Essential Spanish Spot Ataula Reopens This Week for Takeout and Delivery | Eater Portland

"I saw that the seafood spot Jacqueline will begin takeout a day earlier with items like tacos, seafood buns, and ceviche, and that once dine-in service resumes it plans to take orders only at the bar, forgoing table service to accommodate spacing restrictions." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Ordered a western omelet with breakfast potatoes since I didn’t want to chance home fries (bad reviews online) and which I really do not enjoy in the first place. I assumed any decent diner would have more than one potato option for a meal that it automatically comes with. Before picking up my order the owner called me to discuss the similarity between breakfast potatoes and home fries according to his perspective and as a result of being unsure he gave me hash brown patties. I said that was fine being that it was the only other option as well as a more crispier potato option. During that call he said nothing about charging more. After picking up my order I received an email stating he charged another $2.14 for the processed hash browns which were below average to say the least. Seriously charged $2.14 more for fried soggy processed potatoes over natural potatoes without my consent when that was my only option. When I sent my in-laws there when they came into town they were not satisfied with the service and cost for the quality of food received. Still I held hope. On another occasion I was there with my husband and the food and the service were below average. This was my third attempt so three strikes and you’re out. My in-laws were already not planning on going back. Bad service, overpriced, poor quality and poor menu options. This place is unfortunately located in the town of Bethel which lowers the appeal and quality of the town. Such a shame - Bethel needs a better go to diner you can frequent or something equivalent. My suggestion is that the owner(s) close, get rid of the rats (according to a Google review I read after this experience), learn about food first and than reopen and learn about business etiquette so you realize haggling with customers for $2.00 is a bad route to take😉

Came here for brunch one afternoon, had our dogs out right in front with us and they brought dog bowl water. Quick, good service, cute town. Had good food here and would definitely return!

Been going to Jacqueline's for over 25 years. Hadn't been for a while and clearly new people are running it. Ordered ice tea and they said they were out; it was 1:00PM on a Friday. Our normal chicken salad sandwiches had half the amount as in the past; a thin layer of chicken salad between two pieces of toast. Wait staff was more interested in talking with each other than serving tables. Guy next to us never got his bill and finally just went to the register. Same happened with us. Sorry to see an icon slump so much.

Google
Traditional, old-school diner, a main stay in Bethel. Very solid food and a good value. Fast, friendly service. Everything excellent, nothing extraordinary ...except maybe the waffles which look like a breakfast party on a plate. Lots of locals coming and going, waving to their friends as they do. Loved it.

Carol Z.

Google
Didn’t like it. The pancakes were dry and flavorless. The spinach a mushroom omelette was also dry and also was flavorless. Completely disappointed. I won’t go back

Google
Ordered a waffle for desert with a whipped cream on a SIDE for the reason it don’t get saggy while I’m eating my meal . After she brought it with a cream on TOP by her own mistake I asked kindly to make another one as first one was saggy already , the waiter went and asked the owner and come back to let me know that I need to pay for BOTH waffles. LOL Loosing a local customer who brings you money EVERY WEEKEND over a 50 cents self cost waffle ! The cheapest! BYE

Google
I always love coming here. Every time the food is so good. I love their breakfast!!! The Irish eggs benedict is delicious , I totally recommend it!!!

Yelp
We're from California, visiting friends in my hometown of Danbury, and managed to have breakfast here twice during our five-day trip. This has always been one of our favorite places to eat whenever we're in town. The staff and customers are always friendly, and the food is fresh, tasty, and made to order. For me, it's also personal--my mom, grandmother, and aunt used to eat here often, so every visit brings back fond memories of them. I highly recommend this iconic spot in downtown Bethel. --Mike Ross

Yelp
I've been here a few times during the week as it is near one of my clients. Today (Saturday) I stopped in with my wife for lunch. We were lucky to find a parking spot in the street nearby, I don't think they have a lot to park in. I'd say the place is about 50% full, the staff were quick and helpful. The food, came out quick. The pastrami and Swiss sandwich was good, she had a chicken Cesar salad wrap and she also liked it.

Yelp
Great coffee and veggie omelette. Much better food than Elmer's. Worth the trip from Stamford.

Eric G.

Yelp
Food is generally very good, but do not order eggs Benedict delivered. The eggs are hard boiled and there isn't enough hollandaise sauce.

Alexander V.

Yelp
Service was extremely rushed. There says nothing about not being able to order off the kids menu but wasn't allowed to order off of it. The menu has multiple grammar errors that would lead you to think you'd get more.

Yelp
Friendly staff, great breakfasts, reasonable prices. What's not to love? Small but cozy, clean and comfortable.

Yelp
This place gets BUSY on the weekends! I popped in with my family for a weekend breakfast and was lucky enough to grab a table pretty quickly. We got our coffees and juices promptly and put in our order but due to the sheer volume of other people eating there/to-go orders it took quite a while for our food to arrive at the table. I opted for a waffle with strawberries and a side of potatoes - they hit the spot that AM! It's a good local spot to run into someone you know right in the heart of town!

Rich M.

Yelp
food and service are always top notch. best place in Bethel for breakfast! They always have great specials as well. Love that you can bring your dog and sit outside on the sidewalk.

Bay D.

Yelp
service was great but the food was awful. unfortunately hands down one of the worst diner breakfast i have ever eaten. sad, overcooked, unseasoned food. i was really disappointed because i went here due to all the great reviews.

Michael T. T.

Yelp
Good food, great service at a reasonable price. We ate outside and enjoyed downtown Bethel. It has been years since I have gone here. Definitely will go back.

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
My friend and I had lunch at Jacqueline's today. We ordered 2 omelettes and coffee. The bill came to $39,95. With tax I figure the coffee was $8 for two cups. We left $8 as a tip even though the food was not so great. $50 for eggs is a lot.. definitely not with that.

Michelle H.

Yelp
Just picked up a simple order of a sausage egg and cheese and one pancake Come home to find out there's no syrup no butter and no utensils Don't have any syrup or butter at the house right now that's the whole reason I ordered a pancake Now I have to go back and have them make a new pancake because by the time I get back it will be cold. Not how I wanted to start my Saturday The lack of just making sure what's needed was provided has now made me decide to try uncle Leo's It isn't the first time something like this happened It's is definitely the last Too many breakfast spots now available in Bethel for me to keep going here because they have been around so long Goodbye to the headaches of hoping everything is provided for an order Done venting Also no napkins I wish I was able to put no stars

Jc R.

Yelp
I've been going to Jacqueline's for quite some time and I have to tell you that the quality of food and service has changed drastically. stop going there for a short period of time just to see if maybe we seen some change full quality it's just not the same anymore. There's been a big turnaround on Cook Services. Just not the greatest anymore. Very disappointed for one of our local spots who used to be nothing but the best. I will Not go there ever again I am done with this place .

Yelp
Great food. Everything is delicious! My favorite is the veggie omelet. Big portions and great prices. Everyone is so nice too!!

Cynthia F.

Yelp
terrible service and it was so so dirty, the child seat was so sticky can't imagine with what!!!! NEEDS a power washing inside!!!!
google avatar

Gene D.

Yelp
Could be the best breakfast in our area. Had the Irish omelette with hollandaise sauce over the top. Both service and quality of food are excellent. A must visit if you were in the area.
google avatar

Johnny B.

Yelp
I heard such great things about this place so I was really looking forward to having a breakfast here. We get our coffee and it's clearly watered down. I was not gonna let that ruin my experience. So I ordered the hungry man. Blueberry Pancakes came out not fully cooked and had no taste and syrup tasted watered down. I ordered scrambled eggs with cheese. Eggs came out under cooked and two slices of cheese slapped on top. The potatoes came out under cooked soggy and no seasoning. The sausage was dry with no taste. I highly recommend going anywhere else for breakfast.

Yelp
As good as it gets. Great menu selection. Stopped by for breakfast and was not disappointed. I had the Irish eggs Benedict and t tryst wife had sunny side up with sausage it hit the spot. Everything was done right and the coffee was spot on. Don't pass this place by.

Yelp
The server and all the services were wonderful. It was a busy Sunday morning and we were able to get a table for 7, relax, and enjoy visiting with long lost friends...catching up on 50 years of memories! Thank you Jacqueline! Food was superb and I will always have that memory of your comfortable restaurant to cherish!

Yelp
Thanks for the vomiting and diarrhea from my power omelette. Waking up at 4am and running to the bathroom wasn't a real great way to start my day.

Yelp
I was in Bethel Connecticut to attend the funeral of a friend's 95-year-old mother last week. Since the funeral service was at 10 a.m., I had to leave my home on Long Island very early to avoid any traffic delays. Having made very good time, I was able have a leisurely breakfast at this wonderful hometown diner with an interesting menu. There is clearly something special about Jacqueline's where locals are known by name and "outsiders" are welcome. My effervescent server, Jackie, was most engaging, interacting with all the guests while providing excellent efficient service. My Monte Cristo sandwich was just one of the many delicious and somewhat different menu items on their extensive menu. Jacqueline's is a life-affirming place, in contrast to the impersonal fast food and socially isolating chain restaurants we often find ourselves.

Rebecca I.

Yelp
I have been coming back here for many years and the menu just blossoms each time. The people that work here take a great deal of pride in their hospitality and it's definitely a highlight of eateries in downtown Bethel.

Maybelin M.

Yelp
The service is always good here. I usually order salad or wraps both good . Order usually ready hun 10 mins

Yelp
My wife and I come here for breakfast about once a week. It's the best breakfast spot in Bethel, although O'Neill's is certainly good competition. My wife likes the waffles, which are crispy on the outside and delicious inside, and come with a healthy serving of fruit if you get the fruit special. I like the breakfast lover's special, although sometimes the bacon is over-crispy - i like mine tender, not the way most Americans seem to like it. Unlimited refills on the coffee and service with a smile.

Jack C.

Yelp
Simple, no-frills breakfast sandwiches - totally hits the spot. I had the BEC wrap, and I plan on being a repeat customer here in my new neighborhood.

Sharon S.

Yelp
After my husbands fasting bloodwork we were looking for an outside seating breakfast restaurant. We saw the reviews for Jacqueline's since we live in Bethel and decided to try it. It turned out to be a good choice. The food ,service and price were all excellent. We will definitely be back
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
Food was yummy and service was great. Would have liked individual salt, pepper and ketchup due to Covid. It would just feel more sanitary. Will absolutely be back
google avatar

Phil L.

Yelp
we come here for breakfast pretty frequently and the food is always consistent. hungry man specials are very good for the money... friendly staff. I only have 2 complaints..they are CASH ONLY...which means an extra trip to the ATM or use theirs in the restaurant (fee). also really enjoy eating outside during the warmer months...however recently there has been a bee problem...not really their fault should talk to landlord...but does distract from experience. would add that fifth star for adding credit card payment methods.
google avatar

Fabok C.

Yelp
I've only ever been here for breakfast, and they do a very good job on them! It can get a bit loud and crowded, but it's not a reason to stay away. Recommended, yes!
google avatar

Danielle B.

Yelp
The staff is always a treat when I come to make a purchase. They have a decent variety of cakes and pastries, as well as breads to choose from. The one thing I love is that their social media person is customer focused and does their best to showcase everything that they have going on at the bakery that day. I've never been disappointed in a cake from this bakery, and the one thing I love is that they are open a little later and take cards. Also, it's hard for me to find quesitos (cheese pastry) and let me tell you - their recipe hits the spot!

Yelp
Was looking for a diner in Bethel and saw the reviews for this place. Food is good and served fast. Wait staff is friendly. Was surprised that they only took cash though.

Yelp
Good local diner, loved the Pastrami Omlette. 1 star removed for charging for sour cream, even after I denied my side dishes.

Nor M.

Yelp
Great service and good food. The staff is so friendly. Plus during the summer I bring my dog to the outside eating area. It's as good as it gets.

Melissa M.

Yelp
My husband and I went here after a doctors appointment across the street for breakfast. The place was slammed. The booths are tiny, so don't try to sit in one if your over 200 pounds or pregnant! We happened to pick one of these tiny booths in the back to try to get away from the noise, as I sat down my boobs were literally on the table! The booth we choose was also by the back door which happened to be the table next to the bussing station the flies were all over us! We moved to a table that had just been cleaned and had a front seat view of the servers running around like chickens, maybe someone called in sick? My husband had to get up to ask for hot sauce and cream cheese. The food was ok but we would probably have had a better meal at a better price if we had gone to a Diner. When we were finished my husband again had to get up to get our to go boxes (I could not wait to get out of there so we could hear each other again) and our check. Just 2 breakfasts, a juice, and a hot tea, all came to $28 plus a tip and the server cashed us out at the register which is always uncomfortable when leaving a tip on the card so we gave her a decent tip but she didn't really deserve it. Oh well, next time we will go to the Stony Hill Diner.

Yelp
Eh. My in-laws love this place, but I was unimpressed. 1. White, wheat, or rye bread only. No sourdough. 2. Omlette was flat. Not light or fluffy. Very dense and custard-y. The pieces of bacon in the omlette weren't cut up very well. 3. Cash only. 4. Coffee was great. 5. Service was great. 3 stars for service.
google avatar

Joseph F.

Yelp
I Stop in not as often as I like but when I do it's always great. I like their twist on eggs Benedict, Irish style with corned beef hash instead of Canadian bacon. Super menu and they really put the extra effort into everything.
google avatar

Laurie I.

Yelp
Love this place for breakfast. they ahve great specials and the staff is very friendly. They also make some great cookies on the way out. If its cold . no not sit by the rear door as people come and go every few minutes.

Yelp
Went to Jacqueline's on Sunday for breakfast. We sat right away although we would Have preferred to be outside because of the beautiful weather. Our waitress was very nice and the coffee was deeeelicious. I ordered the pancakes which were nice and fluffy. My husband ordered the hungry man special with a side of french toast. He loved it. We will definitely be going back.

Michaelanthony D.

Yelp
Small town diner with great people and great food. My wife and I Saturday breakfast spot! Since they had to close for the pandemic we make sure to support them when we can with delivery which is fast and food comes out just like your eating at the diner
google avatar

Frank P.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast with my family... pretty plain nothing fancy or out the ordinary... eggs French toast bacon etc. all was mediocre. The only thing that was good is the outside seating on a nice day can't beat that!
google avatar

Lyn T.

Yelp
My brother and I enjoyed a lovely late lunch at Jacqueline's. It was nice enough to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful New England town and fall weather. The service was excellent, as was the food. It's great that they serve breakfast all day. While we enjoyed sitting outside, the inside is very cute.

Better B.

Yelp
Pleasant spot with some glaring omissions. Food is generally quite good. Very nice breakfast plates, lots of good smooth coffee, well developed morning menu. I've never had a bad breakfast there, but during the transition time, I tend to stray to the lunch menu. Lunch is not quite as consistent, usually sandwiches and burgers are pretty decent, occasionally greasy or otherwise off slightly to keep it from being perfect. Now the omissions. Just breakfast and lunch, no dinner, though downtown needs more non pub, non pizza destinations. Two entrances makes for some awkward table assignments when it's busy. Front half of the main dining room can be wicked drafty/cold in winter. Air flow causes the rear entrance door to slam with a thundering thud every few minutes. Bathrooms are cramped and access is awkward. No credit cards, strictly cash, whatever cash is. Staffing is polite but can be a bit spotty at times. Two or three tables allow awkward dining al fresco on the narrow sidewalk when the weather is nice.Parking is easy, especially behind the building where the slamming door is convenient. Baked items make for a nice desert to go. No TV's or wifi, no credit cards, strictly an old school, part time throw back restaurant. Bring an appetite and a quarter inch of cash.
google avatar

Barry L.

Yelp
Ate breakfast there on a road trip. Loved it. Food. Service. Ambience. All terrific. Got the recommendation from the local librarian.
google avatar

Annie E.

Yelp
2.5 stars out of 5 = just your average every day diner. I don't think anything was home made, egg salad, tuna salad, coleslaw all come out of big plastic food service bins. Same for the baked goods. That was disappointing eating that kind of food but it is a cute place nonetheless.
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
Just your average diner. The coffee was ok, the eggs were eggs, and the breakfast potatoes were not good. This place could be a place where everyone knows your name and that may add to the hype. But, no one knew our name and the food will not lure us back.
google avatar

Connor D.

Yelp
I saw an employee changing their babies diaper on the table 10 years ago. Ergo, I never went back. I hear their pancakes are good though, so two stars.

Matthew A.

Yelp
We come here at least twice a month for breakfast. This place has very solid "diner" fare and the coffee is unexpectedly excellent. The eggs and pancakes tend to disappear quickly - and totally - from our plates. The owners and staff are very friendly and attentive. This has a great small-town diner feel; very welcoming and also very kid-friendly.
google avatar

Michael E.

Yelp
I've been eating at Jacqueline's since we moved to Bethel in 2001. They are a great place for breakfast, which is served all day by the way. Only open until 3pm and they only take cash, but if you're prepared then no worries. The owner and staff are very friendly and welcoming and the service is always great. It can get busy on a Sunday morning, but again be prepared or have a short wait. Their omelets are very good as well as the huevos rancheros. My wife loves the fried chicken and the rueben. Portions are good sized and the prices are fair. The coffee is always great and plentiful. When it's nice out you can sit out front on the sidewalk and watch the world go by. If you're in Bethel, this is a great place to stop for breakfast or lunch, which for me is always breakfast!
