over Thanksgiving. The room was closed because they were putting up decorations for Christmas. We spoke to them and they opened the room for us to do a tasting. They were very knowledgeable about the wine and what would go well with our Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. I highly recommend stopping by if you're looking for an E. Washington wine.

Yelp
Wine is obviously good. The food is just as good. I love the membership options and keep coming back. Bacon wrapped dates avocado fries wagu burger turkey sandwich steaks full service bar this place is great.

Yelp
What a great wine tasting room! I love this place! Too bad it was so windy outside. They have a huge fire table that was at least 12 ft long. Got to try that the next time we stop in. Service was okay, the server was not very knowledgeable and didn't add to the experience. The room and the wine definitely made up for the that. I was with family and we did not leave empty handed. Can't wait to come back when the weather cooperates for a wonderful outdoor experience.

Yelp

The food is great, service good, environment is great! Good for groups! I always look forward to going back.

Yelp
While my husband and I were here, we actually had the pleasure of meeting the owner. She was amazing and we enjoyed talking to her! She was actually there having a drink and we had a drink with her and spoke about a lot of different things. She recommended some wines and other drinks to us as well. The drinks are strong and good (if you're not getting wine), but plenty of wine as well. Food was great! A bit pricey. But very good. Beautiful set up as well.
google avatar

Rebecca Q.

Yelp
Went here for a wine tasting and had a good experience. Had a delicious elaborate charcuterie board but had some issues with food preparation for a nut allergy. High quality wines and polite staff.
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
I've only been here once and sat on the patio. The service was great. The wine was good... I had the rose. I ordered the butter chicken... interesting take on a classic Indian dish. The chicken was fried, the sauce was thick, definitely not a curry, and it came with wild rice not basmati. I thought it was delicious, but just wanted to point out some key differences. The avocado fries were good, but I probably won't order those again.... I like my avocado raw not cooked. The fried cauliflower teriyaki wings were delicious and I would definitely order that again.
google avatar

Yelp
We visit This restaurant every time we are in town. They change their menu pretty regularly and it is consistently good! This recent time we ordered the bruschetta which had a ton of great flavor. Instead of individual pieces you typically see with Bruschetta this is a slice from a loaf. We also ordered the blistered tomato pizza and added on the pepperoni. This was delicious! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Heidi M.

Yelp
We came in for lunch with our dog and had an excellent dinning experience. We sat on the patio under umbrella and it wasn't too hot! The burrata cheese appetizer was outstanding! Looking forward to coming back and having this again! I highly recommend The steelhead salad it was great. My husband had the tacos and they were OK. They were like a beef for heaters special the tortilla was really dry, I personally didn't care for them. We had a bottle of their Rose, which we thoroughly enjoyed and paired great with cheese app and salad. We did wine tasting as well, which was fun. Lots of parking out front. Friendly staff and patrons. Clean bathrooms.

Yelp
Fiction is a restaurant that makes me sad we don't live in the Tri Cities. Came here for a baby shower and it was so so good. We were seated at the big table in front of the kitchen and had prompt service from our staff. Drinks were amazing and all the appetizers we ordered were perfection. (Bacon wrapped dates, avocado fries, and the Burrata). For lunch I had the Columbia River Steelhead Salad. The amount of spice, crust, and zing were just spot on. There was a lot going on, but each piece played so well off of each other. I have a bachelorette party in the tri cities this summer and plan on convincing the other gals to make a reservation there so I can try the rest of the menu!
google avatar

Tami F.

Yelp
We have been coming here for years and are also wine club members. The location and grounds are gorgeous. The menu is imaginative, especially for the Tri-Cities. Service is always good. However, over the last couple of years, we have noticed a decrement in the quality of the food, particularly the mains and deserts. Celebrated our anniversary here last night and were again underwhelmed. Ordered Patagonia prawn pasta, which contained only four small shrimp sized pieces. At $34, this seemed a bit steep for what you got protein wise. The same criticism of the salad we shared... At $8... was maybe a cup of actual veggies. My husband, Wygu beef burger was, as always, excellent and worth the $. Dessert had a bit of refrigerator taste to it. We will continue to patronize this place, but think we're going to skip main courses for now and stick with appetizers with a bottle of wine.
google avatar

Ciara W.

Yelp
Was referred to this restaurant by one of the wineries we went to the other day. They highly recommend Fiction. Their food definitely did not disappoint. The customer service was also wonderful. We loved the charcuterie board and bacon wrapped dates. There was so much flavor in the dates! My taste buds were very happy. The wagyu double burger was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing too. I asked for some garlic aioli to go with the fries and i liked it much better than ketchup. I would come back here the next time I am in town to visit, for sure! Would love to try more of what is on the menu next time.
google avatar

Leann S.

Yelp
Very attentive but non invasive waitress. She gave great descriptions of various items on menu. Restaurant focuses on local fresh ingredients and menu changes frequently. Curry chicken was crispy and had a nice sauce level. Pizza had great crust and generous toppings. Pasta is house made. All dishes were great and we all tried each dish. Room was gorgeous and large I believe they called it the barrel room and it would be great for large parties. Great place for a special night out.
google avatar

Tyler B.

Yelp
Excellent spot to meet work colleagues. Pre-dinner gin cocktails were excellent! Steelhead salad (two of us ordered) and the Italian pizza and wedge salad were all very good! We were seated in the barrel tasting room which was a cool spot and had a fun working business dinner. Our server Chris was attentive and guided us through the wines and dinner entree's nicely! We had the Protagonist wine which was excellent! Go give it a try!!

Yelp
This is my second time here at J Bookwalter Winery. My friends highly recommended coming here, and I figured since I was in the area for business, why not?! My main draw here (besides the wine) was that my friends bragged about the donuts. Well... they only serve those during the weekends (womp! womp!). I was visiting Kennewick on the weekdays. :( During my first visit in September 2018 I sat at the bar and just missed happy hour. I enjoyed the wine and it's cool they named all the wines relating to books (so far my favorite so far is 2014 Suspense, a Merlot and Cab Franc blend). Just a note, during HH the glasses of wine are half off, and that's a bargain considering most pours start around $10 and go up as high as $42. As for food, I had the breast of duck in September and really enjoyed it. This time around I ordered the same thing. The accompaniments were different both times, but it was done deliciously well. Last night the duck was served with brussel sprouts and bacon, and very savory! I also had the soup du jour, halibut chowder, and it really hit the spot! Service was good, not fantastic, but that's ok, I was enjoying sipping my generous pours. One day, some day, I will have those donuts...

Anne C.

Yelp
The new tasting room is awesome! Pourers we're very knowledgeable and friendly. Wine was great!
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
Best outdoor patio in TriCities...until the summer hits. Then it's arguably whoever has the misters in the 100% heat Great HH ~ 25% off pizza & select appetizers. Wine ~ better than average, a little pricey. Flights are generous pours. Service ~ hit & miss. Most recent visit EXCELLENT with Logan.
google avatar

Aileen K.

Yelp
I got the smoked gouda burger (with the soup) and mushroom melt (with salad). I also tried the rosé. I loved the melt and would probably get that again with a drink next time. The accompanying salad had fruity yet light dressing-and just the right amount (not too much). Service was also great! Carly tended to all our needs and regularly checked up on us. She was the perfect cherry on top of a great meal.
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
Dinner and wine were both very good. I ordered the gouda burger with french onion soup. The burger was excellently prepared and the soup was light and flavorful. The only downside was that they served the soup on the same plate as the burger and spilt some bringing it to the table. The bun was significantly more flavorful, but slightly soggy.
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
The atmosphere is great, the service is on point, and the wine is fantastic. This is what keeps me coming back. Truth be told however, the steak specifically has room for improvement. if the intent to gain a Michelin is accurate, id venture to say attention to this is critical.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
I thought it was just a place to get good wine. Great pizza. Like really good. Try the pepperoni
google avatar

Maggie Y.

Yelp
Love this place! Came here for happy hour! Special price apps, 1/2 prices wine pours and 25% off on pizzas étaient 3-6pm! Wish it applied to wine flights too so I could try more than one types. They have a Great selections of wine! Delicious avocado fries, always wanted to try it! Their pizza was soooo good as was the wagyu sliders! Can't wait to try out their other wines!
google avatar

Chuck H.

Yelp
A great local winery with an excellent restaurant. Beautiful new tasting rooms. Outstanding food and wine
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant and winery. The food here is exceptional and the wine is delightful. Great place for the summer as well because they have outdoor seating. Service was a little on the slow side for food but not too bad. They did charge for a side of aioli which I thought was really odd for an upscale winery. Their lunch menu has many great sandwiches to choose from. I would highly recommend the fried chicken sandwich! I hope to come back here! Though I am giving 4 stars for charging me for aioli and the atmosphere in the restaurant could be a little more lively especially in the winter which I am sure they would benefit from. The music and crowd could also be more elevated to a younger crowd as well.

Laurie F.

Yelp
Wine options are nice. New tasting room has a fantastic staff and excellent service. Fiction Restaurant is pricing me out of the market. Food is very good and service is excellent, but I am a local and many local wineries are pricing me out of the market. I love wine and nice dining - but paying $80+ for a solo meal/wine is just more than my budget can allow.
google avatar

Mattison S.

Yelp
First and foremost- their wines are fantastic, and I highly recommend visiting for a tasting. And, if you're seeking an exceptional dining experience, by all means you must have lunch or dinner here! Decadent flatbreads, some of the best duck I've ever had and seasonal specials... this place is one of our favs!

Tyler J.

Yelp
This is one of the best places in town for a date night! My wife and I LOVE dining here. There hasn't been a bad meal. We have always had excellent service from staff. They are the first place we recommend to friends and family when they ask us where to go for a good night out. HANDS DOWN the best restaurant in the Tri (as far as we have seen).

Hal B.

Yelp
Wonderful ambiance, great food, patio dining lovely, great service, peaceful place! I
google avatar

Charlene G.

Yelp
This actually is one of my favorite restaurants in Tricities. Their food is usually very good. They are pretty pricey on their menu items, bower pretty typical for most wineries in the area. Service is polite and attentive. It is a good idea to get a reservation at peak times or you may not get a table. Their wines are okay, not my favorite, but the food usually makes up for it. Yesterday the food wasn't as good, but I'm not sure why. I had the steelhead arugula salad and the flavor was "off" and the tomato over cooked. My friend's halibut was very small proportioned considering the cost of the dish. That said I will go again and hope it is back to its normal excellence.
google avatar

Axel B.

Yelp
Great restaurant in Kennewick in a nice out of the way setting. Food is fantastic and there is a tasting room that I think your advised to make an appointment with ahead of time. Probably my favorite place to eat in the Tri-Cities area.
google avatar

Attila H.

Yelp
Went for happy hour drink/food and I'm glad I did. Sat at the bar for quick service like I always do, I saw the bartender 3 times in 45 mins while I was there. $18 for 6oz of their red blend is a bit overpriced but half off is much more reasonable during happy hour. Pork sliders were pretty good. The reason for the 2 stars is the " 4% cost of living surcharge". I'm getting tired of restaurant adding mandatory tips and/or surcharges to the final bill just because they don't want to pay more to their employees and they expect the customers to pay the difference. This place is already overpriced on food and wine, I really don't understand why I have to chip in for the employees.
google avatar

Callie H.

Yelp
Wonderful service, pet friendly patio with beautiful grounds. Great food. Will be back!
google avatar

Luzcel T.

Yelp
One of the better brunch places in the TriCities. It may be a little pricier than others but you get not only a tasty meal but also a cozy ambience. Their menu changes every so often so be surprised with what they have to offer when you visit. I was a little bit more adventurous than the rest of the group and tried their curried fried chicken with French toast. It was actually a good combination, sweet and salty. A twist on the southern fried chicken and waffles.
google avatar

Jackie B.

Yelp
The restaurant vibe was high energy, the food was good, our waiter was in training so our drinks keep being forgotten and my pasta dish wasn't hot. Our reservations where late 7:30pm close to their closing. Overall good customer service.
google avatar

Camilla J.

Yelp
Love the food and the wine her. My favorite in the area for sure! I had some really good Chardonnay here, service is prompt and correct. There always seems to be a lot of guests, so the atmosphere is happening but it still doesn't seem crowded. Date night, friends hang out or business meeting , I really think this place fits for all!
google avatar

Reetu P.

Yelp
Stopped by here during our wine tasting and they surely have some delish wines for all those winos. They don't let you taste outdoors even though their outside seating is gorgeous especially in a nice sunny day. This venue is surrounded by vineyards which makes it beautiful. Got here during brunch and their lunch menu didn't open till later that afternoon. We weren't that hungry but my little one wanted to munch on something so we got some donuts. Their donuts are absolutely finger licking. Within second it was gone. These yummy sugar donuts did great for our pallets as we tasted our flight in red and white wine. They have a gray variety of red and whites. Closer to lunch we ordered pizza as we needed some carbs to absorb our wine :). Great variety of food on their menu for all age groups and dietary requirements. If you coming for food in large group make reservations as they get busy. We were here for 5 hours!!! I know but they have a large variety of wine which is SO good that it took some time. We left here as members !!!! Highly Recommend this place and it's great for families.
google avatar

D J.

Yelp
LOVE this place! Our first visit was not stellar, but my husband and I believe they've worked out whatever was the issue and they're now humming along like a well tuned machine. We gave this restaurant another try when our friends invited us out and it was spectacular. If you see the braised short ribs on their menu and are a red meat fan, please give it a try! My husband and I both ordered it and it was one of the best meals we've had in a long time. Also, if you're lucky enough to be able to sit at the bar with with Paul Samson, you'll be able to get expertly crafted cocktails. He is definitely one of the best mixologists we've had. Paul is an excellent conversationalist to make you feel welcome, and also a pleasure to watch as he carefully assembles a cocktail especially for you. We'll be back, again and again and again!
google avatar

Kelli Y.

Yelp
Always great wine, good food, and a beautiful location. We make sure to hit this spot as we travel to or from our home in Boise.
google avatar

Damian S.

Yelp
My husband took me for Sunday brunch for my birthday. Please stop sitting people at a small two person table you would find at a coffee shop. This is what they managed to do with us. There were two couple party tables all around us sitting at a table for four. We had the only two person table. Absolutely no room! All other tables had a center piece, but us. It looked like they through this table in out of the blue. The food was ok. The waiter was awesome. One thing I hate is to see people cleaning tables swinging a wet rag around, flinging food onto the floor while other people are eating and attaching to a belt when done. This is why I only gave it a three.
google avatar

Lorena H.

Yelp
Food was excellent. I ordered 5 mushroom stroganoff and it was out of this world. The service was excellent.
google avatar

Travis J.

Yelp
Tried out the new tasting room. $25 tasting felt pretty steep for the 5 very small pours & minimal extras with relatively spendy bottles. I'll be back to try the main restaurant someday, but will probably stick to other places for tastings.

D G.

Yelp
So awesome to have the old menu back! Love the pizza and salad and all the people. Thanks for bringing back the favorites. We haven't been here for over a month after coming every week throughout covid. So happy to be back. Missed all the great people the most.

Melissa N.

Yelp
I went here for my birthday and had a really good time. Ordered a bottle of Double Plot Chardonnay. I highly recommend that wine. We also got their charcuterie board and it was amazing. For my entrée I got their waygu steak. It was delicious. I will definitely be coming again. Service was great too. Prices are a bit high but not at all surprising for what you get.

L G.

Yelp
Fiction restaurant is a hidden gem! The food is excellent with different and unusual takes on familiar foods. The chef makes vegetables fun again. Avocado fries??? Really? Amazing! The wine from the neighboring J Bookwalter winery is superb. Can't beat the ambience either. I highly recommend stopping in for a quick bite, a full blown meal or even a romantic dinner.
google avatar

Michele G.

Yelp
Second time visitor. We ordered their Rose' and avocado fries. Both were delicious and would order again.
