The Best Wine Tasting Rooms in Santa Barbara - AFAR

"Located in a quieter, industrial part of town about a mile from the Funk Zone, this working winery produces roughly 5,000 cases annually of Rhône-style wines; the tasting room is inside the production facility (be mindful of forklifts in the small parking lot). For a typical $15 tasting you might sample a honeysuckle-scented viognier, a jammy, smoky and slightly spicy grenache, and—when available—the reserve Upslope syrah, noted for rich, spicy flavors of dried cherry and oak." - Georgia Freedman

Google
Gosh, these wines are great! Knowledgeable + friendly service & excellent variety of Rhône style reds. Fun/industrial space is just legit. When we were done tasting, I wanted to pull up a seat & talk to the winemakers. For us, it was Petit Syrah for the Win!

Google
Love Jaffurs. Every wine is fantastic. My faves are their Viognier and Syrahs. Not to miss, although they are a bit off the wine path in SB!

Jeremiah was absolutely amazing! What an awesome experience ending the Memorial weekend! He was so kind and thorough. We signed up for a wine club and look forward to coming back. Thank you.

Google
Great selection of wines. This place has a good atmosphere especially that most people are friendly.

Google
I not only LOVE the wine but I love all of the people that work there! They are great! Customer service is excellent, and very knowledgeable and super friendly. We live in Arizona and make special trips to Santa Barbara because we are so thrilled with Jaffurs Wine! You cannot go wrong belonging to the wine club.

Google
Awesome wines, awesome people. If you're looking for great wine, stop here!

Google
One of our go-to places when visiting Santa Barbara. We've been coming here for a while now and have been on and off and on again members. It's not one of those winery on the vineyard types, just a small operation that makes wonderful wine! I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention how friendly their staff is.

Google
I have been a Jaffurs wine fan for 10 years. I think their wines are fantastic and I love the easy going relaxed tasting room and have been many times. I'm living in Italy now and missing a Jaffurs Syrah very much!

Yelp
We paid Jaffurs a visit at the suggestion of our wedding coordinator. The location is off the beaten path in the Eastside of Santa Barbara, in an industrial garage with a few parking spots. The space is cozy and welcoming, and we later learned that Jaffurs makes their wines in house rather than in a large vineyard in another location. Miranda, the tasting room manager, welcomed us with open arms and happily explained to us how the wines are made and what grapes they use. At the time of our visit, they offered two tastings: all-Burgundy and all-Rhone. She is clearly very knowledgeable about the winery's offerings and regulars filtered in throughout our visit, eager to greet her like an old friend. She took great care of us and really made us feel at home!

Yelp
We decided to try this small production winery after brunch on a Saturday. We were the first customers of the day and were pleased but the friendly knowledgeable staff. The tasting room is behind a Mexican Restaurant north of the 101. They have a small private parking lot that accommodates three cars and an open air tasting room. We did not have a reservation and noticed they accepted walk-ins. This little winemaker uses grapes from the region to create some tasty wine in the tasting room. You get to see all the production equipment as it surrounds you while you taste. The wine is tasty and we picked up a few. We really enjoyed our Valentines themed tasting of Petite Syrah with some locally made chocolate for $8 more than the tasting price. We hope to return again.

Yelp
Great spot for Syrahs! Came for a quick tasting before lunch and were happily surprised by how much we enjoyed the wines! After a week focused on pinots, we wanted to mix it up. Their tasting started with a Viognier, then a Chardonnay, then a grenache before finishing with some Syrahs. I liked that the grenache was less fruit forward and enjoyed subtle tannins and peppery notes of the syrah. The pourers were extremely knowledgeable, and we enjoyed geeking out on wine together! Overall a really fun experience and yummy wines.

Yelp
Super nice generous tasting!! We probably tasted 8 wines instead of the 5 on the classic flight and they pretty much were all good. Host was friendly and personable. We bought one bottle of the 2019 Pinot noir which was super good. Try this winery if you are in the neighborhood !!

Yelp
Escape the Funk Zone and crawl over to Milpas Street for this small production winery. From the second I stumbled upon this nondescript garage, Miranda and Stephanie welcomed me boisterously. They were born to pour wine and showed their enthusiasm. Of course the wine bottles were crying wine tears to be shared. Miranda started me off with their refreshingly crisp Viognier and provided a quick insiders tour by pulling open a secondary garage door. The cooled air from the Barrel Room gave me goosebumps. She goes on to tell me that when it's production time, they use the second story balcony to pour the grapes into the machinery. Talk about a huge operation for such a small production winery! All of Jaffurs grapes are gathered from local Santa Barbara County vineyards including Thompson (Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Mourvedre), Bien Nacido (Viognier, Syrah, Grenache), Larner (Syrah, Grenache), Kimsey (Syrah) and Stolpman (Grenache, Roussanne). For me, these are some of the best producing vineyards in the county! For me, I come here for their Syrahs--Larner and Stolpman is where it's at. Yet, I enjoy that each of their Syrahs are all very special and different from one another. Every time I come in, they're pouring something different which is fun to experiment or simply just chat the afternoon away.

Yelp
Jaffurs is the best!!! This is my husband and my favorite winery. We love that the production and the tasting room are in the same location. It makes for a great wine tasting experience when harvest is happening and you get to see the wine being made. We love Santa Barbara wine, but it is a lot of pinot and chardonnay and we wanted a little more variety in our lives. Jaffurs Rhone varietal wines drew us in, and we became members after our first tasting. BTW they also have great pinot and chardonnay! The perks of being a wine club member not only gets you great discounts, but invites to their amazing pick up parties and other great member only events. As an LA based member we really appreciate that they throw an LA pick up event once a year. I couldn't recommend this place enough!

Yelp
Instead of Sunday Brunch we went to Jaffurs Wine Cellars for a wine tasting. It's a small shop tucked away in the residential area. We had an educational visit here, lots of questions and answers. The lady working was so knowledgeable and the wine was a nice start to my day. My favorite from this location was the 2015 Viognier, Bien Nacido Vineyard; a white wine crisp with a mild fruity flavor goes well with seafood. Unfortunately they did not have any chairs of stools to sit on which would have made it a bit more comfortable. Thanks to Santa Barbara Vintners Spring Weekend the Premier Spring Wine & Food Festival Grand Tasting. Thursday, April 21-Sunday, April 24, 2016 Vintner's Visa

Yelp
They provide a delightful experience with their best in class wines. Try the Grenache!

Yelp
On vacation in Santa Barbara for some wine tasting and Jaffurs did not disappoint! We scheduled a tasting and they were very accommodating with COVID, as the tasting was outdoors. The hospitality and service was amazing and they even gave us recommendations to other tasting rooms. My favorites were the Chardonnay and Red Blend. Definitely recommend a visit to Jaffurs!
google avatar

Yelp
This winery offered free tastings for the hotel we were staying at, so my friend and I decided to stop by and check it out. The winery does all of their production and bottling on site. The wines we tried were from a set menu and flavorful. They even had a cute shop dog that was roaming around. Definitely a winery to check out while in the area

Yelp
This was our last winery we visited on our trip to Santa Barbara and we are so so glad we came here The tasting room is so unique and unassuming. Very relaxed atmosphere but limited seating. All their wine making occurs in that small space and they make delicious wines. We loved the Grenache, Syrah and Petite Syrah. Some bottles were taken back to Maryland and I would love to be a wine club member. They have mAny things to keep kids entertained as well like magnets, chalk and drawing books. That really helped us enjoy the great wines and learn about Jaffurs. Thanks Miranda for being a great help. Whenever we come back to SB, we will definitely visit!

Yelp
First Santa Barbara wine tasting experience for me--surfboards and all! Cost to worth it ratio: 2.5 Highlights: - Surfboards: coolest thing about this place. Had a bunch of surfboards hung up on the wall. Guess they are collectibles of the owner and there's a binder that explains them all. Welcome to Santa Barbara wine tasting--you won't see that in Napa! :-) - Types of wine: besides bunches of syrahs, had a roussanne varietal which I had never seen as well as a sangiovese which is always nice to see - One wine had a picture of a dog on the label and proceeds from the sale of it benefits a local dog park. I'm not a dog-lover, but I have enough friends who are to think this is cool and unwinery like. ;-) - In a garage-type room in an industrial area of the town. Lowlights (my flip side to highlights): - We didn't get much description of each wine we tasted except for where the vineyards are located on map. I'm a wine person and like to be educated a bit about the winery and each wine while I taste. - Tasting fee: $8, which isn't much for Napa, but other places we visited charged less and provided more of a complete tasting experience I'm glad we tried it, but not one of the tasting rooms I'd run back to next time I'm in town.

Yelp
This is my wife and my favorite winery ever. The staff is awesome, the wine is amazing and the experience is always top notch. Miranda, the tasting room manager is so nice and always makes us feel at home. Daniel the owner and Steven the winemaker, are always willing to talk with you about their amazing wine and not make you feel like a wine noob. Love this place and the people at Jaffurs.
google avatar

Yelp
5 star experience with Miranda leading the way! Loved their 2016 Pinot Noir and the 2016 Larner vineyard Syrah. They do a lot with the space they have and produce some great tasting wine. Miranda was friendly and knowledgeable.

Yelp
Manager is a terrible person. Take your business elsewhere. She turned down good business, claiming she felt we wouldn't purchase enough wine. Funny as we were looking to purchase multiple cases, struggling business, turning down business, not very smart in my opinion. I hope the owner is aware of who is running the show when they aren't around.
google avatar

Krissy H.

Yelp
My fav winery ever. Join the wine club. Best staff. Grenache is epic. All their whites are gorgeous and so refreshing. High tide and petite sirah are my favs!

Nancy G.

Yelp
We decided to stop by Jaffurs on our way up to Paso (thanks to their outstanding Yelps.) They did not disappoint! Everyone we interacted with in the winery was super nice. They are clearly hard-working, and the proof is in the wine, too. We bought several bottles. And we'll be back!

Gregg M.

Yelp
The manager was incredibly unprofessional and should take a lesson in customer service. We were profiled against, she claimed we looked like wouldnt purchase enough wine. That our party was too big though we called in advance, simple solution would be split the parties. Very rude, unacceptable. We took our business elsewhere and found two cases of great wine at Santa Barbara winery. I highly recommend SB Winery.
google avatar

Yelp
Jaffurs is the preeminent winery in Santa Barbara, really no question on that one. They don't have the fanciest tasting room and they're definitely not in the "hippest" neighborhood but they for sure have the best wines especially if you're talking about Syrah. And just to pile on, they have the very best people both running and working the place. You just wont find a more authentic and exceptional group of people making a better product anywhere in the area or, frankly, anywhere I've ever been! :-) If you live in SB or are just visiting and you haven't been to Jaffurs, you are missing out big time :-)
google avatar

Sean B.

Yelp
One of the best wineries in the Santa Barbara area! The location is totally random, but it is also totally worth venturing out there for the exquisite wines at reasonable prices.
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
Jaffurs produces some of the best wines that I've had in the Santa Barbara area, especially when it comes to white wine. The Viognier and Grenache Blanc are some of the best white wines I've had in the area, and the late harvest Viognier is definitely a treat when it comes to dessert wines. The different Syrahs are all excellent as well, and it's fun to try them side by side to see how various different factors affect the same varietal. If you're in the area and looking for good wine, definitely go to Jaffurs.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Love, love, love Jaffurs. We have been club members for a while now, and you just can't go wrong. Their sryahs are AMAZING. And we generally don't drink whites, but we love the whites here. We are super spoiled by the quality of this wine now...but that's a good thing of course! I like that the tasting room is off the beaten path and in their actual facility - it's cool to see all the machinery. Miranda is the best - love tasting with her. :)

Yelp
Great wines! Always make a stop in Santa Barbara to visit Jaffurs. Fun knowledgeable people. Very happy to see Jaffurs in more restaurants now. First had Jaffurs Syrah at the Hitching post 3 years ago.

Yelp
Great wine. We have been drinking wine from here for the last 6 plus years. Friendly staff and fair prices. We actually had wine we bought from there yesterday this evening!! It was terrific. Thanks

Yelp
Fantastic tasting room + beautiful white and red wines! Brought my family here on a visit to SB! Family and dog friendly! Wine member who loved the experience! Come and visit!
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
Ask for Miranda! Any Jaffurs wine you drink is made right here! Miranda knew so much about each wine, answered all my novice questions, showed us some barrels and told us stories of personal foot-stomping of the grapes. We even drank wine she had personally stomped! Thank you for a sweet afternoon!

Kara H.

Yelp
Nothing but love for Jaffurs! We discovered Jaffurs as a recommendation from our hotel, fell in love with the Syrah on the first visit, joined their club, and make it a point to visit each time in SB. Their small production is impressive and they put so much care into their wines. All of the employees are extremely knowledgeable, proud of, and very passionate about their wines - and super friendly and welcoming! An annual wine pick up event is hosted in LA. The tasting room is a little off the beaten path, but worth the journey, with a cozy and relaxed atmosphere.
google avatar

Abby S.

Yelp
A diamond in the rough when it comes to Petite Syrah and Grenache. And for the price point ($35-40/bottle), Jaffurs offers a great value. The tasting room and bottling area are one in the same. It's quite humble, but don't let that fool you! Sit down and sample a few varietals, you will not be disappointed. Probably the favorite wine of the day was the 100% Grenache. Bought two bottles and can't wait to open 'em up with a nice dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
5 Stars "Where is Jaffurs... should be right here right?" Those were my thoughts as I drove past 3 times before finding this hole in the wall. As we walked in we saw a bunch of ugly machines, a cherry picker with a dude pouring grapes into a giant machine, and a small jury rigged table with some wines on it. Hmm .... but WOW WOW WOW Jaffurs wines were awesome. They absolutely fail in the ambiance category, but I don't think they really care. The man pouring was really nice and told us a little about each wine. All of their wines are under 800 cases production, most are only about 100-200 cases. Small boutique producers are awesome! 2007 Voignier Blen Nacido and Stolpman Vineyard Blend (Almost perfectly balanced for a Voignier; intense bright sweet orange fruits, and a good solid acidity to it. Bought a bottle of this one.) ~6 out of 7 Stars 2007 Grenache (VERY tanic with a great lingering spicy finish, This would be a great wine to have with something spicy.) ~5 out of 7 Stars 2006 Syrah Thompson Vineyard (A absolutely beautiful Syrah with full berry and tar flavors.) ~5.8 out of 7 Stars 2007 Syrah, Vernas Vineyard (You could dye a white shirt blood red-purple with this wine, it's very very deep with a intense power to it. A nose of blackberries, and jam, with a dirty smoky flavor. It also has an intense chocolaty flavor that lingers on your tongue for a full minute after you taste it. Incredible, and very complex...! Bought 2 bottles of this one.) ~6.9 out of 7 Stars Sadly I don't have notes for the rest of the wines I tasted, but definitely check out this hole in the wall!

Yelp
Jaffurs is a warehouse winery off of Milpas Street in Downtown Santa Barbara. It is a very small producer who buys most of their stuff from growers, but they do have a vineyard up in Santa Ynez. Tasting fee is $10 for 6. No free glass. They are most known for their vineyard-specific Syrah, which is quite good and retails around $60. The bottle is sealed in hot dipped white wax, similar to Maker's Mark (a cute touch). However, we found their Viognier to be super fabulous - slight mineral, crisp, with just a hint of sugar. We stopped by late last year right after harvest, and the winemaker was kind enough to show us their bins, explain the fermentation process, etc. That was pretty cool. So why three stars? Simple - there are tons of Syrah producers in Los Olivos, which can deliver a comparable product for half the price. If you drink as much as I do, price is important! Worth a visit if you like Syrah (although $60 can buy you some serious nut-busting Shiraz from OZ).

Mary B.

Yelp
My absolute favorite wine in Santa Barbara county. We will always come here whenever we are up from Los Angeles. The Kimsey Syrah is worth it.
google avatar

Carey V.

Yelp
If you're in Santa Barbara and find yourself trekking along the Urban Wine Trail, this is a must-stop! Off the beaten path, Jaffurs is a hidded gem amongst the surrounding buildings...look for a white warehouse-looking structure with a small, gated lot. Inside you will find some of the best interpretations of Rhone varietals this side of France. Yes, a bold statement I know. But I stand resolute in knowing the crew at Jaffurs can really craft a Syrah! Age-worthy and big, these wines will impress those who have the imagination to think about what the wine can evolve into over the next few years. Swing by!!
google avatar

Lindley C.

Yelp
This place is totally unpretentious and the staff is extremely informative and kind. I would recommend this tasting room to an expert or novice. We sampled two whites and three red (Grenache blanc, Viognier, Grenache, and two Syrahs) and ended up purchasing a Viognier. I was impressed with the quality for the price (the bottle we bought was $27). Thanks to Curtis for a very pleasant experience!
google avatar

Al A.

Yelp
If you enjoy a well crafted Rhone varietal wines, this is one of the wineries that should be on your list. A very small winery, only producing less then 4000 cases a year. For the last several months they have been getting many excellent reviews from Wine Spectator. Check out there site and see for your self. The owner and wine makers are laid back and have a passion for what they do, and it shows in all their wines. http://www.jaffurswine.com Cheers!
google avatar

Marc G.

Yelp
Supurb wines by people with a passion for what they do. I like some better than others, but that is my pallet. They are all good. the value is great for bottles and wine club members. For you people that are looking for some free glasses, big pours during tasting or a cheesy tasting room, don't waste your time, or the readers time with your negetive words. This place is the crux of what SBC vinters do best.
google avatar

John I.

Yelp
Great wine and service here. Defintely a Rhones hub w/ a pretty good Pinot that flies under that radar (titled the Mistress as it's not a Rhone). My group left here with a few bottle purchases.. their Reserves are defintely worth trying to fit a taste into - if you kindly ask. The tasting room is their bottling facility - which to some might be a downturn - not for me.. i judge by wine & service. I recommend this place if you don't mind fleeing the Funk Zone / Urban Wine Trail - you'll need to go by car as it's a good mile or two from all the other rooms.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
If you don't like their wines, great, more for me. Come to Jaffurs for some of the best QPR wines in CA. Stellar Rhone varietals.

David M.

Yelp
What can I say. I've been a club member for a number of years and the wine is as consistent as it gets. Jaffurs Syrah is my favorite - Kimsey, Bien Nacido, Thompson, you name it...Their Grenache Blanc and Viognoir are outstanding also and I am usually a red drinker. Their staff is incredibly friendly also. I love their tasting room location as it is off the beaten path and very comfortable to belly up and taste! Thanks Jaffurs!
google avatar

Brian U.

Yelp
I'm not sure why so many reviews of winery tasting rooms in Santa Barbara are so focused on the "room" instead of the "tasting". Isn't the food more important than the décor? When I search for a restaurant on Zagat, my focus is on the food first, cost second, service third, and décor is last. So for décor, this isn't the place to go (bachelorette parties stay away). For the best wine in town, this is the absolute best place to go. Jaffurs specializes in Rhone varietals with a lighter style. I rarely find Rhone whites that I like, but I liked both their Grenache and Viognier - probably because they weren't heavy-handed. Of the reds, the Mourvedre and Petite Sirah stood out. The nose on the red wines was gorgeous. The wines were so consistently good, my girlfriend signed up for the wine club and we purchased a case. At that point, the $10 tasting fees and glasses were obviously free. They don't take American Express.
google avatar

Lena H.

Yelp
This is a cool little winery, with some really cool wines. The atmosphere is laid-back--here the experience is all about the wines (the tasting "bar" is just a table set up amid the barrels.) They really like their Rhone varietals, and they do them well. They represent what I love about the wine community in Santa Barbara: they don't follow that whole Falconcrest, grand estate, pretentious model of winemaking. They just find a warehouse somewhere, and make damn good wines in it! This place is off the beaten path, but seek it out!
google avatar

Marianne C.

Yelp
I've been to some bare bones tasting rooms before, but this one takes the cake. They literally set up tables like you'd buy from Target in a garage. I'm a firm believer that the quality of wines are more important than the fanciness of ambience of a tasting room, but c'mon. And the quality of the wines is not that great to overcome the quality of where you taste. Their syrahs are their strong point, and I did like a Santa Barbara County Syrah, but it wasn't great enough for me to make a purchase. Beckmen and Zaca Mesa and Andrew Murray just do a much better job with Syrahs from this growing region.

Ing P.

Yelp
What I love about this winery is the consistency year after year in their wines and of course the customer service. The girls are so pleasant and welcoming, it's like coming home from college all over and getting a big welcome home from mom and dad. Love this place!!
google avatar

Joanne B.

Yelp
They produce their wines here at this location, in a residential area. Very interesting to visit as you get a glimpse of how it is all done, right where you are tasting. Carla was our hostess, and was very informative about the wines and the local area as well. Loved the Syrah and Petite Syrah, as well as the Grenache Blanc. If you purchase two bottles, you get one tasting free, so that is a plus, and you get to keep the glass, for $10.
google avatar

Courtney T.

Yelp
The Petite Syrah has always been my favorite & was how I originally heard about Jaffurs. After tasting their other wines, I began to see how Jaffurs makes truly amazing wine. They make great California Rhone varietals! My boyfriend & I thought the Grenache was absolutely stellar along with the Syrah SBC and Syrah Verna's vineyard. Also if you have a chance to try, their blend (High Tide) & dessert wine (Late Harvest Viognier) were delicious as well! Additionally, Dave was such a pleasant experience! So informative as well as such a friendly guy. As new wine club members, we look forward to more Jaffurs in our future!
google avatar

R.C. G.

Yelp
The location itself is a warehouse, in a mixed residential-commercial neighborhood. Why would anyone come here? Easy - world class wine. Go to Los Olivos and Santa Ynez for the beautiful atmosphere and and the fun of a wine-tasting trip, but Craig Jaffurs' wines are better than 99% of any wine you'll taste within 100 miles, especially Jaffurs Syrah. Wine-tasting is subjective so your opinion may vary, but when wine lovers ask me what are the one or two wineries they must visit south of Sonoma or Napa, for me this is one of them.
google avatar

Juliet H.

Yelp
Don't let the location put you off from stopping here. If you're looking for beautiful views of vineyards this is not your place. It's located in a mixed use section of town behind an Auto Zone. But if you are looking for great Rhone varietals served by friendly and knowledgeable people this is the place for you. Jaffurs makes some outstanding wines in this industrial looking location and the people who work in their tasting room know their stuff. Try their Petite Syrah and their Vignonier. Its a great place to stop on the way back to LA from Paso Robles and then you can have lunch and shop in Santa Barbara.
google avatar

Adam F.

Yelp
I have been to a lot of different wineries in Santa Barbara county and also in Paso Robles areas and Jaffurs produces some great wines. I have come here several times for tastings and have always been treated well - the staff treats you great and they are knowledgeable about the wine. After coming the first time, I joined their wine club and have come since, for some of their special wine club events which are great experiences - for example their special barrel samplings that they do. It has always been a great experience and appreciate the consistency of their wine production. They really do get some of the best Rhone varietal grapes in the county to use in making their top-notch wines.
google avatar

Kanani B.

Yelp
It was our first time visiting Jaffurs and it was great to see the humble origins of such fantastic wine! The tasting room and wine-making area are one and the same, with surfboards decorating the warehouse-like interior, but what Jaffurs is lacking in ambiance, they make up for in excellent wine - which is what really matters - to me, at least! We had enjoyed Jaffurs' Syrah at Opal the night before with some tasty filet mignon and bought 2 more bottles here for $25 each to enjoy over the weekend. Would definitely join this wine club if we lived in Santa Barbara - not San Diego! Thanks Jaffurs...till next time!

Jp E.

Yelp
Best place in Santa Barbara to taste Syrah. Miranda and the rest of the jaffurs crew are top notch. You won't be disappointed.
