Jade Garden Review - International District - Seattle - The Infatuation

"While the atmosphere at this dim sum institution—accented by boarded-up windows, small nooks, and a lack of carts rolling around—doesn’t exactly hold a candle to the grand dining room at other spots in town, the lineup of delicious Chinese food is Jade Garden’s main attraction. Here, you don’t need any pomp and circumstance. You just need to order a lot of stuff. From overstuffed potstickers and sweet honey BBQ pork hand pies to smoky seared turnip cakes and rice wrappers plump with pink prawn filling, dim sum at Jade Garden tastes delicious, whether plain or completely drenched in your own custom blend of hot chili sauce and salty soy swirled on the plate. And with excellent walk-in potential, their hours being 9am-7:30pm daily, and electronic ordering, this is one of the best group meal spots in the city, let alone the ID." - Aimee Rizzo

We were in town for a sports event this weekend. We saw a lot of great reviews before we decided to try this place ourselves. The food we ordered to go was very delicious. They have good quantities, nice presentation, and great taste. I also discovered some 'secret' menus while I was picking up food the other day, we decided to go back again to try some new food items along with their Boba teas, and this time we dined in. Yep, both the food and service were really good per usual. The boba teas were really good and my kids finished them in no time. I would highly recommend it if you haven't been here yet. Yes, we will be back if we are in town next time.

Tried this place today to give it a chance from what I remembered being “unpleasant “ and I received a lunch General T’so chicken and it was NOT COOKED FRESH! I took 1 bite and it was LUKE WARM AT BEST! I tried to talk to the lady at the counter and she acted like I was making up stuff. She said “we can heat it up” then the thought of that turned my stomach... she treated me like I was nothing due to my “country work clothing” is what vibe I got. I said “Can I just order something else and she rudely replied with stating “I don’t know why you’d want something else if you didn’t like what you have and won’t let us heat up the food!” 😳 Okay… if I wanted to have “heated food in a microwave” we would have stayed home. So in short story, DO NOT EXPECT GOOD FOOD! If you’re dressed a certain way they will treat you like crap. You get 6 bites of nuke warm chicken and it is absolutely WORSE THAN 10 YEARS AGO! I told her we just won’t come back and her reply was “that’s fine” 🙄😳 Yeah, this was absolutely ridiculous!

Google
Honestly, everything was pretty bad... The egg drop soup was flavorless and didn't even come with crunchy wontons. That's just rude. Luckily I had a bag in my cabinet. The beef and broccoli was mostly just carrots and was drowning in water. The spring rolls were broken and the shrimp inside was chewy. The chicken wings were dry and hard. Octopus balls were the absolute worst I've ever had.. they tasted like some kind of chemical. Moo shu was missing the pancakes so that was definitely disappointing. Not to mention the extra sauce we got was in a crushed Styrofoam container and had gotten on almost everything in the bag. I'll never be back to this place.

Google
Extremely timely ordering and delivery including update from manager (!). Succulent taste…can’t wait to do again

Google
Not exactly the best Asian restaurant in town but not the worse. Highly inconsistent with portion and the way some of the food is cooked. They are prompt and the sushi is pretty good though. Not a bad place if you're in need of a quick meal.

Google
This food was sensational!! The person that took my order was great. They explained to me what everything was and what it had in it. And the sushi was the bomb. Well go back to eat here again.

Samanthah Rogers

Google
Not impressed. The food was cold and disgusting. There were some worm looking things on my brocoli that definitely kept me from wanting to eat at all. The lemon chicken was bread with maybe chicken here and there. The service wasn't good and we were made pay and tip before service. Honestly, the best thing there was my water.

Google
Allan, the pleasant bartender makes everyone feel so very welcome. You know you’re in the care of a master host from the moment you appear. He makes every drink with skill and care. You’ll leave happier than when you entered. And there’s food too. The menu is a bit long but he can help you choose. Mostly we go just for a drink but when you don’t feel like cooking, it’s good to go there. Service is fast and friendly.

Yelp
If I'm having or had a bad day, I order Jade Garden and it is instantly better. It's yummy and comforting and perfect!

Yelp
Location: towards the west of Lawrence. Small shopping place with several stores. Ambiance: Family oriented, but they also offer karaoke. Food: it is good. They offer traditional Chinese and americanized. I would go for the authentic food. Service: outstanding. Alan is very friendly and customer oriented.

Yelp
Terrible, I had been to Jade at least 5 years ago and it was terrible then. Poor service and food quality. With a lack of restaurants open this thanksgiving, we decided to try it again in hope of improvement but no chance. Visually the dishes look good but that is where it all end.

Michelle H.

Yelp
Excellent food. Left the table to use bathroom with half a plate of food, which I wanted to take home. When I returned, table was cleared off. Luckily they had not thrown out my plate, but rice was gone and the drink. This was after 4 p.m. on a Thursday night. Only 3 other people in the restaurant. Plenty of open tables! Why the rush to clear off the table? Please slow down.

Yelp
Allen is an amazing bartender. Whenever I'm in town, I come here. I've never had anything less than a delicious meal. Want a nice bar to go to? Check. Need a private karaoke room to show off your beautiful voice? Check. Are you interested in being daring and trying some classic Asian dishes while your friends want sesame or orange chicken? Check! I always order the crispy pork intestine which is awesome. The pork spring rolls today were excellent and the meat inside isn't overly diced up.. it tastes like quality fresh pork. My date had Shanghai noodle bowl with bok choy and a little bit of mushroom. It was also excellent. Can't wait to come back again.

William B.

Yelp
crab Rangoon over-cooked. 2 vegetable spring roll were the smallest I have ever seen. Two vegetable spring rolls each a staggering 2 inches long for the "reasonable" sum of $3.50 plus tax. what a rip-off.

Yelp
I would give this more of a 2.5/5 rating. Most Asian food is average and this was that. Not great but not bad. The fried rice was slightly below average, lacked flavor and tasted more like brown rice. Not to mention they don't give you much rice. I had the General Tso chicken, the sauce was very good, however I prefer smaller bits of chicken that look less like meatballs. That being said the chicken was still fine in texture. The service was friendly and quick. I would return here if my friends wanted to go but this would not personally be my choice of Asian food.

Kalani H.

Yelp
6 pieces of chicken and one scoop of rice overpriced and overrated I paid 20$ for two general tsos just to be disappointed I will not be coming back here one of the flavor is mediocre

Chris M.

Yelp
The food was just about inedible. We order the sesame chicken which was cooked to the consistency of cardboard. The white rice was overcooked. The crab rangoon wraps were tough and hard to chew.

Karen F.

Yelp
I ordered the sesame chicken. The chicken breading was so thick and soggy. It was difficult to find the chicken it was so little. I ended up removing the soggy breading and eating what little meat there was. The rice was meh. No real flavor. My husband had the Teriyaki chicken. I didn't like the flavor of that but my husband thought it was just ok. He felt the same about the rice as I did, no flavor. Rangoons were ok. Overall, we spent quite a a bit of money for a meal that we didn't really enjoy. Ended up throwing the rice away. Won't give a second try.

Jeannine W.

Yelp
Food is quite good. We do a lot of takeout at Jade Garden. Service is good and staff friendly. The amount of food you get in an order is amazing. Love their Spring Rolls and Crab Rangoon. I could make a meal with just those two items. I have always liked anything I ordered because everything is very tasteful.

Rueben W.

Yelp
Order and barley got any chicken more veggies and rice then meat at this point I paid $20 for veggies and rice

Brian K.

Yelp
I lived in Lawrence from '88-2010, and would have rated Jade Garden as best in class. I ordered today (Orange Chicken & General Tso (picture attached if possible). They were identical (and horrible) except the Orange Chicken had a couple Orange peels and the General had one pepper. When I spoke with (what I assumed was an owner) she told me the order was correct, and I should have ordered something that tasted better. Amazing disappointment from a place that was formerly wonderful. I did notice the has "Best of Lawrence" awards for 2nd or 3rd place. I'll seeks #1 for a decent meal.

Yelp
This restaurant is the local equivalent of Disney. There are many different varieties and things to try. A person will never be bored in this restaurant. The first time I went here I was overwhelmed by the menu. I thought it was extensive and that was BEFORE I learned there was a second menu of Japanese food. I did not dare look at that menu, though, because I was still working my way through Menu #1. So many offerings- soups, salads, appetizers, vegetable dishes. Rice and noodle dishes, ramen meals, and so many other goodies. I have had a sampling of some of the items and have not ever been disappointed. The food has been just as described, fresh, hot and served quickly. The owners, Alan and Lisa, are very accommodating and they truly want you to enjoy your dining experience. There also seem to be quite a few regulars that come here, too. Regular customers are a great sign for any business. The restaurant is big and spacious. The decor is nicely done and the colors blend together well. Although it is a big restaurant, you do not feel overwhelmed and there is still a living room atmosphere. One thing I like about this restaurant is that it is not adorned with fake Asian motifs. Everything is nicely done. There is plenty of parking, as well. This restaurant is in a big strip mall and parking is never an issue. The prices are reasonable and nothing is outrageously priced. The quality of the food is good and everything is fresh and freshly prepared. The food is not the only thing they offer here, either. There is a karaoke bar for the adventurous and there are many rooms for small group gatherings. There seems to be a number of different activities that are offered in the bar area. The bar has an extensive selection of wines and liquors to try, as well. Reasonably priced, easy to access, fresh and hot food, well stocked bar. Honestly, is there anything else?

Caitlin G.

Yelp
The service is super unprofessional, they provide service to a college campus with TERRIBLE wait times and expect someone not to cancel their order at least ONCE. I do not appreciate the threatening texts sent by their establishment to my phone, on top of the noodles being dry all the time anyways. Would not recommend this place if you don't have patience for rudeness.

Karin S.

Yelp
Got sesame chicken and the sauce tasted burnt and the chicken sauce was almost black as a result. I didn't eat very much due to the poor taste, and got a terrible stomach ache afterwards. Now I'm in the midst of full blown food poisoning and needless to say I won't be returning in the future.

Wolf F.

Yelp
Absolutely terrible and overpriced Don't go here!!! Worst tasting food ever, greasy and they use soy sauce as main ingredient for everything practically Bleh

Yelp
Excellent service and delicious food!! The Singapore noodle dish is phenomenal and the egg rolls are top notch! I also had the egg drop soup and was very pleased. Lastly, the bubble teas here are super yummy with lots of flavor choices. Highly recommend all around!!!

Mi M.

Yelp
love the vegetable fried rice. The best Chinese food in Lawrence . I am contact back here for sure.

Yelp
Ordered 2 dishes and two appetizers (egg rolls and spring rolls) via Menufy. Order came, and egg rolls were missing, and (as at first appeared) one main dish 's styrofoam had a whole in it, and had leaked all over the other. Talked to owner, who said she'd supply the missing egg rolls and replace the leaking entree, but not the other. I looked more closely at the mess, and discovered that the second entree's styrofoam case was broken, too. When owner informed of this, she told me she now didn't believe a word I said, and wouldn't make good any of our losses. Never had trouble with them before, but will never be doing business with them again.

Yelp
I never ever have written a review. And hate folks who do just to impose their opinion. But I have to make an exception on this one so it doesn't happen to anyone else. The egg rolls tasted off when I ordered some this past Saturday. I ignored it and ate them anyway because hey were all human and have off days. But I have been incredibly sick since. Throwing up and can't keep anything down. Please be careful. Hopefully my experience helps you guys check on stuff better.

Hank H.

Yelp
Great pho soup! Everything had exceptional temperatures- hot food hot and cold food cold!

Yelp
Great place for Chinese food and lunch specials are very delicious. However I feel that the lunch specials should include an appetizer like a egg roll

Mrs F.

Yelp
Forget you Jade Garden. This is the last time I let you take my money. The last time was off hours so I gave you some grace. I was close by and hungry for Chinese. $9 for a lunch special would be fine. Rice is still cheap enough to not be so stingy with it, at least heat it up. It's dry and crunchy. 5 bites of chicken, really? Plus it's stringy and tough, with weird doughy filler. No side with it. Crab Rangoons $4 for three. Soup a bowl please, another $4!? No tofu in it, no veggies. $$18 dollars for a quick lunch? Never again.

Ashlie W.

Yelp
Always love each experience at Jade. Staff is welcoming and loved every dish I've had! Plus! They have a addition for the nighttime crowd for drinks and karaoke! 10/10!

Katie T.

Yelp
do not get anything off of the sushi menu. Below is a picture of the salmon nigiri I ordered. The rice underneath the fish was about the size of my fist while the "salmon" (if you can even call it that) was as thin as a piece of paper. My friends and I also ordered several rolls that were mostly just rice. None of us could finish them because of the way our stomachs began feeling from the small amount of fish that WAS there. We each ordered a different kind of soup--miso, egg drop, and hot & sour-- and they were either subpar at best or straight bad tasting and smelling. Like cmon miso soup?!? Honestly i can't recommend this place to anyone. Super overpriced for the LOWEST quality of ingredients I've ever seen at a restaurant. Huge scammers. Needs to go prob.

Jerry M.

Yelp
Quality has declined over the past 5 years. Food is edible and some dishes are still fairly tasty. Portion size varies from barely standard to poor. Dishes and appetizers are often pale imitations of standard dishes you may have had elsewhere. They seem to be a hibachi bar of ingredients in back with a variety of sauces and cooks follow a basic kindergarden level list of what pre-prep items to put into each dish and what to squirt into it. Lame. Some dishes are not even half-hearted attempts. Examples from my order tonight: First the Mongolian beef is just their basic beef pieces in a normal stir fry (and not even much beef) with extra onions and a few bits of scallions, other stir fry veggies, and drenched in soy sauce and some hoisin sauce. No spicy note as advertised. This was nothing even remotely like the dish you would get in an actual good Chinese cuisine restaurant such as PF Chang, for example. The portion size barely filled the bottom of the container halfway and maybe 10% was beef. For my fourteen dollars I got craptastic soggy salty veggie stir fry with some soggy pathetic beef bits. And this was a large order! Next up, a large order of teriyaki chicken ($11) gave us three *tiny* steamed broccoli florets next to maybe two tbsp of warmed-up frozen diced carrots and peas in the corner of the container and a shallow lake of faintly teriyaki flavored brown liquid with a half cup of tiny chicken pieces scattered, swimming in the brown sauce-lake. With delivery (who did not follow directions) costs and some seemingly reheated pre-made bland cream cheese rangoons (billed as "crab" rangoons) and bowl of equally bland egg drop soup I spent nearly fifty dollars on food I would have scoffed at for fifteen dollars total.

Yelp
Wow, the best mixed drinks staff is soo friendly. And the sushi is out of this world. They even have a karaoke rooms. Soo soo soo much fun

Yelp
Club Jade and Jade Garden are terrific. The food is great (try the ramen bowl here -- it's AWESOME) and the service is always the best. Alan, Lisa, Vincent and staff are always happy to answer questions or tweak a dish to make it a unique experience for you. Ask for the Chinese menu -- there are some terrific gems there!

Carly T.

Yelp
While it's a little pricey sometimes, Jade Garden is my go-to spot for takeout. They are always super fast and have a huge menu with a variety of different cuisines. Staff are always friendly here and at the bar connected to it!

Sasheen G.

Yelp
I rate them a 3 for many reasons: 1) I requested contactless delivery. The delivery man stayed at my door until I opened it- that is not contactless 2) the food was mediocre. Pho meat was over cooked, and there were no toppings (anyone could put over cooked meat, broth and noodles together) 3) no napkin or silverware, I expected at a minimum napkins, but chopsticks woulda been nice

Megan P.

Yelp
OMG the owner is so sweet and the food is so good! I would highly recommend this place to everyone. I frequently go and I am never disappointed Their crab rangoons are the best in town!

Seongmin L.

Yelp
$16 dollar pho. This is the saddest looking pho I have ever seen from a pickup. No veggies, no sauce, really really small quantity. The worst part is, sriracha and hoisin sauce for my PHO is an additional $2 for each sauce. How ridiculous.
google avatar

Travis D.

Yelp
Jade Garden is the worst Chinese food I have ever had. And one adult with two kids was $40! I knew it was not the best, but we couldnt even chew the over fried and under flavored chicken. The egg drop soup tasted of oil, the rice as super salty, and why is there a tip line when you preorder all the food when you get absolutely no assistance at the table? Don't waste your money, starving would be better option. All other reviewers must be either employees or family member of this restaurant. Any positive review in laughable

Melvin S.

Yelp
Very disappointing of a restaurant. I expected so much more. They were very stingy with the portions and waiter were rude as well. The chicken tasted funny and we didn't eat them because it looked not fresh as well. The food is also bland. No flavour, and not saying salt or pepper only, but bland overall.
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
We were in town for one night and craving Ramen. Luckily this place had it. It was very flavorful and hit the spot. We also had an order of crab rangoon. Although it was obvious there was no crab. Nonetheless still very good. Staff was very pleasant. Service was quick. They have a large menu. Prices were reasonable. We would definitely eat here again if we ever pass through again.
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
First and last time going to this place. Placed an online order that arrived incorrectly and was told we would had to wait another hour to get the rest of the order that was messed up. The crab rangoons had almost no filling and not a speck of crab (pictured). This is also the only place we've ever ordered crab rangoons from that doesn't come with sweet and sour dipping sauce, so dry barely filled fried dough. Portion sizes were also way smaller than other places in town for similar prices. The chicken was mediocre at best and the fries rice had no vegetables and little flavor.
google avatar

Jacob C.

Yelp
I've had it catered twice. The second time, I did everything I could to convince my people to cater from somewhere else. Fairly poor food. Service seemed fine, and the employees were on-time with the food and helped carry it in.
google avatar

Danielle G.

Yelp
Good food and they were patient with me while I figured out what I wanted off the authentic Chinese menu. I ended up with 重庆辣子鸡 or Chongqing chicken. It was delightfully spicy with the perfect amount of dried red peppers. The chicken was great and it came with soup and rice. Next time I'll go for the more authentic experience and order the bone in chicken but this was stellar. My partner ordered off of the standard menu and got a fresh tasting Cali roll and some delicious looking chicken fried rice. Definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
I can't speak for the Beef with Broccoli, Egg Drop Soup or Chicken Lo Mein. I suspect it's just like it is... here... and there... and every other Chinese joint in Lawrence. Or Kansas City. Or Topeka. Don't eat the stuff. I come here when I want to get outside my comfort zone a little because they have an extensive Chinese only menu and you can order off of it just like yours truly: skinny ass, middle-aged midwestern white boy. Today, a spectacular pork ribs hot pot brimming with vegetables and enough heat--no, make that a HELL of a lot of heat, probably the hottest, spiciest dish I've ever had in the city limits of Lawrence and it was fine. Just the antidote I needed after being cooped up for a few days post Christmas with the streets, driveway and sidewalks packed with snow and ice. Red chili oil bubbling to the top fueled by the sterno beneath. The pork ribs tender and packed with flavor, possibly a hint of cumin, nicely seared, bone and cartilage in, a good thing! Plenty of assorted vegetables: onions, bok choy, celery, carrots and more. A dish that makes you happily sweat and leave knowing you won't need to dine again for the rest of the day (post-lunch). Want tripe, intestine soup, pig's feet in hot pot, chicken feet and beyond? Blood in your soup? You can get it here on the Chinese menu. They also dabble in some Korean, Japanese, Thai. Wait, it's just starting to get weird--there are Hispanic guys cooking in the back. Don't be surprised, the great cooks in this country come from south of the border. They also cook in my favorite Vietnamese, Italian and Steakhouse in town. Next up: have to try the lamb cumin dishes that aren't listed as such but must be Xi'an influenced. If you come: your typical strip mall Chinese restaurant. Nothing fancy but a nice touch is two large tables that seat 8-10 and are elevated, often packed with Asian students from KU on weekends. Good for a large party. No alcohol on the menu. Priced moderately, large portions (my meal could have, should have fed two). Ample parking.
google avatar

Elijah E.

Yelp
This place is absolutely disgusting I found a cockroach in my food and there was stains all over the floor and booths. They are very expensive and the workers are not nice at all, I will not be going back because of how hideous there food is. It is so gross.

Yelp
ETA: the *best* thing on the Americanized menu is the Honey Chicken (under chef's specials). It is incredible. Lightly battered and miraculously crunchy (even after traveling for delivery!) with a crisp sweet-and-salty exterior that is almost a candied shell, it's that crisp to the bite. I like to add a sprinkle of Maldon salt to mine to really even out the sweet and the salty. I end up putting the rice in the fridge, the chicken is pre-carbed with that lovely light batter and stands really well on its own. I order from Jade Garden almost every Sunday night, so not too long ago I started kind of randomly ordering stuff off of the authentic Chinese menu just to branch out and experiment, and try new things. What I learned is that the authentic Chinese menu is where it's AT.My favorite thing on it is the Beijing Zha Jiang Mein. It's basically spag bol, but Beijing-style with a rich sauce made of ground pork, plum sauce, garlic, and fermented sweet/sour black bean paste - it's sweet, salty, spicy, and has tons of swooningly good brain-satisfying umami flavor - all in a really great balance with each other. The sauce is spooned over round wheat noodles much like pasta, then topped with a big spoonful of pickled garlic that you will probably smell before the delivery guy manages to knock. There are handfuls of fresh crunchy cucumber, carrot, and sprouts scattered around the periphery of the dish, and having bites with cold crisp crunchy to alternate with the darkly rich sweet/spicy/savory sauce and chewy noodles is really nice (I actually also order a side of cucumber salad so I don't run out of crunch). Warning: do NOT order the western equivalent off the non-authentic menu, I did that one night (the Americanized stuff is cheaper, I was curious) and it was not good. They left out everything that makes the sauce great and it didn't have the fresh crunchy veggies. Which I guess might make it taste better to some people but I can't imagine. I ended up throwing the whole box out, chalked it up to experience, and made sure to order the Beijing Zha Jiang Mein off the authentic menu the next time. All the flavors, all the textures. I totally recommend it - it's cheerful Chinese grandma makes you comfort food kind of food. Delicious!

Yelp
If you're searching for the best fried rice in town that's affordable and a quick delivery, this is the place. Have only ordered the fried rice and several chicken meals and everything has been exceptionally seasoned. My order has always been fulfilled how I wanted it and quick. My go to Chinese food place for quick and good food!
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
I took my daughter here for lunch a few weeks back, I had no idea what she wanted from this place as my mother always took her. The guy taking orders knew and I was forever grateful. The General's Chicken is very spicy, perfect!
google avatar

Sean F.

Yelp
We'd heard from friends that the food was good here, but it really wasn't. We ordered Moo goo gai pan, General Tzo's Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, extra egg rolls, spring rolls and Crab Rangoon with lots of extra fried and steamed rice. None of the main dishes were particularly good. Our local friends were embarrassed and suggested the restaurant was having a bad night, because the food was "off". Our sides were over-fried and burned as well. The last slap was being charged $1.35 for sweet and sour sauce on our $70 to go order. I don't plan on patronizing the Jade Garden ever again.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
This restaurant has just expanded, and now includes a sushi bar in an attached new room. Surprisingly they can even make sushi with brown rice. This is very unusual.
google avatar

Corey W.

Yelp
Ordered the spicy popcorn chicken and it was horrible chopped like bacon bits and hardly any flavor...

Dalton L.

Yelp
Probably one of the most disappointing meals I've had at a Chinese restaurant. I've literally had much better Chinese food from a buffet, or from the freezer section. The chicken had a weird texture and was not really hot, like it was microwaved. The crab Rangoon was soggy and luke warm, like it was microwaved. The soft spring roll wasn't very exciting either. All I could taste was the canned crab. We heard a microwave door close and all of the beeping of a microwave several times as we sat waiting for our food. I can't believe we paid almost $20 for that meal..... no flavor.

Lindsay C.

Yelp
Amazing customer service. Favorite Chinese place in town. Staff is always extremely polite and food is delicious. I recommend this restaurant to anyone.
