The Best Beach Hotels In Southeast Asia That Embrace Local Culture

Jamahkiri Spa & Resort (Koh Tao, Thailand) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"While the aesthetics of our age trend ever further toward light wood and brushed steel, Jamahkiri Resort and Spa remains an unapologetically lush tropical getaway. Set on the island of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand, Jamahkiri offers views of the water from all of its rooms, pavilions, and suites. If an overhead view of the water isn’t close enough, the two- or three-bedroom villas place guests right on the beach. It’s designed less as a luxury knockout and more as a serene destination for nature lovers, and the rooms, bar, and spa of the main hotel make for a tasteful update on the tropical theme — open air, dark woods, and traditional Thai interiors. Divers will feel especially catered to here, as the resort offers both educational and recreational diving experiences, taking full advantage of its oceanside location." - Tablet Hotels

Amazing location with stunning views and great ocean access for swimming with turtles, reef sharks and colourful fish. The villa was clean and had everything we needed. Staff were friendly and housekeeping was excellent. Massage service was great and affordable.||We’re in our 50s with knee problems and had no issues with the steps—don’t be put off by reviews! The food was okay, but there are lots of nearby restaurants if you’re looking for more options. Cable TV required a Thai number and payment, which was a small letdown.||Still, we had a wonderful time and would love to return. Highly recommended!

Great rooms and view. Nice pool. The resort itself does have a lot of stairs. There is no direct access to the beach in shark bay, you have to walk 15 minutes up and down hill to get to the beach, and pay for entering. The food wasn't very good, and sure was expensive, and there aren't many alternatives around. Staff were nice but we were refused to get extra water and had to order the expensive water from room service. All in all the resort was nice but pricy and far from the beach.

wonderful hotel, perfect service. we stayed here after being disappointed with another hotel and we needed early check in and check out, the staff coordinated everything without any problems and with a smile! we will definitely come back here! also perfect snorkeling right on the hotel beach with corals, fish and turtles! also the staff speaks excellent English. we should not hesitate when choosing this hotel. also it is often worth checking the price on the official hotel website, it is often lower than booking or agoda.

We stayed here for 4 nights and chose Jamahkiri because I wanted to get my advanced diving certification. The on-site dive center here was great and the instructors and equipment are top notch. The dive center and the hotel are run by separate management. I have a mixed review of this hotel because of the following: This is a 3-4 star hotel at best. For 4-star they should have better amenities, service, and restaurant which Jamahkiri does not. Prices are quite high comparatively. Better to book later as they'll charge much more if you book early. We were happy with our room because we got an upgrade to a room with private pool (we had booked a deluxe suite for over USD 200/night). The room was brand new but there was construction going on around it so we were given free breakfast during our stay, which was reasonable considering construction noise and debris. Though the room was lovely, the amenities could use an upgrade. The refilled shampoo, conditioner and bath soap are very cheap quality, not what one would expect for a 5-star hotel. This room came with a kitchen which was great but the dishes, cutlery were bought in IKEA. Appliances also cheap and new but will wear out quickly over time. There is no telephone so you have to go to reception or text on WhatsApp. When ordering room service, you have to use their online ordering form on your phone. It took 20 minutes for them to get the order and another 40 minutes for the food. Breakfast mediocre. Lastly, the stairs. Expect to walk up and down a lot. There is no beach. For that stay elsewhere.

When we stayed here, we later had to see a doctor because our muscles were inflamed and we had to take anti-inflammatory drugs and get muscle relaxants The doctor ordered us to rest for 5 days for walking. Because this resort has very high and steep stairs. There is no buggy shuttle. You have to walk by yourself. It is not suitable for a 5-star hotel. The room is beautiful but old. The view is very beautiful. And there is no special service.

The worst hotel experience in all of Thailand. A 1970's hotel that forgot to upgrade. Staff has severe attitude issues and are not trained to deal with international customers. The reception staff is super rude and unhelpful. The rooms have nothing. An old AC in which the control does not work and no fan. No iron in the room. Bathroom only has an ancient tub. No shower. The food is bad. They account for each room card they provide. This hotel is on a steep hill and walking to and from the room is a full workout. If your keys do not work the hotel can take over 30 mins to send the key to you while you get bitten by mosquito waiting for them. The room has no telephone either. The cupboard was broken. The online reviews are deceptive. We paid top dollar to stay here but would have been better to stay in a tent. They charge for everything.

Nice hotel with good location. The staff are pleasant. The pool was beautiful, but there really is no beach. There are very many steps, so not a good place is you have mobility issues. Good breakfast, and the hotel is clean. The rooms are large with a wonderful view, but they are somewhat basic.||Nice 4 star hotel

Incredibly beautiful location and resort has a nice boutique feel and not too busy. Primarily picked the resort as it had a dive club attached to it, and my thanks to Joy for looking after us and to Manny, who was our dive guide for a couple of days. His enthusiasm is infectious and was a wonderful soul to guide around a couple of the wrecks and reefs. As others have said, it's not a single level resort. It's built on the side of a hill and cascades down to sea level. Be prepared. All the team we engaged with were super friendly and pleasant. The resort does 3 free transfers to Mae Haad during the day but if you want to come back to the resort outside of their return pickup times then it's about 400 Baht for a one way 10 minute journey. A really memorable stay, to have a room with an unrestricted view of the sea and bay was very special. It gets 5 stars from me for location and service. Only two minor points are that Internet access via WiFi in the room was a bit temperamental, and there were a few power outages during our stay. They didn't last long, though. Happily come back to Jamahkiri again. Beautiful resort, beautiful setting.
