Best Bratwurst Sausages in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Around since 1972, this Southwest Suburban butcher is located about 40 minutes away from Downtown Chicago. Try the pizza brat, stuffed with mozzarella and peppers for an Italian spin on a German classic." - Ashok Selvam

My family and I have been going here for our meat every week for a long time now. Everything is great! We order custom 1 5/8”thick steaks and they have no problem doing it on the spot. Double baked potatoes are pricey, but awesome. Final note, the best Polish sausage around, especially the already prepared Polish and kraut on the weekends! Buttery sauerkraut and garlicky sausage!

Google
This place is great! Have stopped in on my way home from work a few times and the meat is high quality, the people are always great. Highly recommend if you are passing by or live near the area!

Google
My daughter wanted to try a hot pot restaurant, so we decide on this place, staff was very nice our server Maria was awesome and very patient for our first visit, and the food was pretty good. I enjoyed the short ribs and steak & several other items. I like that it’s all you can eat. The picture guys was also nice took a beautiful photo of my daughter and I. Life is great always making memories

Google
Meats are pretty good, nothing top tier quality, but all good stuff. Staff on meat side is great. Deli side is different. Deli meats from here don't last long so eat it fast, they are often out of salads but that's ok, the worst is the Deli side staff. They are rude and huff when they have to take care of you, the guy was the worst but haven't seen him in a while, the ladies all get made when it's the last hour of the store being open and you actually want something and they have to unwrap it. Again the guys on the meat side are all helpful and friendly.

Google
Good old fashioned butcher shop. Good selection of fresh meats and specialty items that they make. Hot food also to go. They have a little bit of everything here. I was stuck with a crabby lady behind the counter. I got through it.

Google
It was like going into the past when I went into the butcher shop. Everything was so fresh, and I was able to find out that they sell mixed meats for dog food as well. My dog loved it, and we loved the steaks I had bought

Google
Great little mom & pop Irish butchershop. They have some imported products from Ireland in the store. On the side by the registers, there is Irish soda bread by the wall. In the back, there are 2 deli counters. 1 you need a number ticket for (grab in front , when walking in), that is for the butcher deli station. The other counter across from the meats section, is the deli for sliced meats, cheeses, various homemade salads & hotdogs. Their prices may be slightly higher than some, but you get what you pay for, which is quality meats & other products. Their frozen fries in the back freezer by the deli are very near to McDonald's fries. The front counter staff when you check out, are always nice & friendly. All in all, its very good local butcher shop, which is already rare to come across.

Google
The quality of the meats is mirrored by the service of the people that work there. They treat you like family. Best shop I've ever had the pleasure of doing business with.

Yelp
I asked for a 2 lb beef top sirloin roast so I could make braciole. They didn't have it on display, but went into the back and cut it fresh for me. The meat quality was excellent and the end result braciole was great because of it. I also got some seafood salad and 3 bean salad for lunch - and they had a plastic fork for me. They also stock diet Green River liters. Only thing that would make it better is if they had a dedicated lunch counter where they assembled and served sandwiches from all of the goods they sell. They'd make a killing. Alas, they're not licensed as a restaurant and the space only has so much room, so you have to go home and make your own lunch. But I can tell you, from the selection of pre-cooked ready to re-heat items that's not hard to do - just wish I could do it during a work day. The pre-cooked buffalo and bbq chicken wings were huge and delicious. With so few true butchers left in the Chicago metro area, this place is family-run gem.

Yelp
Really good to see that there are still small business butcher shops like Jack and Pat still around to serve us good quality meat for honest prices compared to large chain markets. I was passing thru the area and stopped a large butcher - Deli sign and decided to check this place out. There is a fairly medium size private lot to park. Once inside you are blasted with a lot of info such as local newspaper for $1 and there is a red ticket dispenser, if you are new like I was, you will miss it like I did. Grab a number and that puts you inline to be served. I was able to buy a couple of pounds of porter house burgers (seems like a very popular item) and center cut bone-in pork chops (thick). The items was nicely wrapped in paper and bagged and a large paper wrapper to secure. My meat was nicely wrapped for transport. Highly recommend to explore and buy here and I will try the different potato salads they have to offer.

Yelp
Family run business that's been around for decades. A solid place to shop. Staff is always top notch, helpful, and polite.

Yelp
We bought four bone in rib-eye steaks for a birthday grill, a link of fresh polish potato salad and two smoked polish links plus more. The steaks were hand cut to our thickness and are beauties. Everything else was fine but my only disappointment was that the smoked Polish links were the kind sold at hot dog stands in a bun, not the authentic "have as a meal" type Overall we would highly recommend them as a fine butcher shop and a serviceable deli.

Yelp
What a great classic butcher!! 1st time inside after passing by for over 45 years, and don't know why I have not stopped in until now. Got some ribeyes that were to die for. Also some Porterhouse Bergers which were also excellent. Can't wait to try the marinated chicken, kabobs, and pork chops.

Yelp
Pardon my bad typing, i can't see what i type until its posted.me Jack & Pat's is an experience everyone should try.It starts when I go in the doors. Everything in there takes me back to a a more peaceful time. First you get hit with the smell, it's enticing, it's like going back in time. The smell is not 1 thing it's a harmony of things. Cooked food, boxes, . For many years i only went for 3 things, the pizza kits, the cooked stew meal and most of all the Italianbeef. Then my last bday my daughterandson in law boughtus the steaks. Wow, they were cut exactlyhow i like them, fresh meat. Iwe cookedthem on the grill. Definitelythe best steaksi ever ate! Supertender. The marblingwasgreat. No seasong is how i like my steaks. Best of all the pricesare competitiveif not less then stores. This food is far superiortoany storemeat. I do get sausagefromtimetotime. Definitelygivethis store a visit. As for servicethey are great , they are helpfulandpolite. . I g

Yelp
If I want quality meat for cookouts, I go to Jack & Pat's, of course. Not only do they have a widely varied selection of meats (of amazing quality, mind you, especially their sausages and burgers) and other little items, the service is outstanding, everyone there is very friendly. The ambiance is probably the best part, that quaint though rugged ma/pa shop feel drags me back every time.

Yelp
The name of this place accurately reflects the business ... and in such a good way. We have been to a few places - one notably in Calumet City - that claim to be old fashioned and that try to relive the old days, but most fail. Jack and Pat's tries and succeeds. This place is a third-generation affair. The store is structured as an old butcher shop that has expanded somewhat to include a number of other items you may want to purchase with your meat selections - such as onions, and seasonings, and a few canned items ... and they even do some catering now. But at its heart it is still a full-fledged butcher shop. They have three cooler cases in the store taking up most of the footprint. One cooler had a selection of prepared foods so you could put together and take home your dinner, whether their prepared food items or their extensive deli selections; another one had the standard selection of high-quality meats where you could pick out your steak, or roast, or pre-marinated chicken, or skewered kabobs and the like; and the last cooler had pork items such as hams, BBQ ribs, etc. So in all, about 80 percent of the floor space is taken up with the coolers and the butcher shop items. The service staff was ample, busy, and really helpful and friendly. You are greeted when you show up at a cooler, and they let you wander around to see what's where and they are ready to help when you need it. They also have numerous meat items in the back, so be sure to ask for what you'd like even if you don't see it. We wanted some veal for a Slovak dish, and Jack & Pat's had some in the back ... so always ask. Anyway if you are in the market for a real old-fashioned meat market where they know their stuff ... you have to give this place a try.

Yelp
What a great place! Their ground chuck is outstanding for hamburgers on the grill. Their preformed porterhouse burgers are made in house and taste amazing. The steaks are everything you would expect from a professional butcher shop. They will do special orders and cut their meat to your liking. They also have daily fully cooked meals for take home like meatloaf, sausage and peppers, wings and a deli full of meats, cheese and salads. Service is generally very good, it is family owned. Sometimes there can be a bit of a wait on weekends and leading up to holidays. There is always A ton of things from the "olden days" to look at and read while waiting.

Yelp
Jack & Pats have some of my favorite simple sandwiches for catering. The bread, meat, cream cheese and pickle combo is so simple yet so good.

Yelp
Wow I best meat we've had in many years! Bought 5 meats all were excellent ! Very reasonable also! Passing up many places to go there from Plainfield! See you next week! Need more stars!!!!!

Yelp
Jack and Pat's has some of the best meat and prices in the area. Their brats, which come in different flavors are second to none and don't squirt grease all over when you cook them, like Johnsonville and others do. The employees are usually very nice and accommodating with any special requests. However, I do have one issue with this store, and that it's kind of filthy. There are wooden beams above the meat counter area that are just covered in dust and dirt, and look like they haven't been cleaned in 20 years. The last time I was in there, a clump of dirt or dust actually fell off the beams from above and fell down next to where the people were cutting meat on the counter, just missing the meat. There is an old phone hanging up behind the counter with the same thing, covered in dust and dirt, which is really gross to see that right by the food they are prepping. J&P, please clean your store, especially in these crazy COVID times.

Yelp
I have lived in the area many years and Just recently found Jack & Pat's. What a pleasant surprise and a great find. Unhappy with the slop they are selling at the big stores we decided to try it out. We are so glad we did. The staff is friendly, helpful and amazing. The meats are even better. OMG a I will never get meat anywhere else. Please also note that they cater. You have to order ahead. John is the cook and he always does a super amazing job. Please support local business. They are the backbone to our nation. Thanks Jack and Pat's for a job always well done!

Yelp
Picked up some porter house burgers and polish for the grill. Exceptional. Couldn't have tasted better

Yelp
Great hometown butcher shop! I always go there when I want to splurge for a great ribeye.

Yelp
COVID Alert: Nice Shop, great service, great if pricey meat. Pre-ordered some expensive meat; no problem, super nice butcher, did as I asked exactly. Got there to pick up; order was perfect. BUT. Not only were there at least 4 customers in the VERY small shop where social distancing is impossible, wearing masks under their noses (not the shop's fault though I think door sign should say "masks required over NOSE & MOUTH," maybe with a picture of the proper way for the COVIDIOTS) but two of the BUTCHERS were also wearing masks improperly as was at least one of the deli workers. So cross another place off my list until there is a vaccine. I don't want to die of a deadly virus for a piece of meat. It's not that hard. Wear a mask. Wear it correctly.

Yelp
Awesome old-fashioned butcher. These guys have been here forever and they know their stuff. I don't always get a chance to get over here, but I picked up my St. Patrick's Day beef brisket, and I cannot wait to cook it. They have more than just butcher meats. They also have some small groceries, and although, a small assortment, some very nice looking produce.

Yelp
Welcome to the Old School. I mean that in the best way. Walking in takes me back to the '70's and walking to Pickwic's from Grandma's house. It feels like walking into a bungalow, which is also a killer butcher shop. I cannot remember what they are called, but the chicken on a stick was good. Everything I bought at Jack and Pat's was good. Go stroll down memory lane, while you are there get something to put on the grill. Then, I'll race you to Pickwick's - wait a minute, Pickwick's is gone...

Yelp
Since 1972, Jack & Pat's has been my place to go on the southside for meat. Old-school to the max, it stands out from the other shops. They are commitment to not only providing the freshest, highest-quality meat, but also great customer service. If you want something you don't see in the counter, just ask for it and they'll cut it to order. Staff is also incredibly knowledgeable, and can help with tips, tricks, and recipes. This is one for the few places where I can find Uncle Dougie's "Chicago Style Chicken Wing Marinade", my all-time favorite marinade. Highly Recommend giving this place a try!

Joel S.

Yelp
Old school butcher that has been family owed and operated for several generations. Customer service and quality is second to none. Quite an assortment of what you expect to find at a butcher shop, PLUS a lot of made in house, prepared / marinaded meat/ par-made, etc. items to take home and cook / complete. The staff are a wealth of information by the way...We've learned some great recipes and preparation tips from them over the years.

Yelp
Love this store! I buy all of my fresh meat from Jack & Pat's. They always have a huge variety and they will accommodate whatever you're looking for! Friendly staff and great selection! You can also order pre-made dinners here! They have an assortment of fresh baked goods as well, like Irish soda bread. Highly recommend this little mom and pop shop!

Yelp
I love Jack n Pats!! I go here every time I need meat products. After grocery its JnP. The meat is fresh and soooo delicious. Being single, the butchers will cut a roast just enough for one with leftovers. I have never had a bad roast or steak. The deli is great, the workers are friendly and help pick out the best.

Yelp
The best pizza set ups!!! The employees were very helpful and friendly! The store is very clean!

Yelp
Recently ordered some USDA Prime. Solid customer service on the phone. The website is easy to use and powered by Shopify. Pricing is comparable for items purchased through other vendors. Then the Checkout...Free shipping ? Sure! Why not? Taxes 10% total. Whatsup? BTW- pickup at shop is the same pricing. 6.25% for the state 1% for Alsip 2.75 for Crook County Tax rates are perplexing and concerning. Isn't this a retail establishment with fresh products, Not a restaurant? *There is no FREE lunch, but most folks understand delivery fees.
google avatar

Yelp
Jack and Pats is a called an old fashion Irish deli but it is so much more. They do have a huge deli and also have prepared meals. My favorite is the pizza kits which are sold in three packs. We like sausage and pepperoni on our pizzas but you can decide. When you check out don't forget to take a pretzel stick!

Esther A.

Yelp
Jack & Pat's not only has the best quality meats but their old fashioned attention to customer service is second to none. I have been shopping there for 15 years now and they just keep getting better as time goes on. Kudos to you for your quality service and meat ls at an affordable price
google avatar

Yelp
Best sausage in the world. Fresh and in house made perfect spices.

Brittany S.

Yelp
This place is ridiculous!! I hope no one shops here again. The amount of disrespect is disgusting! I called ahead to make sure they had what I nedded, they put me on hold to double check, obviously pressing the 'hold' button is too difficult for this place because i heard them saying they weren't sure if they had it. Then they got on the phone and assured me they did. So I spent 30 mins waiting in the sun to get to the counter for them to tell me they didn't have any. So I called the owner to see what happened and he told me "well they can say anything they want on the phone" then he hung up on me. This is not the first time something like this happened here. Take your business to Whittingham's, they deserve your money. This place is trash.
google avatar

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
They have great food and great pizza set ups. The employees are so rude and ignorant. Came in for pizza set ups and got the bag of cheese. I wanted another bag of half of pound of cheese. I was told I couldn't and the young girl made me feel stupid and I was treated so rudely. Also went in for a gift certificate too and the woman yelled at me because I wanted $15. Why is she getting mad? I gave you business lady!! Don't come here! If you want to be treated like crap, then go right in!

Veronica L.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place but, the entire meat department staff were wearing their masks like chin guards or only covering their mouth. Just FYI, to prevent the spread of COVID, the mask should fit to cover your nose, mouth and chin. If you adjust the mask to cover those areas, wash your hands before and after.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
This is a great ma and pa type grocery store/ butcher shop. They have a good selection of quality meats, deli items, and essential items. They also sell fresh baked Irish soda bread and brown bread which is worth the trip just by itself! I tried the marinated chicken breasts, meatloaf, baked ham, fresh sausage, and German potato salad which were all fabulous. Prices are very reasonable too. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. What a true gem on the southside!

Yelp
I was employed by this family in the late 80's when there was a drive in restaurant in Tinley Park. I enjoyed the experience. It was great to reconnect with these folks. We took home some great cuts of meat. You can see things being prepared on site. Can they work on customers service??? Ya sure but this is a mom and pop place, not a main line chain store.

Wendy B.

Yelp
Had my son's graduation party of 85 people catered from here. We loved their menu and prices but were concerned that they didn't deliver. Went ahead with it anyway and were surprisingly thrilled. Food was conveniently packed for us to easily transport, everything was hot and just perfect. John was excellent at helping select the portions that were needed and instructing us on how to set up at the house so everything was served hot and appropriately. This place will always be my caterer of choice. Everyone complimented us on how wonderful the food was. Jim & Wendy

Yelp
For Christmas dinner, the BF and I were looking to cook up some expensive, high quality meat. That we did, my friends; that we did. It took some time to find what we wanted, but we did. We discovered that they have some cuts that they don't keep up front (if you're looking for something but don't see it, ask.) I'm not completely convinced that the higher quality and better taste were in equal proportion to the higher prices for the same stuff at the grocery store, but on a special occasion, what the hell! Here's the thing that might keep me away, though: The employees were very friendly to us, but with each other, a few of them were openly snarky. I get that for sure--I've worked a lot in retail and restaurant and I know how stressful it can be and how co-workers can exacerbate the problem, but keep that stuff to the back room! Also, what's with the anti-Obamacare signage? In my opinion, shop owners can put up whatever signs they want (within reason), but isn't it a bad idea to alienate half of your customers? I might have impulse-bought some mustard with Guinness or a cream soda if I hadn't felt a bit unwanted in there with my liberal purse and my commie, pinko credit card.

Yelp
My dad used to come here all the time when I was a kid. Moved into the area recently and had to make the stop in myself. There's no reason for me to get my meat anywhere else. All of the meat is fresh, the salads are delicious, and the prices are great. My new go to butcher shop!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
I always wanted to come in here but I was kind of afraid for some reason. I thought I needed to be a better cook to walk in here. Crazy. I wish I had found this place sooner. The choices here actually make my cooking easier. They have all kinds of things made up and ready to go. I can just go home and throw it on the grill. The sirloin burgers are amazing. I'm also a huge fan of the chicken kabobs. I've been happy with the quality of the meat here. It really is good. The prices seem really cheap to me too. The only small issue I have is the staff. They aren't bad but they could certainly be a little friendlier.

Yelp
This review will be short and sweet. Greatest meat market in Chicago Ridge, as a matter of fact the only meat market in Chicago Ridge. Hands down. No question about it. This place has everything you could possibly want in an Old Fashioned Butcher Shop. Unbelievable selection, prices & quality. With old school butchers that will cut your favorite cut just how you want it. Does that say enough for you? They also have some killer potato wedges that are to die for. Deli meats are fresh and sliced to order regardless of how thin you want them. If you have a hankerin for some soft serve ice cream, during the summer they have an old time trolley car converted to sell ice cream and the like. Jack & Pat's also give alot back to the community so I am more than Happy to support them whenever I can. Keep up the great work.

Yelp
Jack and Pats is literally right down the street from me. Ive heard people talk about this place for quite some time so I figured I would give it a shot. A busy holiday weekend I traveled there to pick up some steaks for the fiance and I. I was surprised how small it was in there. It was however roomy enough for it to be super crowded and not feel cramped. I picked up a rib eye for me which was something like $11 a pound, and a NY Strip for my fiance running about $10 a pound. Im so used to going to grocery stores for steaks I was at first shocked at the price. However, the guy behind the counter let me pick which specific steaks I wanted, and when he weighed them, each was just over a pound. I thought "If the quality is good and we can cook these just right, Im saving way more money then if I went to a steak house" They had a lot of other meats there, ground rib eye burgers (which Im sure are awesome), different sausages (Im going to try the "extra hot" Italian one day), ground meats, pizza set ups, deli items etc. The little trolley on the outside of the shop was a pretty good deal too, I got 2 Chicago style dogs and an order of Chili for like $5,$6bucks. Ohh....and those steaks....complimented with the rub I put on it and cooked just right, they were BETTER then eating at an expensive steak house. SUPER juicy and great texture. Once you have one of these steaks you'll be disappointed having a thin 10 ounce max steak from the grocery store.

Scott S.

Yelp
If it's busy, which it frequently is, it can be a bit of a challenge. Overall though, it is worth it.

Anthony P.

Yelp
Overall prices are great. From steaks to pork chops. Have great homemade hot dogs and burgers. Even have corned beef plus many other things. Also have special dinners to take home every day at very reasonable prices. If I am in the area I will always stop . Butcher shops are disappearing. Glad they are still here.

Yelp
You know how businesses like to start advertisements about how this ain't your grandpappy's kind of thing because it's so modern and cool? Well Jack & Pat's is absolutely your grandpappy's meat market and it's amazing precisely because of that. They don't try to diversify into fad products, because they know where their strengths lie. Meat. Family business, small batches of things, good quality of meat butchered and tended to by people who know meat. Fresh sausage, nice cuts of steak, potato pancakes that really taste like Bubbie's? Yes please.
google avatar

Phyllis S.

Yelp
I've passed this place quite a few times on my way to visit family. Well this weekend I finally stopped in and bought some portabello mushroom bratwurst and (at my bro-in-law's suggestion) the "sizzle steaks". I've never really bought meat at a butcher shop before. The prices seemed pretty reasonable, but I really wasn't expecting much. I just figured my boyfriend would enjoy a nice Sweetest Day meal. Those $4 steaks were AWESOME!!!!! We just had them for dinner, and I don't think I've EVER had a nicer steak. My boyfriend said the bratwurst totally ROCKED too! You can bet I'll be bringing a cooler along next time I go to visit my sister!

Joe O.

Yelp
I've driven by this place a million times in my life and never gave it a second look until a friend told me to check it out. You will not be disappointed! These guys know their meat, super friendly and budget friendly. I'm definitely going back as often as I can. Highly recommend this place

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing! You can't go wrong catering from here. Everyone loves the food and it's reasonably priced. Definitely recommend trying!
google avatar

Brendan G.

Yelp
Not only the best butcher in Chicago Ridge, but Jack and Pat's is the best on the south side. Hard pressed to find better ground beef, pork chops, beef stew meat, lunch meat and stuffed chicken. The costs are reasonable, the staff are helpful, and have been there for years.
google avatar

Al G.

Yelp
All around best butcher that's on the s. Side of the city. Above and beyond. The best fresh Polish sausage in the City if not the Midwest . I've been in line with guys that's wives made them drive 1+ hrs just to get sausage for Christmas and Easter . If you are into a more spicy sausage go formation triple,XXX HOT ITALIAN. Amazing like my girlfriend . The anger and rage from the sausage seems to come for no where , but I love it, The rest of the cuts here are superb. Best steaks you can buy in the Chicagoland area... Don't cut your self short, eat here , plan a meal or two , it's worth your time.

Yelp
I came here on Super Bowl Sunday for pizza set ups. My usual places are closed on Sunday, but thank Jesus this place was open. I got 3 thin crust pizza crust, sauce and cheese all for $7.14. You cannot beat that price with a stick and this place is just steps from my bacon doughnut place, SWEET. Thanks for saving the day, Guys

Dr. Albert B.

Yelp
This place has been here for many years. They conduct business by serving up some of the freshest meat in the Southland (I hate that term but it works). Looking for a holiday roast? They got it. Looking for sausage other than Polish and Italian? They got it or they'll get it. This is one of the few spots left for me to purchase the greatest sausage ever made - Lithuanian. Prices are fair and they have a good sized parking lot. If you want quality meat avoid the big box stores and come here.

john h.

Yelp
Everything I get is always pretty good but never quite lives up to my expectations. Still one of the better neighborhood markets.
