"James is a charming, upscale restaurant, located on the residential block of Carlton Avenue. The dining room is a gorgeous modern-vintage space complete with a lucite chandelier, pressed-tin ceilings and cozy leather seating. They always have an enormous and impressive floral arrangement perched at the end of the bar, creating an inviting and just plain beautiful environment for their patrons. But don’t just go there for their looks, the food is just as pretty and equally delicious. We recommend the Sautéed Carolina Shrimp with Creamy Garlic Polenta, the Black Kale salad and the Seared Day Boat Scallops with Rooftop Arugula, Crispy Pancetta, Olives and Roasted Peppers. Oh! And Monday night is Burger Night with Happy Hour prices all night long. Don’t miss it - the burgers are to-die-for." - Aki Carpenter & Chris Huban

"James in Prospect Heights has two election “survival kits” available for pick-up and delivery so you can stock up on wine and good food for watching election night results come in (or, at least, some results). The first is called “The Optimist,” which comes with pasta and walnut pesto, apple crisp for dessert, and sparkling wine and plum cocktails. Or you could go with “The Pessimist,” which is complete with hanger steak, a bottle of red wine, negronis, and chocolate cake." - hannah albertine
"This Prospect Heights spot offers groceries and provisions, as well as takeout cocktails and snacks, from a takeout window on a quiet neighborhood corner. So stop by James when you want a flask full of some delicious beverage made with Japanese whisky, and don’t forget that this place serves one of our favorite burgers in the city." - nikko duren
"A few months ago, James in Prospect Heights pivoted to offer groceries and provisions, as well as takeout cocktails and snacks. They now have a takeout window where you can pick up things like popcorn with ramp salt, little gem salads, and one of our absolute favorite burgers in the city. Take a look at their menu or order ahead through their website here. Read more about why James’ founder, Deborah Williamson, decided to use this takeout model." - nikko duren
"You know that game where you walk past beautiful Brooklyn brownstones and creepily stare too long in the windows trying to imagine who lives in these places with the fancy chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and crown molding? You can make a whole afternoon of it and then head to James before getting too depressed about your own prospects of owning such an apartment. This is a semi-hidden restaurant on the corner of a brownstone block in Prospect Heights that you could easily pass without realizing it’s a restaurant and not a place where people live. The food is all super familiar American stuff - scallops, risotto, steak, salads, and an absolutely killer burger - but executed better than most." - katherine lewin, hillary reinsberg
