New York’s Khaabar Baari Served a Glowing Last Restaurant Meal for Eater Critic Robert Sietsema | Eater NY

"We passed a nearly empty Jackson Diner on 74th as we headed north, a quiet contrast to the bustle of the neighborhood's vegetable stands." - Robert Sietsema

I took my mom here today for the first time and had a wonderful time. The decor in there is gorgeous, and the food is absolutely delicious. The prices are fair too! Our waitress was super sweet and made sure that we were well taken care of. I will definitely be taking my mom here more often.

Picture # 1 is a meal that was ordered medium rare. It was burnt and charcoal. George, the owner said they would provide a replacement, Picture #2 was a replacment also burnt. When requested by me to speak to him, he refused saying he did not need the job and would quit. This was a bizarre manner of dealing with a reasonable request by a patron. We will no longer patronize this establishment.

Greeted at the door. Table ready immediately. Server greeted us shortly after being seated and took drink order. Placed our drinks, we ordered our food. Food was brought to our table very fast. Portion was great, food was great. Server checked in during the meal. Would recommend to anyone. Paid cash, could have paid with card for a small difference in price.

I love Cherry Coke and Cherry Pepsi. They have neither so waitress added marichino syrup and cherries to regular Pepsi was delish!

There is nothing like a jersey diner. Visiting from Las Vegas we stopped here for lunch. Great food! We tried a burger, BLT, salad, corned beef, chicken fingers and fries. Delicious. Nobody was disappointed. Fresh ingredients for the BLT and perfectly cook bacon made my sandwich one of the best I've had lately. Thank you for having coke cans available.

Overall, lovely decor, staff, and food. The menu is large and has something for everyone. Unfortunately, we had a bug problem with the food. There were about three aphids on the lettuce garnish. Our waitress was very kind and accommodating about the issue, I assume she passed on the information to the cooks. Regardless of the problem, we ate our food and it was actually pretty amazing. The price point is completely acceptable for the quality of food, just remember to check your veggies.

Unprofessional and Inappropriate Behavior I visited Jackson Diner in Jackson, NJ with my family, and we had an incredibly uncomfortable experience. My mother politely asked for a side of bacon with her meal. The waitress, Kimberly, responded with, “Would you like it on the left or right side?” My mom, confused, said “the left,” to which Kimberly replied, “It has to be on the right side, not wrong side.” This felt like an unnecessary and inappropriate political reference — completely out of place in a diner setting. We were shocked. It created a very awkward atmosphere and left a bad impression on all of us. This kind of behavior from staff is unprofessional and unacceptable. A diner should be a welcoming place — not one where political innuendos are aimed at customers. We won’t be returning.

03/12/2022: Jackson Diner continues to offer Prompt courteous service and GREAT food at a reasonable cost! 12/11/2021: Saturday dinner for 2: Entrees chosen were Beef Stew & Baked Meatloaf. Portions were good size and very tasty. Service here is always prompt & courteous. Jackson Diner is a great local place to eat. 11/07/2021: Saturday dinner after 1+ years away. Service was prompt, courteous and the food is still delicious. Well Done! 12/08/2018: Dinner again at the Jackson Diner. Moved to the Toms River area a year ago and have eaten here about a dozen times. Food and service are consistently good. I have no hesitation recommending the Jackson Diner.

Yelp
Hubby and I stopped by because we got super hungry. We were sat quickly. Hostess was nice, waitress attentive, decor was very diner vibes. The location is odd - it sits in the middle of a shopping complex. Husband had the fajitas omelette with toast and home fries. I had the Jackson omelet with toast and home fries. We shared a big waffle on the side. Overall, it was bad. Prices were decent. Location is just awkward.

Yelp
Very good and tasty food!! The turkey burger with mozzarella cheese and the fries were so good and full of flavor! Cheeseburger, chicken tenders( kids meal) and especially their French fries were amazing! Our waitress was so friendly and sweet!! Loved the interior design of it and very convenient parking! Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Can't go wrong with diner food and the Jackson Diner is no exception! The wait staff were very friendly and the food was good too! They are kind of out of the way for me and that is a drawback or I would go a lot more! If you are lucky enough to be on S. Hope Chapel Road stop in and give them a try!

Yelp
We decided to come here for lunch after realizing that it's been a while since we came here. Daughter ordered the Florentine Benny Benedict which came with 2 poached eggs, spinach and feta cheese and served over toasted English muffin topped with Hollandaise sauce and served with home fries. She thought it was ok but not remarkable. I ordered the Classic French Toast which is challah bread dipped in cinnamon egg batter. I liked it but it was no big deal. Lastly, hubs ordered the Garden Omelette which has green peppers, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and broccoli. It's also served with home fries and toast. He thought it was ok and healthy. Eggs were kind of overcooked and he didn't think that there was much effort to soften the eggs. Service was quick. Place was pretty empty when we came here. Hopefully, they'll get more business.

Yelp
The food is ok they could do better the decor needs a update would I ever go back thare no not unless they make thare food is better and I read someone else review and I was shocked the owner should of felt with that rude waitress in stead of saying I don't want to hear give the waitress the tip first able if a customer dose not have to give a tip if the food is bad and bad service the owner and manger needs to take the reviews and criticism it very important if the business is going to survive

Yelp
Good only for breakfast. Low quality food and soup is just water. Used to be good. Diner in decline.

Yelp
I am up-ing the stars!! Hubby and I recently had to buy a new deep freeze for our garage- since our 25 year old one finally went kaput! I was toooo tired to cook and wanted something good for dinner but easy after a 16hr day, so heading back home hubby suggested Jackson Diner- I agreed- good choice. The one thing I really love is diner coffee, I am not sure what it is, or how they brew it- I drink my coffee black and the coffee here is so satisfying it makes me happy, and in all honestly I can have 3-4 cups and still sleep like a rock when I get home, go figure. Anyway- we were seated promptly at a booth and Hubby ordered Mozzarella sticks as a quickie appetizer for us to share and I got a side green salad. He really likes the Reuben sandwich here, I ordered the French dip, the dippy juice here is incredible, I actually asked my hubby why its so good here, and he said, "It just is". So, I guess that's the answer folks... it just... is! If you are in the area, they have specials each night and I can say that if you like short ribs, you will appreciate the short rib dish here on Friday nights. We usually run into quite a few people we know having dinner or breakfast here, and it's because it "just is" a sweet little neighbourhood diner that serves good food, by a great staff at reasonable prices and.... it makes you happy.

Yelp
The service was good. The food was good. However, when it's over 90 degrees, you need to turn on the ac. Even the poor waitresses were complaining. And since they had the door open, there were flies in the restaurant. That didn't go over so well with my 7 year old granddaughter!

John C.

Yelp
The food was barf, my dog wouldn't eat it service horrible!!!! Never again!!!! The place left me nauseated

Yelp
Yesterday my daughter, grandson, and I stopped in for a quick bite at Jackson Diner. The bill was $78.46 plus tip - NOT WORTH It! My daughter had a chicken pot pie, the whole thing was a bread bowl. $19 for bread with potatoes and 2 small pieces of chicken. My grandson had a burger that was burnt and greasy. I had a pastrami sandwich that was on a hamburger roll. The pastrami was cut thick and dripping in grease with melted Swiss cheese on it and fries. The waitress was rude and non existent until she left the bill and wanted a tip. I paid at the register, the owner was there, I told him the waitress was rude and he said "give her a good tip, she is a young girl". I said you are kidding??? He said I don't want to hear it and left. The food is horrible and dripping in grease! The service is BAD!

Yelp
It was nice to return to the Jackson Diner. They kept everything in tact. Very busy. The menu for breakfast was huge and enjoy the amount of items. My fajita omelette was very bland with some raw pieces of steak. Potatoes were good. The wife had a California Benedict and she enjoyed her meal. I had a taste and it was good. The kids meal for 8 bucks was a great value. Eggs, fries, juice, and ice cream for 8 bucks. They even through the bacon for free. It was not comfortable in there. Multiple people using menus to cool themselves down. Felt like no air was pumping though the building. The waitress was great and a good personality Overall I will come back and try something different. Just some minor things that can be adjusted to improve the review.

Yelp
We were in NJ on our way to Six Flags and we Googled a diner to get breakfast along the way. I can't begin to explain how this hidden Gem made me so happy I found it!! Thank you Google!! Located in a strip mall, the exterior is unassuming. Once you walk into this fine establishment, you are transported back into the 60s This is a beautiful Retro stylish diner. Their menu is beyond belief. I wish I could've taken pictures of each page, but we were on our way to Six Flags and we were just there for breakfast. This place is amazing. Service was top notch. Food was excellent Prices were awesome Ambiance Priceless

Yelp
Had a great first meal here! Very pretty retro vibe inside, the food is made with care and is cheap, it all came out quickly, the portions are big, and my milkshake came with whipped cream and chocolate fudge which wasn't expected. Not to mention it all looks great. Good music, too.

Yelp
Stainless steel & chrome, this is an old style diner. Very good selection of breakfast specials. Ham, eggs, and Taylor ham was excellent

Yelp
Such a wonderful little spot to go for a quick no wait eat. We go there for breakfast primarily and it's just the perfect diner food and the service is wonderful! So much selection especially their new additions

Yelp
We found this little diner while working in the area. The first thing I noticed was that breakfast is served all day. That's a plus for me!! To start, the menu is extensive. There are numerous options to satisfy any palate. I settled on an omelette, which came with potatoes and toast. I added avocado, substituted the potatoes for coleslaw and had wheat toast. My omelette was great. I believe it was a 3 egg omelette, which seemed huge. You really get a lot of food for very little money. I really enjoyed my lunch here at Jackson Diner. If anyone is on the fence about trying out this establishment, please consider them. The food is good and the atmosphere is nice.

Yelp
This diner is a reflection of the 1950s with its Art-Deco, using stainless steel to the max. This place is very upbeat and bright with a very cheerful staff. Tonight was Mexican night but I opted to get a portobello Panini with jalapeño peppers and mozzarella. This was excellently served by Rachel, a rather gracious and fastidious sort. I have been here numerous times in the past and the breakfast is also excellent. Prices remain very reasonable. You know there are four or five places in this strip mall worth dining and this is one of them. Check it out.

Yelp
Sitting here with my mom being ignored by the manager because he's too busy eating with his friend. The service here is atrocious and the food is not any better.

Yelp
If Zero stars was an option, I would select it! This is a normal NJ diner centrally located where I meet business partners from time to time. Food is ok, staff is generally ok. BUT today the Owner / Manager singled out me and my business partner to MOVE tables because we were sitting too long. I rarely post anything on the web; but today I have to vent somewhere. Upon arrival, we patiently waited an extra 10-12 minutes for a larger table so we could conduct a working brunch with laptops. The same manager / owner didn't ask anyone to leave from their table so we could be seated as waited patiently. I wonder why? His first approach I greeted with a smile. His second didn't end well... no vulgar language or tough guy talk; just total disappointment in his grasp of the situation. Let your imagination fill in the rest of the story; I am already losing cool points for typing this much. We won't be back and it's a shame. Thank the lord NJ has a diner every 10 miles.... Jersey Strong!!

Yelp
Stopped here for dinner after Six Flags -- was about 20 minutes away. Very unsuspecting because the diner is in a strip mall with a ton of stores and restaurants and you wouldn't think much of it from the outside. Such a cute place! Very nicely themed to reflect a 1950s diner. Felt like I stepped back in time. Small place but they somehow have tons of tables, booths and a bar. The food was delicious! I had the French dip which was on garlic bread. I really loved it. Meat very tender and juicy. There's so much on the menu to choose from which is typical of diners so I can't wait to return and enjoy the environment and the food! Perfect place to fuel up before/after a day at Six Flags, and better bang for your buck for sure.

Yelp
Came here today for brunch with three friends. It was a Sunday and they were super short staffed - but our waitress Mel was nothing short of amazing! We had the eggs Benedict, an omelette, the Belly Buster breakfast platter, and chicken fingers basket. Everything was cooked perfectly, we will definitely be back!

Yelp
Breakfast was pretty good this Sunday morning and our waitress was sweet and accommodating so we made sure to leave 20% for her. But beware the blonde waitress who told me she's a grandma. Her kids when 1 year old would never play with or drop condiments on a restaurant floor, she said. Apparently this stranger to my family who was not our waitress is comfortable dramatically interrupting a meal after seeing artificial sweetener packets and little syrup containers under a toddler's high chair. I apologized and we said we would pick them up but she was clearly dismayed at the travesty. After we were done, we picked up our mess, stacked the plates and cleaned up the table. As I paid her I said to add $1 to the bill for the condiments but she declined. She pointed out the principle. I said we cleaned it up. She implied it's the waste, I said charge me the $1. I asked if she had kids and she said yes and she's a grandma and she'd never let them do that. I said I'm a grandpa too. As I left the diner, she said "ridiculous." I wonder if I walked up to her and her grandkid on the street and corrected something her toddler did after it happened (since the condiments were already on the dirty floor) that she would kindly accept the criticism from a stranger. 1. The $1 at issue is hardly worth starting a confrontation with a customer. And I offered to pay it. 2. We cleaned up the mess plus made the dishes easy for the staff. 3. Toddlers are not automatons you can control 100%. Kids make messes. If he wants to play with some packets, no stranger should interrupt and try to impose their nebulous "principle" that is not based on cost or a mess or some harm to them. I realize her server experience has probably resulted in an uptight, rule-bound dining experience for her kids and grandkids but don't try to impose that on strangers. We will never return to this diner.

Yelp
My daughter took me out to breakfast for Father's Day. The food was absolutely subpar. I ordered the "Irish" Eggs Benedict. It was absolutely appalling. The poached eggs were so over cooked, to the point of the yolk being fully cooked (like a golf ball). The corned beef hash was not only over cooked and appears to have been reheated several times it lacked any seasonings and flavoring! I didn't say anything because I didn't want to embarrass my daughter, but I will not return and will not recommend Jackson Diner to anyone.

Yelp
i love to eat here every now and then with family , but in one of my more recent visits i witnessed a waitress i've never seen before started going ballistic on an innocent table just trying to enjoy their food. As they were deciding to leave and de-escalate the issue, the waitress continued to berate the innocent ladies and started more issues that didn't need to be there, unfortunately i will have to find a new place to dine at, as it ruined my experience for it indefinitely.

Yelp
Had another wonderful breakfast this morning. The restaurant was busy but service and food excellent. Please also. Note that if you pay your check by cash, they give you a 3.5% discount. Sweet.

Yelp
This is a vintage throwback to diners of the 50's. Chrome-lined tables with vintage Dupont designs, sparkle vinyl chairs, early rock n' roll & all the kitsch you can shake a marching baton at. The menu is classic Jersey diner, & there's a few local specials. I think, just about anyone could find something to eat. The food quality was good, & plentiful for the price, which is middle of the road. Not cheap, not expensive. The place is clean, & as I said, there's plenty to look at while waiting for your meal. All in all, a fun little place, tucked away in a shopping center. You probably won't run into Sandy & Danny, but, you might see an ex-Pink Lady or two, or maybe a beauty school drop out.
google avatar

Yelp
The Jackson Diner is located deep in the inner corner of the Jackson Crossing Shopping Center. Walking in, the classic stainless steel décor is strikingly attractive, and it is easy to get comfy with the notion that although not out on the highway, you are about to have a traditional Jersey experience. The staff is in black and white, and very accommodating. The menu has all the offerings you'd expect, and then some. I took a red topped spinner along the counter, ordered coffee and a breakfast sandwich and listened to the banter between the wait people. The description of my intended morning meal included double meat, eggs and cheese, on a hard roll. I admit to more than a little excited anticipation. Even the question of whether I wanted home fries with the sammy did not seem too unusual for a hearty meal. Yet, what was delivered on a large white plate did not match my imagination. While everything was doubled, the "hard roll" was plainly a misnomer. What I got was white bread shaped like a round roll, but with none of the texture nor flavor of a Kaiser. It was soft, flat and absolutely tasteless. Major disappointment. How they thought this facsimile of real food was sufficient to be served to anyone was beyond me, and clearly, that was what they provided everyone who went with this option. The same was true for the extra charged potatoes. Dry, mealy and hard to swallow, even with several shakes of Cholula Sauce and gulps of coffee. As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a good first impression. Jackson Diner let it slip away with poor bread vendor and bad potatoes. Beautiful surroundings only go so far.

Yelp
Recently I went to the Jackson Diner. I came across the Jackson Diner when looking for new and closer diners to review. I stumbled upon their "specials menu" and noticed they had German Night on Mondays. I knew, when I did go, it needed to be on a Monday for German Night. They also have Mexican, Greek, and a couple of other specials. It's one of the most unique menus I've seen in a diner. Atmosphere: The Jackson Diner is located in a shopping mall. Based on a photo, I wasn't expecting that. The outside appears to be just a casual restaurant, but the inside is a flashback from the past. It looks like a funky, fun, diner. Everything is metallic and shiny, and there are plenty of booths, tables, and a full-length bar. Coffee: The coffee was brewed hot and fresh, and the waitress refilled it multiple times. That particular day was bitter cold, so I welcomed a hot drink. The whipped cream overflowed out which made it fun. Food: As I mentioned, I strategically planned to come on a Monday Night for German Night. Even with the German night, there are plenty of other "regular options," and the Jackson Diner has every diner option you can imagine. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner including pork chops, seafood, and another page of specials that isn't "German Night." I decided to order the Brautwurst which came with potatoes as well as red cabbage.  Since I was hungry, I also ordered a cup of the lobster bisque. The lobster bisque was good and hot and had a kick to it which I really liked. I like all spicy foods, so it was a pleasant surprise. The German Special did not disappoint. There was a lot of Bratwurst! I had expected maybe a link or two, but there were 5.  The sauce was good, and the potatoes were juicy.  To be honest, I had never had red cabbage before so didn't know what to expect. It was pickled and delicious. It looked almost like shredded beets. In all, I really liked my meal. Service: Everyone from the waitress to the manager and the host were all friendly and funny. It was one of the best teams of employees I've seen. Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back? I really liked the Jackson Diner, and I will be back. Everything from the atmosphere to the food and service was great.

Yelp
How do you mess up a breakfast burrito? Got an egg sandwich on bread. Restaurant blames Grubhub, excuse me, I ordered correctly and you made it correctly. Not worth the money or effort. Never going back!

Yelp
Take me back to my youth.. first of all, I love the atmosphere.. really fun place.. service was fantastic.. wide variety of food choices.. I had an omelette and it was delicious. We sat around "BSing""and no one rushed us out.. great place to gather and have amazing food.. looking forward to my next visit

Yelp
Had dinner last night and ordered FISH AND CHIPS (chips were fine but the fish was fried too long and tasteless). I would not recommend it. My husband had the reuben and that was good. Service was excellent and staff is very nice. We go there frequently and first time I was disappointed with the food. Will return and hope next time the food preparation is better.

Yelp
Okay, the Jackson Diner is actually located in a rather nice little strip mall (Jackson Crossing) so it doesn't "look" like the typical Jersey establishment. They have done a good job with the interior and always have 50s and 60s music in the background. The menu is typical diner food and is actually quite good. I have been here a number of times so I think it is time for a review. Like I said, the menu is typical and rather large. they always have some kind of special at lunch as well as the usual dinner specials. Prices are good, service is top notch and they are busy all the time. I had a Cheese Steak Wrap with fries and cole slaw which was excellent. Hot, juicy and cheesy - not good for you but good for the soul.

Gary D.

Yelp
We've gone to the Jackson Diner twice now with friends this past week and have enjoyed a very varied menu, good service and good food. Senior specials a particularly good value. Wish only the best for them going forward.

Merin P.

Yelp
This was the worst breakfast I have had in years. The OJ was brown tasting like it was in the fridge for months, the hash brown potatoes were cold & tasteless, the avocado toast - bread was soggy, the avocado was over ripe, the shell of the avocado was mixed in the spread on the toast, the egg was like rubber. Nothing looked fresh not to mentioned the waitress was extremely unfriendly. Would not recommend this diner to anyone ever!!
google avatar

Yelp
We loved the old diner, and are so happy they reopened. My family loves going there. Food is good, but nothing really special. The other popular diner in town, which is way closer, has awful food, IMO, so good food is great. The new owner can be a little grumpy sometimes, but they treat the kids great. Added many new items to the menu.
google avatar

Ted S.

Yelp
We go there very often it's a wonderful diner and the quality of the food is excellent they have a large variety on their menu and each dish is prepared carefully best diner in the area

Yelp
I pulled up to this place and was confused and asked myself "where the diner?". The outside was in a strip mall but when I walked in the door it was so awesome and brought me back to grade school (don't judge a book by its cover). Not only was the decor cool but the food was great. The wait staff was attentive and was something a lot of diner aren't... CLEAN! I order the pork roll egg and cheese which was filling and served with a mountain of potatoes (not those skippy burnt shoe strings) real hearty chunks of home fries. The sandwich had 4 thick slices on pork roll layered with eggs in between them. The people I were with all enjoyed their meal too and I will definitely be back next time I'm in the area. Recommend to anyone looking for a nice and clean breakfast spot!!
google avatar

Timothy T.

Yelp
The ambiance and decor are awesome. Wait a minute, this is a diner, right? So what's so hot about decor in a diner? First it's located in a strip mall at Jackson Crossing. Not a typical spot for a greasy spoon diner. Not the location and it's not greasy. What they did was completely build it as a retro 50s diner complete with bar stools, stainless steel walls, memorabilia, formica tables and period seating. It all works and it takes you back (if you can remember) to those innocent halcyon days. When you walk in you notice how bright and clean it is. They must completely scrub the dining room down daily to keep up the look. No lethargic short order cook with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth, nor a soporific waitress can be found. Everyone from the hostess to the bus staff were friendly and actually looked like they enjoy coming to work. I didn't study the whole menu as we stopped in for breakfast, but they serve normal diner fare with a lot of specials daily. I ordered a pork roll, egg, and cheese on a hard roll; it was excellent. Prices seemed fair to me. No complaints at all and service was excellent. Recommended!

Yelp
About time a decent diner! Clean fun excellent service. Burgers are thick homemade and best sweet potato fries. Coming again

Ed T.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch last Saturday. We had three very different meals, a breakfast platter, mango and salmon salad and a burger with fries. Everything was really good, well presented and great tasting. Food was so good we went back later for desert and coffee. The "50's" vibe was well executed and the service was fast and friendly. Would definitely go back next time we are in the area.

Lyndsay N.

Yelp
Food is so-so. Don't get the rice pudding it's so soupy but it's homemade just not worth it. Food is small portioned. Better places to go for breakfast and dinner. The wings weren't good but what should we have expected from a diner.

Nick L.

Yelp
Eat here at least once per week. Everyone is attentive and food is great! Lots of options to choose from too so you can always find something you're in the mood for.

Yelp
We come through this area every 4-6 weeks and always stop here. Food is amazing and service is better. They always make me want to overtip! We had Jennifer this time - friendly, quick and attentive. Great Place!
