If you're in Abilene, Texas, it's worth it to make a quick stop to Jacob's Dream Sculpture on the campus of Abilene Christian University.
The design is in reference to Jacob's dream of a ladder (or staircase) resting on top of earth ascending towards heaven from Genesis 28:12: "And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set upon the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it" (King James version).
The story from the Bible is already amazing, but this sculpture is fascinating...
It features tons of stones. Bible verses carved into said stones. A set of stairs. A small fountain/pool.
When you're standing on the west point - as the path is marked by the major directional cardinal points - the structure of the stones forms a cross... if you stand just right. One of my photos depicts this.
The winged angels climbing the ladder at the top are probably my favorite part of this rather large sculpture.
Free parking is available nearby. We never had security or anyone tell us to move, but it was after all the start of Thanksgiving break (11/21/2023) and I'm sure visitors of this glorious artwork are given leniency.
