Best Seafood Restaurants on Massachusetts’ South Shore and Greater Boston - Eater Boston

"Located just steps away from the famous Nantasket Beach, Jake’s Seafood has served the communities of Hull, Hingham, and Cohasset freshly caught lobsters and other seafood for more than 70 years, making it one of the best seafood spots on the South Shore. The restaurant and market has been family-run for decades and, while there have been some renovations and price increases over the years, the quality of the food and service have remained the same. The fried options, including a whole belly clam platter, are particularly popular. Parts of the indoor and outdoor dining areas have a view of the bay and can be a good spot to sip wine while enjoying a Hull sunset." - Valerie Li Stack

Nice location. I’d never been to Nantasket, it’s a very nice beach. Jake’s must do good business because it is really the only seafood venue of its kind in the area. Great location right across from the beach and there are waterfront views from most of the restaurant. Fun old school New England fish restaurant vibes. The lobster roll was average size and the meat was nicely cooked. Not very sweet but not much can be done about that. Oysters were nice and fresh. Crab cakes were also nice. Probably my favorite part of the meal was the clam chowder - great whole chunks of clam. One of the best bowls I’ve had in a while. I thought for the location and the quality of the food Jake’s was an excellent value. We had guests visiting from the west coast who wanted good New England seafood and they loved it here.

6/20/24 vacation Loved Jake's, they had a great menu, staff was friendly and efficient, my only complaint, my dish seafood casserole was watery and bland, no seasoning at all not enough crumb topping, and overcooked the broccoli was perfect, I would still go bk, just order something different.

Google
To all my gluten free folks who love fried seafood this is the place to go to. Everything is gluten free! The batter could use a bit of seasoning/flavor but I'd still go back. I had the fisherman's platter and it was good. Indoor and outdoor seating right on the water. Nice experience.

Google
The atmosphere was pretty nice. The windows were open while we were there, but the breeze was a bit too strong to sit comfortably at the table. The clam chowder was on point. Unfortunately, that was the only part of the meal that was good. I got the fried seafood platter and my wife got the fish and chips. This was some of the most bland food I’ve eaten in a while. If it wasn’t for having tarter and cocktail sauce, the food would have been inedible. Based on the other good reviews, I’m hoping that today was just a fluke.

Google
This is my absolute favorite restaurant in Hull even though they open seasonally. The food is consistently fresh, the fried seafood is fried in clean fresh oil, everything I've tried has been delicious, and the service is wonderful. I've gone mostly on weekends, but I've visited on some week nights as well. They're pretty packed on weekends and I've waited up to an hour before for a table. I usually come here knowing that it will take some time to be seated, and to me, it's always worth it in the end. I order the jumbo cocktail shrimp, the clam chowder, poke, and calamari are good as well. I've tried a few seafood entrees like the casserole and salmon, and they've all been delicious. I try to come out here as many times as possible during the summer!

Google
I really wish I would have remembered to get photos of all of our food. The service here was amazing, even with the restaurant very busy we were seated and served in a reasonable amount of time. They have an amazing menu filled with all things seafood. My husband had the fish and chips and I had the Lemon Garlic Shrimp pasta. Both meals were delicious and worth every penny. The portions were also huge! We visited with our friends and our children and we were very happy that they also had a children's menu available. If you're visiting this area and looking for an amazing selection of seafood, this is the spot you're looking for.

Google
“When the restaurant is a 9/10 ..but the host sucks!!” A little harsh but it was for shock value. This was my second occasion at this restaurant, once by myself, another with a friend and both times I’ve received off-putting vibes from the host who I assume to be the owner at the front taking names. Both times he seemed to begrudgingly acknowledge my existence and not-at-all-subtly looked down with a deep sigh before looking up and curtly asking my party size… it felt like such an intrusion you’d think he was paying me to be there! I’ve read other TripAdvisor reviews who also commented on the host who appeared like they didn’t want to be there. What (almost) made up for the discomfort was the reasonably priced food, fresh ingredients, overall friendly service and the bread pudding! Oysters: 8/10 bread pudding with the bourbon glaze 9/10: one of the best I’ve had Chowder: 9/10! One of the best I’ve had! Crab cakes: 7.5/10: meaty & has potential but the oil did not taste fresh/clean Lobster roll: 4/10 not skimpy, but cold lobster on toasted buttered bread? 🚮 Sean and Sean (both of my servers ironically had the same name 😂😂) were honestly rockstars and super attentive! Staff overall were very friendly and nice. Window or Outdoor patio seating during the sunset is a must! It’s unfortunate that it looks like it’ll be a place I just order dessert to-go and take my business elsewhere. Just didn’t sit well with my spirit, especially on Juneteenth.

Google
This was our first visit and we were treated wonderfully. My granddaughter had a birthday and they let us bring the cake and they served it. I had the swordfish and my wife had the lobster roll. We also had the tuna poke as an appetizer, it was delicious. Service was excellent, both warm and friendly. The view of the bay and Marina alone is worth a visit.

Yelp
This is my new favorite restaurant! Truly had such a great time here with my bf. The interior is quite large and even they don't take reservations, we had no wait on a Sunday afternoon. I don't remember our server's name, but she was a fabulous and nice woman who made our lunch great! The menu was large and extensive, so we had a hard time narrowing down what we wanted. We got a variety of fried seafood and grilled swordfish. The onion ring portion was huge even though we got a half order, and they were hot and delicious! The amount of seafood we got was huge, too. My favorite was the fried scallops. We also shared the grilled swordfish, which was probably the best thing we ate. I don't really eat a lot of grilled fish, but this was so juicy and fresh. We probably wouldn't order the fried seafood again only because it was too many fried things at once, but would highly recommend the fish. Definitely want to come back to try the lobster rolls. They also have a fish market at the front, and everything looks super fresh.

Yelp
I want to love Jake's because of the location and ambience but have yet to have a good experience there. The food is fine but certainly not the pinnacle of seafood that locals gush over. They can be a little curt, gruff and almost make you feel like they did you a favor by putting your name on the list. We had an experience recently where all four members of our party got violently sick a few hours after eating there (and now other stops before or after). I called to give them a heads up and was chewed out by the person saying that in no way could it have been food poisoning due to the timing. We didn't want money back but just thought they would want to know. I guess it's fine if you are by the beach and want a restaurant that's not one of the places on the main strip, but there are many options on the South Shore that match the quality and service with the price.

Yelp
Great spot, but very popular. We ate on Friday night and parking was a challenge. The food was well executed. The mussels were plump, but the broth needed more garlic. Tuna was very fresh and the fried shrimp were large.
google avatar

Gary P.

Yelp
Holy crap. You're gonna need to rob a bank to eat here. $37 for a quarter pound lobster roll. And they put on their menu that it's a generous quarter pound of lobster meat. I'd keep that a secret lol. Fried clams we good for $32, but fish and chips had a small portion of fish for $26. Service was fair. View was great. One and done for us.
google avatar

Gloria G.

Yelp
Keep driving! This was my final try. I won't go back. I I hoped to believe the fans. The very small portion of fried clams were chewy. Tuna crudo was tasteless. Onion rings needed something besides ketchup. Fries were good lol.

Julie C.

Yelp
Beautiful place, service was very good and friendly. The fried platter was disappointing though. Onion rings were really bland and fried clams were just ok.
google avatar

Keila L.

Yelp
The service was awful! From the moment we sat down the bartender threw the menus at us and rolled her eyes. She was rude throughout the service and was mean to us. She rushed out out of the door. It is unfortunate since we have enjoyed coming here in the past.

Yelp
We visited one Sunday 6p, with no wait to be seated and plenty of parking. Service was timely, attentive, and overall fantastic! Price point $18-25 for most entrees, on par with surrounding establishments. Ambiance was lovely. The overlooking harbor is stunning. Food (4/5): - clam chowder: a meal highlight, not too heavy, and oh so savory - onion rings: delicious, lightly battered, non greasy, generous in portion size - fish and chips: very fresh and exceedingly well-cooked haddock, light, slightly underseasoned but still memorable - popcorn shrimp: fresh, nicely seasoned, well-portioned, but not particularly memorable - key lime pie: also solid, nicely balanced tart and sweetness, could have used a bit more butter on the crust, but still a very nice conclusion to the meal

Yelp
Fresh seafood by the water is never a bad thing. Jake's is a seasonal seafood place beloved by locals --- and I know why. Service is friendly and attentive. Right on the water, it's a great location to take in the harbor and experience consistently fresh and well seasoned seafood. My personal favorite is the grilled swordfish sandwich. That said, I would keep it simple here -- their more extravagant entrees and some of the landlubber options are less successful (as is the crab cake).

Claudette N.

Yelp
Wanted fried seafood and because my husband has celiac headed to Jake's for their gluten free food. They have dedicated fryers. Ordered fried clams with bellies and a seafood plate (clams, scallops, shrimp and haddock). Both meals come with fries and coleslaw. Our orders were taken promptly and the food came out quickly and very hot. Clams were excellent and husband said the best seafood on his plate were clams. Other seafood was good. I'm not a fan of most coleslaw but theirs was very good-fresh with right amount of dressing. Jake's is one step above a seafood shack. Most tables have a view of the water, booths and tables. There is also a fish market at the entrance.

Carol O.

Yelp
This place has a great view and a congenial staff. My complaint is that an entree of baked sea scallops was served with the muscle still in tact which I find amazing! Also overcooked.

Robert T.

Yelp
Good to atmosphere Good view Food was excellent service was superb and I also got a chance to meet the owner very gracious.
google avatar

Anastasiya P.

Yelp
Was pleasantly surprised by this place! Not sure why it has no 5 stars. Food was super fresh and tasty. We were super stuffed by it and couldn't stop eating it was so good... The drinks were ok but not bad at all. Will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Sorry back to a 2.0 overall Haddock Fried shrimp buffalo sauce and blue cheese still a sold 3.9-4.0

Susan M.

Yelp
Had the lobster bisque. Very disappointing, tasted like tomato soup and had zero lobster meat. Onion rings were good.

Maddie L.

Yelp
service was great was ready right away and the guy even created a handle out of the bag. food was good also would definitely return here.

Yelp
A very rude owner, menu needs change not everyone eats fish. More current items. Salads are very hoo hum. Update menu

Yelp
The seafood restaurant in Nantasket, bar none. Granted there aren't that many choices, but perhaps this place, a decades-long staple, has rightfully choked off all competitors. Go here, if you seek: -A pleasing view over the inland water, with sun twinkling over its waves, through large windows -A spacious restaurant where large fish unexplainably hang from above its sloped high ceiling, shaped like an inverted boat hull. -A ?sherry-heavy lobster bisque -A just plain super fired clams platter--yes that was the hands down winder. A light batter, sweet and salty clam flavor, like eating the ocean, pleasantly reminiscent of an inadvertent rinse of seawater in your mouth as a child. ANd all in a good way. No greasy flour heavy stuff. Just great. And pleasant, just the business, waitstaff. Clearly a family atmosphere still amongst all. Good fish, good stop. If only a bit of the ancient coaster was still present....

Yelp
We went to Jakes last weekend. As always, Jakes didn't disappoint! The steamed mussels are divine! The sauce is just addicting...definitely a family favorite. We also got the raw oysters, shrimp po boy, Caesar salad, chicken breast meal, asian glazed salmon x 2, fried strips, onion rings and chicken finger meal. The baked chicken is my favorite. The chef always makes it how I like it, well done. I really appreciate that. There was also a cocktail or two thrown in! lol! The food was delicious, still not a fan of the gluten free coating but that's ok. Sean was our waiter. He said he has been there 16 years, truthfully he looked too young to be working anywhere for 16 years but I digress! I don't know how we haven't met him before. For a while we were going two - three times a week. He was completely on point. Charismatic, attentive all around great! Truth be told, walking into Jakes is like walking into a relatives home. The family is so friendly and welcoming, the wait staff are all fantastic. Its a wonderful dining experience! Worth the drive! We will go one more time before they close for the season...actually maybe twice!

Yelp
First place I always want to go when we hit the south shore. Fresh steamers and awesome fish! They've been here 75 years for a reason!
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Great views. Lovely atmosphere. I recommend the clam chowdah and the scallops. So yummy!
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
The views are great here and the restaurant has been bright and clean each time we've come here. The takeaway deli section is always great. The guy is always friendly and super helpful and the fish/seafood is always delicious. If you eat in the restaurant... the service is hit or miss. The proteins are always good, but the sides are just kind of MEH/mediocre... as are the cocktails. For the price point I'd expect better sides/better food in general.

Yelp
Visiting relatives in the area and a favorite with the locals. Great selections and great food. Great service too. Very casual atmosphere.

Yelp
Best seafood restaurant on the South Shore in my opinion. Very family friendly, great service, great atmosphere and great food. What more can you ask for. Also, just about everything can be made gluten free.

Yelp
Jake's has a great atmosphere and wonderful view! It's located very close to the beaches so it's a great place to grab lunch or dinner after a day at the beach. Our waiter was very friendly and welcoming and we were seated immediately when we walked in on a Monday (Memorial day) at around 4:30pm. It was quite warm out so we opted for a seat indoors and we had a beautiful view of the water from our table by the window. For starters, we ordered the Portuguese style calamari and the Lobster bisque- both were delicious! Next, we ordered the Lobster roll and the Seafood casserole, both of which came with 2 sides. We honestly thought the lobster roll was very average compared to others we have had in New England and at a market price of $39, it's not something we would order again. The seafood in the seafood casserole was definitely fresh but we weren't fans of the mashed potatoes. If you're there for the atmosphere or a patio with views of the water, this is the place for you!
google avatar

Bryant F.

Yelp
The bartender Emily is super nice! The food was ok. We'll we good the seafood casserole. It doesn't fill you but it's just decent. I probably wouldn't order again. Legal's casserole was way better. But I'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great experience! We were originally going to go to the Parrot but the less than stellar reviews and limited menu made us consider other places along the water and glad we did and decided on Jake's. Our server Linda was great! We had a seat by the window inside, it was beautiful, they had the windows open so it was like you were outside but the screens kept the bugs off. We got the Cajun Swordfish tips and oysters for apps. The swordfish was amazing! I love the sauce on it, I can enjoy spice or not; hot doesn't bother me too much but I wouldn't consider these that spicy more of a 2 on a 1-5 spice scale. My date said he really enjoyed the oysters (I didn't try any so can't comment) We got bourbon swordfish with side Caesar salads and sweet potato fries; the salad was fresh and had quality anchovies on it (they were optional) our swordfish steaks were delish (but it tasted closer to a honey mustard than a bourbon to me) and our fries were great! For drinks we got a lemon drop martini and a bloody captain (my date didn't like all the additional garnishes in the bloody but loved the bloody and it packed a spicy punch!) and my lemon drop was delish as well! Great date spot, classy but casual. Would definitely recommend and would love to go back again!

Yelp
I've been here 4 times in the past 18 months & have always left pleased! Asian Glazed Salmon - so good I got it twice! 5 stars Cajun Shrimp Po Boy - great portion, great flavor. 5 stars (only item I have pics of, sorry) Lobster Roll - a bit smaller than I'd expect for the price. Jake's doesn't mix the mayo or butter with the lobster which is odd, but there's a disclaimer on the menu so can't knock off point for that. 4.5 stars Oysters - fresh every time! 5 stars Onion Rings - a must get. 6 out of 5 stars! I've sat at the bar twice and had the same bartender twice. Kathy is amazing! Quick, personable & thorough! Will keep coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
Had a simple meal of chowder and a Greek salad with seared scallops and it was absolutely delicious. My father had the fried scallop plate and said the same -- added that the breading was super light and not greasy at all. Food was fresh, waitstaff was attentive, drinks were refreshing. Amazon view. Really the best seafood, simply prepared to let the freshness shine through.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Awesome service. Great food. Phenomenal with gluten free options and allergy awareness.

Al P.

Yelp
Always great food at Jakes so I was surprised at the chowder I had. It was watery and had very little in it but a few potatoes. I hope it was just a bad night.

Charles M.

Yelp
This place is wonderful..its too bad they close for the winter months..cant wait for them to open April 1st..2024
google avatar

Suzanne C.

Yelp
Questionned why a side Caesar (w mixed greens, not romaine) and grilled scallops would cost $42.69. Waiter said that's what we are told to charge. Receipt said I had dinner w no second side. I wasn't offered for told. Called from outside and asked how much a scallop dinner was and was told $26. I explained situation, was told to come in. Woman at front desk said I had a dinner then had me go out to my car to get my phone to show picture of what I got then was told that I had full dinner w no second side. I said I wasn't offered that and she said sorry. Seriously...

Sean D.

Yelp
This is an old family favorite so we took mom for Mother's Day. Service was excellent and ambience was great but I was surprised at the low quality of the food. I ordered oysters which had clearly been pre-shucked and refrigerated. The seared ahi tuna on my salad was flavorless. I did see "farm raised tuna" on a menu which I didn't even know was a thing. Perhaps this was used on my salad, not sure. If I can see the ocean from the restaurant the fish has GOT to be fresh and locally caught. I saw a ton of farm raised salmon on the menu which I do not understand. I'm sorry Jake's but I'm not into farm raised seafood.

Yelp
Love this place! Incredible location right on the water. Staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Fish was incredibly fresh and delicious. Onion rings were excellent, you can tell they're freshly made in house.

Yelp
Last Friday around 7:00pm, I went to this restaurant to have dinner. There was a long line on that day. I understand it was a beautiful day. That is why there are a lot of people waiting. Eventually, it is our turn soon. However, there was a couple just came in. We thought they would tell the receptionist their names. Then they had to wait. Unfortunately for us, the receptionist took them right away and walked them to the table. We felt so unfair but we did not want to make a big deal about it. I said to the people I went with that I would never come back to this restaurant again because of their service. After a little while, she came and took us to our table. I then asked what her name is. She said her name is Rory. We do not know how the manager of this restaurant will react to his/her receptionist's services.

Ruth C.

Yelp
Birthday celebration at Jakes in Hull. Great water view during an electrical Storm. Getting seated was terrible. They don't take reservations and wouldn't let us op Put our name in until our whole party arrived. Many people came in after us and got seated right away but because we were a party of 6 we had to wait an additional 45 minutes after our whole party arrived. Service was friendly but not overly knowledgeable. The clam chowder was good not overly seasoned whereas I never use pepper but added quite a bit. The lobster bisque I only tasted so I don't know how much lobster was in it but tasted like burnt tomato paste and not a hint of sherry. Four people were happy with their meals whom had broiled fish. The short ribs were just ok. The real disappointment and I wish I took a picture was the fisherman platter. What an absolute disgrace. We added on the lobster and was told it was huge more than enough for two . For $50.00 there were 4 clams,4 medium size scallops or 2 cut in half , about 2 ounces of fish smaller than my index finger curled up 4 pieces of lobster the same size as the scallop, and 6 shrimp. The food came in a 4x6 toaster oven tin. There was so little food it all sat on a tray in one layer including the fries. We did have management bring us more food but the owner was very defensive about it and dismissed me as he walked away. Sadly not their fault but because of the conflict I lost my appetite and didn't eat. Then the birthday cake came out with the waitress saying my lighter is not working. She put the cake in front of the birthday person with the unlit candle and our utensils. We had to call her back to retrieve the spoons. This place is not what they think they are and are definitely over rated

Yelp
Jake's was the shining star of my recent trip to Nantasket Beach in Hull! My partner and I were craving seafood and planned to get something along the beach but Jake's popped up as a recommended restaurant just a couple blocks away so we decided to try and get a table before the evening rush. We sat outside on the deck and had a really pleasant view of the bay and Rocky Neck. We also got the treat of some golden hour sun! The staff was great, everyone was really nice and accommodating, asking us if we needed anything and how the food was. Our server went MIA once but it was starting to get busier inside so we didn't mind too bad. It also took a bit of time to get our food but it was totally worth the wait! For an appetizer, we got the Sautéed Swordfish Tips and they were amazing! So tender and perfectly cooked, pleasantly flavorful, and a surprisingly good zing to the Cajun spice. We absolutely loved these. We also got a Caesar salad that was delicious! For an entree I ordered the Asian Glazed Salmon. The piece of salmon was huge and cooked perfectly, with a great crisp to the skin side. The teriyaki glaze was also really flavorful. The portion was huge and exceeded my expectations! My partner got the Lazy Lobster Casserole and thought it was really tasty. Very good portion of lobster meat. The market price was a little steep but it was worth it for an authentic seaside dining experience. The side of French fries we got was also great, not too salty and perfectly crisp. Overall, Jake's was excellent, we'd absolutely go there again and should definitely be the go-to spot for anyone looking for great food in or around Hull, MA.

Yelp
This was our last evening in Nantasket Beach and we had driven by and decided to stop. It was their first day opening again and they were ready with spacing, sanitizer and antibac in several locations. They had plexiglass between all booths. The staff was so friendly and accommodating answering questions and just making everyone feel right at home. Now for the best part! The seafood is amazing! There is a great assortment! I had delicious crab cakes and lobster bisque that was delicious but only small bits of meat. My daughters battered shrimp were large and delicious too. My grandson wanted fish and chips and gave it a 2 thumbs up! We went to the hotel very full and very happy! They also had a big counter full of fresh seafood that seems to be busy also. Their products looked very fresh. I strongly recommend stopping there is you are in the area!

Yelp
Always go to jakes at the start of season as a sign of the end of winter. Love the food and atmosphere here. Service is always great.

Yelp
Local staple ... clearly they know what they're doing. The menu ... VAST. Looking to feed any taste, ranging from old standards to new twists ...farm raised ? Really, you are 50' from the ocean. You NEED the farm? Ok, Ok back to the food. First, the warm rolls came out with the water service. Nice. Got us thinking about eating. No mention of drinks? We were a table of eight adults...hello! The few regulars jumped on raw oysters and clams the rest reverted to salads for starters. Entrees ranged from salmon to sautéed soft shell crab and grilled swordfish. Drinks...not a bad idea. Then wine, a beer and some bubbles arrived ... a quarter the way into the meal. As the meal progressed grumblings about freshness of the oysters, lettuce choices for the caesar, mashed potatoes tasting like boxed, too few shrimp rumbled around the table met with great french fries, delicious fried calamari, over the top mussels et al. All served in the 9 star setting sun over the bay, sea air and warm friendly service. Will be back for an upgrade.

Sara R.

Yelp
This place was immaculate everyone was so friendly. The food was amazing!! Can't wait to go back !!

Michael O.

Yelp
The best seafood around! Strongly recommend! Half the price of a lobster dinner in the city

Marybeth O.

Yelp
Food is a little pricey. We ordered cosmos very weak not even worth it to drink it. We were brought chowder and we didn't order it so they took it away. Lunch was good but was dinner prices

Sean C.

Yelp
Delicious!!!! If you sit at bar to eat or outside food is too notch !!!! Visit hull in the summer by land or sea plenty of parking for both

Jason T.

Yelp
Living in Hull, and born and raised here, we go to Jake's in season when they are open. Always crowded because they serve great sea food. People come from all over to enjoy the great food and beautiful location over looking Hull bay across what use to be Paragon Park. Go just before sunset and enjoy the beautiful views. Try and get a window seat. If you have not experienced Jake's , you are missing the best sea food on the South Shore. Worth the drive from anywhere!

Olivia W.

Yelp
Great food and great view. Waitress was so nice and accommodating. Only complaint was the lobster bisque that didn't have one piece of lobster and tasted like tomato soup. Other than that the food was great. We shared a lobster, steamers, chowder, corn and mashed potato's. So good! And the key lime pie is to die for!

Matt D.

Yelp
Great Restaurant I've knew the original owner not sure if he's still there but what a Great Great Meal they put out I've long moved away but it's so worth the trip I will be back down there this Summer gotta have a Baked Stuffed Lobster from Jakes it's the Best around

Yelp
Went for lunch, sat inside to hot. Nice airy room with screens open to the ocean. Jacqueline G was our server. She was fast and efficient. We got some Oysters first. Then I got a fish sandwich. Cooked perfect with a crunchy batter and a flacky fillet on brioche. Overall a great lunch! Thanks Jake!

Yelp
Fantastic experience here. Everything was super fresh. Mussels, popcorn shrimp, and oysters were all great! The Portuguese style calamari were also a hit with the calamari fans. Shrimp scampi was awesome- buttery garlicky goodness, fresh shrimp. & The key lime pie with whipped cream on top was excellent for dessert! So calming to dine outside, by the water too.
