The 26 Best Restaurants in Anchorage, Alaska | Eater

"Located a half hour drive down the Seward Highway in the ski resort community of Girdwood, but still somehow in Anchorage city limits, this very popular spot offers a menu heavy on local seafood and vegan and gluten-free offerings. Among them – loaded vegan nachos, fresh Kodiak scallops in a miso ponzu sauce, and a mondo halibut burrito. Indoor and outdoor seating. No reservations, first come, first served. Excellent kids menu. Beer and wine." - Julia O'Malley

This was honestly the best meal I've had in a while. Our server was incredibly welcoming. Our meals were amazing. The Mama Mia! might be the winner. I appreciated the extensive kids menu. The Birds and the Trees was a great healthy option. Not sure how they cooked those carrots, but they were to die for!

Google
Great local spot. Ordered the halibut cheeks lettuce wraps🥰. Salmon bowl, and sausage pasta. Food was great, service was pretty slow, the gentleman next to us sent back his food and ordered something else and it took over 20 min to get his next dish.

Google
Absolutely the best service and food in Alaska. 7 glaciers and the double musky have a lot of catching up to do. The atmosphere is relaxed with low lit dining experience and people are welcomed casual. Chef Ryan is literally the best in the state. Thank you for bringing this type of experience to the 907.

Google
This is a great spot to eat for quality food, vibes, etc. I kinda wish they had more to their menu but they still offer great food. Their burger is one of their best options (I’m sure their salmon is better I just haven’t tried it). What really makes them great is they have a high quality dessert! I feel I can never find a good dessert at a restaurant because it’s always some dry crusty cookie/cake with corn syrupy ice cream. Jack Sprat has a great chocolate olive oil cake with mascarpone! It’s perfect and would definitely get again.

Google
i’m so glad I decided to look up restaurants on the way home from Seward instead of getting back to Amsterdam where everything was probably already closed. I called ahead to this restaurant because we were only gonna have 40 minutes before they close. They said come on in. Salmon was fantastic, also got yummy bimbap bowl and a cider on tap. Insanely beautiful views! Great customer service. Great music playlist for this “hip” millennial. 🤗

Google
Claire was fantastic! Excellent vegetarian recommendations...Bibimin Bap and the Pasta was very very good.. So was the Ali Baba Burger.. Lot of vegetarian options etc..

Google
A cozy, somewhat Scandinavian, vibe inside! Service was excellent and entertaining. All of our food and wine was excellent, starting with the Cheesy Schmool! We also shared the Peanut Pan (large portion, slightly spicy) and the Alaska Man burger (perfectly cooked). Our friends also ordered the BLT with added steak and it was delicious. We were too full to order desert but we will be back for King Dong Cake!

Google
My friends and I arrived at Jack Spray after it was closed but the gentleman working allowed us in and let us order rose! It was such a nice gesture and created a fun memory for my friends as I as we were visiting Alaska on vacation! The rose was great and the atmosphere made it all the more magical. It was the perfect stop for a quick drink before exploring more of Girdwood. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the Girdwood area!

Yelp
Ambience- comfortable, romantic lodge Service was prompt and good. The waitress was knowledgeable on food options. We got the yams. Really tasty and huge on the order size. We then got the momma Mia (Italian linguini and vegetarian sausage). Again huge serving size. We split the order and took half home. It was delicious. Cost. This is not a cheap restaurant. Recommended. Note all deserts have chocolate in them

Yelp
Fantastic all around. Super cute place, there was a wood fire burning in the courtyard which was nice. We got there around 8pm and they close at 9. We waited about 5 mins to be seated. Everyone from hostess to waitress were extremely friendly and welcoming. Service was prompt and attentive. Three sisters app was almost gone when I took the pic. It's a cold white bean, squash and corn salad atop bean and cheese pupusas. It was creamy and tangy from a green salsa. It was fresh and hardy. The soup de jour was a wild mushroom and wild rice topped with Calabrian chili oil. It had veggies in it and was like a light stew. I loved the flavor and the chili oil left a little numbing of the lips which was a surprise. I had the Alaska Man burger. It was awesome, love the 2 Pattie's and bacon jam. They didn't ask about doneness when I ordered, but it came out a nice medium rare, bordering on medium. Fries were nice and crispy. My friend got the bibimbap with steak instead of pork. It was huge and comes in a HOT stone bowl. You mix it up and it kind of keeps cooking like fajitas. It was delicious. Really a cute gem in this little mountain town. I'll definitely be back if I visit Girdwood again

Yelp
We had dinner here after spending the evening at the Nordic Spa and this really was the cherry on top of a great night. We came in about 30 mins before closing but never felt rushed. Our server was friendly and quick to take our order. I won't say no to anything with a fried egg on top, so I got the bibimbap. It came out so hot you could hear the rice crisping in the stone pot. It took a long while for it to cool -- my fiance had nearly finished his burger by the time I could take actual full bites! I heated up the leftovers the next morning and it was soooo good. We were seated by the kitchen and enjoyed watching all the desserts being made. Unfortunately we had no room to order any, but will definitely plan on it on our next visit here.

Yelp
This was our favorite dinner place from our recent trip to Girdwood. Ian was our sever and he took great care of us for the evening making great drink and food recommendations and made us feel very welcome. The food was delicious we got the yams and the cheeks as an appetizer and went with the filet and pasta for dinner. If we come back to Girdwood, Jack Sprat would be the first place we head for dinner.

Yelp
This was a truly magical experience. If you have the opportunity to go here...DO IT! It is a gorgeous restaurant with incredible views of the mountain. The waitress we had was so kind and knowledgeable of the menu and gave great recommendations. The food was incredible and I can honestly say if I ever find myself back in Alaska...I will be stopping by Jack Sprat!

Yelp
This place is always hopping and can be difficult to get a seat due to no reservations allowed. My husband and I have been a few times and the service is always good. The sweet potato appetizer is always a hit. However, the entrees have not always been consistent. Still good, but the first time we went there was significantly better than the second. My husband enjoys the burger. The bibimbap was pretty good. Not a fan of the peanut noodles though. It's a big portion but so heavy and oily without much flavor.

trish c.

Yelp
Had a delish meal here. Great ambiance. Food was just awesome. Highly recommend halibut cheeks and Bim Bop. Husband loved the burger. The store Mother Hubbard is awesome next to it..

Nate S.

Yelp
Out waiter was Ian, he was professional, courteous, knowledgeable, and recommended one of the best meals we ever had, we never were left wanting. Absolutely a top tier server in a top tier restaurant. Can't recommend enough!!!!

Yelp
Oh no, did they change management or something? This is usually a favorite place, but our last visit left me feeling disenchanted. The Cheesy Schmool appetizer was dangerously too hot when it was served to us. Server (Carter?) didn't warn us, and the marinara sauce burnt my mouth. The focaccia bread that came with the Schmool was burnt black in places and shouldn't have been served to a guest. The Peanut Pan dish I usually love was lacking in flavor. It was just ok, but I was missing a depth of flavor. My baby got the "Oodles of Noodles" off the kids menu but the pasta wasn't made fresh for her, it seemed hard like it'd been sitting around for a while. The butter sauce was icky. She didn't eat any of it. The most distressing thing was the King Dong cake they're practically famous for is now different! I swear the filling used to have a lightweight delicious mascarpone and now it just tastes like dense-ish sweetened cream cheese. This is a mom-gripe, but I really wish they'd install a baby changing table in the bathrooms. Even just one? It's kind of horrible putting your sweet baby on the dirty floor when a diaper needs changing. Haven't given up hope on JS yet. Maybe our next time here will be back on track?

Yelp
Omgosh this place, so yummy and what a great location. I absolutely love their outdoor fire pit where you can sit and wait for your table. I like their little gift shop too. Inside the restaurant is gorgeous. It's hard to explain but it has an upscale rustic Alaska feeling to it. The hostess was darling and the server was very helpful. The food is delicious like lower 48 good! Sorry Alaska just being real here. Try the yam fries AMAZING, the avocado salsa, the wagyu beef burger and the vegan nachos! You're welcome! Oh and the blueberry soda in a can, FANTASTIC!!
google avatar

Kaylee M.

Yelp
Very popular place, so when you put your name on the waitlist, expect to wait a little bit. There is ample seating outside with a lovely fire pit so while waiting for a table is actually very cozy and enjoyable The star of the show for me was the vegan nachos. I personally am not vegan, but this appetizer is so delicious. I think even the most devoted carnivore would enjoy it. Packed with flavor and just the right amount of spiciness, the nachos were my menu favorite by far I also ordered the peanut pan noodles, which I enjoyed and ended up having enough leftover for a second meal later. I would've enjoyed being offered the ability to make it more spicy though. The service was friendly and attentive, and we were sat at a table that was elevated facing the rest of the dining hall, which felt like a cool experience

Guenter S.

Yelp
Service was very friendly. Very nice ambiance. We really liked the vegan nachos. The vegan burger and vegan chow fun was ok.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Such an adorable restaurant. It feels like you're dining in a cozy well-decorated cabin. The Nacho Libre app was amazing! Best vegan nachos we've ever had. The walnut meat was so full of flavor and had a great consistency. The Peanut Pan was sweet, creamy, and savory. It was deliciously peanut buttery and contained plenty of veggies. The tofu had a very light crisp on the outside and silken center. The Curry Salmon dish was very delicate and warming. Our waitress was very attentive and provided great service.

Yelp
"Burning mouth" The ambiance was great The service impeccable and personal. The yam orderve. Fantastic The beet salad oh so yummy Out glass of wine was perfect The best was the special miso, squash ? Soup with a coconut milk drizzle. Then the entree came and ruined our meal. Why ,oh why ,oh why ,oh why So some chefs on the eternal quest to be different.... Have to over spice fish We left with our mouths burning From the pepper? spice on the halibut cheeks. Sacrilege! Perfect meal ruined. I think it'll be a while till we come back. I expected better.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic food, ambience, and our server Carter made it such a wonderful experience. We ordered the soup de jour, salad, Chow Fun, and the vegan burger, and a King Dong for desert. Absolutely fantastic. Could not more highly recommend, especially if you're staying at Alyeska (this food is 10x what you would find at the resort).
google avatar

Ani A.

Yelp
We came across this place during our stay at hotel Alyeska. It was raining and we decided to give it a try. It was one of our best decisions made during this trip. The host was super nice and welcoming. The staff made excellent food recommendations. They adjust the menu items based on seasonal food. The food aesthetics were meticulous. Almost forgot, the interiors were decorated by a professional designer. Everything was color coordinated and it made the place extra cozy.

Yelp
It's off season at the local ski resort so it was quite nice not be in a crowded restaurant as popular as Jack Sprat. We never been so we didn't know what to expect. Super chill vibe! Love the architecture of the place and outside fire pit. My Bibimbop was savory & deliciously fire with their scratch made sriracha sauce! But my hubby's burger was a bit warm - tasty, but not hot off the grill hot.

Deans C.

Yelp
Amazing food, great service and a beautiful atmosphere. Halibut was delicious and best chocolate cake I have ever had.

Cindy C.

Yelp
Food was horrible. Cold and unappetizing. Will Never come back again was dismissed By the manager! Very disappointing! Kierra !
google avatar

Hwee L.

Yelp
Burger with wagyu beef taste extremely delicious. Lots of glass windows in the seating area.
google avatar

Melanie B.

Yelp
Meh. This place is okay. I really liked my peanut pan. Kinda heavy on the sauce, but good. My kids thought their dinners were fine, but no one was praising their food though. The focaccia was realllllly gummy. It should be way lighter and airier than this. Even my 13 yr old was like "Well, this focaccia is really mid." Yeah. She's not lying. It ended with King Dong cake. In my oldest kid's words "This king dong cake is giving off small D energy." There aren't a lot of choices in Girdwood. It was okay, but we'd probably drive to anchorage before we'd eat here again

Hillary N.

Yelp
Delicious food. Relaxing/ natural aesthetic. Great vibes! Carter was the best!! We had a big group and the restaurant was so accommodating and Carter was so fun and adaptable to our group while maintaining professionalism was super knowledgeable on the menu and the area.
google avatar

Jocelyn C.

Yelp
What a great vibe and some really good food. Would definitely recommend coming to visit here. The interior is absolutely beautifully, and this is a nice place to celebrate a special moment. We got the scallops, vegan nachos, and brisket. Definitely recommend the scallops and nachos. Brisket had good intentions but was a little stringy; not a good use of $40. Would gladly come back to enjoy the beauty, ambience, and food for a special occasion.

Yelp
Coming to Jack Sprat is always a treat. It is rare that I can find a table on short notice, but we happened to get there as a table opened up in the sunroom. Everything made is fresh and delicious. The food is always presented beautifully and the ambiance is casual yet elegant. It is a perfect date night location or quick dinner with the girls after the spa. Everyone should try Jack Sprat at least once while they are in Girdwood.
google avatar

Claire M.

Yelp
Hands down the best restaurant in Alaska. OUTSTANDING and UNIQUE flavor, tasteable freshness and high quality of food used, lovely ambiance, and great staff. Highly recommend any and everything off this menu... but especially the yam appetizer and steak entree (:
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
Jack Sprat is a local staple in Girdwood that is always a fun, warm, and welcoming place to have a bite to eat. For those who haven't been before, the yam fries are a must. They are unlike any other sweet potato or yam fries that I've had before and the aioli on the side is to die for. On Wednesday nights, they do a burger special, which is what I had and was absolutely delicious. For a drink I had the mulled wine, which was warm and cozy after a cold day. We had the King Dong cake for dessert, which even for someone who doesn't love love chocolate, was delicious. Looking forward to the next time I get to come back

Yelp
I came here with a small group and being that there's no advanced reservations we were put on a waiting list for approximately 30 minutes. It wasn't a bad wait, the weather was decent, and it was pleasant outside. Upon being seated we were placed in this booth where I sat at the furthest end scooting to get there since it wasn't easily accessible. The menu was nice and we ordered quickly. I ordered the BLT salad and thought it was great. There was generous amount of bacon, the crumbled cheese was very pleasant, and the tomatoes and grapes offered a nice contrast to the savory bacon. I was very put-off by our waiter. I picked up immediately upon entering there had been a problem with one of his tables as the leaving customers had a look cross between disappointment and anger while our waiter profusely apologized. He looked defeated and it stuck with him. He was very short with us and seemed exasperated by any question. I also get that I was at the furthest end and handing me anything directly in front of me wasn't possible, but coming up behind me expecting that I'd know he was there perturbed me. He was soft spoken, the restaurant was loud, and I never knew when he'd pop up. By the second time I wish I had a directional mirror to see when he was coming! All in all it was a fine experience. It isn't a place I necessarily will return to again.
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
The ambiance and service were great, but I think the food was overpriced for the quality. The Bibimbap and halibut were not very good given the price. The Bibimbap sauce was not gochujang. The halibut was well cooked but the portions were small given the price. This is the best option for Alyeska but don't have high hops.

Mark F.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! Classic Alaskan cuisine Ina mountain town! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Jamie B.

Yelp
We go to Jack Sprat about once a year. Just some things to consider to manage expectations: No reservations and limited hours, so there is often a longer wait than what is usual around the area. Very expensive for what you get, and a small but varied menu. Only beer and wine. The food is decent, and I can definitely appreciate that they try to source local ingredients, vegan options, and have a rotating special. I believe I've had everything on their current menu and it's all been fine. The ambiance is nice with low lighting and open windows. Pictured here was the Basta Pasta special with steak bites.
google avatar

Glen Y.

Yelp
We arrived at this place and were asked to wait 20 mins. We entered through the dining area during seating where we noticed plenty of tables were available. One odd thing that we noticed was that all water glasses all tables were pre-filled by the service there which is a health violation at most dining facilities. In my water cup I had a bug floating towards the bottom of water cup. There was another customer who questioned the pre-fill the water cups. Our server had also made an error with one of our drinks but was corrected before the food came out.

Russ C.

Yelp
This is a review on past experiences and also seeing this has happened to multiple parties not just ours. Super slow service and food comes out cold only to be told " we are busy" The management here needs a reality check, and some serious coaching on how to handle situations. Based on the "owners" comment on a recent one star shows all you need to know about how they run a business. "Whats more to complain about" alot actually, 1 learn how to treat customers right. 2 learn how to address concerns. 3 get both sides to the story. 4 have management that care more about customers and ensuring service is not slow, and food is edible than just $$$ signs. What was your comment on another post? Bashing a group of ladies based on shirts they were wearing.
google avatar

Yelp
The best food around. Period! We visited for the New Year's Eve five course meal. The food was plated to perfection and looked just as good as it tasted. I love the use of fresh ingredients and unique flavors. Our waitress was outstanding! It was very busy but she managed to make us feel as if we were the only people there. I absolutely loved the inside of the restaurant. It is extremely cozy. You can tell that every single detail is thought out for the customer to have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The wine and beer menu is extensive and the wine pairing with the five course meal was excellent! Whether you're staying in Girdwood, passing through, or just in the area looking for some outstanding food, I would highly recommend you visit Jack Sprat for a high-quality, delicious meal!

Maggie P.

Yelp
My husband and I enjoyed a meal here after a day of exploring. The ambiance was great- really cute inside with a cozy feel. We both had the burger which was good-it was slightly overcooked which lead to it being a little dry but the flavor was really good. Service was great, would definitely come back!
google avatar

Leigh H.

Yelp
The food is a solid 3.8 star. I am giving it a 4-star because of good service (wait time is accurate, fire pit is cool, interior is really nice and our waiter is really friendly and kind). The dessert came out a bit late, and our waiter came by explaining, apologizing, and offering us free coffee. You do not get this kind of services these days! I think our expectations were set high as we watched a few YouTube clips in advance. If I have to summarize, I think they can be bolder with flavor. Together, we tried: cheese appetizer (good since hubby was craving carbs), kale Cesar with scallop (great, worth trying), peanut pan (twisted pad Thai with too much creamy peanut butter needing a bit more crunchy), and chocolate olive oil cake (very good).

Mike C.

Yelp
First I want to say that I have gone to Jack Sprat MANY times. Every time I've been here it has been amazing! Unfortunately, this time the food was horrible. They did a special Valentine menu. We didn't get to select anything, they brought everything out based on their special Valentine menu. The food was nothing like normal Jack Sprat type food. Honestly, it was really really really weird food. The duck was significantly undercooked. We sent it back, but it still wasn't good. Unfortunately now my girl has the $hits. WONDERFUL...on Valentine's Day...sooo much for a romantic night. lol Highly recommend that people go there during their normal menu and avoid any special menus.

Yelp
Jack Sprat: the menu is for "foodies." I simply "don't get" the negative reviews concerning Jack Sprat Restaurant in Girdwood. One must wonder if folks have taken leave of their senses. The Golden Rule of travel is research. Yelp provides an excellent restaurant list, but the user must goto the homepage of the restaurants and read the menu! Jack Sprat Restaurant is nothing short of GOURMET DINING!!! Annie W., greeter and server met me with a smile a mile wide! Jack Sprat Restaurant is very small, and we choose the wonderful Solarium to DINE! Totally loved the menu, and so do lots of other folks. Main dining room is small; solarium dining is a best bet in the rain; deck is neat; and there is a "yard dining area." We don't do spirits when driving, and ordered the velvet hash, which seem to be a mixture of delicious beets, potatoes, apples, and two eggs. WOW! This is not corned beef hash, and the chef knows HER stuff! Loved Jack Sprat Restaurant, and the menu is for "foodies." Want something else goto another Girdwood restaurant. The fare is appropriate for the tariff!
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
Service was great! We were a two top set next to a party of six. It was very difficult for us to talk. The beet salad was a true piece of art! Delicious and well balanced. I ordered the catch of the day. Sumac blackened halibut cheeks. It was very spice forward and bordered on too much seasoning for the delicate fish.
google avatar

Kelsey B.

Yelp
A+ food in an A+ dining environment! I had the Bibimbap with scallops instead of pork. It was the best decision I have made all year. I hope to come back to Jack Sprat the next time I'm in Alaska.
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
Good food and nice atmosphere. We stopped by during Forest Fair weekend. It was pretty crowded, but we were seated outdoors in about 30 minutes (Inside was a longer wait). Food was really good. Our server said it had just changed, but we were super happy with our choices. My favorite was the pasta dish - it was so tasty! They had a good selection of local-ish brews which I loved trying. Outside was fun, inside was super cute and cozy. If I go again, I'd for sure make a reservation a head of time.

Kathy C.

Yelp
Great food and service Enjoyed the halibut cheeks Staff friendly and we'll trained It's a no reservation place so expect to wait We we're lucky to find bar seating

Yelp
We came here March 12 2023 to celebrate our anniversary, I've lived here my whole life and we both had never been so we got to check it off our list. It opened at 4 and we knew to get their when it opened. When we walked up about 20 minutes before it opened there was one other family waiting nearby. We got seated second. I think this is a Girdwood thing but many restaurants do t take reservations and make it seem like everything is so sacred and you need to line up beforehand to get it or you'll miss out- kind of a high ego thing and I am not a fan of this vibe here in town. The building is beautiful, especially on the inside. Very nice set tables and everything was clean. The menu is kind of small with about 6 apps and 6 entrees. When we went we got a cheesy schmool which is tomato's sauce with ricotta in it and fresh baked focaccia bread. The bread was thick but good, could of used some salt. The tomato's sauce was very hot and burned the roof of my mouth but it was good. Was good but tried it once no need for a second round. Ricotta was our next choice. Apps were highly priced considering they normally are supposed to be cheaper than the main course but it wasn't much. For dinner we both actually got the wagu burger. It only being $21 I think it's half wagu half beef? Wasn't specific. Said "1/2#wagu" It was very good. Well seasoned, fresh baked bun, scraped my onions off but my husband said they were done very well and he enjoyed them. Pickles and tomatoes were nice. Fries were hot and fresh. I think they make pretty much everything themselves. The yam fries were huge and very good also. Had some kind of sauce that was good. The chocolate king cake was so good with the chocolate ganache, we were full and got it to go but we ate a few bites in the car :) no pictures of that oops but other people have. Didn't get any drinks, only beer and wine. $80 total not terrible. I heard they do breakfast in the summer? No word on their website but would think about coming there for brunch but nothing really I would want to try for dinner again.

Yelp
Great vegan options and amazing vegan nachos! If you want to be treated to beautiful scenery and a great atmosphere while enjoying delicious vegan food, this is a good choice.

Yelp
Jack Sprat does not miss! Everything is good. You will leave with leftovers...unless you're starving from skiing all day! (; great service, very friendly. Repeat customers for the unique options and great ambiance.

Sonya D.

Yelp
If you want great restaurant, delicious food and friendly service in Girdwood ? Go to Spoon line restaurant. If you want Poor Customer Service and Rude Mgr ? Go to Jack Sprat . Don't waste your $$$ in Jack Sprat. Sonya

Terri A.

Yelp
Manager and service so bad!! Very rude manager and untrained staff! I would recommend to try other Restaurants..
google avatar

Amber G.

Yelp
We must have caught this restaurant during an off period bc the food wasn't as good as I had heard it was. All of our dishes were cold, and a lady at a neighboring table sent hers back to be heated up. However, the sweet potato fries were delicious! The decor was amazing, including the outdoor fire pit!

Latasha E.

Yelp
Service was great. Like most places you have to wait when you get there and they don't do reservations for less than 6 but that's usual for Alaska. The menu is filled with fresh items. The presentation is beautiful. One thing, request modifications if you like herbs and spices or need more protein for salads and pasta. Don't wait for the result the kitchen is too busy for that. I requested extra sauce for the Peanut Pan pasta dish. It was just right after a 15 minute wait but it's made to order. I needed more shrimp and chili spice. I add it at home and smiled. The apps were good and the dessert looked amazing. Lots of that was leaving kitchen.

Yelp
"Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean, so betwixt them both, they licked the platter clean!" It's a must stop if you're ever in Girdwood, Alaska. I Dip,You Dip | alaskan smoked salmon dip | focaccia crostini | house pickles - start your night off with this and thank me later!
