Well........I guess we now know why WHATABURGER is so popular. Today I ate my first WATERBURGER at Jacks. So here is the breakdown. And this is coming from a Pompano Beach local since 1957.
We had to leave the house for awhile while the real estate agent was showing the home prior to our selling and moving to NC. We are moving to NC for a multitude of reasons, including the fact that every food service facility has to place the last cleanliness inspection on the front door....God forbid we did that in Florida, right? So I told my wife, a Pompano resident since 1973, lets hit Jacks over on Cypress for lunch. We used to go there often as teenagers before they, or their sister business in Ft. Lauderdale, had some sort of rodent problem. But that was years ago, and admittedly Jacks used to make a killer burger. Call it a bucket list stop before we move.
So we go in and order. First off......the staff is very nice. No doubt they are underpaid. But the menu prices....Wow! 7.10 for a 1/3 pound burger. An extra .45 cents for tomato and lettuce in a plastic bag......folks, Covid is a droplet infection so stop being so silly.......and only 1 thin slice of tomato of course. 2.75 for a handful of fries. Good fries, really good fries, but 2.75? The amount we received for 2 orders could have come from 1 potato. Actually, I would have expected the plastic platter to have been full of fries with an additional platter for the burger at those prices. Anyway, now we get to the good part. Of my review, not the meal :)
The burger.......it was dripping. Not dripping fat, but water. Lots of water. Yes, it was a big 1/3 pound patty, But this thing had to have been frozen, or iced, or whatever, and not cooked on a high enough heat to dissipate the moisture. My wife is an RD and knows just a little bit about this stuff from monitoring hospital cooking.
Don.t get me wrong...it was tasty, just very wet. Soggy wet. Bun dripping wet. We also ordered 2 unsweetened ice teas which cost about another 5.50. So for two soggy burgers, two orders of fries, 2 iced down ice teas.......I mean, seriously? How much profit margin do you need from an inexpensive iced tea???....27 and change for all that. Manomanoman! I asked my wife...should we leave a tip? Me being a softy at heart. Her response....are you kidding?
I get all the nonsense. Having worked at one of the major AIDS hospitals through the 80's, back when no one gave a dump about the medical staff taking care of these poor folks, or the AIDS patients themselves, back when the President would not even acknowledge AIDS existed, Hell, back before it was even known as AIDS, I understand. With all the lovely Covid coverage and pissing and moaning and whining and Govt. support..........everyone, from distributors on down to workers in every field, sees an opportunity to screw the customers.
But if this is the best a small business owner can do, here is my suggestion. Close your doors while things are good. Because at some point the public will wake up, or is it woke up, and do this for you.
