The Best Breakfast Restaurants in Bend, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Jake’s is a true no-frills, salt-of-the-earth diner, but it may have the best old-fashioned sausage gravy and hash browns in town. The diner delivers heaping portions that give a calorie boost for a day of vigorous outdoor activities. The menu spans diner classics from chicken-fried steak to a kielbasa omelet to eggs Florentine, alongside staples like pancakes, waffles, and Texas French Toast. For those with a sweet tooth, grab a giant brownie or cinnamon roll on the way out. Note that the restaurant is packed every Monday for a Veteran’s meeting." - Barb Gonzalez

The food was absolutely amazing. I used to buy fuel here when it was a truck stop 30+ years ago and the food is just as good now as it was then bathrooms or immaculate portions are way too big one male will easily feed two people I took a couple videos the picture of the mail. I also took a picture of what it is called on the menu. I highly recommend it

Google
Classic spot packed with regulars, but they make visitors feel quite welcome. The coffee flows. I like that they have an option for a smaller portion size. I got the California omlette as a scramble, no tomatoes. It was really densely packed with bacon and the potatoes were piping hot and crisp, just how I like em.

Google
Such an incredible place!! We were recommended to come here from a local and I’m beyond impressed with how much food you get for the price! The crew was so kind and attentive!! Will definitely be coming back in the future!

Google
Biscuits- big and expensive. $6.50 each. Not great. Dry and fairly flavorless. Would not come back for biscuits. Chocolate chip cookie - fantastic. I was not expecting this cookie to be so good. I would come back just for the cookie.

Jake's was super busy, our server was amazing! No matter how busy she was (and she was swamped with a full house) she was courteous polite and gracious throughout the whole brunch. Best service I've had in years from anywhere. Even though they were packed and there was a long line waiting to get in, or good came out surprisingly fast and was absolutely perfect. My teenage boys couldn't believe how much they got in their order and loved every bite.

Google
**Review: Amazing Breakfast Spot – Fast, Delicious, and Friendly!** This place is a gem! The food is absolutely delicious, with huge portions that guarantee you won't leave hungry. Despite being fast service, the quality is top-notch, and everything comes out fresh and hot. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. Whether you're grabbing a quick bite or sitting down for a hearty breakfast, this spot hits the mark. Highly recommend! Also super kid friendly!

Google
You’d better be hungry when you get here! The biscuits are huge (but flour flavored), the English muffin is definitely not store bought (big!) and even the small sizes are enough to feed 2! The gravy is awesome (and I like the gravy I make more than most places)! You probably won’t need to order a side of gravy if your food comes with gravy already. Great food, fast service. 10-10 would stop again!

Friendly service and good food. Large portions and great value.

Yelp
One of our favorite spots in Bend! I grew up in a family that owned diners and primarily breakfast/lunch spots that remind me so much of Jake's that I feel right at home. My wife and I go to Jake's multiple times a month for breakfast and couldn't be happier with the food, but the staff is really what makes it. From Sheena to Casey this place treats their people like they're family. Erika and I usually go for the Carnitas Hash (or the chicken fried steak if I have my way), and are never disappointed. If you're looking for a place with huge portions, good food, and a non-pretentious attitude (rare in bend) then you gotta make Jake's your first stop.

Yelp
I have been here a couple of times while visiting Bend. Their prices are a bit more than the normal diner prices. But the portions are large. The kids meal is a great price for the amount of food. I got the stacker which is hashbrowns, covered in peppers, onions, tomatoes, bacon, and cheese, topped with eggs your way and smothered in hollandaise. This time I got over easy and one of the eggs was cooked through. I really love the runny egg with the whole dish, kind of like an eggs Benedict. Topped with Tabasco, this dish really shines! The biscuits and gravy were good as well as the nice thickness of the bacon. The tables come with different types of James and even had an apple butter. Service was good and steady. It wasn't busy since they just opened after having some kind of pipe issue. We have been here a few times with a large party and had to wait.

Yelp
If you are looking for Breakfast then this is the place. Great food and lots of it, I had the long hauler and it is massive. Service is quick and friendly and food comes out fast. Nice quaint little place, very clean and very all American feel to it. I come here anytime I'm in town. Highly recommend it.

Yelp
In what world does two sausage, four scrambled eggs, stuffed hash browns and two (big) pancakes cost $28.50? That was to-go. Without tip. Food is mid at best. Price is absolutely crazy. Go to McKay Cottage or better yet, cook at home.

Yelp
Friday morning and the place is packed. Come hungry because the portions are huge. Biscuits and gravy are really well done.

Yelp
Good service but wrong timing on going when there is a huge club meeting. Food very tasty

Yelp
Delicious food! Service was great. We had a big party and we were well taken care of! Will definitely go again!

Yelp
Good Breakfast. 1. Served quickly 2. Hot 3. Well served / portions. 4. Friendly (And a little bit of local Sass). Get there early. Tables turn quickly. Solid place.
google avatar

Yelp
Simple. No frills kind of restaurant but I enjoyed every moment of it. The dishes are sized big portions so come hungry. We were recommend by some locals to check this place out since it's our first time in Bend, Oregon and I'm so glad we did. The chicken fired steak and eggs were delicious. Be warned when you get there to prepare to wait. No reservations and it's a first come first serve kind of diner.

Yelp
My family and I had breakfast at Jake's diner for our very first time today. It's probably the last breakfast joint in bend that serves delicious food at an affordable price with huge portions. We were greeted kindly and our server was spectacular. We will be back again. Thank you

Francesca B.

Yelp
Jake's reminded me of a truck stop restaurant. The host & waitress were very friendly. My "stuffed hash browns" were really good. I will definitely go back.

Thomas J.

Yelp
Service was great. Wanted to mix up breakfast selection, wait staff recommended changes that made it even better. Jake's was a typical diner layout, cozy tables and decor. Food was tasty, iced tea was constantly refilled just as I like it.

Yelp
Food - The portions are large and delicious! Service - Excellent! The waiters are extremely busy but the always circle back to you. Very nice too. Ambiance - The place is neat and tidy. Memorabilia on the wall are interesting.

Todd H.

Yelp
The food was good but it cost way too much as you can see on my receipt, $54 for two people for breakfast

Yelp
The cashier at Costco recommended Jake's Diner. She was spot on. We missed the driveway for the restaurant and drove through the auto dealership to the parking lot. There were plenty of empty parking spots and picked one within easy distance to the front door. A gentleman opened the door for us and told us to sit at any clean table. The waitress quickly brought us menus, pointed out the Senior section on the menu. and took our drink orders. The coffee was your average diner coffee and was kept full the entire meal. I ordered the chicken fried steak from the regular menu with a single pancake and my wife ordered pigs-in-a-blanket from the senior menu. Pigs-in-a-blanket consisted of two rather large sausage links wrapped in two large slightly crispy pancakes with butter and syrup. My wife was only able to eat one plus the second sausage link. My chicken fried steak came on three platers: a huge piece of chicken fried steak covered with sausage gravy, a plate of hash browns and two eggs, and a single large pancake on its own plate with butter and syrup. I moved the eggs onto the pancake. The eggs were over easy. I ordered over medium. The pancake was your typical large diner pancake. Hash browns were well prepared; but, not very warm. The chicken fried steak was about the size of two that you would get in most restaurants. It was very good. Maybe second or third best that I have enjoyed in the Greater Bend area. We will be going back to Jake's Diner. PS, I took the remaining pigs-in-a-blanket pancake and most of the hash browns home for the chickens. The hash browns lasted about 15 seconds. The pancake was gone within a minute. The chickens want us to go back to Jake's Diner, too.

Yelp
When I moved to Bend in 1977, Jakes was already a legend in the community, for its large portions, friendly atmosphere, and good service. Fast forward 45 years... It had been a couple of years since we had eaten at Jake's, so I took my wife there for brunch this morning. How VERY disappointing! The service was lousy (I didn't even leave a tip, and we had to find our own take-home boxes after waiting for over 5 minutes trying to catch our waitress' eye - in vain). There was no offer of coffee refills, even though the dining room was not that busy and there were 4 servers . My "Reuben" sandwich was possibly the WORST I have EVER had - ANYwhere! It looked more like a sauerkraut sandwich on rye that someone had accidently spilled a few shreds of pastrami into. For my $16.10, I also got a double handful of tater tots. (It's a good, cheap way to fool the customer into thinking that they are getting their money's worth.) and a single dill pickle slice. Reubens are one of my favorite sandwiches, and in my 78 years on earth, I have grown accustomed to them actually containing pastrami slices - several pastrami slices. Not so with Jakes. There may have been a total of one ounce of meat in the entire sandwich. No slices, only shreds, outnumbered 3 to one by sauerkraut between the soggy slices of bread. According to Jakes, evidently the half-portion shown in the photo is worth $8.05, but certainly not to me! When we were checking out, the cashier (perhaps the owner) asked me if everything was ok. I told him that I was quite disappointed in the meat content of my Reuben. He acted as though he hadn't heard me, made no reply, and handed me my change without a thank you. We will NOT be returning1

Yelp
My wife and I have eaten at Jake's on several occasions. The food has always been fresh and delicious. The service has been great every time we've eaten there. The wait staff is courteous and friendly. The staff is, also attentive.

Steve L.

Yelp
Prices are out of control!!! $9.60 for hot chocolate!?!?!?! $9 for a side of bacon or sausage!?!?!? SERIOUSLY? $60+ for my wife and I to have breakfast?!?!?! CRAZY!!!!
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Our meal was delicious. My husband had the Cascade Burger with truly excellent tots and I had the Hot Turkey Sandwich off of the Senior Menu (available to everyone). We will definitely return.

Yelp
Went to Jake's Diner for breakfast this morning the first time. I had the half and half,( biscuit's and gravy with Hash browns" covered in Sauce gravy). The restaurant was full when I arrived, only two available tables. The room was alive with conversation from patrons. Wait staff were very attentive. Pat took great care of us, and was amazing. Food was delicious, great value and portions. Delicious meal and coffee. A++. I'm learned that Jake's serves the veteran community in the Bend area with a Band of Brothers program. There is an American flag properly, and proudly displayed in the corner of the dining room, and the walls are covered with photos of celebrities, and veterans. From now on when I visit the Bend area, if Jake's diner is open, it's a must stop in for a meal place for me. Thank you Jake and Crew!

Yelp
Great place. Friendly staff, awesome food. First time I could ever cut Chicken Fried steak with a fork. It was delicious. Generous portions.

Yelp
Best diner in bend, great service the cakes are amazing family owned spot!!! Must go! Truckers delight. Great breakfast must go
google avatar

Shanna K.

Yelp
Wow this place was GREAT! Great service and great food! A little on the pricey side but totally worth it. Home fries are DELICIOUS!

Anna M.

Yelp
Great food ...although it was quite along wait. So if you plan here make sure with enough time so you're not starving. For me it was totally worth it. But I was starving for the long wait. And it first comes, no reservation. Food great !!!!
google avatar

Don W.

Yelp
Good old-fashioned American truckstop food lots of it hotter than hell endless coffee, friendly service. Certainly not the most healthy, but the biscuits and gravy are truly out of this world. The plates are served so hot you can't touch them and the amount of gravy is excellent. The sausage content is what you would put if you were making it they don't skimp.
google avatar

Yelp
Visiting Bend after riding around Crater Lake. This is a neighborhood diner that honors our veterans. Perhaps why the breakfast tasted so good. We shared the stacker (hash browns, bacon, egg over easy, and hollandaise sauce). Excellent and plenty for two senior citizens! Our waiter Terry was great. If she hasn't gotten a raise lately, she deserves one. They host a "band of brothers" breakfast event for the local vets every Monday which was great to see. It seems everyone here talks to each other adding to the "neighborhood" vibe. We will definitely be back next year and will try their lunch which we hear from our neighbors (sitting next to us) is excellent also. Definitely a high recommend!

Yelp
As a veteran I choose Jake's as my first choice for breakfast ! The way this diner chooses to embrace those who have served, I salute them. The food is great, the portions are out of control ( you might ask for the child's portion ). The wait staff are pros in making everyone at home. Don't worry if there's a line. It's worth the wait

Michael C.

Yelp
Got seated immediately, but then it took 45+ minutes to get food. My group didn't receive any water, and when I had asked for milk and sugar for coffee, I only received milk, and had to ask for sugar again. And the price is RIDICULOUS. It is cheap diner food, and they make a plate of eggs and one side cost $15. And the drink prices are ridiculous, with 1 small coffee being $4.50, and a small apple juice being $5.50!!! For a 12oz glass of juice! Our total was a staggering $100 for 4 people. Absolutely ridiculous. Overall, I wont be coming back unless they can find a happy medium of making prices lower, or compensating with bigger servings.

Hali O.

Yelp
We had a long wait to get a table, then waited an hour and a half to get our food. My coffee mug was visibly dirty, with fingerprints, lipstick, and old food crusted on the outside. My meal was delicious when I finally got it. I got the black and blue Benedict which could have been a real gamble. The steak was tasty, sauce was cheesy, and my hash browns were super crispy. But the person across from me said his eggs were ice cold, and his toast was literally burnt black. The place could also use a deep cleaning and some updated decor. Everything looked very dusty and cobwebby, like eating at your backwoods bachelor uncle's rundown farmhouse.

Mike N.

Yelp
My olast review in 2019 said I was not going to visit again. Well I decided to see if anything had changed int he last 5 years. Nope, I was just as disappointed today as I was then. Jake's what has happened to you ?
google avatar

Wendy M.

Yelp
Wow! Amaaaazing breakfast! I had the stuffed hash browns and the hubby had the Dad's Stack - chicken fried steak. Might be the best breakfast I've ever had. We're definitely coming back and bringing friends! The staff were super friendly and efficient. Very large portions too. Definitely found our new favorite place!

Mike M.

Yelp
We were told by a few locals that Jake's was a must-try breakfast during our stay in Bend. While it was good, and portions were large, it wasn't necessarily off the charts. The staff were friendly and attentive, the place had a good vibe and we didn't have to wait too long. I'd go again if I were in the neighborhood, but would necessarily make a special trip.
google avatar

Kash K.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the customer service was great! For two people and an appetizer it was about $40.

Lisa S.

Yelp
I only got a Togo order but the lady at the register was super sweet and when I brought my food back to work I was amazed at how much they give and how delish it was I'll definitely be back!!!
google avatar

Bill D.

Yelp
Larger, LARGE servings! If you are on a diet, this place may not be your best choice! One of our party had the Chicken Fried Steak and it was the largest any of us had seen. Wow! No, he didn't eat it all. Service is great and served with a super attitude. Will be back for sure!

Yelp
Only come if you have time to wait and arent starving. We were seared fairly quickly on a Saturday but once we ordered about 10 min later, food took an hour. My son liked his plate full of hash browns cooked crisp, bacon and eggs. I had biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs and hash browns. The biscuits seemed just soft inside, and couldnt taste much flavor.didnt love it. The gravy was good and the eggs were done decently. My husband ordered carnitas omelette which was good but he didnt like the canned tasting salsa it came with. He loves salsa so it was a let down. Its diner food boasting large portionsbased on older Yelp photos, but my portion was just right size. I think the food is decent but nothing to rave about.

Mark B.

Yelp
Wrong food, not cooked like I asked, server never came by to check if everything was okay even after I pushed my full plate of food to the opposite side of the table... I left my food, paid, and walked out. The cashier didn't even ask if my meal was good. Portions keep getting smaller. Not going back.

S D.

Yelp
Always good food. Friendly staff, even on super busy holiday weekends. We are never disappointed and have been coming here for many years.
google avatar

Susan N.

Yelp
Very popular spot! Large portions. Fun retro vibe. Efficient service. Value for the money was not there for me. I don't get out much, so I might be expecting too much, so take this with a grain of salt. Bacon and eggs for $20.00. Seems high. My toast was soggy , slathered with whatever is used for butter. And, the bacon was poor. The eggs were perfect, and my dad would have loved the crispy hashbrowns. I saw other diners enjoying gigantic pancakes and mountainous biscuits and gravy, so do check it out for yourself. My curiosity is satisfied.
google avatar

Josh C.

Yelp
Huge portions at great prices. Quality delicious food, everything you'd want from a diner. Plus the people that run it are really great people. Outstanding service!

Marie M.

Yelp
The food is great and the owner cares enough to follow up with customers. These days it is rare to find management or an owner that is willing to go the extra mile. Thank you for taking the time. *FYI the Hollandaise sauce is NOT GF!

Mike ..

Yelp
Food and service were excellent! I would definitely recommend for breakfast. I had the full breakfast with French toast.
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
One of the "hole in the wall" delicious breakfast restaurants that aren't nearby touristy locations in Bend, OR. They have a large menu that is reasonably priced in addition to large portions (even for a small omelet I could barely finish). Staff members are very welcoming and from what I understood... they serve and represent a lot of veterans. I definitely recommend visiting here at least once if you're in the Bend area. It's a little far from all the other population places, but definitely worth it if you're looking for lesser wait times, and delicious food before hitting the roads again. I ORDERED: Hollandaise Omelet & Everything Omelet

Yelp
If you're looking for a great, country kitchen, large portion, diner to fill you up, this is the place! Recommended by friends we stopped in for breakfast while we were in town. There's a very large dining room that we quickly found a booth to get comfy in. It has a homey feel with a rustic/county decor. Perfect for the area! Our server shortly came over to take our drink orders. When our drinks arrived she also took our food order. Our food was served in less than 10 minutes and there was A LOT of food! We ordered the biscuits and gravy with bacon (I sub-ed the eggs for hash browns) and the country fried steak with biscuits and gravy. Everything from the biscuits to the bacon and steak were nicely cooked with lots of flavor. The portions were huge and sooooo good! Even the ice tea was a very large cup. We love it when we don't empty a drink before the food even arrives. We weren't able to take our left overs with us, since we're traveling for the week, so we felt like we wasted a lot of food. We'll definitely stop in again next time we're in the area. Thanks for the great breakfast!

Yelp
Oh how the mighty have fallen. I made the mistake of going to Jake's today, Sunday. I know they say they are short staffed and post wait times for food can be over an hour...which they are. I went for breakfast about 10:30 and got my order around noon. Look, I'm forgiving. But there is no excuse for these wait times especially when that wait staff...despite no orders getting filled promptly...is literally bumping into each other. The problem is the kitchen, which I was able to view clearly. They had no sense of urgency and spent more time standing around joking as the wait staff floundered. And as we waited for our food, I watched a few of them eat and drink back there WHILE COOKING. Must be a perk to eat fries as you cook and plate them. I wonder if this is up to health dept standards? And watching them rub their nose, scratch their heads, and wipe their faces as they cooked without washing after made me question what I was eating. I will say, the older waitresses busted a hump trying to keep things going. They were let down by lack of leadership in the back. Frankly, Jake's is going downhill fast and only the diehards will keep going there. It's just not worth the wait to get mediocre food and sporty service.
google avatar

Robin S.

Yelp
Jake's is a venerable Bend institution that has a large fan base, from what I gather on social media. Biscuits and gravy with sausage: fairly tasty and a very huge portion - something they advertise and it's true. The biscuits might not be the best but because they're drowned in gravy (as they should be), I guess it doesn't matter so much. Good sausage. Noisy room, to the point it was getting uncomfortable. Service was OK. I sat unattended for a bit while several servers were either chatting amongst themselves or doing routine tasks. Once my server finally came over to deliver a menu, it was fine. Reasonable prices.
google avatar

Caroline M.

Yelp
One of our favorite haunts in Bend. Hit this great place every time we travel there. Breakfast is amazing and they have such a welcoming staff, you feel like you're at a family members home. I even bought a hat

Yelp
Just your typical diner with amazing staff and delicious food. Portions are very generous. We had the "Jakes...something" , basically everything you could want. Split it between the two of us and still couldn't finish. Full for the day, and a nap.
