A really cute cafe in this pretty residential area. They offer very Aussie-style pastries and classic breakfast options. It’s a nice spot to stop by for a coffee and enjoy the relaxed vibe. Unfortunately the pastry I tried was a bit too oily, and I will not recommend it.

We had a quick brunch here recently and ordered their famous scallop pie and <i>chorizo & gruyere</i> pastry, plus a glass of supermarket orange juice. The pie and pastry were just OK, but nothing special. The scallop pie was dry and the sauce was not that juicy. I actually had better scallop pie at one of the stall in the Harvest Market Launceston. The place is not big, but has quite good ambience as cafe. Customer service is also average, nothing to mention. You can pay with all type of credit cards with surcharge of up to 1.4%.

Must visit bakery when coming to Tassie! Heard lots of good reviews about this bakery so we came to check it out and we understand why. Tried their pies as well as some of the sweet pastries and it was all quite delicious. The raspberry tart was soo good, highly recommend that one. The meats in the pie were slightly dry but they still had a good amount of flavour and the pastry was made well. They have a LARGE variety of things to try so you’ll never be bored, might even be overwhelming due to so many choices lol. Service was alright and the inside seating area was clean enough but it does get very busy so tables may be dirty from time to time.

Had to try a scallop pie in Tasmania. Google said that the best scallop pies in Hobart were made at Jackman & McRoss. Spoke to Ollie around midday about getting one for dinner. He said come by at 4.15pm and they would cook it up fresh, as the ovens are turned off at 4.30. We did so and took it to Long Beach in Sandy Bay for an early dinner, enjoying the late daylight saving sunshine. The pie was delicious, the scenery tranquil. A lovely way to finish a beautiful day in Hobart.

We had to have some scallop pies and weren’t disappointed. Scallops were plentiful and a good mix of complementary ingredients. A complete lunch meal. There is also a selection of other great pies (rabbit, ham hock, mushroom, wallaby & blackberry) for the next visit.

Poor service and certainly don't welcome families. Good food and ambience. Seems over rated. Had to find a high chair and clean it myself. The curly haired girl was too lazy to clean it despite requesting and waiting patiently. In general, the staff looked uninterested on every occasion.

You can’t visit Hobart without stopping at Jackman & McRoss. The cabinet display is famous (and smells amazing!), but the sit-down breakfast is where it’s at. What we ordered: • Salmon Bagel: incredibly fresh and generous with the filling. • Poached Egg Toast: eggs were cooked perfectly (nice and runny!) and the bread was clearly fresh from the oven. It’s always busy for a reason. The atmosphere is cozy and the food is consistently high quality. A non-negotiable stop if you are staying in Battery Point!

We from Melbourne, this is my third time visiting, gave 5 stars last two times, sadly I can only give them 4 stars for the pies and coffee this time. We have 4 pies and 4 coffee today. The lamb pie is the best I ever tasted, lot of meat inside. The pepper Wagyu pie doesn't have much meat, too much gravy vs meat make it too salty and over favour. And the two scallop pies are not what I expected, dry inside, not much curry taste, each pie did have 3 small scallops. May be is my unlucky day, one scallop pie had few piece of shell inside, but they did waive the cost of that one. Coffee are average if you compare to Melbourne standard. Service is very good and fast.

Wonderful food. Great service and location. Very reasonable prices. What's not to like? Well, like most everything else in Hobart, it closes at 5pm. Would be great if they were open later.

The quality and selection of food here is amazing. We had the frittata which was delicious. Unfortunately our coffee was burnt but would still go back.

This is the go to place for breakfast and lunch in the ever popular area of Hobart. Really stylish place with old feel compared to all the standard coffee shops. Great pastry sausage rolls and cakes. We had to go and ate in the sun across the road but adequate inside and outside tables although it does get crowded. A must for locals and tourists in Battery Point.

This place always has great stuff. They sometimes run out of bread or croissants or whatever you happen to have a craving for. Go early. The staff is kind and very helpful. They are based in Battery Point and frequently fill up their seating. Go Early.

Amazing food! Customer service was absurd. Definitely a take out only place :) As we were eating, while other customers were also eating, woman came up to us with her broom and told us they were closed (15minutes early) and didn't let us finish our tea. Along with this we mentioned that we did not receive our full order and once we mentioned it to the server we still did not receive our full order. To conclude this wonderful experience I was handed a cup covered in dust, hair and lint which I decided to use anyways since I was to uncomfortable asking for a new one.

Go for the sweets, the savory pastries fell short in our estimations. There was table service though you pay your check at the counter. We found the scallops pie and beef savory pie uninspiring. The find of the day was the jelly filled Berliner. Red velvet cake was nice but far from fresh.

How could you not like this place!! This is the quintessential colonial bakery - oozes with charm in the midst of colonial Battery Point. Love this place. It has so many good things to try. You can choose to eat in or takeaway - separate counters - ordering at the counter is easy and staff have always been friendly. Order what you like from the display - the meat pies are excellent with real chucks of steak / beef. They have their own tomato relish, which is an good compliment to the savory pastries. The atmosphere, the vibe, is friendly and full of old time charm. The coffee is good. It's that simple. It's a lovely place to have a bite or more - cannot be passed by.

As soon as I walked in the door of Jackman & McRoss, I was eating with my eyes! All the foods on display are mouthwatering and it's hard to choose just one thing...so we had to keep going back and back for all four days that we stayed in Hobart!!! AND, the coffee was good too!

Pleasantly surprised by the selection of vegetarian options. I loved everything I got! Highly recommend.

Last breakfast in Hobart. This is a gem of a place. A bit off the beaten track but well worth it. We had salmon wrapped scrambled eggs over Danish pastry, salmon wrapped poached egg over rosti and gruyere, bacon, chorizo danish. All good. #maneklady #manekeats #manektravels

This place is worth the short drive or walk from Salamanca Square as you will find the prices lower and the quality even better. Upon entering, you will find their takeaway section and bakery to the left. Loads of breads and sweet carb goodness await! On the right is the restaurant with two little bedrooms transformed into dining areas. A giant blackboard on the wall provides the daily menu. My party got the claypot with chorizo and beans, fritata and poached egg. It was good but the chorizo not especially spicy. The classic eggs Benedict was a reasonable size and tasty. My healthier dish of poached eggs, caramelized onions and spinach over sourdough bread along side rocket salad was perfect. Great flavour and the right amount. I would definitely be a regular here if I were a local. The only thing keeping this from five stars for me was the service. There was one waitress in particular with no patience for anyone. She rushed us through our order nearly running off and then I saw her give the same attitude to the table next to us. Other staff were more attentive given the busy time. Please stop in and see why the door never stayed closed for long!

Ordered salmon brie, scallop pie, pork bun, Nutella cheesecake and vegetables plate for 3 adults. There was a double order mistake for the cheesecake, we ordered one serving and two was served and charged accordingly. Haha we didn't know this was two portion as it was our first visit. Cup of hot water is extra charge at 1.50. quite pleased with the taste overall, especially the salmon, though the pork bun skin is tad too blah, too thick and hard.

During our first day in Hobart, we ventured here with the help of a Yelp search- the reviews seemed promising and we were all very keen for some fresh baked goodness. The lunch was truly flawless. The slow cooked beef pie- outstanding. One of the best pies I have ever tasted. The filling was delicious, the slowed cooked beef was so tender it felt as though it had ridden on the back of an angel's wings and the pastry was crumbly and scrumptious. My partner had the calzone (last one for the day) and my mum had the frittata, both of which were enjoyed immensely. Eager to try one of the many desserts in the window, we each chose something- and here's where the good review ends. The problem with offering so many desserts is that freshness is often compromised in order to make sure that there is enough of everything for the day. In my experience, some of the best restaurants I have been to around the world have small menus so that there is a guarantee that what is cooked is done well every singe time. My lemon meringue tart was very far from fresh- it had clearly been sitting in the fridge at least overnight so that the pastry was soggy and lacked the crumbly perfection I was seeking. The other tart ordered suffered the same fate though the brioche with cream and fruit seemed to be the best of them of the three we ordered. My advice would be to stay away from any of the tarts/desserts consisting of pastry-unless soggy is how you like it. Coffee and hot chocolate were great, though!

This is a wonderful little bakery come cafe. It is within easy walking distance of the Constitution Dock area, located in Battery Point, a quaint old historic part of Hobart. It has a great selection of pastries and some great hot breakfast/lunch options. The only drawback is that there is no flexibility with the menu choices. When I asked for an extra piece of toast with my poached eggs we were told that wasn't possible and was offered a bread roll instead? It does have excellent coffee!

Lovely bakery/cafe with excellent service. The cabinets of food look amazing. We had the panini with bacon, scrambled eggs (The best I've had in a long time), avocado and tomato. Delicious!

Jackman & McRoss is the best neighborhood bakery I've been to, including those in Paris. The selection of breads, pastries, pies and desserts are amazing. Full breakfast dishes are both traditional and imaginative. One may dine inside or outside. Prices are very reasonable and the bakery is located in the lovely Battery Point neighborhood of Hobart. Best yet, it's a local favorite.

I visited this excellent bakery twice on my Hobart visit & was pretty impressed each time. For starters the bakery is located in a very sweet area of Hobart, just up from Salamanca place (about a 10 min walk up hill) which feels like a quaint English village. It has a smaller takeaway area with the breads, pies & cakes on display & a large bright seating area with natural light streaming in from the large street facing windows. Everything is really reasonably priced ($12 for eggs benedict on brioche, $4.50 for a croissant with jam) & most importantly, delicious. If you're looking for something healthy, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for exceptional pastries & sweet treats, get in ASAP. Although that being said, the portion sizes were just right & I didn't come off any of the meals feeling over-fed. The croissant was maybe the best I've ever had- so buttery & soft!! We also tried a lamb & rosemary pie (served with house made relish which was delicious), a berry cream cheese tart (spot on, not too sweet) & eggs Benedict (please remember this was two visits). Everything was excellent! My only extremely small gripes was the Benedict had a touch too much sauce & the coffee wasn't the best I've ever had (but still good).

The interior and setting inside looks simple and reminiscent but the food are pretty impressive.

I came here as my last meal during a trip to Hobart as I had read many good things about this place, and had high hopes. While everything in the cabinet looked great our meals where pretty average. We got the scallop pie (duh) and pulled pork with kale and kumquat jam on pumpkin bread. The pie was good but we'd had several good pies during our trip and this was no better than the others. The pulled pork was a bit dry and the bread kind of like a very tough biscuit sadly as the flavours were good. The service was pretty non chalant and made you feel a bit unwelcomed. I did grab some pastries to take away and they thankfully did not disappoint. The cakes may seem expensive but you get a large portion perfect for sharing if you feel charitable

Baked goods were so good. I got a lamb pie, and a MASSIVe croissant. Definitely recommend you check it out.

The raving reviews are all correct. Super fresh food, great prices, awesome location (close to the market) with great views and atmosphere. Could sit here for hours just drinking cold-pressed juice and eating a baguette while reading. I wish there was a Jackman & McRoss in every town I went to.

When I'm going for an extended car ride I need to pack a buffet. I'm just that kind of gal. So a stop at this highly recommended bakery was a no brainer. Try not to be so overwhelmed and stand in doorway with your mouth hanging open when you first walk in (not saying that it was me who did that but...okay, it was me) by the racks and cases full of breads, pastries, pies, tarts and eclairs. This is the kind of bakery that when you order fruit toast, you're getting a small loaf cut up, toasted and delivered to your table with lashings of butter. The pies were delicious, the tarts and slices amazing albeit too large to consume in a single sitting. The muffins were also quite good. By the time I actually made it to Port Arthur I was so full I thought I would burst. I'm actually disappointed I didn't have a chance to go back for a sit down breakfast. I dare you to try and walk in to this Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory of bakeries and walk out with a single item. As a final tip, you're an idiot if you don't try the salted caramel and dark chocolate slice. I'll just leave it there.

Awesome pie here : we took the cherry cream cheese tart and had a blast eating it ! A bit pricey but definitely worth it. You can just come and grab one to take away or have a seat in this cozy atmosphere ! Pies and cake on display to choose THE one! Breads look awesome as well. Would definitely recommend this place

Great little place for some amazing pies and cozy setting. Staff is super friendly and the food was great. We got most of the meat pies - Lamb, Chicken, Chorizo. They were all good. Ice cream spider was cool too. Oh, and nice coffee.

Nice airy feel to the place, very bright and clean. The staff were affable, and very patient considering I had a screaming child (with her mother a few minutes' walk behind!) The opera cake we ate was delicious, and they had a good range of hit and cold drinks. A lovely way to spend a few hours!

This is like an old fashioned Devon cafe! But certainly serving interesting food! Have to try Szechuan quail on a lemon riccota smoked almond tart, very fascinating taste!

Should have listened to a local when they said this place was overhyped and touristy. I'm not sure if my friend and I just ordered the wrong things or if there's a speciality we should have gotten, but both of us were disappointed with this place. My coffee was weak and lacked flavour- I expect bakeries to have great coffee to go with baked goods but this was akin to the coffee you'd find in an airport kiosk. The bacon, avocado and egg roll that I went for tasted like it had been made off-site. The eggs were rubbery and the roll severely hard, as if it had been sitting behind the counter for several days. Ask a local where to go and skip this joint- not worth it at all!

When I first visited Hobart, Jackman & McRoss was on my to-do list. I only had one morning in Hobart but it was occupied with the Salamanca Market followed by a traipse up a long and narrow set of stairs to Hampden Rd (worth a visit in itself for the classic architecture) to this famed bakery. I was not disappointed (and continue to not be disappointed on my return visits since I've moved here). The cabinets are full of delicious and ridiculous treats, both savoury and sweet. The buttery croissants are as big as your head. Savoury tarts come with (for example) slabs of pork belly slapped on top. Sweet tarts may be filled with things like white chocolate and mandarin. Everything is delicious and the prices aren't ridiculous. I haven't yet dined in here because it's always so busy (another good sign), but Jackman & McRoss continues to delight and excite this bakery fan.

Two poached egg based breakfast meals ordered. One too cold to eat and was returned for a replacement the other was fridge cold in parts (but mostly warm and eaten before the cold patches detected). The explanation for the cold breakfasts ..."we don't microwave them". Good-oh.

Let me first preface this with prior to 2013, I had never been to Tasmania but Jackman & McRoss alone would be enough to convince me to move there. First off, lets start with the price of things. Where (in Melbourne anyway) could you get a full sized meal, drink and dessert pastry for under $20?! Secondly, the food here is easily food that you would pay more than $20 for. I went twice when I was in Tas. All of the food that I had was great - fresh produce, appropriately flavoured etc. The pie that I had was great, from memory I went with something quite traditional and it was easily one of the best pies I'd ever had. The "side" salad really was a meal in itself. All the veg. And there was the soup I got, beef and lentils, it was more like a stew and an amazing one at that. Then there's the dessert pastries. Fresh strawberry vanilla slice!? I'll stop drooling and reminiscing now. Franchise, but not, please? :)

Service can be a little slow and it's generally crowded, but the food and drinks are excellent! Seriously, their breakfasts are as good as it gets, in my opinion! And their pastries... drool... So good! In fact, make my sister bring me a caramel slice from Jackman and McRoss whenever she comes to the USA!

So the food here is amazing. This is a little bakery/cafe. And everything is to die for. Except the coffee. The coffee here was undrinkable. I literally throw it out. But I am extremely coffee snob. So I would not depend on my word for the coffee. But the ignoring the coffee. This place is worth the visit. The almond croissant was a divine moment, where angels sing for you. I also tried the slated chocolate and walnut slice. And yes it is as good as it sounds. Let's just say this will be a regular visit when I come to Hobart.

Okay if you're going to be in Hobart for breakfast/coffee/brunch/lunch/cake, then get your butt to Jackman & McRoss asap! We'd had a few people recommend this spot when we were planning a trip to Hobart, and I'm so glad we fit it in. The prices are so much better than Melbourne, everything we had was delicious and the croissants are about the size of your head. Do yourself a favour.

Great place to have a nice breakfast at. The meals are very big and well priced for their quality. The croissant I ordered was delicious and flakey not to mention it was bigger than my face and the butter to go with it was very delightful. I did not prefer the baguette as it was not traditional nor good. I recommend this to people who love a nice French breakfast.

When I crave croissants, "Jackman & McRoss" comes to mind immediately. There are three types of croissants here. Although all are excellent, I am addicted to the almond ones. These are so big that a croissant is too much for my breakfast but it is too delicious to be left over even a tiny bit.

I still dream about this bakery. We visited twice in our brief 4 days in Hobart which should tell you how delicious it is. There are so many cafes which either serve sandwiches which are good or desserts but this place has top notch fare in every category from coffee, pastries, tarts, to sandwiches. The best part is that it's an easy stop on the way to exploring the fabulous neighborhood in Battery Point. Do stop and enjoy this place, you won't regret a little coffee break while touring.

What a fabulous "proper" old bakery, with bread, pies, pasties and cakes made like they should be... :-) Absolutely loved it... not inexpensive, but well worth it... HIGHLY recommended!

We were incredibly impressed an this place should come up on Breakfast search as well. Although dubious at first as the meals looked pre-prepared in the glass, my wife an I both had incredible breakfasts. She had a delicious pie and I had a black bean, chorizo, spinach, poached egg deliciousness. Then we had some take away treats from the bakery. The choco berry tart was the best ever. We also had 2 loaves of bread which lasted longer than expected on out overland track trek. We are heading back when we come back through Hobart.

This place is a must if you are visiting! Super cute, I loved just sitting inside enjoying the fact I was in Hobart! The food was amazing - we ate a couple meals here and then took some pastries to go. I wish I could have brought a year supply back to the states, but alas I will have to visit again some day!

Easy walk up the hill from the markets into Battery Point. quite and quant section of town away from the tourists...Coz...

The food during my visit was excellent. I got the egg bacon avocado panini. There was plenty of each ingredient on the sandwich to make it a couple complete meal. Would have been nice to have some sort of potato side dish accompaniment rather than a sprinkle of greens on the side. Where they lost it for me was the display of coffee snobbism that is typically displayed in these types of establishments. I asked for cream and the reply was "we don't have cream, we have milk". I heard another table ask for the same with the same response. Coffee is best served with cream as to not dilute the intensity of the coffee by adding watered dairy product to your drink (milk). Do yourselves a favor, get your supply provider to give you full cream for your customers to have because that's what they want. It makes for a better tasting coffee. Also, lose the snobby attitude about your coffee, it's just coffee after all. Yes, I sound snobby about this but cream taste better with regular coffee!

We went on a sunny Sunday morning and there was a slight wait but it was well worth it. Coffees were excellent. The food was delicious and the croissants were unreal with homemade jam. Even the kids found something to like and didn't mind our second coffee!

Everything was absolutely delicious. If you only have time to visit one bakery or cafe in Hobart - make it this one!

Great bakery. Posh food. Good coffee. Get there early. And note there is snother one on Victoria but not open on weekends.

The food is simple but really good. Great if you are looking for a quick bite in a quiet spot.

You have a 50% chance ratio of good coffee and pastry here...I have order four times and out of the four times only twice has either the coffee or the pastry been good..not both at once..unfortunately its the service that's horrible and not the product....today my coffee was way to hot and watery...for five dollars this is unacceptable...go at your own risk.

Excellent food and treats. The staff is very friendly and helped me fuddle my way through what I wanted to order.
