The 18 Best Cambridge Restaurants | Eater London

"Jack van Praag was a chef before he became a gelato master, working at the likes of Cotto, a revered Cambridge fine dining restaurant eventually forced to close by COVID-19, and at California institution Chez Panisse. But since 2010, he’s kept things frosty, doling out the best ice cream in the city (despite some worthy competition from Sicilian specialists Aromi). The original shop, on Bene’t Street, is the place to go for flavours that range from the beautiful simplicity of dark chocolate and sea salt to boozy ice cream — say, Japanese whisky or Barbados rum — that comes with a shot of its main ingredient for some added pep." - James Hansen

Wow!! This gelato shop is the best I’ve ever tried! As I approached, I saw lots of people enjoying their gelato, either walking by or sitting nearby. The line was long, but thankfully, the wait wasn’t too long. They offer a wide variety of flavors that change weekly. After some difficult choices, I picked Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt and Coconut Ube, opting for a chocolate dipped cone. The gelato was incredibly smooth, and the cone was nice and crispy. If I return to Cambridge, I will definitely come back to try more flavors! Oh, and they have a mini print vending machine in the shop! I got a cute print, which was a lovely bonus! 😍

Google
Definitely an amazing experience but as long as you don't mind a bit of a wait..if you do, go on their website and pick the flavours you want as they have a queue jump window. You can mix and match with some unique and amazing flavours, but also follow their Instagram to find out the unique secret flavour per day. Very delicious

We saw quite a long queue outside and raving reviews. But unfortunately they didn’t live up to the expectations at all. The texture was more of ice cream than Gelato. The flavours were not prominent enough. We had the cold- infused coffee, milk and sugar cookies, and double pistachio. We tried dark chocolate and sea salt, strawberry and cream. Customer service wasn’t great either.

Good ice cream and nice to have a different menu everyday ! Quite expensive though and I find some flavors lack depth and flavor, here are the flavors I’ve had: Vanilla mascarpone- did not taste of mascarpone, I’ve had some mascarpone gelato in Italy and it doesn’t compare Miso oreo- nice but no taste of miso Hazelnut cookie dough- delicious no comments Chocolate raspberry ripple- very good, a crunch would be a nice addition Sticky toffee pudding- delicious NC Violet- barely tasted of violet, rather tasted of milk, would not have again Yuzu- best I’ve had yet ! It was delicious and would highly recommend ! Mango sorbet- another delicious one

Google
Really high quality ice cream, and flavours are innovative (I had the yuzu and strawberry flavour). It’s good to pop by and grab one, but do expect a long queue at the weekends.

Very nice gelato in Cambridge! When I was there, there was a bit of a cue but it wasn’t too bad. I got the mint stracciatella and it was pretty good. The place is just a small shop so it can get a bit crowded if people stand near the door. The gelato and serving sizes stray on the expensive side, though.

This is another spot I’ve been going to since my student days here—back when it wasn’t well known. The taste hasn’t changed at all. Still delicious and locally made. They don’t have many flavors, but the quality is excellent, and the scoops are huge. Loved it!

Google
The ice cream tasted quite nice, though the scoops were smaller than I expected. I liked the cone, but I don’t think the chocolate-dipped option is really necessary. They change the menu choices daily, which was a nice touch. We arrived early on a chilly day, so the queue wasn’t too long.

Yelp
A friend had high praise for this spot, declaring it her favorite gelato spot in the whole world, so I knew I had to try it. I came on a Saturday morning around 11am, and thankfully I beat a crowd of 14 students there for a summer camp. There's no place to eat inside, and in general, inside is pretty small. We actually walked right past it because the entrance was so nondescript. When I got there, there was no line thankfully, and the nice person working at the front let us sample the flavors we were interested in. I think it's amazing how their menu changes daily! I would have loved to try the pistachio, but sadly it wasn't on the menu that day. Instead, we got the blackcurrants and cream as well as the mascarpone and marsala wine. All of us agreed the mascarpone and masala wine flavor was the best (couldn't taste the masala wine though)! Next time, I would love to try gelato in their chocolate dipped cones. It's also nice that they are so flexible with scoop size you can get a tiny scoop for £1.80.

Yelp
There is a reason there is always a line at this gelato shop! None of the generic flavors here, and they change daily. After sampling a couple, we went with Salted Oreo and Blackcurrant. These were delicious, but so were the Stroopwaffle and Polets Breton, so it's clear they have many unique offerings. One scoop on top of a cone was more than enough to satisfy us.

Yelp
Small place , big on flavor! Superb gelato. May have a line but it moves fast. Under 5 euros for two large scoops. Very unique flavors.

Yelp
The unique flavors, perfect texture, and friendly staff make Jacks Gelato a must try while you are in Cambridge. If the line is a little long go enjoy a beer at the Eagle and come back. They bring the queue of people down very effectively. Some personal favorites of mine were the honey comb and raspberry cake!

Yelp
Both flavors were quite vanilla - and I had thought I chose the most outlandish options. Perhaps they're playing it safe...but rose nor whisky were particularly convincing or interesting. If I hadn't detected the slightest bit of whisky and the hint of rose every few bites, I'd have thought they gave me vanilla (which is not on offer). Best to stick with more traditional, flavorful options... I guess. Sucks I paid extra for whisky only to taste very little. Expect small scoops - texture was immaculate. I was just hoping to actually taste the flavors I'd selected.

Yelp
Portions were generous at this place. No real place to sit and eat so we ate it in the nearby mall. Service was very fast. Nice selection of offerings.

Yelp
Jack's is the trendy gelato joint in Cambridge, and it's worth the hype! They have a huge flavor list, including eclectic and fun options such as cardamom & rose; honeycomb; Japanese whisky; avocado, fig leaf, pine nut, candied orange, & olive oil; and EVOO, amongst others. There was a huge line when I arrived, BUT you can order on their website and then pick up at the counter in under 3 minutes, so I'd say just do that. Definitely check them out!

Yelp
Jack's gelato features interesting flavors of Ice cream! I was super surprised to see elderflower sorbet as I've never had that flavor in ice cream form. The burnt sugar + salt was delicious and the strawberries and cream was not bad. Their Ice cream tastes like it's made of real materials and has a nice consistency. There is limited seating inside so I recommend getting to eat as you walk around the area.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic gelato and a must try if you haven't already! Their selection of deliciously unique flavors changes daily, if I am not mistaken. I highly recommend their Coconut Chocolate Chip and Mascarpone, which are the two flavors I ended up getting! Both tasted authentically intense and rich, but also paradoxically light in flavor if that makes any sense! I also got to sample their Wild Kopi Luwak Coffee and Blood Orange Sorbet, which were divine! Hope I will have the opportunity to come back to Jack's Gelato again one day!

Yelp
The woman with brown hair working on the evening of 2 June delivered the rudest service I have ever experienced in Cambridge. I asked for one sample before ordering and she actually rolled her eyes before getting the sample spoon and stuck the sample out to me without even looking in my direction and yelled for the next customer. Then, when I paid, I asked for the 20% discount for local businesses as I work at another shop in town (also a very popular food service establishment, so I know that sometimes it can be overwhelming when it's busy). She was extremely rude to me about it and made it clear that she didn't believe that I worked there. I usually love going to Jack's Gelato but I wouldn't go back if I saw that she was working.

Yelp
I had honeycomb and stem ginger. The gelato was good and had the right amount of sweetness. But it wasn't any different from other gelato that I've tried.

Yelp
A delight in Cambridge, which at times felt like food desert. Very flexible as well, allowed me to put two flavors in one cup.

Yelp
This was my first time in Cambridge and my Dad and I were searching for a pub. I was getting kind of hungry and I saw an ice cream sign. Upon entering, there were a lot of people! We both had one flavour of ice cream: pistachio and grilled white chocolate. I can honestly say that it was one of the most brilliant ice creams that I've had in a while!! When we left there was a queue going outside of the shop! The owner was really nice and the place was very clean. I hope to come back to try the other flavours next time I'm in Cambridge. Really awesome, definitely going to bookmark this place!

Yelp
Jack's has more flavours than you could've imagined, to name some I've tried recently: G&Ts, whiskey, roasted banana... Coming down the store for a scoop has always been the delight after one day's work in the summer.
