19 Best Dim Sum Spots in Hong Kong

"Locals love this Hong Kong mainstay, which was the first Chinese restaurant by now-ubiquitous Maxim's Group (arguably making it an important part of the city's culinary history). Located beside the Star Ferry terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui, it's great for a casual pre- or post-ferry dim sum with family or friends. You can expect consistently executed classics—like pan-fried pork buns, rice paper rolls, and barbecued pork—all at the right price, too." - Kate Springer, Janice Leung Hayes

The wrapper for the Peking duck is really special — soft and bouncy, not too chewy or thick, and pairs perfectly with the crispy duck skin and tender meat. The dim sum is flavorful and high quality, and other dishes were just as impressive. Overall, I’d say this place is worth the price. The only downside was the service. Food came out quite slowly, and the staff didn’t seem very attentive — it was hard to catch their eye when we needed anything. Still, the restaurant is clean and offers a nice view, which made the overall experience enjoyable.

We had a very good experience dining experience at one of the private dining rooms here. The service was the best part of the experience. We also had a good view of the harbor from windows. The food was typical Hong Kong cuisine. I liked the selection of appetizers. The rest of the courses were okay, but not amazing.

Visitors from Australia. Went here on the suggestion of our hotel. From the moment we walked in the service was rude and rushed. The tea and water was at additional costs per person and when we declined, the service further deteriorated from there. On the menu were cocktails. When we tried to order the the rude waitress kept on saying No. we ordered wine which she tried to upsell to a bottle. The glass of red wine was oxidised and tasted a little like vinegar. The food was very average. Edible but not enjoyable. The only stand out dish was the string beans and mushrooms that was very tasty. The crab with pork mince was overwhelmed by a pork flavour. There was no taste of crab. Even the crab legs were pretty flavourless. We ordered a beef brisket dish. Beef was well cooked but there was more fat than pieces of beef. The half goose was so oily and salty we couldn’t finish it. Was chewy and so boney. The views were lovely and the decor was nice which was the only redeeming features. If you have to come to this place, avoid it for dinner and maybe try the dim sum for lunch. Expect rude service, bad alcoholic drinks but good views.

Good dim sum with amazing view. If you want to discover TST and will spend time at Harbor City/ Ocean Center. Then probably here is one of best local dim sum restaurants.

I was quite disappointed — a lot of the dim sum tasted like pre-made food, and it wasn’t nearly as good as at other locations. The BBQ pork buns and BBQ pork pastries in particular were completely different from the ones at other branches — the quality was far worse. I was shocked to see that mainland pre-made food has started showing up in Hong Kong — it’s really disappointing!

It’s a nice restaurant in the very popular Tsim Sha Tsui area. Lots of tables available. Clean and well maintained dining area. There’s a big glass window that looks out to Victoria harbor. If you dine around 8pm, you can see the light show from the table. We did a family dinner and ordered lots of items. I found most of the items to be good, especially the steamed fish and seafood dishes. The sticky rice and roasted duck could have been better. The serving was good. The servers brought our dishes one after another. Helped us with managing lots of dishes on the table. Ensured if we needed anything throughout the dining.

Google
This restaurant is a restaurant that cheats customers. Today, the peanuts I received today didn’t even look fresh. My family and I didn’t touch any of the peanuts and the restaurant charged us money! The business you’re doing is close to deception. You are doing business in an unfair way. Also, you gave us a pot of tea. On the tea menu, this type of tea appears as $50 per pot but actually the waiter charged us $20 per person. This doesn’t even match with the price on the menu. Please avoid this unscrupulous store that deceives customers. The waiters have a bad expression throughout the process

We had a delightful Saturday afternoon meeting friends who had just returned from their extensive business trip across various cities in China. After experiencing the culinary delights of different provinces, they still believed that Cantonese cuisine was the best among all. Jade Garden, a restaurant belonging to the Maxim Group with multiple branches in Hong Kong, lived up to its reputation. The extensive menu, presented in a thick booklet, ensured that every dish we ordered met our expectations in terms of taste and presentation. One noteworthy aspect was their lunch hours, which ended at 3pm. In many other restaurants in Hong Kong, it's common for the staff to start vacuuming the carpet around your table and making loud noises while sorting out cutlery and plates, which can be quite annoying and make guests feel rushed. However, at Jade Garden located in Star House, the staff worked diligently and discreetly. We were able to continue our conversation and stay until almost 4pm without feeling pressured to leave. On the downside, the service was a bit slow, and there weren't many visible servers throughout the entire lunch session. Additionally, the floor in the restroom was wet and slippery, which could pose a safety hazard.

Yelp
We went here a couple of times for dinner in TST. Two of my favorite dishes in this restaurant is the braised pork belly and kudzu with fermented red tofu and the crispy barbecued piglet stuffed with glutinous rice. The latter usually required advanced notice since it is sold out pretty quickly. A few times, I felt the service was really slow. If service is better, I definitely would give it 5 stars.

Yelp
This was by far the worst dining experience, almost ruining my first day in Hong Kong. First, the SERVICE- absolutely unacceptable for a supposedly "fancy" restaurant. My friend and I (both from Mainland China) were met with extreme rudeness from a tall, slim older waiter. We spoke Mandarin, and while he clearly understood us, he **refused to respond in Mandarin**--unlike his polite coworkers. Instead, he arrogantly explained everything in Cantonese, not caring whether we understood or not. Now, the FOOD - shockingly bad for the price. The quality was **street-food level**, yet dishes averaged **HK$150+**. How is this acceptable for a "decent" restaurant?

Yelp
I went there for lunch recently while in Hong Kong. It was recommended by family friends and the food was quite excellent. I had siu mai, hard gow, pork rice roll, taro root, fried crab claws, roast pork and a special fried rice whose name I forgot. The menu is printed both English and Chinese, but a qr code is printed once seated. This restaurant is cashless takes only credit cards for payments and the host will print out your bill when you finish. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone interested in good dim sum with good views of the harbor.

Yelp
I can't believe there were so many bad reviews about this restaurant because my family and I loved it! It was one of the best dim sum restaurants that we have gone to! We loved everything we ordered. It's a very nice fine dining dim sum restaurant with a great view right next to the Hong Kong harbor. The dim sum is made to order. You cannot go here without ordering their Peking duck- the best Peking duck my family and I have ever had. They slice the duck into thin pieces. It comes with a thin wrapper that you can fill up with duck and a white vegetable. You can also order the duck minced mixed with vegetables which is also very good. Every time I think of Hong Kong, I will reminisce about the great dining experience I had here. Will definitely recommend to others visiting!

Yelp
I'm surprised about the low Yelp ratings. Sure, the waiters may be a bit brusque and they did forget to deliver one of the dishes we ordered, but besides that I thought dim sum here was decent. The honey BBQ pork went perfectly with the yeung chow fried rice. Their chiu chow dumplings were good, but I wish I had some soy sauce to go with it. We also tried the salted squid and spare ribs but I think Jasmine Place in Jardine House (also a Maxim's restaurant under the same group) does it better. Still, this is a convenient spot for dim sum as it's huge and it's right in front of the Star Ferry terminal at TST. Come earlier to avoid a wait!

Yelp
Our dinner was good, but because there are countless Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong and Kowloon to compare too, there was no "WOW!" moment that said to me that this place was more than a 3 on Yelp. Ambiance and set-up is on par for what you would expect a Chinese restaurant to look like (large, big tables, etc). The menu has lots of pictures, so you could point and order if need be. I was advised that this place was known for their duck, so we had that. I thought it was tasty (you serve it up in the traditional style on a little wrap with cucumber and sweet bean sauce) but again, not anything exceptional. My personal favorite dinner dish was a fresh fish and sticky rice concoction. We needed some more pieces of lettuce to wrap a chopped duck dish and they provided it for us, but at $20HKD, which seemed strange to us. It is lettuce and they clearly did not provide enough for the amount of chopped duck in dish to begin with. Staff was just OK. Not particularly friendly, not particulary welcoming...again, just average.

Yelp
Crazy looking at all the bad reviews here. Came here for dim sum with the family as everywhere else was closed at the time and day we went to get dim sum. The dim sum was OK, definitely not poor. However the service did suck. They forgot a few items we ordered but we were pretty full and called it a day. Would eat here again with the expectation that our food might get lost :')

Yelp
Disappointingly the worst experience I've ever had at a Cantonese restaurant, in the states or (more disappointingly) in Hong Kong. After this meal, I looked up this location of Jade Garden and saw that while other locations seem to have high ratings, this one is understandably low. I suppose this location is a fluke, but gosh the management here needs to do something about the quality of service and dismal food. Service was absolutely awful, food was mediocre at best with sky-high prices, and apparently it's common practice to be dismissive and downright rude to customers multiple times. Ambiance was lacking with dirty chairs and carpets, not to mention cramped spacing. Every question was met with either dismissal or impatience from the staff, and the one smile we witnessed the entire meal was from the waitress who cleared our plates. Duck breast with osmanthus: (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=JtzqYPU40-vu_LnYvXDHlg&userid=1ug7EtH4blOzzbqqkmkenA) Osmanthus is my favorite flower, not least due to its fragrant quality in dishes. I was excited to try this since I thought that the osmanthus would pair really well with duck, but there was zero osmanthus flavor. The breast itself was smoked and tasted more like ham, which I could have lived with, but the soggy skin and almost-gelatin fat underneath hinted that the duck had just been sitting in a refrigerator somewhere for a while. I was also confused as to why there were steak fries on the bottom.. they added absolutely nothing to the dish and absorbed the duck's sogginess to become unappetizingly watery potatoes. 1/4 Crispy pork: (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=DmdJLedZSxsIb2fA3J-06Q&userid=1ug7EtH4blOzzbqqkmkenA) I've had some of the best crispy pork, duck, chicken, and geese in Southern China, but this was by far the worst. For the asking price, I was expecting some seriously exceptional crispy pork or at least a bigger portion because I mean.. one or the other, right? The meat underneath the crispy skin was paper-thin and lent no flavor, and the skin on top had obviously been removed and reheated. Poached sea whelk with bean sprouts: (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=_7ch23ETBE8uXv_DwjPzcw&userid=1ug7EtH4blOzzbqqkmkenA) This was probably my favorite dish of the night, but that's not saying much honestly. It was the most visually-appetizing dish at least. The sea whelk was poached nicely, and I liked the pairing with bean sprouts and bell peppers and green onion on top. But coming from a girl who likes salad with no dressing and prefers pretty much unsalted everything, this dish was underseasoned. The whelk was poached and thus had no flavor, the bean sprouts were poached and thus had no flavor, and the overall dish lacked any distinct.. you guessed it, flavor. Maybe the chef just forgot to add the salt? Lobster with kimchi: (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=0NlRjSk_zAxMReC1eIEe5A&userid=1ug7EtH4blOzzbqqkmkenA) This lobster was not fresh. That's enough to spoil any lobster dish, but the glass noodles were also overcooked and the kimchi flavor was strangely sweet. I think it's dangerous to cook lobster in a clay pot because it's a protein that is easily overcooked, but because the clay pot retains its heat much longer after it's taken off a flame, it's difficult to control when it stops cooking the food within. The lobster went from okay to rubbery within minutes while the glass noodles went from soft to mush. I lost hope with this meal after this fourth disappointing dish and gave up taking photos, but we also ordered stir-fried pea sprouts with garlic, braised pomelo skin, and pork trotters in clay pot. The stir-fried pea sprouts were so overcooked that I had trouble picking them up with chopsticks. The braised pomelo skin was again underseasoned and presentation was lacking as it was cooked in a brown sauce and there were no garnishes or any additional elements to contrast the murky color. The pork trotters were a frustrating tidbit, as I asked our waiter twice when we were ordering if he had written the dish down and he had confirmed yes. When we waited over thirty minutes after our last dish had arrived (and after asking two different waiters to check on the trotters), we finally saw the waiter who took our order and asked him. He printed out our receipt and handed it to me, saying that we hadn't ordered it initially because the receipt didn't reflect it. With that kind of logic, it's no wonder the state of this restaurant. It took over half an hour for us to receive our check, which seems laughable because I mean.. we're trying to give them money. After we sent it back, it took another half hour to receive a receipt and only after we'd aggressively flagged down another server to ask about it (she also tried to wave us off by telling us we hadn't paid yet which is why the receipt wasn't there). Travelers and locals alike, please avoid this location.

Yelp
Good view , average experience, tableware is very ordinary, and the dishes have no special characteristics, and can not be compared with Shanghai's Jade Garden

Yelp
These guys need a more granular rating. Location: 5 Food: 3.5 Service: 2.5 Ok, so we are gwai loh and one of the few in this place, but still. Food started well as did service but it slid downhill. Perhaps we ordered badly or over-ordered, hard to know. We had beef with greens and oyster sauce. BBQ pork with red bean sauce, fried rice with minced beef and fried chicken with citrus sauce. Washed down with a Tsingtao or two. Pork and beef were delicious, and came out quickly, but the rice was a bit slow and they clearly had forgotten about the chicken. Wish they had, as when it eventually came the chicken was sooo citrusy and sweet we couldn't eat it - immediately dubbed desert chicken! The rice was tasty but really oily. Table next to us had Peking duck - looked awesome!! The view is fantastic, get a window seat if you can.

Yelp
Terrible service, totally dishonest and rude. We ordered dishes on their form and only pot of tea and one appetizer was ever served from a full meal of 5 dishes. For an hour after we ordered they repeatedly came by and warned Kitchen would be closing soon and did we want to order more dishes . We kept asking about our order. We then noticed the kitchen shutting down. They made no apologies and gave us the following bill. 1- Full meal of 5 dishes(we got one) HK$238 versus HK$113 appetizer. 2&3- Tea HK$35 (which we ordered) PLUS HK$45 for hot water. They sat is at a table for 12 but put everything as far from us as possible. We had to get it ourselves. In addition they added for various other things we did not order for a total of HK$476!! They were rude we didn't immediately pay the bill. They did the we don't speak English, Mandarin or any other language used on the menu. We had people who were skilled in multiple Chinese dialects so the dishonesty ended. We eventually only payed for what we ordered and actually served. Not going back!!

Yelp
Decent dim sum. Not the best but if you have tourists it's an easy option as it is right next to the star ferry. They have an extensive dim sum menu with something for everyone. So don't worry if your guests have various wants and needs No one comes to a dim sum restaurant for great service and this one is no different.

Yelp
We had great dim sum with new concept to us. Pineapple buns with jam. So cute and yummy. Then the rice flour rolls with crunchy fried dough. The service is to order only. Great food. Nice view of HK Harbor. View Would look great at night.

Yelp
Service is beyond poor, they forgot one of our dishes and you'll be waiting a good 30 minutes for just the check. Go elsewhere....

Yelp
Good Cantonese restaurant, nothing astonishing but neither the worst of them. Place tend to be quite crowded but that's pretty standard.

Yelp
Wow, I am not sure the reasons for such low ratings. We were recently there, a party of 10 people, for dinner. We had BBQ pork, Roast Pork skin, Gai Lan, Roasted Goose, Deep Fried Beef, a tofu dish and dessert. The BBQ dishes tasted good and the right amount of crispiness. The veggies were fresh and crunchy. The tofu was smooth in texture and tasty. All the dishes were very large portions and we could not finish. The dessert was good too. They offered us two kinds, one was red bean soup and the other the mango with tapioca pearls and chunks of pomelo. I tasted some of each and both very yummy, with the latter very refreshing. The restaurant has a fabulous view of the harbour and it added to the ambiance. I would go there again.

Yelp
Not sure why this place doesn't have better reviews. Went here for Dim Sum on a Thursday and the food was uniformly excellent and the service prompt and crisp. Particularly recommend the bao.

Yelp
Dirty plates. Dirty glasses. They had run out of half of the menu when I tried to order. Stay away!
