Yelp
The name of this place accurately reflects the business ... and in such a good way. We have been to a few places - one notably in Calumet City - that claim to be old fashioned and that try to relive the old days, but most fail. Jack and Pat's tries and succeeds. This place is a third-generation affair.
The store is structured as an old butcher shop that has expanded somewhat to include a number of other items you may want to purchase with your meat selections - such as onions, and seasonings, and a few canned items ... and they even do some catering now. But at its heart it is still a full-fledged butcher shop. They have three cooler cases in the store taking up most of the footprint. One cooler had a selection of prepared foods so you could put together and take home your dinner, whether their prepared food items or their extensive deli selections; another one had the standard selection of high-quality meats where you could pick out your steak, or roast, or pre-marinated chicken, or skewered kabobs and the like; and the last cooler had pork items such as hams, BBQ ribs, etc. So in all, about 80 percent of the floor space is taken up with the coolers and the butcher shop items.
The service staff was ample, busy, and really helpful and friendly. You are greeted when you show up at a cooler, and they let you wander around to see what's where and they are ready to help when you need it. They also have numerous meat items in the back, so be sure to ask for what you'd like even if you don't see it. We wanted some veal for a Slovak dish, and Jack & Pat's had some in the back ... so always ask. Anyway if you are in the market for a real old-fashioned meat market where they know their stuff ... you have to give this place a try.
