Chicago Restaurant and Bar Openings to Know, July 2025 | Eater Chicago

"Fast-food chain Jack in the Box has returned to the Chicago area with a new restaurant in Plainfield, serving burgers, chicken sandwiches, tacos, milkshakes, and all-day breakfast offerings, and plans to open several locations in the city and surrounding suburbs in the coming months. The Chicago location is expected to open in Ashburn in September; there are nine restaurants in downstate Illinois." - Jeffy Mai

Google
First off, our server was very nice, I liked her, amazing service. Certainly impressed for a fast food location. However the food was very lackluster. Problem 1) Ordered two combos and there was no cheese. Last I checked per the website and the board, it comes with cheese. Problem 2) One combo was supposed to come with regular fries. Instead we got two orders of curly fries. Problem 3) Food was cold upon getting home 5 min away.

Being from Texas, I was excited to see Jack in the Box in the Chicago area. Since it was new, I expected everything to be good. Unfortunately, it's the same Jack in the Box experience you can get anywhere else. I ordered a Sourdough Jack Combo with curly fries - really best thing on the menu at Jack in the Box - and it took 20 minutes to get my order. When they called me number, there was just a sandwich in the bag - no fries or drink. That was quickly corrected, though I was disappointed when I turned around to the drink machine and they were out of everything. Even the drinks that didn't have a sign on them came out as water. The Sourdough Jack and the fries were warm and tasted as good or better than I remembered. Though it would have been nice to have a Coke with my meal. Unfortunately the place was swarmed with people and there was no chance of getting any concerns addressed. Jack in the Box should have brought in some management to help with the restaurant in addition to hiring security guards. Instead the restaurant runs like a free for all and a lot of people running around with no apparent purpose. So ... just like a normal Jack in the Box.

Google
Welcome back, Jack! I’ve been checking almost every day for this location to open and today was the Grand Opening. It was definitely busy, but I decided to go inside. I was in and out in under an hour, which honestly exceeded my expectations. With the crowd they had, I expected chaos, but the team handled it really well. The food was fresh and delicious, and the service was organized despite the rush. I’m genuinely impressed with how smoothly everything went. Great job, Jack in the Box. I will be back often!

Food taste good! Sold out of Tacos! Love curly fries and burger. Onion rings good too but wait 2 1/2 hrs is crazy . Egg rolls tasty good. I love the tacos better than Taco Bell.

Google
The hype is ridiculous. Got a number 3, was hands down the worst burger I've ever had. The burger was so dry. The tacos were trash. Soggy as he'll and very little crisp. Fries were mid, curly fries were the most decent thing I ordered. I was extremely disappointed. If this is supposed to be amazing food then people have low expectations. If I could give a minus stars I would of.

Google
The food was edible however, when I ordered a bunch of mini tacos, I heard one of the staff members scream about it asking who was so fat. The tacos where good however are fryes where undercooked and not salted we orderd drinks and was not given it when we went back up to get are drinks they were not calibrated properly. We ended up having to make soda water into our drinks to make them the proper consistency. As on the root beer it was coming out as straight syrup and the coke. It was coming out with no syrup. Coke the drink in the picture is Coke from the machine. As you can see there is no color in the straws. I start drinking it. This was the first time me and my friend had been to Jack in The box. It will probably be the last as this was terrible

Google
I jalapeño poppers and tiny tacos were good but the rest of my order was messed up. One my chicken bacon sandwich there was barely any bacon and almost no ranch. The ultimate bacon cheeseburger I got also had almost no sauce and just about no bacon. The person on the speaker was very rude and we sat in the line for around 45 mins for mid food. Can’t say if I will be back or not.

Christopher Z.

Google
Waited an hour after ordering to find out they gave our food to someone else. Then they gave us a shake to make up for it. You waisted an hour of my life, comp they should have comped the meal! I used to love Jack, but I’m done. That’s the 2nd time they screwed us on our order. And the food was cold which means they’re cooking it and it’s just sitting out. Food safety needs to shut this place down.

Yelp
We did two of the $10 munchie boxes. The tacos were absolutely disgusting. They tasted like they had been reheated and the lettuce inside was very soggy and they were greasy and did not taste good at all. Which was disappointing because I've had the tacos at a different location and they are usually good. The chicken sandwich also had no taste and didn't seem like it was cooked properly. I definitely would not get it again. The curly fries were not fresh at all. The burger was just OK. A lot of their drinks from the fountain were coming out clear and were very watered down.

Yelp
This place is trash. NOTHING LIKE I REMEMBER. Not sure what happened but the meat in the burgers is paper thin and gross. Nothing was hot and the pop tasted flat. The tacos were grease sponges to best describe them. Definitely a 1 and done. ZERO STARS...forced to give 1

Yelp
Well I waited the 2 1/2-3 months for the lines to go down. Service was fine it was very nice, but in the end the sourdough breakfast sandwich was extremely mediocre. But I have it again yeah I guess so if I needed to but I wouldn't seek it out. I will stop back to try the burgers and see if there are any better but basically the breakfast stuff is 2 1/2 stars which means it's basically average, nothing special.

Yelp
After waiting a few weeks until the lines died down, we went to dine inside. I grew up on the tacos, and was extremely excited. We ordered a jumbo jack meal, tacos, and egg rolls. Being busy one would assume the food would be hot. Everything except the fries was cold.No sauces for anything were offered. The iced teas were empty. It was to busy to try and find someone to complain to. I will be writing to corporate, especially since both of us felt sick afterwards.

Yelp
It's only been open a couple of weeks, and the buzz is real. The drivethru line was insane, so I decided to brave the inside. They've got this thing where they only let a few families in at a time,a bit of a wait in a small, not air conditioned area, but hey, at least the staff were super friendly and even offered us water while we waited. The girl taking orders was a nice. We tried a bunch of stuff, the egg rolls were good, but the sauced and loaded tiny tacos were amazing, definitely a must try. They were out of curly fries, bummer, but the regular fries were better than Burger King's, which is saying something. The stuffed jalapeños were a bit of a miss, they came out cold, and the cheese hadn't melted. The burgers were decent. The bacon and Swiss buttery smashed jack was pretty good, but the double jack needed a little something extra , some sauce or seasoning would have kicked it up a notch. The sriracha honey sauce helped, but it still felt a bit plain. The buttery smashed jack was the best burger, especially after I added some jalapeños. The bun on all the burgers was a little thick, though. The ranch chicken sandwich was crispy and tasty. Overall, the food was pretty good, but I wouldn't exactly go out of my way for it. It's worth a try if you're in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't make a special trip just for it.

Yelp
Online ordering doesn't work here so you can't view the menu. Can't use the 20 percent off because of no online ordering. Employee at drive through is clueless. I wanted to do the September $1 donation for a curly fry and she asked if I had a coupon. Numerous employees with long hair and only one had a hair net. The curly fries ended up being awful, only ate a few after paying full price. The burger looked so sloppy I through it out. This is a one and done restaurant. Never again.

Karen E.

Yelp
Service is the worse waited 45 minutes for 2 tacos . This was eat in Not clean. Should have never oped without adequate staffing

Brian D.

Yelp
One and done. Bland, lukewarm, order wrong, slow. Why was there ever any hype for yet another corporate fast food place. Want a good burger? Try Westfield Family Restaurant (the double cheeseburger is great), Longshots, McBride's, Backroads, etc, etc, etc, etc.... Plenty of locally owned restaurants with much better food.

Robert M.

Yelp
Crazy as it seems, we tried it, once the lines have died dow. The burgers are better than mCd & the wife thought the tacos were pretty good. Won't be on our every day menu, but once in a while won't kill us either!

Andrea S.

Yelp
I wasn't able to give something lower than 1 star which is what this place deserves. it actually needs something located below the earth's core. The Plainfield, Illinois location is by far the slowest, most unprofessional, and most disorganized Jack in the Box I've ever encountered. I'm still in line after placing my order over 1 hour and 10 mins ago....... And counting. Ive still yet to receive my food. I don't understand what the issue is and why there is ALWAYS a long line and wait. I'm not pleased and may discontinue patronizing this location. It really brings a bad name and image to the franchise.

Dwight C.

Yelp
Not allowing for zero stars makes it harder to rate this place. Went last night (Saturday). Was told they were not taking any more guests. Cones blocking the drive-thru and a guard at the door apologizing for following the manager's orders to halt visitors. Really? It was 9:30, with a posted closing time of 10:00 (and signs on the building boasting of being open "late"). Given we live several miles from the location, this was beyond inconvenient. I have seen several posts attesting to horrible service at this location, but decided to try it anyway - my mistake. Can't attest to the accuracy of the multiple bad food reviews, but it wouln't surprise me given how this outlet is being run. If corporate allows this behavior to continue it will likely lead to damage to their brand. If this is a franchise, maybe the owner should consider another line of work.

Yelp
Food was cold! Taco looked like all lettuce, had hardly any meat. Took 40 minutes to get to order then asked to wait. 5 minutes later they took our order! We know they're new but the food could at least be hot!! May come back after a few months to see if they improve but not holding our breath

Yelp
Went there a couple of weeks ago to see what the hype was all about and it will be my first and last visit. I ordered the Buttery Smashed Burger Combo. Overcooked, dry, flavorless burger. I've had better burgers from gas stations. The biggest disappointment was the fries. Absolutely the worst French Fries I've ever eaten. With this location being new, I can overlook any issues with service. But bad food will keep me away.

Sandy S.

Yelp
Finally went to try it after the craziness went down. The place wasn't all that busy except for people standing in the front waiting for their food. Was exactly 46 minutes from when we placed our order till our number was finally called. The fries weren't even hot. We were all too aggravated with our wait to even notice the taste of the burgers.

Mike A.

Yelp
I get they're new but don't open until you're ready. Not letting people in. Online ordering not working. No hot honey chicken strips. No shakes. Floor oily and dirty. Staff slow.
google avatar

Stan L.

Yelp
Unprofessional staff, drive thru staff is taking orders while 3-4 employees are outside the restaurant, one saying we closed, we closed. Employees turned away 3 cars already in drive thru prior to 10pm closing time.

Sean M.

Yelp
The drive thru is a miserable experience, the teenager working it can't hear at all. I was speaking very clearly and had to constantly repeat myself. Also, they were sold out of tacos and there was no mention of that anywhere (no signs, no anything), until I got to the speaker. So that was fun. I love Jack in the Box, but this wasn't a very good reintroduction.

Bay M.

Yelp
Service was horrible. Took over 30 minutes for just 4 people in line. I ordered a chicken sandwich and I received 3 burgers. This is unacceptable. I was very sad and disturbed from this place being this bad. Do not come. Wasting your money.

Laurie B.

Yelp
Food was Horrible . Service in drive thru was outrageously unprofessional. Makes me worried about the cleanliness of the restaurant.

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Really bad experience. We were super excited to try this place as it is in our neighborhood, only to be disappointed. We were in line for an hour and when we went to order, they didn't have any tacos. They advertise on their t-shirt "The burger place known for their tacos". We ordered burgers and mine was supposed to have bacon on it and it was a small almost transparent piece that was literally like 1"x 2" size. The burger was rubbery. Yuck. There are a ton of other options out there. If it was under $10 for both value meals, I would understand that you get what you pay for, but this was $28 and sorry, but we will not be back. Very disappointing as we like to patron neighborhood places.

Bill J.

Yelp
Every time I have been there they are real busy. The employees are always friendly and we always customize our burgers and have never received them wrong. The food looks presentable every time it's not just thrown on a bun

Kandi H.

Yelp
If you love waiting 30 minutes or more for cold food, come here! Obviously the health department hasn't educated them as to correct serving temperatures

Billy M.

Yelp
Went twice. Order messed up. Staff is clueless! Went to drive up first, 30 minute wait, went inside 45 minutes to get 1 jumbo jack. Soda machine is mostly soda water!!! Loved them in St. Louis and Texas. I won't be going back. And the design to get in and out is insane.

Mark M.

Yelp
Waited in the drive through line for literally 35 minutes. Got home and 3 items were missing from my order. Never going back there again

Ethan N.

Yelp
Went inside to order and they told us all of the registers weren't working, then we sat in line for a half hour just to place an order. How are they able to take drive through orders when all the registers weren't working.

Shari B.

Yelp
We used to eat at Jack in the box in CA and we're very disappointed when we moved to Illinois and the closest one was 3 hours away. We were thrilled to find out about the one in Plainfield. Went there today for the first time. The food was so good, just like we remembered. Michelle's customer service was great. She was so friendly and made sure we got what we needed. We'll definitely be back!!

Patricia C.

Yelp
1st time going here, I would give the atmosphere an F as I was sitting in the seat farthest from the counter and I could hear the manager swearing, yes she was that loud and all the tables were dirty but as in the food it was great and I would give it a 10 the cashier was friendly , just the manager yelling what the hell was a little much , I will be back but I will go through the drive through only

Cindy S.

Yelp
Definitely call and make sure they are open if you go later in the evening because they haven't been open as late as their website says (closed 10:40pm on Sunday) open until midnight.

Steve L.

Yelp
On Thursday I was in the drive through line and placed my order. Picked up my order and drove home. When I got home I realized that about 1/3 of my order was missing. There is no phone number to call on the receipt. I looked up the number online only to find out they were not accepting calls at this time. I drove all the way back to the restaurant to get my missing items. The doors were locked so after knocking on the door for 10 minutes an employee answered. I showed him my receipt and he said he would walk the items out to my car. After waiting another 15 minutes or so an employee with a trainer name badge came out to see what I was waiting for. He immediately took care of my missing items.

Barry T.

Yelp
a big fat zeero!!!! if mismanagement was an olympic event, they are the michael phelps of mismanagement!!!!! why are the lines so long if they are that bad??? because they're trying to suck you in thinking, they must have great food or great deals ahhhh.....no. don't take my word for it read other reviews anywhere!!! most reviews are 1 star.terrible location too one way in one way out.

Tommy B.

Yelp
Friendly staff and food was good. All the negative Google reviews are Karen's that cry about the long lines like they're entitled. Did they expect there to be zero wait? Especially at a fast food establishment that hasn't been around in a long time. There's always going to be hiccups at first. After we ordered, it was a little bit of a wait, but the manager recognised that and immediately offered to help. On top of it, he gave us a tasty dessert for our troubles. I recommend trying this place and giving them the benefit with all these people that are trying to go right now.

Susan K.

Yelp
The food was wonderful, fresh and hot. Problem is that I figured it took up to 5 minutes per car in line. I guess there were 15-17 cars in line and it took close to 90 minutes. I wasn't in a hurry and couldn't wait to get reacquainted with their food but something has to change inside. BTW, the staff was very nice.

Martin R.

Yelp
The food was hot and good and the mini tacos were amazing. The staff was very friendly, overall I'd recommend this place despite all the negative reviews.

John C.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I am a huge Jack in the Box fan. I went there often many years ago when they were still in our area. Then they were gone. I was left to drive more than three hours each way or fly to the west coast to get my Jack fix. I wrote many times pleading to come back to the Chicago metro area. About a year ago it was announced that Jack was returning to our area. I was overjoyed, then it got better. The very first one to open here would be in my hometown. The Joliet/Plainfield location opened on July 12th. I was there the first day patiently waiting in a huge line, which I expected. But the wait was worth it. The tacos were awesome. Since then I've made several visits. It's still very busy, but with several other locations nearby opening soon, I'm sure it will get less busy. Thanks for coming back Jack!

Lucretia S.

Yelp
My husband waited 2hrs just to get over salted burgers and not to mention the French fries was a let down also. So to all the people waiting in line go to Culvers.

Christopher K.

Yelp
Understanding this is a new restaurant that just opened, but I've been there four times in the morning and they were still closed needing another hour or so to get things ready. This was very disappointing. Was there one afternoon the jumbo jack burger and tacos were good however ordered three small fries at $1.89 each and each of the bags only had 4-5 fries in each bag now that's rip off. If we haven't pulled away and we're halfway home, I would've definitely brought them back in for a refund..

Mark A.

Yelp
When I was a kid and went to work with my dad he would treat me to Jack In The Box. It was our thing. After they moved out of Chicago and I grew up whenever I visited the west coast I would make a Jack In The box run. So I was excited when the store opened in Joliet (Plainfield address, but it is in Joliet). I understand the chain's desire to start making revenue as quickly as possible, but you gotta balance that with being ready to operate at peak volume, with properly prepared food, and with the dining room open knowing this location will attract a lot of former Chicago area fans, and will be an introduction to a lot of new customers that have never experienced Jack In The Box before. Like they say "first impressions...". Isn't this Business 101? Either the chain does not understand this or they do not care. I was able to get in the dining room once and order my food. Was not that warm. I figure OK, they are new so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. I tried to go back 3 more times to get into the dining room (not sitting in that long drive thru) only to be told it is closed because of staffing shortages. When I went yesterday I was told the dining room closed at 10 PM. I was there are 9:40 PM. I pointed that out and was told 'sorry'. Really?
