When I moved to Bend in 1977, Jakes was already a legend in the community, for its large portions, friendly atmosphere, and good service. Fast forward 45 years...
It had been a couple of years since we had eaten at Jake's, so I took my wife there for brunch this morning.
How VERY disappointing!
The service was lousy (I didn't even leave a tip, and we had to find our own take-home boxes after waiting for over 5 minutes trying to catch our waitress' eye - in vain). There was no offer of coffee refills, even though the dining room was not that busy and there were 4 servers .
My "Reuben" sandwich was possibly the WORST I have EVER had -
ANYwhere! It looked more like a sauerkraut sandwich on rye that someone had accidently spilled a few shreds of pastrami into. For my $16.10, I also got a double handful of tater tots. (It's a good, cheap way to fool the customer into thinking that they are getting their money's worth.) and a single dill pickle slice.
Reubens are one of my favorite sandwiches, and in my 78 years on earth, I have grown accustomed to them actually containing pastrami slices - several pastrami slices. Not so with Jakes. There may have been a total of one ounce of meat in the entire sandwich. No slices, only shreds, outnumbered 3 to one by sauerkraut between the soggy slices of bread. According to Jakes, evidently the half-portion shown in the photo is worth $8.05, but certainly not to me!
When we were checking out, the cashier (perhaps the owner) asked me if everything was ok. I told him that I was quite disappointed in the meat content of my Reuben. He acted as though he hadn't heard me, made no reply, and handed me my change without a thank you.
