Classic Sacramento Restaurants and Eateries to Try - Eater SF

"The lack of windows at Jamie’s and the perpetually low lighting makes it feel like a perfect day-drinking spot, and the hearty, meaty fare serves as a great base for an Anchor Steam or martini, day or night. Restaurant critics for the Sacramento Bee have designated Jamie’s as having the best club sandwich in town and the best clam chowder, and they’ll get no argument here due to the presence of real, carved turkey in the former and a hint of sherry in the broth of the latter. They also serve a juicy, garlicky steak sandwich, house-smoked meats, and a net-full of seafood specials daily. Jamie Bunnell, who opened the place in 1986, passed on in 2017, but Jamie’s hasn’t changed a bit." - Becky Grunewald

Google
I've been to Jamie's Broadway Grille several times, and I absolutely love this place! It's one of my go-to spots in Sacramento. The open seating arrangement is a big plus, and there’s never any wait when I go, which makes it super convenient. The food is always amazing - there’s so much to choose from, but a few of my personal favorites are their turkey club and Rueben sandwiches. The corned beef is house-made, and the sandwiches are loaded with thick slices of freshly cooked meat, always perfectly prepared. I can’t talk about Jamie’s without mentioning the French fries - they’re out of this world! Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfectly seasoned every time. And if you’re in the mood for fried chicken, their brandy fried chicken is a must-try. It's hands down some of the best authentic southern-style fried chicken I’ve ever had! The staff here is also top-notch - super friendly, welcoming, and genuinely nice people who always make you feel at home. The atmosphere is relaxed and low-key, and in addition to the main dining area, they also have a bar if you're in the mood for a drink while you eat. If you're looking for delicious food, excellent service, and a laid-back vibe, Jamie's Broadway Grille is one of the best spots in Sacramento.

Google
Haven’t been here in years but decided to stop by because we were in the area. Garlic steak sandwich. Ask for it medium rare if you don’t want it well done. We also ordered the cheeseburger and asked for it to be medium rare and it came back more on the well side. Overall food is consistent just be sure to specify how you want your meat cooked

Google
We came with some family and were able to request a back room table to accommodate the group size. Service was so friendly and food tastes great as well. The rib eye steak was medium, exactly what we ordered!

Google
unadvertised hole in the wall, if you didn't know what to look for you'd miss the door. BUT, fantastic food and my Mom says it's the closest thing to a REAL Irish pub she's seen in Sacramento. Loved the steak sandwich but everything I've had there has been exceptional. Friendly staff.

Google
Nice bar atmosphere but still kid friendly enough. The food was so delicious! The garlic steak sandwich is a must

Google
Well there we were on the wrong side of town with nothing better to do than look for someplace to eat, and all the sudden we drive past this little hole in the wall place that had the most amazing aromas if grilled meat coming out of it. We turned around and drove past the place again just to make sure, and sure enough...Those wonderful aromas were coming from Jamie's Broadway Grille! I spotted prime rib on a couple of tables while walking through the place and that was enough for me, and let me tell you something...It was Amazing! 5 stars all day long. ☆☆☆☆☆

Google
The garlic steak sandwich was very good and flavorful. The steak was not tough or chewy. The bread roll was soft and tasty. It was a good sandwich. The fries were hot, crispy, and flavorful as well. The potato salad was great! I'm an onion fan, and I enjoyed it in the potato salad. I can't wait to go back and try other menu items!

Google
Jamie's serves the best steak sandwich in town, by far! Small joint, but usually packed to the gills with people. It is hard to find if you do not know what you're looking for. Highly recommend, and definitely will return!

Yelp
This was on Guy Fieris show! So had to stop by this classic Irish Bar joint. They keep it old school here, which is a whole vibe. I love their clam chowder and Smokey prime rib. It's not the classic prime rib, this is the Smokey kind. I can finish it and it still doesn't feel too heavy in the stomach. Ask for their horse radish! The banh mi is also pretty authentic; shocking for an Irish restaurant. Love it! Def will be back!

Yelp
Jamie's is a very good place to have lunch and dinner. The staff is down to earth and very friendly. The food is excellent and they have a board of daily specials. You pay a little extra for quality! The ambiance hasn't changed forever but it is comfortable and cozy.

Yelp
Jamie's is a true dive bar with an incredible menu. The Friday night smoked prime rib is amazing as well as their clam chowder. We also enjoyed the garlic steak sandwich. Service was very good! We also stop in when we are in town.

Yelp
Had the garlic steak sandwich and it was greasy, very heavy on my stomach. I was disappointed. UPDATE: I received a message from the owner and he credited me for my meal. Now that is customer service! I will definitely give them another try.

Yelp
It's a nice little divey place; however for a DIVE bar, drinks are a little pricey. Bartender was extremely kind!
google avatar

Yelp
Very cool dove bar. I'm from Los Angeles and came to try their Ribeye. One of the best Ribeyes I've had, and I have had a lot of steaks but this was tops! A must try!

Yelp
This long time local favorite never disappoints! The location is nice and cozy and you can tell right from the small parking spots. But, don't let that discourage you. I've always found a spot to park and another to sit and enjoy my meal. The food and service are great! Looking for comfort food? This is your spot. The clam Chowder is creamy and filling. They have daily specials too.

Yelp
update: I believe the cost of goods has impacted the amount of food provided at this local hangout. So what did we order: 1) Garlic steak sandwiches: meat was still tender and favorable. But the size of these sandwiches has diminished. From the size and type of buns to the amount of meat on each sandwich. sigh. Oh, the clam chowder was also still thick and favorable. 2) burger: this once mighty burger is no longer. Again, the taste and flavor has not faltered, but the size of this burger is definitely smaller. The fries were well seasoned. 3) club sandwich: still use "real" roasted turkey but the size of this once massive sandwich has also taken a dive. And where was the avocado? Bottom line: the food is still tasty but smaller in size. Perhaps better for my waistline.

Yelp
All the best for food, service and ambiance at very price. Happy and clean place with hospitable patrons and attentive staff! Try it you'll like it

Yelp
We arrived early on Saturday- 4:45pm. @Lynn S ordered clam chowder and a salad. Katie ordered the garlic steak sandwich, small portion on those, her first visit. Lon and I had the ribeye. Steaks and clam chowder were great! Katie found the garlic steak sandwich, "okay. Not very garlicky." Service was good. Everything prepared as requested. I was hoping to see the smoked prime rib on the menu or mixed seafood grill. But the ribeye hit the spot!

Yelp
Quaint little place with great food and drinks. They are known for their steak sandwiches which are spectacular. Perfectly cooked steak. You get 2 sandwiches. Soft, delicious bread!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for the brisket sandwich, based on the reviews. It was good, but based on the 5-star reviews, I was hoping it would be great, and it wasn't. The brisket was a bit dry and not particularly tender or smokey. The green salad I opted for as a side was about 4 bites worth of almost exclusively lettuce (came in the sauce bowl shown). There is not much good BBQ in Sacramento, so I was hoping this spot would be my new go-to for a tasty brisket treat, but at $22 (and $8.75 for a pint of ordinary IPA), coming close to $40 with tip, I doubt I'll be back.

Yelp
Moved down the street and have always said I wanted to try. Finally got the time to go and I am so glad I did because it was so good I forgot to take a picture. The cup of chowder was so good! The cheeseburger 10/10; so fresh and juicy I INHALED it all when I usually only eat half of my burgers. The fries are pub fries cooked to crispy perfection and when dipped in ranch, 10/10. The Garlic steak sandwich was also very flavorful and the bread gave an added buttery flavor. The service was a bit slow but only because there are a lot of people. The restaurant is pretty small but enough seating to be seated right away. The parking can be a bit tricky because it's off the road but we were able to park across the street. Definitely see myself coming back often and trying to become a regular.

Yelp
Cute little bar off the main strip on Broadway. We rode bikes for a visit and chose to stop by. So we ordered lunch and of course got the clam chowder which is always good here. The bears are always fresh off tap. The server was super nice and everything came out timely, hot and tasty. I would definitely recommend this cute little spot

Yelp
My wife and I came here before we went to our hotel. Total dive bar . I got the steak sandwich that was pretty good. She got the pot roast that was recommended on special and her stomach didn't agree with it. She would give it Maybe a three . the steak sandwich is pretty good and service was good.

Yelp
Sacramento is rich with many hidden gems and one of the best is without a doubt Jamie's on Broadway. I've lived here all my life and still have only been twice. Each time I'm reminded why they're regarded so highly. Not much to see from the outside one might think Jamie's is just a local watering hole. Although it might be that it is also home to a kitchen that can go toe to toe with the best of them. They're always introducing new menu items and testing out new flavors. Went with a buddy of mine and sat at the bar. It's dimly lit inside with very few windows. Bar tenders was in a great mood and some patrons nearby at the bar were going hard taking shots and carrying on. It was 4pm on a Thursday. I love it haha. Took a look at the menu and decided to try the pork belly sandwich. It was topped with a spicy slaw and some bacon. What else can a person ask for?! The sandwich was immaculate. I felt so many flavors and different textures in this sando. Also it was huge, despite that I couldn't stop eating and devoured the whole sandwich in one sitting. The sauce added more juiciness to everything going on. Jamie's thank you for always keeping it real, staying true to what works best for the regulars and also new patrons like me that know about this place but never visited before. I plan to bring more people here and hope they will too.

Yelp
Hadn't been here in many years. Off the beaten path so it's kind of out of sight out of mind. Luckily my husband thought of it one evening after we helped our son move some furniture. We were all hungry! We shared the steak sandwich & it was good I think we both wished we hadn't shared lol. We started with the calamari & it was perfect! Son had a burger & said it was delicious. He got onion rings & they were nice & crispy. The service was great, our waitress was very friendly. The restaurant is old & very nostalgic but comfortable. We will be back soon, hubby is still talking about the steak sandwich

Yelp
This place has been on my radar for several years now. I'm not in the area very often, so it just never happened until now. I had a "date night" that we planned to see the Van Gogh exhibit... and looking on the map for nearby restaurants - Jaime's popped up and I instantly recognized the name from a *old* episode of Diner's, Drive-Ins and Dives... Season 6... 2009... wow! I haven't seen that episode recently - but walking in, it seemed pretty much like the Jaime's I remember Guy walking into. I remember Jaime showing Guy the smoker setup and knew I needed to get some smoked prime rib or tri tip or whatever was on the specials! I was happy to see prime rib available, so easy decision. My girlfriend quickly zeroed in on the open-faced turkey sandwich, which is another dish that Jamie's is well known for. The prime rib was simply fantastic... probably the best prime rib I've ever had (sorry, sis). It had a good amount of smoke flavor, but not overpowering... and unbelievably tender. Butter tender... cut with a fork tender. The horseradish sauce was just right as well. I tried a little of the au jus just to sample it... but I'm a more of a horseradish fan when it comes to prime rib. The turkey was great too - I got a big thumbs up (and cute wink) from the other side of the table. I might have been fed a bite or two as well. Turkey was juicy and tender, gravy was tasty, creamy and smooth. Our waitress was great - just the right balance to make sure we were taken care of without bugging us too much. I'll admit I was a little worried about getting to our event on time without reservations on a Friday night (they only take reservations for parties of 8 and over). The person taking my call for reservations assured us we'd be fine, and we were! It took us a while to try Jaime's for the first time, but now that we've experienced it, we'll definitely consider it as an option whenever we're in the area - especially if I'm in the mood for prime rib.

Yelp
We ordered take-out which was ready when we arrived. Added a couple extras for our chefs salads which were provided.

Yelp
My sister-in-law and I went to dinner there and we both had a steak sandwich. It was delicious. The service was great!

Yelp
Patricia is amazing and so is the rest of the staff drinks and food. Really appreciate how far she goes to make the customer feel appreciated. Prime Rib is why we came and we will be back. Thank you staff

Tanaya B.

Yelp
We randomly came across this place using yelp we was in the area I was kind of nervous being the entrance we came through was a alley but the customer service was great from the time we walked in the door and was seated to the time we finished our food and left. First time trying calamari. It was a six out of 10 to me. I had a cup of clam chowder, which was OK. It was a bit grainy. I would give that a five out of 10. I also ordered the chicken oriental salad. That was excellent. I give that like a nine out of 10. My boyfriend ordered the burger with the fries and let me just tell you I ate half of his burger. It was so good. We both gave that a 10 out of 10 I would definitely recommend this place and I will definitely come back.

Yelp
Heading up to Tahoe and decide to get some dinner. This place has been on my bucket list for awhile and it's just of the freeway.. easy on and off. My wife and I shared (I heard the portions were huge and the waitress confirmed) the following: Brisket Sandwich with Potato Salad (4 Stars $21.95). The brisket was cut in big think slices or chucks. The meat was tender with a slight smoke flavor, no noticable smoke ring, but still good. The only issue they burned the bread on the flat iron. If it wasn't for that it would be 5 Stars. The BBQ sauce was also really good, homemade, good balance of tangy and sweet. The potatoes salad was 5 Stars on its own. It was simple but good, new red potatoes cooked perfectly soft with a slight bite, minced celery and dressing. I assume mayo maybe some sour cream. Perfect seasoned. Onion Rings with Ranch (5 Stars $12.95) The onion rings are made fresh, breaded, not beer batter like the waitress said, but good anyways. The ranch dressing was 5 Stars by itself, fresh made, creamy with right amount of thickness and seasoning. Jamie's Clam Chowder (4.5 Stars $8.95) The chowder could easily be 5 Stars but I got a few bites with grit. They need to take extra care to make sure the claim are grit free. Other than that it was awesome, creamy goodness! Oh and a shout out to the waitress, very friendly, great service... I should have asked her name. Until next time...

Rachel G.

Yelp
I got the French Dip. 10/10 Waitress was very nice. The staff seemed happy and they were all laughing with one another. That was refreshing to see. I would recommend and come back to try something different.
google avatar

Ron G.

Yelp
Went to Jaime's for the first time and was disappointed. It's really a bar that offers some food items. The bar was full of what we were sure were regulars but the food area seemed like an afterthought and the food tasted like it. Maybe it was an off night but we won't be back.
google avatar

Angela J.

Yelp
Ok we started off with the clam chowder and one of the things. Really like about it is that it isn't completely smooth. There are grits of potatoes and it's thick and creamy! Off to a good start!!! So we ordered the Chilean sea bass which was literally out of the world!!!! The bass was cooked perfectly!!! And the flavor!!!! Light and garlicky and paired perfectly with the rice pilaf. Was not a disappointment!! We also ordered the fish n chips which was fried cod beer battered fries and served with wat was most likely house are cocktail and tarter sauce! No joke couldn't find anything wrong with this dish!! Christe was our server she was polite super friendly and since this was my first time here I truly appreciated the service. I will most definitely be back!!!

Brett O.

Yelp
The Cobb salad was 5 stars, what a great presentation, and it's an entire meal. My only complaint is the general trend toward overpriced drinks, at least beers (8 for a Sierra Pale, 9 for a Racer 5). I didn't look to see what a well vodka soda costs...but overall, I'll definitely go back. Some might argue that's a standard price now, but this is a local dive joint. That said, I give it a high recommendation.
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
Food was great our server was amazing! It's a bit pricey for a sandwich but Food was Great!

Yelp
This place has taken a step back when it comes to quality. $35 lunch should be top notch, but unfortunately it no longer is. The bartender Kristy is the greatest tho, I literally just come here for her and the Chili Verde of course.

Samantha E.

Yelp
A Sacramento staple that I continue to frequent! Great clam chowder and steak sandwich.

Yelp
Their clam chowder is delicious! We stopped by on a bike ride for a quick eat and I am glad we did. Their french dip was good as well .

Yelp
Was looking for a spot that had a great French dip and Jamie's did not disappoint. I would recommend

Yelp
It is very sad to say; this place used to be my go to, frequented all the time, and more recently it just seems like every visit has gotten worse and worse. Portion sizes are off. Quality is off. Prices don't reflect what used to be an incredible meal from them anymore. I never minded spending the money because you got what you paid for. Sadly it's just gone downhill so bad. My last experience was last week. I ordered the ribeye to go, and this is what I got home and opened up to eat lol. 10 veggies. A half a cup of mashed potatoes swimming in cow fat grease, and a ribeye that looked like it was made at Golden Corral. Half of it was completely inedible and pure fat. And the edible part was ... basic. Coulda got the same thing at Denny's. I called to talk to them because it was so upsetting that my once favorite spot had gone so downhill. The guy I spoke with was very friendly but offered zero help. I was told that a manager would contact me the next day - and never heard a word. So it's sad to say, that was and will be my last visit. Ugh.

Yelp
I've tried to like this place. We've been supportive for years. Once the wonderful owner died, it's never been the same. We went for St Patrick's Day, as we always do. We always sit at the bar. We were immediately treated like crap by a large blonde. We did nothing wrong and we are old. Quite capable, however. Travel amongst many many restaurants downtown regularly. This one hits the bottom after hiring a poorly educated person in customer service. The large blonde treats old people poorly and rudely. These things always come full circle. She will know when it does. Awful.

Yelp
My wife and I had lunch today, a Thursday, for the first time since the pandemic. My wife asked about seafood dishes and the server mentioned the fillet of sole, which sounded good to both of us, so that's what we ordered. After it was served, we spent the next half hour telling each other, and the server, just how delicious it was. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. Honestly, it was the best plate of sole - or any fish for that matter - that I've tasted in more than twenty years. And I'm a seafood snob! My wife, who is a light eater, finished everything on her plate - something that never happens. The thing you absolutely must order, too, is their clam chowder. So rich in flavor! I swear I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the daily. Jamie's is easy to miss if you're not looking for it. It thrives on word of mouth. It's comfortable, friendly and unpretentious - the kind of place where you just want to hang out. We won't wait so long to go back the next time.

Yelp
Thank you yelpers for turning us on to a real gem. This place doesn't look like much from the street, but once inside you realize the outside is deceiving. First you enter the bar. Then further back and to the left are several tables. The place was almost full when we arrived around 1:30 on a Wednesday. The server got menus and water to us quickly. In addition to the menu there are several daily specials posted in the dining room. I had the garlic steak sandwich and my wife had the shrimp and grits. The food was excellent. My steak sandwich tasted great. The steak was thin sliced with lots of garlic flavor. The French fries that came as an included side were really good too. They tasted like real potatoes. I think they may dust them with flour to give them a special crunch. They were not over salty though. The shrimp and grits could have been prawns and grits. They were large. Lots of flavor too. We really like this place and look forward to returning. It's nice to enjoy some really good down to earth food sometimes rather than climbing the tower up the street.

Yelp
I have been wanting to visit this dive for years after seeing it on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri. I had really high expectations going in, but was left a little disappointed after trying out their popular items. I ordered the clam chowder and the 16oz ribeye special which came with veggies and mashed potatoes. The chowder was solid, but did not have many clams of a strong seafood flavor. It was more cream forward than I prefer my clam chowder to be. The steak was good but could been seasoned better. Most of the flavor came from the rosemary butter on top, but I wish they would have added more flavors to the steak itself. I requested it be cooked rare and it did come out that was so I was happy with that. The mashed potatoes were the most disappointing as the texture was a too lumpy and not rich enough. Overall, the the service and the ambiance were good and what was expected. The crowd seemed to skew older for this hole in the wall, so maybe my taste buds require a little more than theirs. My partner ordered a steak sandwhich which was cooked really well and was delicious. The waitress was nice, fast and attentive.

Yelp
Our first restaurant of the new year was one of our perennial favorites. It's one of those iykyk places. And you really need to know. With its man cave like vibey den/lodge feel, excellent hospitality, and fantastic food, it never disappoints. Always check the specials because they have lots on regular rotation that are out of this world. Service is always on point because every person there knows how to do it right. Stop on by and belly up to the bar with all the regulars. Shoot, you might even become one!
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
Same great food as always. Food and service hasn't changed. The only garlic steak sandwich left in town - so yummy
google avatar

Teresa F.

Yelp
Our first time back since Jamie's passing and the pandemic. Jamie's is as vibrant as ever. It still gets packed by 11:30. We did make sure to note the specials on the board before being seated. Our group got the pot roast special and a couple of smoked brisket sandwich specials. Both the pot roast and smoked brisket were the epitome of comfort food. They were succulent and melted in the mouth. The post roast came with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The sandwich came with a choice of fries (yum), onion rings (also yum), or green salad. For an additional cost, you can upgrade to a cup of soup. The service is efficient and quick. It seems little has changed at Jamie's and we're glad. We do miss the garlic steaks and will have to come back soon for those.

Nancy B.

Yelp
We were in the area looking for a nice place to have dinner and this place kept popping up. It was a local favorite and was close to where we were hanging out. Upon entering it's like a small restaurant with a bar and a section off to the side with tables to eat at. We were greeted and promptly seated by a really nice waitress. The menu is not very big but they also had a board with specials on it like Chilean sea bass and crab cake. We had read many great reviews on their garlic steak sandwich and so we both opted to give that a try. It was sooo good. Neither of us are big red meat eaters but we really liked our sandwiches. The meat was tender and very flavorful. I had mine with clam chowder which was really yummy and my husband had onion rings. Service was great, ambience was nice and the food was delicious. I would definitely go back and I would recommend it if you were looking to get a quick bite to eat.

Yelp
Love Jamie's Broadway Grille. The last time I was there, I had the garlic steak sandwich and a bowl of the clam chowder. They were both excellent. A lunch companion had the cheeseburger which he considered among the best cheeseburgers he has ever had. Service was good considering it was very busy during lunch. Atmosphere-wise, it is a bar and grill. Windowless so a bit dark. A bit of a hole in the wall but clean and comfortable. Because it was busy, it had a lively atmosphere. I will definitely be back hoping that the brisket sandwich is on that day's lunch menu.
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
Baller food and the best ambiance in Sactown. Garlic steak sandwich is worth the wait and nothing finer than coupled with a draft beer. The daily specials are great for variety. Staff is great and always worth the conversation. One of my favs.

David L.

Yelp
Wow so disappointed. I know it's COVID time still but not sure if this place is gonna keep putting out great food since Jaime's passing a couple of years ago. It was great last year when it was open. Not sure if different people took over because the last few times I haven't seen the usual people there anymore. The daughter use to be there and all the old servers are not there anymore. Probably a staff change. There were quite a few people in the dinning room but still lots of tables empty. We were seated right away by the bartender. It looked like there was only 1 girl waiting on the tables. We were not checked on as much as we should of been. So service is a little lacking. Had to wait to get my ice tea refilled a few times. plus wait for a box at the end of meal they wait for the check. Just slow in general I was totally disappointed that there was no prime rib today. That was the main reason to come. Now it is only Thursday through Saturday. Dang. They had a special rib eye with herb butter. It was big but what an awful cut of meat I can't believe they would even serve it. So much gristle and fat. It was worse than Denney's. They took it off my bill but come on. This place made everything from scratch and good quality food. Oh well. The wife had the sea bass which had too much sauce on it and they added the herb butter on top. A little over kill for the fish. The clam chowder was good.

Randy C.

Yelp
Soon as you walk in, there's a bar, then a small area to the left and another area in the back very crowded when we went in to share a steak sandwich, which was all right but the cut of meat was extremely thin. Not sure that I would visit again.

Mary D.

Yelp
Fantastic steak sandwiches!! Service always quick and friendly. Highly recommend this little gem for a delicious meal.

Rare five star review. Great experience. A little expensive for what it is, but what isn't now. Good IPA on tap. Best steak fries I have ever had. Waitress recommended the Philly. It was an 8 out of 10. I asked for aus ju since they had a French dip and BAM 10/10! Highly recommend.

Yelp
I'm not a big fan of steak sandwiches as the meat is usually dry and tough. The garlic steak sandwich at Jamie's was amazing, however. The meat was perfectly seasoned and super tender! Loved that you could pick your side -- the potato salad was delicious as well. Would definitely come back to order again!
