"Portland is fortunate to have a handful of Jamaican food gems, and of them, Jamaican Homestyle Cuisine in Humboldt is one of the strongest. Owner Keacean Phillips-Ransom’s Jamaican Homestyle Cuisine graduated from popular cart to restaurant in 2016, cooking tender oxtail and beautifully charred jerk chicken in a well-loved smoker out front. Don’t leave without trying a Jamaican pineapple soda or hibiscus flavored sorrel drink. Dine in the the casual, colorful dining room or out on the patio, near the wafting smoker." - Nathan Williams

"After having little luck finding Jamaican food in Portland, Keacean Phillips decided to open a Jamaican food cart in 2014, and eventually found her way into a restaurant thereafter. Customers here have plenty of options for spicy and flavorful chicken or beef, as well as curry goat and oxtail. First-timers should order the saucy, fall-off-the-bone oxtails with a side of hazelnut-brown fried festivals, though it’s hard to go wrong here." - Ron Scott, Olivia Lee

"One of Portland’s best Jamaican restaurants, Jamaican Homestyle Cuisine is a neighborhood favorite for its tender, sweet-spiced oxtails and jerk chicken. Both would be great for a picnic with a view of the rose gardens at Peninsula Park. For a less-messy alternative, a bag of festivals, or fried dumplings — hazelnut brown on the outside and fluffy on the inside — never disappoints. Never again is all I can say, it says curry goat but I don't think it is. In all my life eating curry goat I've never seen 3 Hugh chunks of meat ever. When I buy goat to cook, it's cut into a inch to inch and a half cuts. The taste was also off like it's not being seasoned correctly.

It’s unfortunate to see the negative reviews. My experience was awesome. I had no plans of stopping here. I was just driving by and I could smell the distinct 100% lump charcoal smell flowing from that barbecue. I pulled a U-turn and stopped for lunch. I got the chicken curry size large $15.99 Photo of my food is attached. The curry was out of this world. So rich and full of flavor and spices. The chicken was falling off the bone, tender and absolutely slathered with that curry sauce. The rice was done to perfection and the cabbage was boiled perfectly… not too soft and not too firm. I had to soak it in all that curry to make it even better. I had a nice chat with the guy rock-in the barbecue. I believe there’s one other person in back working as well. He was nice enough to let me have my dog in the outside seating area as long as no one else was around. But as other customers arrived we ate our meal in the car. It wasn’t good enough that I would make it a destination to come back. But if I was in the neighborhood, I would definitely recommend it for lunch.

Since the last time I visited, I'm glad to note that they seem much busier now! The food took a while to get to us and it was worth the wait, well, except the very oily soggy fried plantains. The kind Ghanaian gentleman was happy to see us again and the food was delicious with reasonably sized portions. I enjoyed the sparkling grapefruit with jerk chicken and rice. I highly recommend this spot, whenever you want a likkle taste of d island.

Google
Amazing... if you show up on a day where they make it fresh, otherwise you're paying a premium price for microwaved leftovers. The festivals are always fresh and delicious though. They also have Ting which is hard to find in Portland.

Google
It's been so long I haven't have real Jamaican food. Jerk chicken w/rice and. Peas and steamed cabbage side of fried plantains . Also 2 beef patties. This place has my honor and will visit Everytime I'm in Oregon. I am so humbled. See ya in October 2024.

Erica Kennett

Google
Great food and even greater staff. Only place I've found in Portland willing to make me fresh beef patties at 6pm instead of just being out for the day. I'll definitely be back!

Google
This is definitely not real Jamaican food. I had three Jamaicans from New York and they said that was the worst food they have ever tasted. We all ordered jerk chicken and it was far from jerked. It was regular baked chicken heated up in the microwave. The rice and beans were terrible. And the food is way overpriced. We are questioning whether Jamaicans actually run this place. We all wanted to ask for our money back. This place needs to stop frontin. SMDH.

Genesis Gomez

Google
I have to give this place zero stars…got the jerk chicken and it did not taste fresh at all, nor was it delicious. The rice was stale and hard. I even heard her put the food in the microwave. Disappointing experience entirely…$17 for a plate of 2 tiny measly pieces of jerk chicken on a large bed of tough rice was absolutely not worth it.

Sean R.

Yelp
Eh. Not terrible food quality but I like the other nearby Jamaican spot much more, this place isn't as flavorful and savory. They also have no seating inside (just a couple wood tables out front) and have no beer. I've tried their Curry Goat & Curry Chicken and the curry for both was pretty thin & bland. The meat tasted like it was just thrown in the curry at the last second. Also the sides of rice and beans & cabbage were pretty flavorless as well. The curry goat was especially disappointing as it was almost $30 ($28 I believe) as it was a pretty paltry serving of goat and it was more bones than goat. Did I mention they don't have beer?

Barry S.

Yelp
This place was a good find while in Portland visiting. I enjoyed my food and I would come back here if I am in Portland again

Esme C.

Yelp
Wow! This food was so delicious! I used to think Jamaican rice was not as flavorful, but I stand corrected! I grew up with Haitian rice so I can be picky. I will definitely be ordering food from Jamaican Homestyle Cuisine again!

Algeron T.

Yelp
Just ordered take out. Specifically requested for food to be secured properly. Half order missing AGAIN!! Food quality drastically different and terrible, portion size for small child. This place is terrible and shouldn't be allowed to under deliver this way. I paid 80$ for lunch size amount of food . If I could give below zero review, I'd give -1000.

Bmore D.

Yelp
Food and service was superb!!! Oxtails were more meaty than fatty and tender to the touch.

Ari S.

Yelp
Don't get delivery!!! Im a delivery driver , I also wouldn't recommend doing delivery driving for this place , doesn't matter how slow you drive , or how secure it is while driving. Boxes leak out the sides. They put all of their liquidy foods in boxes! They leak everywhere every time! And then customer is upset because half of their food is spilt out in the bag, do to the crappy box . Which is not my fault. They need to update their to-go containers, to actual plastic soup containers with lids ! They're putting curry's in boxes! Make it easier on the drivers and better for the customers!

Yelp
1st off know your specials had a big sighn out front said.lunch specials from 11 to 3 it was 230 and she didn't even know what the sighn says. I came here with the jamacain homie. We.both had the jerk chicken it came with beans and rice and veggies the chicken and veggies had no flavor at all. Beans and rice was decent. And it literally took 30.min to get our food and the place wasn't busy at all. I've been to 4 jamacain restraunt so far only 2 of them was good. The others straight trash. Will never come here agian even if it was free

Yelp
Jamaican Homestyle Cuisine is an island taste in the Pacific Northwest. Family run, friendly staff, wicked good food. 1st time but Won't be the last time. Thank me later.

Melous A.

Yelp
This place was ok, the rice was soggy, the sauce was thrown all over the food. No extra sauce on side. Chicken tasted old. I wouldn't recommend.

Kandi O.

Yelp
If you want your beef patties served to you bare in a brown paper bag, this is your spot. Otherwise, if you like napkins or some sort of actual packaging for your food, go elsewhere. Please do better.

Aruni S.

Yelp
Fantastic food though their patties are a little dry (maybe old?). Service is sometimes unreliable though in terms of being able to get an order through so this could use some improvement for sure. Ambiance is not great as the place is pretty dark and tables piled up on the corner but it also seems like most people just take food to go (I do). Don't let the inside of the place get you down though. Best Jamaican food in the area!

Douglas N.

Yelp
Food is outstanding. Waiter I'd a bit hard to understand. I was dieing g for ox tails he said they were not ready ,After I started eating my jerk c

Matthew C.

Yelp
Good spot. Small inside. Lots of street parking even on a Friday evening. Takes awhile for the food to be prepared, which was the reason to take a star off, cause we were in a bit of a rush. I'm wondering if it's cause it's made from scratch tho, cause it was for sure tasty. Good portions too. For sure will be coming back, but will prob order ahead next time. Give them a try if u haven't already!!

Kemi A.

Yelp
So darn good! It was a beautiful day in Portland, so I headed up to the North side. I've been craving Jamaican food and heard about this place from friends, so I decided to give it a chance. You can't miss the spot: it's colorful decor makes it stand out in a fun way. I love oxtail, so I got the special which comes with rice and cabbage. And when I tell you it was good, it was GOOD. Each bit reminded me of the Jamaican restaurants back home. The oxtail melted off the bone and had so much flavor! I'm not a big cabbage fan, but it was so good I ate that too. Rice was spot on as well. Washed everything down with a cream soda and yassssssssss. This place is authentic and the owner is super friendly and proud of her food. Come down here and you'll never want to leave.

Yelp
I'm new to the Pacific Northwest from Oakland CA and I have a list of all the Jamaican spots in Portland that I will be trying. So far I've executed on 3 and homestyle is the best by far. Little known fact, Portland has more Jamaican restaurants than Oakland California. Don't @ me bro #allFAX The jerk chicken is hella spicy. I'm Jamaican so I seek the peak level of spices. But this is right up there and probably a bit too spicy for the average civilian. The rice and peas is on point My observation here is I would of liked more. Plantains are muy Bueno Downside, you have to pay extra for them. That to me is going against the laws of gravity. The sorrel drink which I also make at home was very flavorful. My constructive criticism here is go easy on the sugar, it was a bit too sweet. One thing that I did find odd was the cashier cook / server were nice. Now if anyone knows Jamaicans and especially Jamaicans serving you at the restaurant is ain't notin nice bout Dem¡ I was suspicious of this, Jamaicans nice to their customer base, laughing and being polite, no attitude? Said no one ever I was thinking the food won't be good, because if you know, you know the ruder they are the better the food. Don't @ me it's #allFAX SO yes I was hella surprised when the food was Soo good, huh guess 2020 is getting more and more strange by the day. Support this business, I'll be back many more times!! Out of Many One People #bless

Yelp
I've been here before and the food at that time was great. I don't know what has transpired between now and then, but my experience as of today was awful. I get to the spot and walk-in to order food. A lady (that had taken my order in the past) is sitting at a nearby table, eating. Cool, whatever. But upon my existence becoming apparent to her, she got irritated that she had to get up and help a customer. Weird, right? You'd think she'd be aware of that considering.... well... she's at work. Moving on. I order my & my boyfriends food - two large orders of jerk chicken and a side of plantains. She tells me they don't have plantains because it's winter, which I thought odd because another restaurant nearby had plantains literally the day before. Oh well. I wait 20 minutes for the take-away food. The usual. Get home to eat my food after about a 15 minute ride. And the food was disgusting. Similar to another review, I'm pretty sure the food is a couple days old. Not fresh by any means. I got through one piece of chicken and even that was too much. Currently, my stomach is in SHAMBLES. Never again.

Kanesia D.

Yelp
The food was good. Our first time having Jamaican food and it was an awesome, however we did wait well over an hour for our food and had 3 curry chicken dinners and a jerk chicken, I'm pretty sure the man forgot to start our order until we came back in from the car, so slow service, as far as the ambiance, it could use some music or something just my opinion. Lol but over all good experience.

Claire M.

Yelp
After waiting 6 months to return to Portland, Jamaican Homestyle was definitely a must! We ordered deliver through Postmates, and we received our food within 35 minutes as advertised. We ordered: 1) Oxtail Meal, which included rice and vegetables (cabbage and carrots). Everything was cooked well! The oxtail was so tender and fall off the bone. Only qualm was there was not enough meat. We don't eat the cartilage part, so the meaty parts were skimpy. But that's always a given with oxtail. The rice was delicious as well as the cabbage. Everything paired well together. 2) Jerk Chicken Meal with rice and vegetables. The jerk sauce was DELICIOUS!! It had the right amount of spice. Be careful, it's a creeper. Not too strong at first, but it definitely builds up. A nice, good burn! The chicken was cooked well! It was smoky and tender. SO good!!! I can't forget to mention the huge portion size! I'm not sure if they give you more if you order take-out, but we were able to spread the two portions within 3 meals, and I'm an eater! Definitely recommend this place and a must stop in Portland!!

Lindsay R.

Yelp
We have come here 2 times. I'm glad I gave it a second chance, as the first time (end of day) the chicken wings were dry and the oxtails were more like just bits of meat in the gravy. The second time, everything was fire. Juicy wings and quarters, flavorful, full oxtails. I think my dad got the stew chicken and that was good as well. The owners were nice each time, that was what made me try it again!

Elaine T.

Yelp
I ate my food too fast to take a pic. :/ I had the jerk wings, festival and a spicy beef patty. And wow it was delicious! I love the vibes at this restaurant. The staff was super helpful and it was just nice to eat food from back home. I can't wait to bring my friends back here so they can experience it too!

Dahlia C.

Yelp
We came here on a rainy afternoon and although we were the only ones dining in, there were plenty of people picking up orders. The space is small and cozy, reggae music playing, a painted mural on the back wall, some images of Bob Marley and there's just an overall cool vibe about this place. The lady who greeted us was very sweet and made us feel really welcomed. What we ordered: Small Jerk Chicken Leg Quarter + Festivals Curry Chicken Side of Festivals, plantains, and rice Everything was hot and delicious. The Jerk Chicken was perfectly cooked, sauce was spicy, but rich and flavorful. The curry chicken was so tender and smothered in this yummy curry gravy that we kept dipping the Festivals in. Speaking of Festivals, the sweet fried dumplings, were somewhat on the dry side, but it's such a nice compliment to go with all the spicy and savory flavors going on. We also ordered Jamaican soda for drinks, but just be warned, they're $4 a bottle. We ordered 4 for our family and it wasn't until after we left that I realized how much it came out to be just for drinks. When the lady asked how we liked our food, we all agreed that it was amazing. She said, "Good, because it was cooked with a lot of love." Now, that's what you call real homestyle cooking. Definitely felt the love in every bite!

Jenny Y.

Yelp
Tried this for the first time! Ordered: Jerk Chicken and Curry Chicken meal $10 Medium, each If you want something more dry, order the Jerk Chicken. If you want something more moist inside, order the Curry Chicken. Both have awesome flavors. Personal preference, I enjoyed the Curry Chicken more because everything just fall off the bone. I could probably do fine w/o the vegetable and rice though. For the meal, portions were fair for the price we paid. Food tasted pretty good, but I didn't LOVE it. It will be a while before I come back.

Wendell R.

Yelp
Just finished devouring some of there smokes oxtails. So good yo I want to slap your mama. JK...but this is the real deal. Everyone should try this place. God Jamaican cuisine.

Amy C.

Yelp
My goodness!!!! Jamaican jerk chicken is meant to be spicy and hot and this place is doing it right!!! They turn up the heat on their yard birds and it's sooo addicting! Whatever the rub they use on their chicken is golden and really I can put that on everything!!!! If you want a spicy kick to your chicken come to this place

Bodie P.

Yelp
WOW-right from walking into this establishment I knew I was sent from GOD to eat this beautiful JAMAICAN food. The menu was small-which is always a sign of a true restaurant. I ordered the OXTAIL and it was fall of the bone tender. The sides of rice, beans, and cabbage were both delicious and yummy as well. I highly suggest eating here for a mouth of pleasure.

G W.

Yelp
The best ox tail and festivals YETT. Amazing every time and that's on that. Lovely family owned business. Go eat there

Artice B.

Yelp
Being here in Portland Oregon has been really a drag, But I stumbled upon this restaurant Jamaican Homestyle Cuisine I had the Curry Goat Plate and my wife had the Jerk Chicken it was "BOMB" they showed some hospitality that my wife and I thought wasn't here in Portland Oregon!!!

Lee M.

Yelp
I hate being that salty guy leaving a one star review, but wanted to share an honest depiction of our experience here today. Hopefully this catches the attention of someone in management at this place, and they make the necessary adjustments. Drove up from seattle with my mom, super excited to introduce her to some authentic Jamaican cuisine (she's never had it before). This place had solid yelp reviews so I figured, why not. Food: We ordered the oxtail and the jerk chicken plate. Both came with a side of cabbage, that had gone BAAD. You could literally smell it as soon as the server brought out our food. I have no doubt in my mind we were served food that had been prepared several days ago. Almost like they cooked a ton of food, didn't sell it all, and decided the cost effective thing was to repurpose it. The chicken and ox tail both seemed reheated, who knows how long ago these had been prepared. Service: Once the server brought our plates out, we pretty much didn't see another soul till we'd left. We came in around mid day on a Saturday, and were the only ones in the place. At least stop by once and ask how the food was? Idk, I won't dock points for that but maaan, I reeeaally wanted to like this place. Highly doubt my mom will want to try Jamaican food again any time soon, which says a lot about our experience.

Zak W.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food here. If you're expecting the traditional american restaurant experience where servers are waiting for your every call, this is not that place. The restaurant is loud with Jamaican tunes, there's usually a guy outside the restaurant bar-be-quing the food, and the restaurant just has that mom-and-pop feel to it. The decor doesn't look expensive, neither the silverware. I guess that's what I like about this spot. The main highlight of this place is of course, the food. I struggled to chose between the jerk chicken or curry chicken. I ended up with the curry and it did not disappoint. The food took about 10 minutes and was hot and fresh. My curry chicken included rice and I believe cabbage. Everything tasted great and there was enough food for left overs. The folks that work here were nice as well. No one was rude or ignored me as other reviews may have suggested. I even saw a woman complaining to the host that she did not believe there was enough food on her plate to which the restaurant proceed to give her more with no questions asked. I definitely recommend this place and honestly it's just nice to see more ethnic restaurants run by POC in Portland!

Leandrea R.

Yelp
Unfortunately, it'll probably be my last time going here. When I first started going here oxtails were around 15 or 16 dollars and you got four or five pieces. That's expensive but I understand that oxtails are expensive. Four days ago I went back and the oxtails were $20... I thought "no biggie" because I really like them. When the plate arrived I saw two small pieces of oxtail with rice and cabbage. I understand that oxtails are expensive but that doesn't mean you take advantage of people because you know that they're willing to pay for something that isn't easy to find. It's fine to go up in price because inflation happens but don't go down portions. I left hungry still. Forget that, I'll look on Pinterest and figure out how to make oxtails myself for $20. Oh, and one more thing the oxtails had the nerve to be cold!!! The plate was burning up but the food wasn't....it was like they put the entire plate in the microwave and the only thing that actually got hot was the plate!

Nikole D.

Yelp
My wife and I stumbled upon this place a few years ago and now we find ourselves hooked! A young guy was out front BBQ'ing and asked us what were up to. The food smelled so good we had to check it out. This review is long overdue but when we are visiting PDX this place is a go-to spot. I am IN love with their Oxtail. So reminiscent of how my Grandma cooks her Oxtail just with a Jamaican twist. The pairing of the rice and the veggies combines all textures and flavors together so harmoniously. Just thinking about it makes me want to book a flight! lol The downfall of my love for Oxtail is the desire for MORE. Unfortunately, when you order this dish you feel like you kinda got robbed because it tastes so good but there just isn't enough meat. I get Oxtail is not cheap but if there was just a little bit more that would be awesome! The ladies are very friendly and welcoming which give the place a nice, homey vibe. My wife and I came to visit PDX again in 2017 and opted for delivery because it was a rainy and cold night. This time we ordered the Oxtail and the Jerk Chicken. Again, aside from the skimpiness of the Oxtail meat everything was delicious and just as we had remembered. The portions seemed to be even more than our previous visit which we ended up getting almost 3 separate meals out of that one order! We are leftover queens so Jamaican Homestyle is quite high on our list of foodie spots. We always recommend this place to friends and family when they are visiting PDX, you should check it out too!

Frances L.

Yelp
Wow I've never been to Jamaica so I can't say how authentic it is, but it sure is tasty! The spice and heat are perfectly complimented by the rice beans and cabbage. I ordered the jerk chicken so good! Staff is friendly and helpful. Will be back to try the homemade bean pie( they were sold out already at 12) it look so good! Definitely recommend giving them a try.

Aeja W.

Yelp
I'm from Seattle, however, I try to make it here whenever I'm in Portland. The jerk chicken - BOMB. The ox tails - BOMB. I haven't ventured past these two plates because it's amazing every time.

Henry T.

Yelp
I'm really surprised by the overall positive reviews of this place. So a precautionary statement before you go deeper into my review, is that this is the first actual Jamaican restaurant I've visited. I've had jerk chicken from friends' kitchens and jerk chicken wings at Crux brewing in Bend. Now with my background out of the way, I'll say that the workers here were very friendly and pleasant, which was the positives of my experience here. However, I ordered the jerk chicken wings with festival ($9) to share with the table, and had the small jerk chicken plate (~$12) for myself. Both dishes had really dry chicken. There wasn't a strong jerk taste that I had from my past experiences, but overlooking that, I just couldn't get over how dry the chicken was. I felt like my jaw was getting a workout in chewing through the tough dry strands of meat. I was there at around 11AM, which who knows, maybe was leftover reheated/recooked from the day before. That's how dry it was. The plate also comes with cabbage and rice, which were fine and not much to report on those. The festival that comes with the wings is a fried dumpling, and it tasted pretty good. Not too dry, and just the right consistency. My friend got the oxtail dish, which he didn't like. I tasted some of it, and the taste was good, but it was very fatty. I don't think I'd come back, unfortunately. The jerk chicken just didn't hit the spot.

Meredith B.

Yelp
Hello from Seattle! My cousin and I planned a trip to Vancouver, WA but then decided to check out Portland, cause why not!? Plant and crystal hunting- got us hungry and we came across this gem! This was actually my first time having Jamaican Food. I got the Jerk chicken (small) and it was the perfect amount, I wonder what the large looks like! And my cousin ordered the OxTail. My, my, my... both burstin with flavor, right amount of spices tingling my taste buds!!! We of course sampled each others, both SO GOOD! - And get yourself some plantains, while you're at it! I suppose I have nothing to compare with, but we actually read good reviews prior, and it held up! The grill outside in the front caught our attention - loaded with chicken... doin' its thaaang, and instantly got good vibes...from the music, the staff. (we assume this is family owned) Service was slow, but we were patient, and in no rush!

Kathrine I.

Yelp
Had the jerk chicken and wings, really good flavor, but heads up probably a little too spicy for the average person, was a little difficult to keep eating (but it was really tasty). I don't know if you can request less spice, but I would definitely see if I can do that the next time I come here.

Andrew P.

Yelp
By far the best Jamaican spot in Portland. I go here every time I get the chance this place is so good and comforting. You will not be disappointed and I highly recommend

Barry S.

Yelp
I had the curry chicken large size. It was really good I ate all of my food and I wanted to take a nap afterward

Jan P.

Yelp
This is a little hole in the wall place and I think you must know that a) it's there and b) it's good! We were the only guests on a Thursday afternoon. The meals are just written on a board without any explanation so you must take a best educated guess what will be served. It takes some time until the food will arrive (which I believe is not a bad thing). Self service to pick up napkins and silverware and clean up your table once finished. The food was very tasty - something different!

Tony J.

Yelp
The absolute best food that I have had since before my mother died of cancer. Everything on the menu is perfect! Everything!!! The only drawback is that they won't let me move in!!

Ava W.

Yelp
This food is absolutely the best food in Portland!! I could and would eat it everyday if they were open everyday!!!! I 100% recommend the brown stew chicken or the jerk meal! Both are absolutely amazing. Great family owned restaurant!!

Ted W.

Yelp
Nice family run business. Authentic food. I had the jerk wings, and they were high quality from the grill out front. There's a couple picnic tables for outside dining, cool reggae music playing inside, and owner is genuine.

Spencer M.

Yelp
My family and I ate lunch here and we loved it. The food is authentic and delicious. I was worried that my kids may not enjoy the food, but that wasn't an issue. The hostess/owner had a great personality and made us feel like we have been dining there for years. I highly recommend it!

Joel B.

Yelp
Having lived in Jamaica for 8 years I find it difficult to find authentic food in an authentic atmosphere. This place hits Botha those qualifications. I always get the jerk when I am here some of the best I have had outside of Jamaica. The curry goat is spot on as well. The music playing reminds me of my childhood wandering past beach hut restaurants and smelling the jerk on the fire. I would recommend to anyone who wants to know what the cultural flavors of Jamaica are. It is a casual dining experience, you order at the counter then sit and the food is brought out to you. The food was hot and well cooked. Goat was tender and moist. I will be returning soon.

Yelp
Whew, I had been jonesing for Jamaican jerk wings & oxtail and did they deliver TODAY!!! Wings had that nice smoke flavor underneath that tasty jerk seasoning. My oxtails were spot on and fall off the bone. Both have a nice kick, but it doesn't overwhelm the flavor. Can't wait to grab some more. During this pandemic time I don't go into many restaurants, but they are definitely taking the right precautions. If you want to save a couple of dollars call your order in, and grab.

Yelp
Terrible time management skills. Waited for them to open and the doors were locked at the scheduled time. Big disappointment for someone traveling

Yelp
Me: I'd like the Oxtail, and two Chicken from this Groupon. Girl: We don't accept Groupon. Me: Uhh, is this your business? (Showing her the Groupon) Girl: Yes. But we don't accept Groupon. Me: But isn't this your business, printed here? (Showing again.) Girl: Yes. Me: (Confused. Isn't it common sense for more explanation here, to a customer?) Finally another lady: They don't give us money. We stopped accept Groupon last month. Me: Well, okay. (Thanks for letting me know after me having to ask twice?) UPDATE (9/2) It's nice that the owner cared and left a comment. That's a good sign. The food isn't a problem. Not being able to use Groupon isn't a problem (I don't really care about saving that few bucks). Not being able to be told in a polite manner WHY I couldn't use a valid Groupon is the problem. One more sentence after "we don't accept Groupon" could have avoided the confusion and this awful review. Please don't be curt and be helpful to your customer next time.

Yelp
Extremely tasty food and a cozy, busy environment that feels like being invited to dinner at the home of the family that owns and operates the place. The Jerk Chicken is as good as it gets anywhere. It's disappointing that the reviewers who had bad experiences with Groupon are taking it out on this small business rather than the responsible party. Totally sucks that you got out-of-date information from Groupon, but that's not the fault of the restaurant that had pulled out of their agreement weeks prior. Groupon didn't pay the restaurant and then didn't take the listing off of their database. Pretty clear the blame lies with the large corporation, not the small business. Harry and Gene, you're not wrong to be upset, but you're unfairly harming a black immigrant-owned small business for something that is not their fault. Obviously your intention is not explicitly racist, but your action (leaving a 1-star review for the reasons you did) supports the everpresent hum of white supremacy in portland. There's nothing unusual or remarkable about it, but even though you don't intend it you are punishing black excellence and ignoring white mediocrity. You can do better - I believe in you.

Yelp
The chicken was super dry, maybe some days are better than others? The veggie plate was smaller portion of rice and beans, incredibly small portion of plantains that did not taste fresh and another small portion of cabbage--for $12.

Yelp
Great jerk chicken. Excellent Brown Stew Chicken. Plus, our daughter loved it too, at age 9. This is truly homegrown Jamaican done right. My brother lived in St. Thomas for years and he said this is "Good!" Simple, no-frills ambiance and clean! Have a cocktail at McMenamins and eat your meal at Jamaican Homestyle! We will come back!
