10 Recent Chicago Restaurant and Bar Openings to Know in August | Eater Chicago

"Ballyhoo Hospitality’s latest brings an elevated British gastropub to Glenview, serving red curry prawns, fish and chips, and vindaloo mussels alongside daily specials like a Sunday roast; emerald green, gold accents, and dark woods set the tone across 187 seats in the dining room and lively bar, and a large patio overlooks the North Branch of the Chicago River." - Jeffy Mai

This was our first time at Jackman, we sat outside on the patio on a perfect Autumn day. We ordered several small plate and two large plates. Everything we ordered was very good but the Brussels were fantastic. We definitely would recommend ordering them for the table or maybe ordering two for the table when you stop by.

Google
I give them a three which I think is very fair, considering our circumstances. We had to wait a long time to get in even though we had a reservation. It was extremely crowded and because it is so open it was so noisy. You couldn’t hear the person across the table talk. I like the way that Hackney has rooms and it breaks up the noise. I had the fish and chips and it was the best I’ve ever had in my life. Cod is not a light fish, but somehow they made it taste super super light and fluffy. It was perfectly cooked in a unique way deep fried super delicious and extremely large portion. The only thing it comes with is fries of course it’s fish and chips and the fries portion was small but the amount of fish you get more than makes up for that. Some restaurants give you a lot of fries and not much fish. This is the opposite of that so I guess it’s a good thing but I mean super super delicious the best I’ve ever had in my life. My wife had schnitzel and I was thinking it would be like German schnitzel, but she knew it would not because it’s a British style restaurant so she knew it would be different. We’re both glad they don’t use veal that usually taste better but that’s baby cows and we don’t eat veal. It was made of pork and she said they needed to use a different card and they need to pound the meat and it would be a lot better. My wife is very picky about meat being overcooked and dry. She said it was exceptionally exceptionally dry. It was one of the worst dinners. She said she’s had in five years. The spastel so which is a German pasta really wasn’t the way it should be and wasn’t really a German pasta. I guess that also makes sense, but they put it on top of the breaded meat which then made the breading be kind of soggy. She said she would never recommend eating there and I actually would recommend eating there but only get the fish and chips it’ll be the best you’ve ever had in your life. We had an appetizer salad and we’re not even sure what it was but it was so super delicious. My wife thought it was some type of wrapped lettuce, but to me it seemed somehow they took the skin off of an apple and then took an outer ring and then made a leaf out of it and put stuff in that we’re not sure but it definitely had apples chopped up in it. We’ve never had anything like it in our life and it’s super super crazy delicious.

Had dinner here last night. Since it’s a British-style spot, I wasn’t expecting too much at first, but I figured it might have an American twist—and it actually turned out really good. Most of the food was solid, and the fish and chips were the star. Honestly, it was even better than the Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips I had in Vegas. If I could make one suggestion, I wish there were a few more dipping sauce options for the fish and chips. Other than that, everything was on point. The server was super friendly, the food came out fast, and the vibe was great. It was my first visit, but I’m already planning to come back and try more dishes. Really glad this place opened in Glenview. Yard House better watch out. 😄

Google
Great addition to glenview, delicious food and wonderful service! Loved the flat iron steak, Brussels, chips and dip, burger, duck confit tacos and frozen mud pie! Will definitely be back to try other items!

Google
Loved our dinner here. All of the staff was fantastic and we felt cared for but not bothered. The food was delicious (special callout to the short rib agnolotti). We got the cheddar puffs snack and the red currant jam did not disappoint. The duck confit tacos were super flavorful. The short rib agnolotti was perfection. Cherries Jubilee was well balanced and plenty of cherries. The sticky toffee pudding was on the authentic treacle-y side, not very sweet. (If I ordered it again I would ask for the vanilla ice cream instead of buttermilk to add a hint of sweetness). A lovely night out and can’t wait to go again!

Google
So glad to have Jackman & Co. in the area. What a breath of fresh air as far as dining options in Glenview! We had such a lovely meal and experience. Everything we tried was fantastic—the brussels sprouts, pigs in a blanket, short rib agnolotti, and roast beef sliders. Its hard to choose a favorite dish. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the vibe is inviting and cozy. Definitely a great date night spot but can also be a good option for a nicer family dinner. The bar is fantastic, and the drinks we ordered were delicious. Don't skip on dessert either because the frozen mud pie was so good. There are so many things we wanted to try but didn't have the chance to, so we'll definitely be back!

Google
Very cozy place for a date night. It was very busy on a Friday afternoon. Went early to avoid the line since we didnt make a reservation. 5:34pm when we got there with a 45 mins wait time for outdoor seating but received a text at 5:58 pm that our seats were ready. There is a very nice bar to enjoy while waiting. Food is really good. Highly recommend the swedish meatballs with a nice crispy buttery bread. My husband had fish and chips, breading was not too thick and fries was crispy when served. Had the Red Curry Prawns (served 6 pcs of prawns) with jasmine rice with was tasty. Highly recommend the sticky toffee pudding. The pudding has a consistency of a cake (they said its the European pudding) with ice cream and toasted sesame seed caramelized wafer on top. Delicious!

Google
Came in for Dad’s birthday (they greeted him by name with a happy birthday on the menus)….. Everything was delicious and everyone was lovely (we even got to watch the Bears game during the meal).... We’re hoping they have something for Thanksgiving.... 🙂

Yelp
The food and service were great. Very attentive but not obnoxious. Will definitely be back to try out more of their tasty food.

Yelp
Pretty decent spot! It's considered a "gastropub/tavern" online, but felt more upscale. We sat indoors close by the patio and the breeze coming through was nice, they have a cute fireplace too which gave the ambiance a more comfy feel. All of the food was okay, but definitely very salt heavy. I had high hopes for the crab toast, but despite me being a fan of any fried food, the toast itself was super oily. We ordered a couple of small bites and a couple of medium ones. I will say that for two people, an added entree is a must next time because the portions were small aside from the chicken skewer (hence the category on the menu). Overall, we enjoyed our time. Our server was charismatic and explained everything well. I think the only major miss was the drink I ordered, I believe it was the Queen Doesn't Need a Passport, and it unfortunately tasted really watered down in terms of all flavor as well as alcohol.

Yelp
I would give this place a five for service and a 2 1/2 for food. Granted, I only had appetizers. But shouldn't that set the tone for the rest of the menu? We went in for Happy Hour. The five appetizers are half price, as are many beers, house wine and three cocktails. I would've liked a well cocktail option but I made do. We had the dates, the Swedish meatballs and the pigs in a blanket. None of them were hot. All of them were underwhelming. The dates had a sauce I can only describe as vinegar forward. I have to think they didn't cook down the vinegar in whatever sauce they poured over the dates. The meatballs were fine, but not hot. The pigs in the blanket were just OK. So we decided to order an appetizer that wasn't part of happy hour. It was the homemade chips with a caviar dip. The chips were insanely thick cut, cold, slightly stale and super salty. The cheese dip with caviar was cold and difficult to dip the overcooked chips in. I've had this appetizer in other restaurants, it just didn't work the way they served it. On the plus side, the bartender noticed we weren't eating it and he asked why. I told him specifically why we didn't like it and he took it off our check. We didn't expect that but it certainly caught our attention. It's a young restaurant, they're learning and apparently they want to make things better. I'd say the thing they have down pat is an incredible group of employees. We are former restaurant workers so we understand how new restaurants have to work out the kinks. We will definitely give them another try.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised when we booked this spot to try! It was pretty hard getting an RSVP even on a weekday so book ahead! We ordered a lot to try: Brussel sprouts: 8/10 very good, great for table to share Baked brie: 9/10 delish with the cranberry jam Crab toast: (no image) but it was 7/10 Fish and chips: 10/10 not fishy, well fried, loved the tartare sauce And both desserts were a delight to try. I would for sure come back again for their specials to try.

Yelp
Update: now three times here and really like it. Have tried several things on the (unique and perhaps a bit unusual) gastro pub menu and very pleased. Only criticism remains speed and expense of bar service. IMO, frustratingly slow and very aggressively priced.

Yelp
Jackman & Co. is a much needed addition to the Glenview area. I and many others were excited to hear about it's arrival, and it has not disappointed so far! I've been twice now. Ambiance is great, particularly in the bar area. Staff is extremely well trained and professional. Very attentive. Their happy hour deals are some of the best in the area. Menu is thoughtful and everything I've had so far is great. Highly recommend.

Yelp
What a great spot! This is a wonderful new addition to the area. I had such a great dinner on a random Thursday. The service is amazing, everyone was helpful and attentive. We sat outside but the interior is very classy. Can't go wrong with this spot for drinks or dinner. I'm excited to make this a regular spot for friends and family.

Yelp
Fantastic new restaurant in the heart of downtown Glenview. You can swing by for dinner or just stop in for drink. If you're lucky, you can sit by the fireplace. The staff is very friendly and it gives off a fun gastropub vibe.

Yelp
This is my second review of Jackman & Co. Today, I went with two friends to attend happy hour. My one friend is wheelchair bound and unable to sit in a high top chair. I phoned 4 times during the day to ask if this is an issue and how can we be seated for happy hour. No one phoned back. I already had a bad experience with my first visit and thought, oh no, here we go again. We arrived and the service was spectacular. We were told to sit wherever we wanted and we would be able to order off the happy hour menu. Our server, Jarod (I hope I spelled his name right), was unbelievable. The happy hour appetizers were wonderful. We also ordered a goat cheese tart that was amazing. This visit certainly made up for the last one. This restaurant is beautifully decorated and very warm. Not sure I will return for dinner. I am looking forward to their lunch menu. Going for happy hour was a good choice.

Yelp
The service at Jackman's deserves a big shout-out, as the servers have to rectify bar and food errors, and they do it with class, grace and a smile. Food is ok; the menu is a bit hit or miss. The salad offered was very heavy on raw onions, which wasn't great. The short rib shepherd's pie sounded amazing, but unfortunately it was short on actual meet. And had only small drops of potatoes, which was quite different and disappointing. Appetizers fared a bit better for our group, but overall it was just an "ok" meal. Hope to return when they get the menu figured out.

Yelp
Food was good, Service was terrible. Waited several minutes to be acknowledged then at least 15 minutes for each drink, server had a strange excuse for everything that went wrong, but the worst part is, their drinks are watered down! Bourbon neat should not be vanilla color. Would have been nice if a manager spoke to us after drinks were sent back.

Yelp
I have to say that I was excited to try this new offering by Ballyhoo. I have visited all of their restaurants and thoroughly enjoy them all, except for J & Co. The restaurant itself is huge and nicely decorated and their bar area is really big and the dining room has its own bartender which keeps that side of the house flowing when the bar itself is busy. The menu just doesn't make any sense. It's a mix of English, French and Indian food with small, medium & large plate offerings but nothing melds. I believe that it is an attempt at a north woods supper club yet it falls short. We started with the Prarie breeze cheddar puffs. They look like hush puppies, but have a great flavor. It comes with a currant jam, which was tasty but belongs with beignets in my opinion. The chicken pot pie was hot and flaky and delish, but it was accompanied by button mushrooms on the plate which just didn't belong there. The Brussels sprouts were good but when asked about the "labneh" in the menu description the waiter had no idea what it was and came back with "Greek cheese". I had the tavern burger, because Forza Meats prides all their burgers and it was very flavorful but served on a "crumpet" which just didn't complement the burger. The vidalia onion relish was a big hit, packed with flavor. The waiter was difficult to understand . He had a thick accent and spoke quietly and had to be asked to repeat himself several times. The longer we were there the louder that it got and the lighting stayed dim as the sun went down. Valet parking only, unless you can find nonexistent street spots. I really wanted to like Jackman & Co, but I just couldn't get there.

Yelp
The Monday special was great. I love the atmosphere and the decor of the restaurant. I didn't eat outside, but walked out to check it out and what a beautiful spot next to the river. The service was good, the server was attentive and informed. Dinner was delicious. I can't wait to go back and try some other things on the menu.

Yelp
Excellent all around! Great food and ambiance and the coziest barroom imaginable. Well done!

Yelp
Devils on Horseback which are sweet bacon wrapped dates stuffed with white cheddar. A small but incredible bite. Alongside those we tried the Housemade Crisps & Dip. These potato chips were durable and not crazy salty wich is nice because that didn't take away from the dip. However, I did wish the dip had more onions to add more savoryness, it felt a little dill heavy. The Tomato & Leek Tart had a solid buttery ad flaky base with a hint of sourness from the goat cheese, I really liked this dish. As someone who is a huge fan of duck, I had to try their duck confit tacos. The duck texture was almost like a stew, and they use griddled roti to complete a soft and very flavorful bite. As a burger fanatic, I was told I needed to try this tavern burger. It features Iowa cheddar, their own take on a gentleman's relish, vidalia onions all sandwiched by their own house made crumpets. The crumpet is soft, the beef is super juicy, and the relish had some unique funk to it from the anchovies. I definitely haven't had a burger like this before. As for dessert, the sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Moist and sweet from the buttermilk ice cream, and a comforting dessert to wrap up the meal.

Gisela K.

Yelp
Excellent martinis the happy hour was really nice, the portions are not huge for the price, but the food was very delicious! The service and the ambience were very good!

Dennis D.

Yelp
Very good. Great, great food. Excellent t service. Reasonably priced. Lobe this place.

Yelp
Absolutely stunning space with incredible service happy hour specials are awesome. The food is a bit on the heavy side. It's good but not something you'd eat on a weekly basis. The apps are average could use some different items. Burger was awesome and draft beers great

Yelp
Food was delicious, I had two appetizers, the crab toast, and the dates. Both were excellent. For my entree I ordered the fish and chips. The meal was perfectly executed. The batter on the fish was light and crispy and full of flavor. The service was excellent, our table received appropriate attention we never felt ignored nor bothered. The restaurant perfectly captures the English pub vibe and the lit fireplace provided a cozy atmosphere. I would come back again.

Yelp
We started with Devils on Horseback, bacon-wrapped dates with cheddar, and Housemade Crisps & Dip, which had sturdy chips and a tasty, though dill-heavy, dip. The Tomato & Leek Tart was buttery and delicious, and the duck confit tacos were rich and flavorful on soft roti. The Tavern Burger, with Iowa cheddar, gentleman's relish, and vidalia onions on house-made crumpets, was juicy and unique. For dessert, the sticky toffee pudding with buttermilk ice cream was the perfect sweet ending. A great meal overall!

Emma P.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to visiting this restaurant due to all the hoopla and good reviews. However, the cocktail Modern Cure had barely any liquor in it, and the almond crusted hake was so sour, I got indigestion from it. The fish was sitting on top of very sour leek stringy mess. Maybe it's my luck, but I did not enjoy it a bit. My husband had the sliders, he said they were nothing special and not worth the price. I give it 2 stars for good ambiance and vibe.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Great service, mediocre food needs something more.way overpriced drinks for only half full glasses will try again once they figure it out as o 8/5/25 would not recommend much better places to drop 500 on dinner

R. C.

Yelp
1st week open so a few service kinks to be worked out...appetizer coming out after the main course is served. But the food was very good: brussel sprouts, short rib pasta both great. 2 big dings this the 3 stars...hoping they improve to 5 stars! 1. Service charge added to each check, really?? So cheesy to jab patrons with a charge to eat at your restaurant! 2. $23 basic drinks with very little alcohol in them!!! Bad vibe for a spot with a bar to service soooo light on the drinks!

James T.

Yelp
Just celebrating my daughter's birthday for a party of eight at the new Jackman pub in downtown Glenview. It was first time visit and the restaurant is great. Start with complimentary parking as you pull up. The restaurant has a wonderful English pub ambiance. There is a great selection of meals in 3 different sizes depending on your appetite.Everyone enjoyed their meal and we loved the creative cocktail menu and choice of spirits. Our waitress Kat was very attentive. So glad this restaurant has come to Glenview. You need to tell your friends

Michelle C.

Yelp
This is a new restaurant in Glenview, that offers exceptional food, service and ambience! I am from Las Vegas, NV visiting a friend here in Glenview, IL. I was so pleasantly surprised & delighted with nice outdoor seating, and a wonderful server who made the whole experience for a beautiful evening! The menu offered different levels of food items to choose from, great for sharing! We had a caviar appetizer to die for. We shared a gourmet mussel dish with a coconut milk broth with cilantro which was served with a delicious toast for dunking. Yummy!! Lastly, we shared an AMAZING burger served on a crumpet & French fries. Lovely wine, or any other beverage of choice. If you prefer to dine inside, it has a lovely, cozy feel as well ! The pricing was very appropriate for the incredible experience. I would highly recommend this restaurant & look forward to my next trip to Glenview!

Sharon D.

Yelp
I've celebrated birthdays at Jackman & Co. twice now, and each visit has been wonderful. The food is excellent, the atmosphere warm and inviting, and the hospitality truly exceptional. A perfect spot for special occasions!"

Nancy M.

Yelp
Our three visits to Jackman have been exceptionally pleasant experiences. Staff - from front reception to roving managers to servers and all others - are so friendly and helpful. Food has been delicious - our second visit we had the off-menu London broil steak, which was outstanding. Third visit we had delicious brussels sprouts again, fabulous tomato & corn salad, short rib agnolotti, excellent British beef roast (daily special) and mud pie. Everything was so good. Energetic vibe, but not overly loud. Nice outdoor patio. We will come back frequently to try the daily specials. Highly recommend.

C O.

Yelp
LOVE atmosphere and LOVE having this restaurant in Glenview! The English pub fare is a little too literal. Need some basic options like great salads with grilled salmon or chicken. (like Sophia steak). Also, the wine list needs to be extended and the beer list as well. Once menu is tweaked, I know Jackmans will do really well! Glad they are here!

Salty S.

Yelp
Food was great. Service even better. One downside. The young valets were arrogant and acted like they were superior to us. We almost left before we entered the restaurant. We had some questions and they treated us like we were peasants. I am a 42 year old military veteran and expected to be treated better. Even after the meal, after they delivered the vehicle, we thanked the young man and all he did was give a nod - didn't even say thank you or your welcome.

Joe K.

Yelp
The only shortcoming was the waiter,Brought the same drink twice without the garnish.

Lauren G.

Yelp
The food is excellent and the service is great! Very cozy and beautiful inside! I have been twice and definitely will continue to keep going, so many great menu options I can't wait to try!

Carol B.

Yelp
Fun and lively happy hour with well-priced specials. Especially enjoyed the Angels on horseback and cheddar puffs. Service was attentive. Take advantage of complimentary valet parking because if you park in the lot across the street, you will be towed. I was.

Diann L.

Yelp
Fish (hake) is not their bright spot, slightly overdone and fairly tasteless. Ceviche was really good, filled with shrimp and lobster meat, but not enough of it. The chips surrounding it were too thick and hard to chew. Service was really good and fast. Decor is very pleasant, but way too noisy. Will wait a couple of months before trying again.

Kelly B.

Yelp
Service was outstanding. Food, ambiance and overall menu were very good. Biggest complaint. Wine list not great - verging on non existent. Very happy to see a new addition to the Glenview restaurant scene. Add more variety to your wine list, and you're a solid 5 star.

Al S.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Jackman & Co, and it was to celebrate a birthday. They were kind to have printed the birthday girl's name on the menu wishing her a happy birthday. This was followed by a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. A nice touch all around. The restaurant consists of three dining areas: one in the bar area, a larger dining room that reminded me of dining in a lodge more than a pub, and outdoor seating. Each had a different feel. The restaurant is at times uncomfortably noisy no matter where you sit. Our waitress was excellent and very helpful. We had the crab toast appetizer-excellent crab salad served on buttery toast. We shared an excellent butter lettuce salad that was perfectly dressed. My wife had the short rib stuffed pasta. Also very tasty with the short rib not lost in the pasta. I had the fish and chips. The batter was perfectly fried but the fish was too salty. The chips were thick potato slices. Nothing special but tasted good with a dash of malt vinegar served on the side. For dessert we shared a scoop of chocolate malt ice cream. Too sweet and not enough chocolate in the ice cream to be able to taste a "chocolate malt." All in all a bit disappointing from this excellent restaurant group that also has in its stable Pomeroy and Sophia Steak. Both of those are five star eateries. Unfortunately I can only give Jackman & co. three stars as when all is said and done a very average take on a British pub.

Kathleen H.

Yelp
Jackmans is a new restaurant located in Glenview. It's much needed because there aren't enough restaurants in this area. My family and I went for the first time last week. It was a very busy place with nice atmosphere. It primarily serves tasting plates. The prices are slightly above the average and the taste was fairly good. Our problem came with service. It was dreadful. We waited a very long time for a server to initially come to our table menus. We waited 15 minutes to get our first drink. It took numerous request to the server in order to get a second beer for one of the guests with us.We never got our ordered coffee after the meal was over. And no one came to our table to see if we needed anything more during our dining process. The service quality affected our eating experience. I know it's a new restaurant so I'll give it one more chance. Or recommendation is to work on your serving staff and bartenders because everything was extremely slow if not existent.
