Where to Get a Great Steak in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"Laid-back Jak’s remains a West Seattle neighborhood favorite, thanks to a selection of wonderfully tender cuts, such as the Nebraska beef dry- or wet-aged for 28 days, served with an array of hearty sides. Those on the outskirts of Seattle can seek out the Laurelhurst location for a similar experience." - Megan Hill

Google
Jak's is an amazing spot for brunch. The place is huge, and even on a Saturday morning, two of us were seated right away without a reservation. The food was absolutely delicious—everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. Our server didn’t come around often, but that was totally fine since we had everything we needed. The food alone makes this place worth coming back to, and we definitely will be. Highly recommend!

Google
Just tried the new location - have been to the old location as well as was a regular at the Laurelhurst location before it closed. The atmosphere is nice and the server was very friendly. The food definitely is not as good- menu is very different, the steak was already sliced (?!), the portions seemed smaller, the UFO mashed potatoes seemed watery, no sourdough bread, salad or veggies with your steak anymore. Even the fries that came with the cheeseburger weren’t as good. Thank goodness the Vesper drink was still good. I would give this a 3.5 stars for food.

Google
JaK’s Grill in West Seattle is a hidden gem for seafood lovers! I recently dined there to celebrate a birthday and was thoroughly impressed. The standout dish was the steelhead trout on a potato cake—an exquisite combination of flavors and textures that left me craving more. Complementing the meal was their delightful nonalcoholic wine, which added a refreshing touch to the evening. The ambience was warm and inviting, making it the perfect spot for a celebration.

Google
Wife and I are visiting Seattle and decided to try here for our 2 year anniversary. We were seated promptly in the upper deck which felt cozy with an overlook of the street. Steaks were delivered quickly and were the correct temperature. They were flavorful and tender. For dessert we got the chocolate chip a la mode which was hot and tasty.

Google
I chose this restaurant based on reviews.First time here, and I was disappointed. I made a reservation and still had to wait an additional 20 minutes to be seated. Hostess is doing way too much. If she had help, more guests would have been seated quicker. Second, I ordered the filet mignon. While it was cooked as ordered, there was no flavor. Very bland. My hubby ordered Tomahawk, that was great! The only great thing I would give a five-star was the atmosphere. I would recommend ordering your steak with garlic and rosemary or another marinated choice. Plain Jane does not work.

Google
Jak's is A-mazzinnnggg. Their new location is even sexier than the first. Staff is consistently friendly and helpful. Food is also always great, especially the brunch- high quality and taste and good portions.

Josh Lyman

Google
Went out here for a family members birthday party and would say it was a nice meal. The atmosphere is lively and the place itself goes back a lot further than you would assume from the street. Front area bar has some tv’s and games on and the back is a little more sectioned off with large booths and tables. Food was pretty good, not mind blowing but solid. Wound up getting the steak skewer with cheese sauce which could have been a little warmer but was overall tasty. Sides were good as well. My mom enjoyed her steak and it was rare to her liking which can be tough to find. Definitely a solid place for steak in the west Seattle area but the maybe not quite as elevated of an interior as you’d get from a classic statehouse. Good place to take family or have a group.

Google
The halibut that two of a party of three had was over cooked and dry, the steak the third person had was perfect. The choose your entrees and then add sides for additional money is just a cash grab and not well explained on the menu. BTW I'm a retired 20 year professional chef.

Jen M.

Yelp
Still one of my favorites to go to for special celebrations like birthdays and anniversaries. This is also where I go to sit and chat to catch up with friends over good food and drinks. Steaks are not overseasoned so you can really taste the meat and cooked perfectly to your preference. Seafood is also very good. A bit spendy but not overly so these days. Service is friendly and professional. If it's packed, it may take a little while longer but that's to be expected and it's never too long. On the flip side, I have never felt rushed to order or leave immediately after a meal.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle. The food is delicious, service is great, and ambiance is warm and inviting. I like going on Mondays for the prime rib dinner special. It's $42 for a 12 ounce prime rib, 2 sides, and Yorkshire pudding. Some of my favorite items are the mixed berry summer salad (seasonal), onion rings, mac and cheese, prime rib (only on Mondays), NY strip, and filet mignon. All the steaks I've tried so far are delicious and high quality. The only thing I wish was different is if a lighter fried calamari could be served instead of the thick calamari steak crisps that have a bit too much batter. The happy hour is quite lively if you can make it Monday-Friday 4-6 PM.

Yelp
My sister who lives in West Seattle was raving about their bene and was excited to have me visit and taste this dish. We ordered three dishes and shared. Each dish prepared well. The tasty dishes were gobbled up quickly. The place is charming old world feel. Dark wood and an interesting layout for different seating options for all. The staff is friendly and attentive. We went on a Sunday and had an added bonus of partaking in the West Seattle Farmers Market. A great experience after our delightful brunch.

Yelp
We had a wonderful Father's Day celebration at Jak's. The service was wonderfully accommodating to our family of four; including two little ones. Every person who checked in on us was lovely, but Connor (our server) went above and beyond! The food was fantastic and well priced. We had bacon wrapped scallops, rib eye, wedge salad, macaroni & cheese. All hit the spot! A delicious classic steak dinner & ambience without the pretentious attitude. The only problem is they don't have a location in Edmonds! Open a Jak's in Edmonds please
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
Good service and quick to the table, good wine choices, amazing steak, you get two sides with your steak. I had the wedge and the potato pancakes. Everything was spot on. It looked like everyone around us was having a great time and enjoying the meals. I didn't see one bad dish or anyone complaining place was busy and it all looked amazing.

Yelp
We made reservations for our group of six three weeks in advance. Our table was ready when we arrived and we were ushered up a flights of stairs and seated in a booth. Honestly it was a tight squeeze but we managed. We would rather have been seated at a round table with more space. The service was very good and the food was outstanding. The other recommendation that I would make is that when celebrating an event (birthday/anniversary) a complimentary dessert with a candle would be greatly appreciated. Event a scoop of ice cream with a candle to make the evening more memorable would be a nice touch.

Carolyn M.

Yelp
The reason for the downgrade: The TV was not captioned as the Washington State Law mandates (SB 5027). Upon entering Jak's today I asked for it to be captioned. Leaving (45 min later) it still was not captioned. The food & service were good. The noise terrible and very hard to communicate.
google avatar

Sydney F.

Yelp
We decided to give Jak's a try because we were going to be in the area and I think we made a good decision. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside it was really busy! We were seated upstairs, and immediately we were greeted by our server and had our water glasses filled. We got a round of drinks, an espresso martini and old fashioned. We got the bacon wrapped scallops for an appetizer. For entrees, I think everything was super reasonably priced for the amount of food you got. For the cuts of meat, you also get to pick from two sides. I got the Caesar salad and the mashed potatoes to go along with my NY strip. My husband got the porterhouse, caesar salad and a loaded baked potato. Everything was cooked and flavored well and like I said, the price was great!

Yelp
I came to Jak's Happy Hour for the first time in a while w my hubby. We came at exactly 4 o'clock and sat at a high table and chairs. I love their bar area and atmosphere. Service guy is a super nice and good talk. We ordered 2 of Jak's Cheeseburger with Sweet potatoes fried and some drinks. We asked for medium-well for the doneness of the meat. It was perfect grilled burger and juicy meat. I ate all the sweet potato fries. We finished our meal in just 30 minutes, and there were two couples waiting for a seat. It's worth the wait at happy hour!
google avatar

Laurie V.

Yelp
Please note this was a to-go order. It's been a minute since I have ordered brunch at Jak's. My order was biscuits and gravy. There were 2 large beautiful fluffy biscuits. Unfortunately the amount of gravy (5 oz) that came with the order was only enough to cover 1 of those biscuits . Which in hind sight was a blessing in disguise. Jak's gravy in the past was flavorful and delicious teaming with pork flavor and a bit of spicy kick. If white were a flavor this gravy would be it. It was so bland my taste buds fell asleep. It lacked spice and pork flavor of any kind. Given it was supposed to be sausage gravy this was a feat. The order was supposed to include poached eggs. I received one poached and one over easy. It's possible I missed something when I ordered it or they realized the mistake when they put the order together. The breakfast potatoes were well roasted and had more flavor than the gravy. Aside from the lack luster food. The meal was ready to go when I got there. I was promptly greeted upon arrival. The service was great I wish the matched the service. The price point at Jak's is too high for shrinkflation to hit the flavor of the food this hard for me to continue to play Russian roulette with my wallet.
google avatar

Janet S.

Yelp
Everyone at Jak's is amazing, knowledgeable and will even let you know when you order more than needed because portions are sometimes huge! The pork chop is hands down my favorite. You can sit at or near the bar and watch sports or have a nice relaxing dinner in the main dining area. Regardless you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
It all changed about 2 years ago. We were told they switched chefs for a new person using the latest technology. It's totally hit or miss now. Tonight was a miss. Risotto was ridiculously bland. Burger was flavorful but brought within seconds of my salad and completely fell apart after one bite. Service was great, as always, but we never know what to expect. Prior to that, it was 100%, all the time.
google avatar

M P.

Yelp
Lamb chop was 10/10, spinach salad 10/10, NY boneless steak 9/10 Cocktail drinks were a bit pricey but not worth it for me.. inside of the restaurant was neat, unique and very warming. Waiter was a bit behind, waited awhile for the cocktail drinks in which was not worth the wait. Would go back for the lamb chop and try other sides cause it was delicious.

John F.

Yelp
Both the Steak and Salmon were well prepared. Cocktails were made right. Staff was attentive.
google avatar

Taylor N.

Yelp
Breakfast has slowly evolved and honestly it's getting sadder. They don't offer traditional hash browns or even potatoes o'brien anymore, you now get mini potatoes you have to smash open and prepare yourself. Please guys, I'm hungover and tired and just want edible potatoes, don't make me do more work! Otherwise, the staff is AMAZING all the time and the rest of the offerings are great. They have amazing dinner service too.

Yelp
We stopped into JaK's Grill while in the area and were very impressed with the food:). The lighting could be a little better as it was a bit dark in my opinion. When restaurants are that dark it gives the Robert Irvine scary vibes lol. We ordered the 12 oz filet w/roasted asparagus, kids burger and fries which our 10 year old daughter claimed was "the best burger patty, it's not flat like a pancake, it's juicy and flavorful and filling for a child my size!", and the JaK's cheeseburger, as well as two crème brûlée's. Our server was great and every staff member that we encountered was very kind. The only thing that we didn't like was the Crispy Calamari Steaks. They looked like breaded worms and didn't have flavor, weren't crispy and were squishy in texture. That was the only thing we didn't enjoy, other than that everything else was just really good.
google avatar

Yelp
Jak's has earned its spot as our go-to destination for consistently exceptional dining experiences. Every visit we're treated to impeccable flavors. The warm and attentive service only adds to the charm, making us feel like valued regulars. The inviting ambiance, complete with low lighting and a sophisticated vibe, creates a tranquil atmosphere perfect for special occasions.

Yelp
I've been a fan of Jak's for a long time. My friends and I come here every year in December for their Beef Wellington. It is amazing, and a real treat. I highly recommend it, if you can get there around the holiday season. They only have it for a few weeks. I was there about a week ago, and everything was spot on. We started with some very tasty barrel aged cocktails. Then, moved on to a great Spanish wine, that worked well with the beef Wellington. For old school Jak's fans, they changed up the format a bit. You can choose a couple sides instead of the default salad and potato. We all still got the ufo (mashed potatoes served on a potato pancake), since it is awesome. Half of us chose salads, half chose Brussels sprouts. It was all delicious. We had tons of fun, and had great food. Definitely recommend it.
google avatar

Johnny U.

Yelp
One of the all time best in West Seattle. Always leave satisfied with a delicious meal and the best service. The ambiance is always just right to set you up for the best night for any occasion. It's a frequent for work dinners, anniversary, birthdays or if we're craving fine dining close to home.

Yelp
Great happy hour,l! great bar hang, fun people, easy to engage conversation. Local classic

Yelp
My goodness! We are visiting Seattle from California and this is by far the best steak and pork chop that I've ever tasted! Seasoned to perfection! The service was supreme! When I visit Seattle again, I will be back.

Joby M.

Yelp
The food is tasty! The staff are friendly! Love the flavor of the steaks. I miss the broccoli and carrots that are no longer available.

Yelp
Food was tasty, service was kind (we were a big party and they handled us really well), and drinks were great.

Yelp
I've been to Jak's before both here an their other locations. This is the second time I've been to Jak's in West Seattle; just because our to-go steak place is in Seattle where monies no object. Today, we were in West Seattle and decided that beef is the thing. So, where else to get at steak but go to Jak's. We dropped in at 7pm on a Saturday without and reservation and of course there's a 1 hour wait or go to the bar. Excellent! We love drinking and eating that the bar so it was perfect. The couple on the right just moved to the right a few inches and the couple on the left moved a whole bar stool to the left; guess because I was on the left. I wanted to go half price so instead of both ordering steak we decided to split the porterhouse 32oz medium rare and it was fantastic. It was cooked perfectly and although lean was tender and the burnt fatty crust around the edges was epic; loved the steak taste, even the fat. I passed on the vegetable's that I thought was a bit lame and wanted the baked potato that came with melted cheddar and bacon with sour cream on the side I added myself. Everything about the meal, service, drinks and food was great and lots cheaper than our Seattle money is no object place. My drink was Manhattan that maybe had the most bitters I've had in a Manhattan, but was still great. After dinner was a Grahams Tawny port 20 years that was a great after dinner drink. Definitely, JaK's in West Seattle is legit. I recommend eating at the bar as you get personable treatment. That was a great steak.!

Zach T.

Yelp
My wife and I went for our anniversary. I'll start with the service, it was great. That said, they removed the best thing from their menu - the NY steak sandwich. It has been awhile since we've been here, but that sandwich was the only thing my wife ever orders. Very disappointed they removed it and probably won't be back until it returns. I had the cowboy ribeye which was good but a bit under-seasoned. Been coming here for almost two decades. Bring back the NY steak sandwich!!!

Jeri M.

Yelp
Best steak in Seattle. I always enjoy this restaurant every time we go. The beef Wellington during the holidays is my favorite. The servers are usually very nice.

Joy A.

Yelp
The staff, food and ambiance at JaK's have kept us going back for over 20 years. And it just keeps getting better!
google avatar

david tetsuo b.

Yelp
Best steak place in West Seattle and perhaps all of King Co. I've eaten here a number of times and have always been happy with whatever I've ordered. Of course, the filets are the best. Well worth a visit for special occasions.
google avatar

Christie D.

Yelp
I love Jaks and have brunch at the west seattle location at least once a month. The food is great but the new smashed potatoes are NOT recommended. They are dense and not well seasoned. The potatoes are the only reason for the 4 stars. There are other potato options that are much better.
google avatar

Michele F.

Yelp
Great food, although a little pricey. I've been many times and have enjoyed everything I've ordered. I always take my relatives from out of town here when they visit. If you're looking for a nice meal, there's no need to go downtown when you can go to Jak's.
google avatar

Zachary J.

Yelp
Been here a few times with and without kids - the service has always been outstanding and accommodating. I've had brunch, Salmons, rib eye sandwich - I'd order all 3 again no questions asked. Good variety of desserts if you're so inclined. Nice drink menu to select from. Price is reasonable for the most, perhaps a touch on the high end for their stake options. And the building is great, very enjoyable place to have a meal. Good for the family, date, or even a solo run at the bar.

Kristin K.

Yelp
Overall my favorite brunch spot around - consistently fantastic service & great options. That said, I suggest taking a hard pass on the new smashed Yukon potatoes - the seasoning overpowers the potato and the flavors just don't go well with breakfast. Sub them out for fries or potato pancakes which are way better.
google avatar

Rick L.

Yelp
Great ambience, staff and food. Easily accomodated our party of seven and even took our pictures to memorialize the day. Late breakfast. Steaks, chicken,-fried and regular were great as were the waffle, bennies and drinks (full bar) Would definitely go back
google avatar

Yaela E.

Yelp
A standard steak place but very good. Has a young crowd and young wait staff but in spite of my 70+ years I did not feel out of place.
google avatar

Johnny M.

Yelp
Wow, what a meal. I ordered the ribeye with garlic mash and carrots. The steak was cooked perfectly, and was covered in a wasabi butter that was delicious. Sides were also tasty and the service was top tier. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town.
google avatar

Sam G.

Yelp
It was very noisy and crowded, had to eat upstairs which is not easy for everyone to get too cause their not lit very well. It felt like it took 45 min for our food to come out but the wait staff was exceptionally friendly. I ordered the medium rare boneless ribeye and it was amazingly tender and flavorful. I'd recommend Jaks but expect a wait.
google avatar

Marvin W.

Yelp
Great food, service, price! Alas, the are out of business. No notice; just that my reservation was cancelled.
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Best fancy dinner place in west seattle! And brunch too... great food and wine list Fresh seafood and juicy steaks always top notch service
google avatar

Geoff F.

Yelp
Basically a really good experience overall. Food is always good and well prepared, nothing terribly unique... but always good. Groovy atmosphere, extremely casual. We've had great experiences with the waitstaff they hire and the drinks are solid
google avatar

Melanie B.

Yelp
Service was spot on, salads were crisp and flavorful, and ambiance pleasant. The only down grade was the French onion soup. Little to no onion, plenty of cheese, and the broth tasted like fresh from the can.
google avatar

Chris I.

Yelp
Great menu, great happy hour, and the prime rib special is a west Seattle must-try staple.
google avatar

KR U.

Yelp
Best value for your buck upscale steakhouse in the Greater Puget Sound. Tato cakes are a fantastic option. Only gripe is taking away the side salad option.

Sora S.

Yelp
Came here for my friend's birthday dinner and brought a cake in advance, they were extremely accommodating and helped bring the cake out/cut it when it was ready! The hostess was very sweet, and our server was very attentive. I got the lamb bolognese and my boyfriend had the prime rib dip, we both finished our plates clean. The pasta was amazing it exceeded my expectations, I would definitely come back! Great service, clean and quiet inside. Thank you guys!
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
I have been waiting to try JaK's after hearing great things about this restaurant, and it was totally worth the wait. I had the Beef Ribeye with a Gorgonzola cheese melted over the top, and I have to say that this was possibly the best steak I have ever had. I ordered my steak medium rare and the cook got it spot on, absolute perfection, it melted in my mouth. I didn't even need a knife. The flavor was incredible, and all of my sides were delicious, including the garlic potatoes, and the broccoli, which was very fresh. Our server was prompt and our dinners came out fairly fast considering how busy they were. I'll be dining at JaK's again very soon. I've never been so excited about a steakhouse!
google avatar

Tripti B.

Yelp
We went there for Friday brunch. I had the halibut fishwitch sandwich which was excellent! Very flavorsome and not too heavy. The ambiance is lovely and the service is quick and very courteous. It was worth making the trip to West Seattle in my opinion! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed coming to Jaks. We enjoy going out for steak and find this place a more affordable, but still great option. I like that they include sides with the entrées instead of everything a la carte. And they recently changed the sides offering from standard potatoes and veggies to picking two side from a larger selection. My husband never cared for their veggie side, so this was a better option. The service is always friendly. The drinks are always delicious. And they're always willing to help you pair a wine with your meal. Plus the weekend brunch menu is fabulous. My one critic is I miss the crab stuffed halibut. It was my favorite entrée when I didn't feel like getting s steak. It went away several years ago, I was told it was suppose to come back, and it has yet to. I would enjoy coming here more often if that option was back on the menu.
google avatar

Zermin A.

Yelp
Had an absolutely fantastic brunch at this location! Food: the steak eggs Benedict is probably the best I have ever had! The steak was perfectly cooked, it was placed on potatoes and the hollandaise sauce was off the charts! The fried steak was great too, they cooked it to perfection! Perfect whipped butter that went great with the fabulous brioche bread! Service: impeccable! On spot! The server was warm and engaged! Location: perfect location with ample parking available around! Heart of west Seattle Ambiance: the only thing I should knock stars off for is the ambiance! We went in for brunch and it was overly dark! The place is in serious need of lighting update But overall I loved the food and will definitely be back for brunch!
google avatar

Mia D.

Yelp
I love their steak salad and their appetizer, mac & cheese. This place is always busy and I have never had bad service or a bad meal.
google avatar

Christopher F.

Yelp
Quite disappointed in the service, ambiance and experience. Server was terribly slow, took forever to get drinks, food, and refills. You would expect more from a place like this. In fact, another server actually asked us if we were being helped because we were sitting there with no attention. Ambiance was on the loud side, especially since one of the bussers dropped an entire stack of plates, silverware, and glasses right next to our table which shattered all over. No apologies from the slow server or the loud busser. We were hoping to try a few courses including a steak, but by the time our order was taken it was so late that we opted for burgers. They were great, but a second (and necessary) choice due to the issues with service - we would have otherwise been there 3 hours. In a welcoming and diverse neighborhood like West Seattle, we would have also expected that the host might have avoided assuming that we were father and son (we are husband and husband for 25 years and politely corrected him). While he apologized and was attentive to the table locale we wanted, we probably would have forgotten about that first impression had the subsequent service been better.
google avatar

Luis A.

Yelp
The best cheeseburger in Seattle, no question. Not five stars simply because the ambiance is tired and if you get seated in certain parts of the restaurant it feels like you're the red-headed stepchild being put in a corner where nobody sees you. Also it is not cheap here, but hey, welcome to Seattle restaurants.
