Where to Eat and Drink in South Lake Tahoe

"Taqueria Jalisco is located in one of South Lake Tahoe’s many mid-century strip malls, but don’t dismiss this gem based on the hole-in-the-wall location. The Mexican food restaurant is quick, authentic, and affordable, complete with a salsa bar, as well as friendly service. The three taco combo with beans and rice is especially satisfying after working up an appetite during a long day on the mountain." - Julie Brown Davis, Daisy Barringer

Yummy little place I stumbled upon. The asada super burrito was bigger than expected for the price, so it was a great deal and very delicious. The tacos could’ve been better but for $2.50 they were heavy on the meat and still tasty. Overall, great prices and good food.

Google
Amazing local restaurant. Their chile relleno burrito was delish. I recommended getting it as a wet burrito with half and half sauces. The chicken enchiladas with rice and beans was homemade and very fresh. Awesome salsa bar too.

Google
This place was our go to for years. In fact I previously gave them 5 stars. I don’t like giving bad reviews but I also don’t like giving 5 stars that are not warranted. This place no longer warrants that rating. In fact we have taken friends here who also have told us they no longer will even go here. The prices have gone way up, which I get, but portion sizes are shrinking and so is quality and taste. Today I got a taco that had maybe 7 pieces of meat but two I couldn’t even eat. I counted 9 chips for my husband and I but if we want more we need to pay? 9 chips for two people. Two tacos use to fill me up but not the size now. My husband’s burrito was also much smaller. Unfortunately this may be our last visit. We keep giving them another chance but we have given them too many with no improvement.

Google
It's a nice little taqueria in South Lake Tahoe. The service is friendly, the food is good, and the atmosphere is simple. The prices are a little higher than I appreciate, breakfast burritos are almost $11. I will go here occasionally just to switch it up..

Google
Most of the taqueria in the area closed quite early, so you only have a few options to choose from after 6 pm. I like to try out new taqueria each time I'm here, and this was the one on the list. I didn't have too high of an expectation since this is more of a tourist area. The tacos were okay, I had birria and carnitas for the meat. The carnitas were pretty dry and flavorless in the mouth, so I had to drench it with sauce, which I don't like doing if the meat itself is good. The birria taco was also dry and not much flavor to it, which is surprising since birria should be the most juicy out of other meat options. The burrito was huge, and I would say it was at least a pound worth of food. I asked for no rice, and the inside felt like it was mostly filled with sour cream and lettuce. The asada didn't have much flavor or texture to it. I would say this place is reasonable priced and the portion is good. If you're just looking for a place to fill you up, then this place will do the job. If you're looking for some tasty tacos and burrito, then you should look elsewhere. There are parking spots out in the front, and Google maps will only guide you to the parking lot entrance. So you have to keep going all the way in, and it'll be on the right.

Google
Wonderful Mexican food in South Lake Tahoe. We ordered the Super Burrito and it lived up to its name. Chock full of meat, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, beans, and a whole raft of delicious flavor, the super burrito does not disappoint. It's also massive, and fit for a large hungry human. We also ordered a pair of enchiladas and those were solid. Service here is really friendly too. If you're in South Lake Tahoe, and craving some Mexican food, look no further!

Google
Nice service, food and atmosphere. We ordered, Seafood Fajitas, Fish Tacos and Shrimp Ceviche. It was all cooked well and authentic Mexican style. If you like authentic Mexican food then this is the place for you. We are spoiled with Tex Mex and Fusion so my wife did not enjoy it as much hence the four stars. Myself I enjoyed the authentic Mexican taste.

Google
The California burrito with guacamole totally hit the spot! Great salsa bar as well.

Yelp
Came here with my family on a cold winter night in tahoe. Food came out fairly quickly and tasted good, and we also got complimentary nachos and our own picking from their sauce bar. Service was friendly and fast. The enchiladas and quesadillas were solid -- warm and did the job. The chile relleno was a little bit underwhelming though, not sure if there was too much oil/liquid since it tasted a little flat & soggy. Overall, Jalisco's Tacqueria was decent for a Mexican food bite in south lake tahoe.

Yelp
First time trying this place as it was recommended by multiple people and I was not disappointed! You order at the counter and then they bring the food to the table for you. I got chicken enchiladas and they were very delicious. The girl at the counter I think was a little too shy. We asked if they had margaritas and she was so confused and didn't know what we were talking about. We saw they had beers in the fridge so we thought they might have other drinks as well but just beer and sodas. We'll definitely be back to try some other menu items!

Yelp
I stopped in here for a burrito. I got the bean rice and cheese and added steak. The burrito was huge and chips were included in the bag. The steak in the burrito tasted like real steak more than the typical burnt carne asada. I enjoyed it. The pieces are big so be careful with small children. The pico de gallo desperately needed salt and had too many onions. The staff did their job and got my burrito to me super quickly. There was indoor and outdoor seating available. The inside was clean and there are many drinks to choose from.

Yelp
Probably the worst Mexican food I've ever had. The chicken looked like it was a Costco rotisserie chicken they cut into cubes. The pastor was the dryest meat I've ever had in Mexican food. Horchata tasted like sugar water. Low effort Mexican food. Can't believe places like this are able to stay in business
google avatar

Madhuri K.

Yelp
The food is horrendous. The chicken was just boiled without flavor. The beans and rice same thing. We literally had to numb the senses with hot salsa to eat this food.
google avatar

Monique R.

Yelp
The food was delicious & authentic. The pozole and quesabirrias were flavorful and the service was excellent.
google avatar

Carlos L.

Yelp
Note: The sign at the front says Jalisco Taqueria, but I was told it is the same. Had the pozole and two tacos(al pastor, carnitas). The tacos were great. They give you a side of onions, radishes, and lime. Most places I've been before also give you cilantro, but not here. The pozole was not spicy, but they gave me some hot sauce to add, smoky chipotle, I think. Once I added it, it was spicy enough for me. It had a LOT of meat. The bowl wasn't as big as in other places, but for the price, I think it was reasonable. I would recommend this place, as long as you are not expecting a fancy place. BTW, it's now open on Mondays, too.

Yelp
In preparation for a trip to Tahoe from the Bay Area, I watched some YouTube videos and this place was recommended. I ordered the three taco plate with chicken, carne asada and al pastor. It comes with a refried beans and rice. Not the prettiest plate and the meats were not tender unfortunately. The order did come with chips and they have a salsa bar with lots of sauces and toppings. Parking not a problem because it's shared with other businesses. My daughter got the Al pastor burrito which is big and okay. She gives it a 3.5. She asked me what makes a 5 and my definition is about flavor, texture, tenderness and juiciness. This place just didn't hit the mark for me.

Yelp
Coming from a LA this place served really tasty tacos especially the birria tacos and salsa bar provided great choices and tastes ... thank you
google avatar

Oscar G.

Yelp
Only issue I had is that we were here at 9:05 and they needed an extra ten minutes to be ready. Good food, bad timing unfortunately. Had to go somewhere else Help and their signs showed they should be open but they simply weren't ready.

Yelp
This place is great . Love the burrito. The food was excellent, salsa bar top notch. The people were helpful . Couple things detract- the chips provided with the burrito have the most meager serving I have ever seen: maybe 7 chips.

Yelp
Was doing a bit of food hour because we were snowed in. Came in and just ordered 3 Street tacos. Carnitas, asada, and pastor. Really disappointed because I got it to go and it was just 2 corn tortilla and meat. No onion, cilantro, etc so it lacked all the flavors on it's own. They did mention I could get salsa and the salsa definitely added something but all the meat for each taco was mainly overcooked.

Yelp
Saw this restaurant on the list of eater's best south tahoe restaurants, so made an effort to drive there to eat lunch. It is located in a small strip mall, and there was plenty of parking on a friday afternoon. Menu is on the wall, and you order and pay first. They do give you a small basket of chips if dining in, and they have a salsa bar with different types of salsa (mild red, tomatillo, and hot). The service was super friendly, and they delivered the food to the booth that we sat near the back (there are two dining areas: one in front of the register, and one in a room to the left). They accept credit cards, but prefer cash (small surcharge if using credit card). They don't have a soda fountain (refrigerated bottles of pop in a cooler) but gave us a couple of cups of tap water. The had birria de res on the menu, so ordered that in the tacos and the super burrito. Also wanted to try the chorizo and al pastor. The tacos was just meat and two corn street taco size tortillas...so they were not oversized but still around $3 a piece. The meat was mounded on each taco, and it was up to you to grab onion and cilantro from the salsa bar. The al pastor wasn't good, the chorizo was great (chunky, spicy, and it was rightly greasy). We differed on the birria, my wife really liked it on her tacos...I was less impressed on the 'super' burritto. It did have guac, and the flour tortilla was very good, but it just didn't have that much topping. I realized later that the 'super' part meant the same size, but added toppings like lettuce and guacomole. There really wasn't much meat in there either. So I was disappointed, but I totally understand why local folks would come back (good location, friendly owner and workers, good selection of different meats). Reminded me a lot of the small taquerias all around LA, except the prices were quite a bit more, smaller sizes, not as tasty, and of course...the freezing temperature outside.

Yelp
Taqueria Jalisco breaks the mold of tourist focused eateries in S. Lake Tahoe. It is a locals go-to sort-of-place that offers convivial and top quality Baja Mexican cuisine. The staff are super friendly. The venue quaint and low-key. The food is excellent. Don't be throw off by the hole-in-the-wall appearance of the restaurant. It's a great place for a late afternoon lunch under an umbrella at the picnic tables.

Yelp
Showed up hungry, from a long drive, this place did not disappoint. Cool tacos , huge quesadillas, torta de milanesa to die for ! The service is awesome, they play authentic music, free chips and salsa and if the police eat there it guarantees safety, definitely will return in a future Tahoe visit!!!!!!!

Benjamin B.

Yelp
Was really hungry and honestly let down with how under seasoned the food was like got some tacos with literally chicken with no seasoning on it thank god I overstocked on salsa saves itself from one star bc of pricing which is solid definitely a letdown though
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food in a relaxed taqueria atmosphere. Wonderful selection at the salsa bar with a variety of heat levels. Service was fast and friendly. They have aguas frescas and flan!
google avatar

Yelp
I got a California burrito and it was terrible. The fries were bland and undercooked and the carne asada was dry and hard. They're not the original owners. I'll never go back
google avatar

Raylene S.

Yelp
The food is always hot and fresh! The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. They have seating inside and outside with an amazing salsa bar! Don't let the cheap price fool you! This is clean amazing food at a great price!
google avatar

Janet N.

Yelp
The California Burrito is a must try! It's a BIG burrito. So much cheesy goodness, amazing carne asada, sour cream and French fries! It's a true gem and has been my favorite since I was a kid so I'm glad it's still worth the hype and as delicious as always! We tried the horchata this time. Normally I would just get a jarritos from the fridge for the ultimate duo but this horchata really hit the spot.

Jessica B.

Yelp
The cashier was nice don't get me wrong but the food is HORRIBLE here , you are way better off going to Portales De Jalisco not this one . I almost broke my tooth biting into the taquitos . Also we ordered almost $300 worth of food and gave a good tip yet we could only get 10 salsas . I had to drive back across town to show them the meat was that hard and you can hear it when I tapped it on the counter . Not edible at all ! They also got my order wrong AGAIN when I took back my food so I'm done giving this place the benefit of the doubt .

Yelp
The menu was confusing on the wall but the food is good and the staff are friendly. Three flavors of salsa was a nice touch. It's hard to find but keep trying.

Yelp
Been in Tahoe for a week and have had to come back 5 times for their pozole visiting from LA and this spot's Pozole tops any restaurants ive been to. Definitely recommended

Yelp
We were looking for good Mexican food to take on our picnic to Kiva Beach and were glad we found Taqueria Jalisco. The service was top notch, with the staff graciously offering to create a burrito bowl for my father-in-law even though that item isn't on the menu. The staff also gave us a ton of salsa containers so we could try a variety with our chips. As for the food itself: delicious. The portion sizes are huge, as you'd expect from any self-respecting taqueria. And the prices? Hard to beat.
google avatar

Shar S.

Yelp
I liked Taquiera Jalisco, but I didn't love it :/ The options were a bit limited to me, I would've loved to see some barbacoa on the menu! In the end, the food was good, but just felt like something was missing. Great portions, and friendly service all the way.

Yelp
I've heard good things, now its time to actually give 'em a try. About as basic as it gets for a Mexican restaurant inside or outside seating available. Order, wait, and enjoy. There is an unhappy customer thats waited for his very large order to get finished...ah Order ahead. But wait...calling...I hear the phone ringing constantly. ah...So there you have it be prepared to wait. The new norm in most places... Carnitas is my go to for a first try at any Mexican restaurant...and I find myself back tonight for another tasty burrito. Yes good and tasty, large portion, good quality and the price is right! Plenty of parking and a very friendly staff are the sparkle on a shining Mexican restaurant foodguy-martin

Yelp
Definitely "Wolf in sheep clothing". This place looks legit, but food was not good. Totally tasteless food. Had it been a few bucks I'd spent there, I wouldn't even be writing this, but we spent $80 and every single plate was not good.... Edible at best(but everyone who ordered in our crew disagrees w that statement) but definitely not good and definitely wouldn't go back. Also it might or might not help that I am Mexican, and I know what this kinda food should taste like. Just super disappointed because we were all super hungry. For the record, I ordered carne asada tacos.... Those shouldn't be hard to mess up. The meat is well done/dry and no flavor. Also, we got it to go and we noticed once we settled down to eat that chips were just thrown into the ToGo bag, as if they just got a hand full and tossed it in.

A C.

Yelp
The food has little to no flavor. Ordered a taco plate and the rice and beans were not good. The rice wasn't cooked all the way and had no flavor. The steak was tough and bland. My family was also unhappy with what they ordered. We were not able to finish our plates. We came here because we had seen the recent Yelp reviews but I would not recommend it if you are looking to eat some good Mexican food.

Yelp
Taqueria Jalisco gets the job done if you're craving taqueria food while in South Lake Tahoe. It's a no frills place in a strip mall that actually has quite a bit of seating inside, and it's nicely spaced out with dividers between the tables and the walkway. The staff is very friendly and the food was tasty. Most of us got the Carne Asada Super Burrito wet with green sauce. It was super hefty and filling with good flavors, but the items inside were just warm and the outside was cold. It definitely could have benefited from being popped under a broiler to melt the cheese on top and ensure it came out hot. You receive chips with your meal and the salsas are super tasty so make sure to grab some! Prices are extremely affordable.
google avatar

Mimi W.

Yelp
We ordered two Super Burritos, one chicken and one carne asada. They do not have the marinated shredded chicken like many taquerias unfortunately. They come folded flat instead of rolled which makes it a little hard to handle when eating. Good ingredients but they both did not have very much flavor to them. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that they need to be hot and spicy but they needed a little more seasoning. Service was very good.

Yelp
Fiance was craving rice and beans, also heard great things about this unassuming taqueria. Located behind a shopping area, it's a hole in the wall spot with limited parking. So we came here after a long morning of hiking for a late lunch. There were tons of people here and our order took about 20-30 min to order and get our foods. We tried their chicken quesadilla and 3 tacos (asked for carne asada and chicken). They messed up our taco order and gave us mostly carnitas but we were at the hotel by the time we found out. Make sure to double check your order! We ordered take out and the foods were still fresh when we got to the hotel. Fat portions and tasty meal, for a cheap price! Super cheap compared to the other tourist restaurants in heavenly village. The chicken quesadilla really good, cheesy with chunks of chicken. Big portion, we were only able to eat half together. Although a bit greasy. The tacos were okay, a bit dry. We got a lot of sauces and they were spicy. The green sauce had a good kick and I think the red/orange one was pretty spicy for someone who eats lots of spices. Overall we would definitely be back here if we want a cheap and tasty meal to satisfy our cravings.

Yelp
Great customer service - delicious quick food to eat in or take away. Lots of choices and very accommodating to changes

Yelp
Food ok, not high standards. Chips stale. Non friendly ambience. Won't return. Far from delicious, in my opinion.

Yelp
So good. Go to spot when we come back. Authentic and properly done. So far the menu from basic to weekend additionals to the soups have been on the money.

Yelp
Lazy Tuesday afternoon checking out South Lake Tahoe and we came across this place with outdoor seating for our dog. We both had the Chili Rellano Burritos and they were EXCELLANTE.

John R.

Yelp
Been coming here for almost 20 yrs. Most recent visit today for lunch, saw they now serve breakfast, so i ordered the chilaquiles rojos and a drink, when my food was brought to me, she brought fajitas, no one claimed it at first since no one ordered those. She went back, then came back with the fajitas and said it was the order, i said, i ordered chilaquiles, not fajitas, but was hungry so i said id take the fajitas. She did apologize, but didn't offer to get my correct order or make any attempt to adjust the price difference or say next time you can get the chilaquiles on us. Since new ownership has taken over, overall quality has gone down.

Yelp
A taco store on every corner? In the case of Taqueria Jalisco, the taco store on the back side corner, not visible from the main South Lake Tahoe blvd. We came here in response to the $1.50 taco. Hole in the wall, facing a back parking lot. Go to the counter, check the overhead menu, place your order, grab a drink from the see through refrigerator on the side, and hand over your cash. We ordered 5 tacos to go: 1 chicken, 2 carnitas, 1 asada, and 1 al pastor, and hand over the cash. 10 minutes later, our order comes in a white bag, complete with chips, and 4 small containers for the salsa additions. I grab one red salsa, 1 chunky tomato, and 2 chopped onions. Checking out the joint, there's a TV on the overhead, probably playing Mexican soccer, instead of major league baseball. No windows, pretty basic furniture, not the best place for Mexican ambiance, and definitely not for a first date, which would be your last date! At our timeshare 5 minutes away, we open up the tacos and pour on the salsa. The chicken is like boiled chicken breast, devoid of flavor. The al pastor is all dried out. Stick to the carnitas and the carne asada, which don't have a huge amount of flavor, but with decent serving size. Add the red salsa, rather than the chunky tomato and chopped onions, which lack zip. The tacos are very small, with warm flour tortillas about 4 inches in diameter. Adds new meaning to gone in sixty seconds!

Yelp
My husband and I spend summers in Tahoe every year. Jalisco's is a must visit every time we come to town. it's great for a cheap lunch or dinner. Whether you get Carne Asada tacos, burrito, or fries you will never be disappointed. I really like the selection of salsa's as well.

M R.

Yelp
Jalisco grill is a popular place with plenty of seating as well as room for a long line - it's a small 'family' biz too, and not expensive! We were camping nearby and got 9 burritos to go for our last night's dinner. Carnitas & carne asada were both good. I chose the Regular one without rice & beans and it was definitely enough food - not Super-sized! :-) We had other chips/snacks ourselves, but they threw some in too.

Kim H.

Yelp
Food was good and great portion definitely will go back. We got enchilada, tacos, burritos and nachos everything was delicious

Yelp
Came here with my volleyball team & we LOVED it. Big portions, vegetarian options, and friendly staff. They gave us extra chips!

Yelp
TLDR: - Bring cash, 0.75 cent credit card chare - Simple but cost efficient burrito - Comes with chips, ask for salsa - Wide array of drinks including the classic bottle capped sodas Came here with a bunch of friends for a quick bite at this family restaurant before we headed to our cabin in Tahoe. The food here was good but it didn't blow my socks off. I ordered the super burrito with carne asada which included beans, rice, guac, and sour cream. The burrito itself was pretty big, the filling was busting out of the flower tortilla which was perfect because the order comes with tortilla chips. The burrito hit the spot in all of it's simplicity. As for price, the super burrito was pretty cheap for it's size coming at 8 dollars but there is a 0.75 cent credit card charge and I didn't bring cash so it did take away from the good price a bit. Remember to ask for the different salsas when you pick up your order, they come in little containers due to COVID. There is also a wide array of drinks for you to pick from so if you need a thirst quencher, definitely stop by for a classic bottle capped soda.

Yelp
My family has a cabin down the street from this place. Every time we come visit, we make a stop here, and everything is always so good. They treat everyone so nice. The lady who works there makes you feel like she's feeding you in her home, with so much hospitality and care! The food is always amazing! I always love the tostadas de ceviche, posole, tortas, I haven't had 1 item that was bad. You guys are amazing and all of us will continue to come back when we are in town!

Yelp
I make sure to drop by here everytime I am in South Lake Tahoe. The place is a hidden gem! (IT IS kind of hidden, its all the way in the back of a shopping complex :P). Great food, super clean from inside, quick service and very friendly staff. The prices are very reasonable, great quantity of food. One burrito and your hunger will be knocked out for good 4-5 hours. I went with my family and all of us loved the food, they give you big bowls of nachos and dip that are complimentary to start with. Must try their Chicken Tacos, they are amazing! If you are in mood to have something extra, go with the Super Burrito, it is superb, in a single bite you can taste variety of flavors in there! Highlight: They have the Jarritos old style-glass bottles too!!
