Michigan’s Most Iconic Coney Island Diners | Eater Detroit

"Venture west of Detroit to Jackson, where the Flint-style coney reigns supreme. Jackson Coney Island is believed to have been founded by two Greek immigrants from Detroit, before it was promptly sold the next year to two brothers from Macedonia Charlie and Atanas Christoff and George Todoroff. Charlie Christoff’s son and grandson, Van and Craig, would go on to run a competing restaurant across the street, Virginia’s Coney Island, which like American and Lafayette to the east, has spawned generations of rivalries among Jackson locals." - Serena Maria Daniels

Wow! What a turnaround! The food was great, the service is awesome and they really seem to know what they're doing. So much different from the last owners. I'm seeing repairs and maintenance that's been done. As well as new menu items going up all the time, the staff is on par with customer service. Way better than sooooooo many other restaurants out here in Jacktown. The prices are super fair TBH. I don't know where I could get the amount of breakfast food that I did for this price. Really? 2 people stuffed for less that $27 bucks? Holy Moley

My sister and I came in today and really wanted to enjoy a classic diner. The interior was cute and felt nostalgic. But when I ordered a full size of fried pickles and compared it to her full side of cheese waffle fries to share, the portions were extremely different. Ive never seen such a small portions size for a sharable appetizer for $7.00. Her fries were $9.00. There were about 7 pickles on the plate. The manager was friendly and came over to explain that, that is their normal portion size, and she did take them off our final bill. I just think people should be aware of that when ordering, since it is very small compared to other places. Other than having to get our own napkins from the bar, the food that we did eat, was good and the interior was cute.

Come here everytime im in town, usually during the day, this evening however i was not pleased. Buns were not steamed like they should be. Difficult to chew when your expecting to get a soft steamed bun. Had to deconstruct my coneys to eat them. Coney sauce was Luke warm at best. The cook was going back and forth to the freezer and pulling things with his hands, not changing gloves between trips after touching the fridge multipe times. And the decor fell on us when a hanger let lose and the Christmas lights fell and the decor fell on our table. This wont be my last trip by any means but I will no longer be comming here in the evening. Day shift only.

I grew up eating here and it was just as good as I had remembered. Very friendly staff and good eats here. I love the classic coneys and the fried cauliflower.

Google
I visited this Coney restaurant recently after noticing new owners and was eager to support a local business. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed with my meal. The coneys were so greasy that the bun was actually orange and soggy from all the oil. The onions had a strange, off-putting brown color, and I have no idea what they were cooked in, but it didn’t taste good at all. To top it off, the hot dog itself was burnt, leaving it with a tough, rubbery texture that was hard to eat. And to add insult to injury, the order of fries I received was so small it felt like an afterthought—definitely not worth the price. I’ve included photos to show just how greasy and unappetizing the food was. I really wanted to like this place, but the food quality was just not up to par. I won’t be returning and won’t recommend it to others. I hope the new owners take this feedback seriously and make improvements.

Stopped in for a quick bite, wait time was minimal (5 minutes). Coney dogs with fries, they have a HUGE menu. Fresh root beer! Honestly, for a Coney Dog Joint, it's on par with the very best you'll find across the nation. Give it a whirl and GET YA A GLIZZY!

Google
We had take out. The food is always great! They ran out of onion rings and kindly made fresh French Fries, and refunded the difference. The coney fries are the best! Add sour cream to them!! 😁

Google
Well guys I can't make this up! A long overdue review. These 3 coneys are from the Jackson Coney Island. They are an absolute disgrace!! Are you really going to tell me, Scotty P, this is what you're bragging about?!?! A weird greasy dry texture to the meat. You can't EVEN call it sauce and it had a burnt flavor as close as I can describe. And, why the heck did your awesome cooks "that could run circles round me in the kitchen" I believe is how you put it just slop everything together!?!? You should be embarrassed.

Yelp
Not fancy but real good stuff! Had a coney with everything great as always but what stole the show was the mushroom/ Swiss dog and had them mix some onions with the shrooms. Damn good!

Ernie S.

Yelp
Pretty good coneys, if you like flint style coneys. Very messy but in a good way. Prices were very good too and service was really good! Def recommend!

Yelp
great place if open, every time I go there and website says open there closed, drove over 1 hr and a 1/2 to be closed with hand written sign. "update your hours of operation"

Yelp
Welp, not sure what to fully say here. Growing up on the West side of the state I hate no real clue what a Coney was until I moved to Flint and really found out. Then moved to the Detroit area and had Detroit coneys. I then learned that there are these things called Jackson coneys. I have now had them. They were good. Interesting. Not Flint and not Detroit coneys for sure. I am biased. Made with ground beef and ground beef heart served with mustard and onions they were good. The hot dog itself is thinner or a 'skinny wiener' and felt different on the bite. The meat and heart mixture 'felt' dry but was flavorful. Onions almost felt minced and I could've used more mustard. Overall good. The place felt like a true coney and had a divey vibe but was cool and I would say 'classic Coney'. It was clean and the staff was super friendly and cranking. Hustling, calling on each other and having fun. Their other food looked fresh, plentiful and flavorful. I was there for the coneys so I could say I've had the Jackson Coney. I can now say that. *For the record, I am a Coney snob.

Yelp
Great food and great place to connect in JacksonMI. The staff was very friendly. I enjoyed the retro look and feel of the establishment.

Greg B.

Yelp
This place is still the same. And that's a GOOD thing. Sticking to the basic menu they do so well.

Yelp
worse carry out ever. Called the order in told in would be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived 20 minutes later they did not have my carry out ready not even started 9 coney dogs and 3 chili cheese fries over $45 and a $2 tip to the cooks. Waited and waited started saying where is my order it's been 45 minutes since it was phoned in and I'm RN on lunch break who needs to get back to pass my medications to my patients. I got the 9 coney dogs but was told there was no cheese for my 3 chili cheese fries costing about $7.50 per chili cheese fries. After 45 minutes I was told no cheese for my chili cheese fries. I was upset asked why I wasn't told when we ordered on the phone or when I paid for it 20 minutes ago. I was told they just ran out funny I was sitting there watching no nacho cheese was served in that 20 minutes sounds like an excuse to me. I asked for a refund on the 3 chili cheese fries. No one could do a card refund not even that nasty employee Destiny. She had another manager on the phone and still couldn't figure it out. Destiny then told me to leave no refund too bad your out the money to leave. I called the police and told them no I'm not leaving until I get my money back. Destiny slammed $7.00 on the counter very loud and rudely and said take your money and get out! I told this incompetent idiot that she owed me much more than this as I paid for 3 chili cheese fries approximately $7.50 x 3 equals about $23 with tax. It's funny shortly after I called the police another manager came in and refunded me my money. I will never go there again and neither will anyone from this nursing establishment. Destiny behavior was totally inappropriate but she also looks like she should be working in a bar with her tight clothes and tight top especially for overweight woman but she has tattoos and piercings perfect for a ghetto bar. Don't go there if you value your time, money, and food quality. All the Coneys were cold because their steam table wasn't working. You have been warned!!!

Yelp
Wasn't sure about stopping in... but oh am I GLAD we did! Hands down the best burger I have ever had. Friendly service, food was better than we could have hoped for and prices were great! We will be sure to stop in again when in the area.

Yelp
Great service! The owner was in talking to all the patrons and the people there see place was clean and friendly and the food was tasty, all at a reasonable price. I like the ambiance and the revival of the historic place! They do so much for the community and the food is really good! I love the shakes, onion rings and best of all the coneys! I'll be back!

Diane C.

Yelp
I love coneys but this place is filthy! The grill looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years. I don't know how they have passes inspection. Maybe they haven't been inspected in years.

Yelp
Food is always good here..the Coneys are the bomb!!...Little disappointed with the service though this time...nothing I hate more that to be ignored when I come and sit down with employees walking back and forth treating you like you were invisible...way to long of a wait to be waited on..we almost got up and left...a quick "I'll be right with you" would have been nice..the waitress seemed a bit inexperienced...when we were served the food was great..kudos to the chef!..the waitress did not check back after serving and I had to flag her down to order two more beverages of which I was already out of...she did not bring them and so I was finished and I canceled my order...besides the poor service the place looked unclean..there was a leaky ceiling with caution tape draped about the place...I've never seen Jackson Coney Island in this kind of shape with shoddy service...My brother and I have been coming here since we were kids...It's always been great..not so this time...I said I'm willing to give it another chance...my brother was very turned off by the whole experience...he said he'll never return...pretty sad.

Yelp
I believe Jackson Coney Island was remodeled under new ownership years ago. It seems like they've maintained high standards throughout the years. Daily specials and breakfast served all day. I went with my craving: 2 coney dogs with fries and a drink, which happened to be the special. Although it was busy, there were still open tables. Service was fast and attentive, including the time-honored skill of keeping drinks topped off. Everything was good, and Jackson Coney ranks among the best coney places in the area. I can't wait to try their breakfast! One thing that was concerning to me: fruit flies, or something similar to them. It's been super cold out for a while, so these things were coming from inside somewhere. There were but only a couple, thankfully.

Yelp
Total diner experience which I love!! I was greeted right when I walked in by multiple staff members. Counter seating and typical diner fair with the coney islands of course. Food was out fast and the service didn't disappoint. What's a good coney is like asking someone who makes a better pickup truck, hard to find a bad one. Can't say this was my favorite but it's not like I wouldn't stop in if I was in the neighborhood and order a couple.

Yelp
Great stop for Coney's in Jackson. Good prices and luncy specials. I've went here since i was a kid and I'm glad to see them around. A staple they are. A great place to eat anytime. Love the big white box of Coney's.

Yelp
We ordered 5 hotdogs and everyone of them was extremely soggy and mushy. It's cheap and it shows. They need to toast buns or something.

Latoria K.

Yelp
Every time I order from Them something is always wrong this time instead of my chili cheese tater tots I got fries I want it no onions on my Coney dogs And just Coney sauce and cheese and I got regular coneys with a lot of onion I took iback and I they steal messed up my order to the point where I had to get my money back I think I'm just gonna wait a while before I try them again

Yelp
Decent little restaurant. No Greek salads or kabobs or gyros like Detroit Area coneys but nice place. Good service and friendly staff. I had hamburger soup and a phily cheesesteak. Pretty decent.

Yelp

Yelp
They were all great as was the food. I had a hour plus delay as I waited for the train. This place is right in front of the station. Service "Kelly" was excellent and they let me stay warm until they closed. Steak sandwich was awesome as was the coffee and Rice Pudding. Place stayed busy all night. Thanks Guys!

Yelp
Amazingly affordable and delicious breakfast specials to be found, a two egg bacon on Texas toast sandwich plus hash browns for $2.99. It's a deal. Staff as friendly and hospitable as could be. Refilled my delicious coffee endlessly.

Yelp
I try to be constructive and not just not hand out criticism and I will do my best here. I have been here many, many times I have so many great memories at Jackson coney island. That being said please everyone that works JCI look outside at your competition Virginia Coney Island. Why are they so busy? Why are you guy's not? One is consistency of food quality every time. I can go into Virginia any day of the week and get the same quality of food, busy or not so busy. Sadly at your place I've been lucky just to get my order. I have tried and tried to give you guy's the benefit of the doubt I would make excuses to my wife for you guy's, I'd say it was a bad day or an off day it's a new menu, not anymore! I've wasted to much time and money. Your new menu looks great but sadly it's just a dream we've yet to get anything we've ordered right or even good. It truly is hard to say goodbye but I've tried to support you guy's. I've recommend to everyone that I've meet that was or has visited Jackson that they had to go-to Jackson Coney Island and I just can't do that anymore. Peace and good luck.

Yelp
Great omelets. Angela was a great server. Everyone was so friendly. The price of everything is so reasonable. Can't wait to come back and try the coneys.

Yelp
Good Jackson style coneys. Cheese sauce is good on the fries too. My son likes eating here.

Yelp
I sat at the counter as upon arriving it was pretty busy. Ordered the conys with fries and a drink. As 5 minutes passed into ten and I was watching the failure of the cooks to properly assemble fries, tots and rings onto plates I started to get worried. It took 15 minutes for food to arrive and they screwed up by giving me rings and not fries. Simple fix but shouldnt happen in the first place. Several to go orders were filled before my order and were placed 5-10 minutes after my dine in order. Dogs are from gordon food service I think you can buy everything they serve from gordon food service or meijers frozen isle. The quality of food is low. Everything was just average and service was on par with a fast food joint like steak and shake. Not impressed and wont be back.

Yelp
Not worth the visit in the least. I went safe and ordered the chicken tenders and they ruined them. How do you ruin chicken strips? I'm sure they hold the answers to life's other mysteries as well.

Yelp
This is my favorite coney island atmosphere wise. The previous owners remodeled it giving it a clean feel but also leaving a nostalgiac twist. Where they went wrong was trying to offer all kinds of hot dogs not native to Jackson. Jackson is the home of the coney and the new owners got back to this serving an excellent coney dog although they do have others. The only coney place I prefer over theirs is Andys but the diner experience you get at Jackson Coney Island just makes it a fun stop and something Andys does not have. It's the old school setup where you watch the cooks sling the coneys up. The rest of the menu is pretty good too, particularly the breakfast but if I'm being honest 90% of the time I go there it's for the coney. They serve an authentic Jackson style coney and I like the style of onions they use as well. If you're catching a train and have some time to burn this is a great spot to do it. Coneys and cheese fries are a great treat while you wait for the train to arrive at the station across the parking lot.

Yelp
The owners and menu keeps changing. I tried this place under the brand new ownership and was still disappointed. I have always preferred the superior coney restaurant Virginia Coney Island on the opposite street corner.

Geoff G.

Yelp
New ownership, great changes to menu. Friendly staff, couldn't have been treated better. So affordable, so delicious!

Yelp
I don't know where these guys came up with the idea that Jackson coney invented the coney 100 years ago but they are waaaaaaay off.theyr version of a coney is Loose burger meat sprinkled on top of ball park skinless hot dog with mustard and shredded onion.that would be a hot dog with Loose burger meat and mustard and onion.that is not a Coney Island.another shit place in Jackson mi.i think were done with Jackson mi officially.

Yelp
I'd read about Jackson and its history with the Coney Island. I was looking forward to the experience. In my 57 years, I've rarely been more disappointed. Arrived on a Thursday night about 6pm. The few other customers appeared to be either patrons or employees of the gentlemen's club next door. As for the signature coney island? Virtually tasteless despite what sadly appeared to be the main ingredient, an overwhelming amount of reconstituted onion. Bun was more than steamed, it was just downright soaked. That is except for the top of the bun which exposed just how old, stale and dry it truly was. While service was friendly, the restaurant itself was run down and dirty. An unopened bag of Gordon Food Service tater tots sat on the counter across from our booth the whole time we were there. I'd planned on trying Jackson CI on Thursday night and neighboring Virginia CI on Friday lunch before leaving town. After this experience, I passed on next days lunch at Virginia.

Kris B.

Yelp
The coffee was good, the service was great but they painted over the beautiful train mural! I was so disappointed. The color is a very unappetizing shade of red. The american fries were dry and under done and the texas toast was not griddle cooked but merely toasted. Overall it was a disappointment.
