The 30 Best Restaurants in Boise, Idaho | Eater

"Since 2013, Moshit Mizrachi-Gabbitas and her husband Chuck have been serving decadent pastries from a bakery more befitting the streets of Paris than a strip mall in Boise. Janjou sports modern, stark-white decor in a compact space that displays what’s on offer: freshly baked croissants, pain au chocolat, brioches, fruit tartlets, cheesecakes, and other indulgences. The creations often draw a long line of customers." - Scott Ki

Google
We are big foodies, and this place was top of my list to check out during our visit to Boise. It did not disappoint. The flavors are punchy, the textures were just right. Really creative combinations as well. Will probably stop here again before we leave because it was that good! Highly recommend. the Malabi brioche bun was a revelation 🤤and the rice pudding croissant was insane.

Google
As someone who hunts down the best pastries and sweet treats in every city they visit, Janjou was at the top of my list when visiting Boise. The texture of the laminate pastry was exceptional and each item they craft looks almost too good to eat. I was pleasantly surprised to find the coffee also exceeded my expectations; dialed to perfection and with expert level microfoam. I will be dreaming about this place and eager to return when I get the chance!

Google
The pastries were definitely worth the wait. Had to wait outside until line was moving but it wasn’t too long of a wait. The selection was very good. Only reason why it’s a 4 star is their selection in what they serve the coffee in as it was difficult to hold due to it being hot. Overall the experience was great and the pastries tasted out of this world good. Will most definitely make a second trip to this place.

Google
This place is underrated! Whatever the current rating is, it's not enough. This is the best bakery in Boise. The pastries are the right amount of sweet and rich and they balance the two perfectly. These are priced more than a pastry next door at Albertsons, but the quality is worth it.

Google
One of the best bakery's I've been to. I got a feta croissant and a few desserts, too many to name 😅 We were a party of four. The food was amazing, and they have option for to go or dine in. The inside is very small and only allows 6 people (not including those sitting at a table). We waited for about 15-20 mins, and we got there around 11:00. I recommend getting there earlier because some of the items were out of stock. Very cute place, and if there isn't any seats inside there are a few tables outside ☺️

MidnightGalaxy

Google
Very good desserts. Had the hazelnut croissant and tasted exactly like a hazelnut. The croissant itself was very flavorful and had many crispy layers that added to the texture. My sister and grandpa both had the mocha and they liked it a lot as well saying it was the best mocha they had

Google
THE BEST pastries in the Valley, hands down. Everything is freshly baked and once it’s gone, that’s it—and trust me, everything will be gone if you don’t get there early enough! Normally I always go for their chocolate croissants because they’re made perfectly. Flaky, crisp layers with a fluffier inside and just the right amount of chocolate. Recently though I decided to be adventurous and had this fruit tart with some sort of cream filling…it was so good I almost cried. It’s all I’ll ever get now. Nothing can top it, surely? Since I needed some protein though I did also get their chicken salad “sandwich” which was really expensive but pretty damn delicious. For both I spent like $27 I think…it is pricey, but I promise you their baked goods are worth it. The interior is small and there’s not a lot of seating—be prepared to take your food to go or perhaps sit outside where they have more seating.

Google
We have been coming to the bakery for years. In the past year we have noticed the prices have jump a lot. The pastries are very delightful and amazing but there's a point where the price overrides the urge of getting these pastries. Maybe on a very special occasion.

Yelp
This bakery has the best Almond Croissant! I always come here in the morning to get myself one - flakey, buttery, crunchy on the outside, and sweet almond paste inside. It's a small shop but offers various french pastries from savory to sweet! Would tell you to expect a line out the door in the mornings but it is for good reason.
google avatar

Yelp
This little pastry and coffee shop was just too cute!! It's a small shop, but the inside is clean and inviting. We tried a pastry dessert and an egg sandwich. Both were pretty good! The coffee was decent as well but the serving size for coffee is on the smaller size. Well, that's good for me because I can never finish my coffee. Anyway, do come earlier because a lot of the good pastries are gone by noon. The staff and managers are kind. There are seatings inside and outside. Will come again!

Yelp
Loved Loved Loved this little gem. we tried the Pesto tomato croissant, lemon meringue tart, and coconut lychee and rose tarts they were all fantastic! the croissant part was lightly crisp but soft, the lemon tart was sweet and tart, the coconut lychee base was almost savory and with all the toppings brought a beautiful blend of both. I had an americano and that was lovely as well. The inside was clean and crisp and the staff were all nice and welcoming.

Yelp
Stopped in for some pastries for the first time after hearing all the hype. Not a huge selection of pastries, but everything looked wonderful. I went for an almond croissant. FWIW I lived in Paris for a year, so I get patisserie fare. I love croissants, and this on had a really nice almond flavor, but frankly I thought it was over-baked. It was really crunchy. I mean *really* crunchy. No signs of burn. I certainly enjoyed eating it, but I can't say it comes close to being the best I've had. Maybe next time. Expect a line at the door...
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
The display case is art. The selection of pastries made it hard to pick the only a handful my husband and I decided we would split. The fried croissant sandwich did not wow. All the elements were well done, just nothing special. The sweet "garmoshka" has a lemon curd center that was delightful. This place is truly is a diamond in the rough.

Yelp
What can I say I will always find laminated dough and it never seems to disappoint. As a former baker myself a patisserie is one of the first things I search when traveling. The sweet and savory selection here is incredible. Unfortunately I wasn't able to try the cheesecake but i absolutely will be back. I was lucky enough to be greated by on of the owners apon arrival, they're a lovely French couple. Such a cute modern patisserie. A great addition to Boise. I can not wait to come back and try more!!

Yelp
The food is mind blowing. It tastes just like in Europe. It's delicate and rich. It's a must-try. The staff were very kind and offered excellent service. They were patient and accommodating, helpful and warm. As for ambiance, keep in mind that it's a tight space. I'd recommend sitting outside, weather permitting. The yellow tables and chairs are adorable and the perfect way to add a pop of color to your aesthetic food pic.
google avatar

Yelp
Get there early! Waited in line and unfortunately they ran out of the main items. We did not even buy anything but the owner did come out to let us know. Got there 10 am on a Friday.

Yelp
OH MY!!! Daughter & I finally went to Janjou's and we were blown away. Beautiful little cafe nestled downtown Boise. Store is small but it's what's inside that counts. Beautifully homemade French pastries, tarts, juices, espressos & coffees. There is a lot of foot traffic so it made it difficult to look over everything. Staff is super duper friendly and very helpful if it's your first time like ours. Go check it out - you won't be disappointed!! Taking my husband next time.
google avatar

Yelp
The best bakery in town! The quality of their pastries and desserts are amazing. The croissants here are flaky, buttery, and delicious. It was my first time having a croque monsieur and it was great! It was a bit too salty for my taste but the coffee helps wash it down. All in all, can't wait to come back to try their other items! Be prepared for a wait during the weekends as it can get busy! I also recommend going earlier in the day so you can catch more of their menu before it sells out.

Yelp
Visited Mother's Day morning. Short line outside but it moved quickly. Found a table inside. My daughter suggested coming here. She used to work next door. The pastries...we had one of each and split them...Hazelnut, Pistachio/Raspberry and Lemon. Absolutely divine. Good service. Glad to visit an establishment where the owners are on site and making sure things are done well. The shop is light, cheerful and beautiful. Highly recommend. A jewel in the Treasure Valley.

Yelp
Coffee and pastries should be a form of art. Art in the sense of crafted with passion and care. Janjou feels like a European enterprise planted in our city. The pastries are hand -crafted each day. The coffee is brewed in small batches and served at your table . My suggestion is take guests from a metropolitan area, and nonchalantly take them to Janjou. They thought Idaho was filed with ". Red Necks and Corn dogs " Boise is filled with many small businesses striving to gave their best. Janjou has visitors get an excellent sampling of the diversity in Boise.
google avatar

Freslayla P.

Yelp
Best french pastries! I always get croissants (the most perfect buttery/flakey bread), lemon tart, and pistachio rasberry tart as well. The workers were helpful. I suggest coming early they sell out quick
google avatar

Brandy N.

Yelp
This little bakery is certainly the best outside of France. Everything was amazing. It was so good that there was a long line to get in. I had the fried egg croissant and an Americano that was simply devine. I also bought another pastry to take home. The owner/chef came out to converse...she was very friendly. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Bree D.

Yelp
INCREDIBLE. I have no other words. The line to get in is wild (think I waited about 45 minutes?) : ABSOLUTELY worth it.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
Ummmm.....YUMMM a I know I need my review to be at least 85 characters to post which I don't agree with because some times one or two words on their own say it all.

Yelp
I finally find an amazing patisserie!! This place is a MUST visit if you love quality and delicious French pastries. This place is Legit...OIU!! I just recently got back from Paris and the flavors and quality of how their products are made just made my heart happy and tummy satisfied. The place is very lovely and has a nice ambiance to stay and dine in drinking your hot beverage and savoring the pastry of choice. There's so much to choose from. I got their cappuccino and an almond croissant for dine in. The rest were take out and were packaged in this cute box.
google avatar

Jan B.

Yelp
The almond croissant and the hazelnut swirl pastry is perfectly flaky, crispy layers on the outside. $11.50 for the pastry is certainly a splurge. We were disappointed with the available seating with 4 small tables only room for two per table. 3 tables used to lay their paperwork and bills on doesn't help to provide more seating for the customers. The area felt too claustrophobic to enjoy. There are a few tables outside and since one has to wait a long time in an outside line it would be nice to provide some heaters as the business next door does. An elder man scolded us for attempting to enter as only 6 people allowed at one time, although we observed more come through the door after us. Should put that sign on the front door rather than policing everyone .
google avatar

Naomi J.

Yelp
Phenomenal pastries but they're open just a few days a week, so check their hours before driving over! Cute seating area (inside and outside) and nice staff. I was disappointed by the price tags (each tart was $11 which struck me as very high? But I'm usually more of a croissant person, and I'm not from Idaho, so maybe things are just more expensive than I anticipated???).
google avatar

Jordan K.

Yelp
Amazing. It is Pricy, but worth it. A very special treat and they have great patio seating for when the weather is nice. Definitely will be my go to recommendation when people want to meat up for coffee!

Mu C.

Yelp
I got there 10 min after 8:00 am on a Saturday I still have to wait for another 15 minutes outside. The only thing I like was the almond croissants that were tasty. The rest of is not so good. I had way better pastries in Las Vegas. Spent $34.00 that trip. The tiramisu was not sweet at all and the vanilla bean cheesecake was gross.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
Amazing little find. Great couple running the place too. Interesting history as well. The coffee is superb and roasted in Idaho. The cheesecake is fabulous. I'd tell you more but that was enough for a single visit. Will definitely be back and will encourage others. Worth the wait even if the lines out front. And it was.

Sara M.

Yelp
Absolutely devine! Everything looks amazing - it was hard to decide!! A little slice of Paris nestled in Boise :)
google avatar

Shark B.

Yelp
I wasn't terribly impressed with this place for what it is. There was a massive line outside the door and we had to wait close to 30 min. They limit how many people can enter to try and give the customers a better experience and avoid overcrowding. I do think that's a good idea, however, the wait in the line wasn't worth it. The food wasn't very impressive. I do think it's cool though that a place like this exists in the Boise area. We need more pastry shops here, especially ones that do great presentations like this. The food is very pretty, I will say that. Despite my own experience, I still recommend it. Try it for yourself, you may feel differently! The owner seemed super nice and she deserves the support. If you go, though, avoid going on a weekend.
google avatar

Winnie L.

Yelp
Pro-tip: If you go even two hours after they open, some items are already going to be gone. Highlights: They make their croissants really well - very flaky, lots of layers and the fillings are good. The best was definitely the coconut rose and almond croissant. Lowlights: The brioche were super disappointing for me - I found it way too bready. I also thought the prosciutto gruyere croissant lacked in its filling. At $6+ for each pastry, I think it's overpriced.

Yelp
I enjoy my french pastries and this place was recommended by friends. It reminds me of a local patisserie in my area called jinjou as well so I had to stop by. Be sure to come early before 10AM to ensure you get the best picks of what you want to try since they do sell out. We heard a couple people call in and the staff tell them they're almost out of items and it was only 9AM on a weekend! It's in a plaza parking lot so free parking as well. | WHAT WE TRIED | + Butter Croissant + Ham & Cheese Croissant + Bostock + Leek & Goat Cheese Quiche + Opera We got the quiche and ham croissant toasted to enjoy it at one of their outdoor tables. Butter Croissant was good but thought the size was smaller than expected for the size. Ham & cheese croissant was tasty as well but really enjoyed the warm leek & goat cheese quiche. The flavors were blended well and the quiche was super soft and melt in your mouth. For the sweeter side the bostock was highly recommended and I agree. It reminds me of a mix of bread pudding/almond croissant which are some of my favorite sweets! The opera was decadent as well but I didn't realize it included coffee so it balances the sweetness of the dessert. They have plenty of other sweet & savory pastries so sad I couldn't try them all this visit but leaves plenty to the imagination to try next time I am in town.

Jan Peterson ..

Yelp
Cashier was rude and seemed like she couldn't wait to get out of there. Limited supply of pastries when we were there. We went someplace else. I was disappointed.

Diane P.

Yelp
The customer service is very nice and prompt, and I appreciate their care in allowing only a certain amount of customers in at a time...considering spread of germs. The food is delicious, although expensive. Always neat and clean there!
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
This patisserie is amazing! Everything is delicious - the owner is very nice and understandably takes pride in the amazing pastry in her shop.
google avatar

Kimberly B.

Yelp
Food was beautiful and delicious. Worth the wait. we loved the chocolate flan. We will go again.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a treat! Very nice and clean inside. They greeted us as soon as we walked through the door. Once you're in the door, you see their gorgeous display of pastries and other delicacies. The two pastries we had were absolutely delicious and I had one of the better cappuccinos I've ever had. This place is a must.
google avatar

Loretta S.

Yelp
If you have a sweet tooth you'll LOVE Janjou Patisserie, service is great too. There is usually a line out the door.
google avatar

Luigina M.

Yelp
Amazing I can say nothing then great think about love all pastry Sandy and sweet the costumer cervice is super friendly the coffee is so good the best mocha for sure definitely I will go back very highly raccomando
google avatar

Stacey W.

Yelp
Cute little cafe! Every time I go there's a line out the door. The staff is quick and friendly, but to save a little time I suggest ordering online and picking up in store. I've never been disappointed by anything I've tried. My favorite pastries are the kouign amann, croque monsieur, and Lola.

Nathan ..

Yelp
Found out about this bakery after watching an episode of Getting Lost With Erin French on Max. I placed a pre-order the same night. The ordering process was easy & I received an email when my order was ready. Everything was top notch & delicious! I'd love to see the quantity of butter this bakery goes through because it can be tasted in all the flaky goodness. I will definitely place another pre-order soon. I want to try everything they offer!

Yelp
Janjou Pâtisserie Boise is fortunate to have this amazing French bakery. Owner Moshit Mizrachi-Gabbitas is a two-time semi-finalist in the "Best Baker" category by the James Beard Foundation. Here are some her amazing desserts. Clockwise from top, right: Lola ($8) - shortbread crust, pistachio cake, raspberry confit, pistachio, Chantilly, fresh raspberry. This is one of my favorite desserts from Janjou. Everything about it is perfection. Parisian Flan ($6.50) - baked custard cake with vanilla bean. This flan is also available made with 64% dark chocolate. This classic French Custard Tart is my favorite dessert from Janjou. I love both the vanilla and chocolate flan, but vanilla is my favorite. Get both! Austrian Cheesecake ($6.75) - almond crust, cream, cheese, lemon zest, vanilla, sour cream. This is another one of my favorite desserts from Janjou. Austrian cheesecake is fluffier, lighter and less sweet than most cheesecakes. This is the best cheesecake in Idaho. Grenobloise ($8.50) - almond chocolate crust, 70%, dark, chocolate ganache, soft, caramel pecans. If you like chocolate truffles, you are going to love this pastry. It is very rich and chocolatey. Opera ($9) - chocolate cake, dark chocolate cremeux, milk chocolate glaze, coffee Chantilly, almonds. This is my favorite of the two chocolate desserts photographed. Apple Tart ($7) - butter almond crust, almond cream, apple, compote, crumble. If you like Dutch apple pie, you're going to love it. Lemon Tart ($8) - almond butter crust, lemon cream, and meringue. This is one of my favorite desserts from Janjou. if you like lemon desserts, you're going to love it. The sweet/tart flavor remindsme of Key Lime pie, but made with lemon. Laurel ($8.50) - shortbread crust, almond cake, raspberry confit, Tonka bean Chantilly, fresh raspberry. It also has the tiniest bit of lime zest on top. Tonka bean is somewhat reminiscent of vanilla, but it's not vanilla. This is the only Tonka bean infused dessert I've seen in Idaho. Highly Recommended!!!

Sarafina G.

Yelp
They have the best pastries I have ever tasted! The line is out the door every day, and it is definitely worth the wait. Their desserts such as the tiramisu and chocolate flan are equally as impressive. We look forward to going every weekend!

Yelp
If you find this place open , you are a lucky one This is a combination of art and Love Beautiful from inside and outside A unicorn of pastries that made with lots of Passion and Love No words to express the amazing taste ! Till you try it you will never know WOW

Ayaka K.

Yelp
We ordered 15 items and ALL of them were DELICIOUS!! They had a long like and sold out most of the popular items by 10:30am, so be there early! It was nice that the owner came out to say hi :) If I have to ick top 3, they are cheese cake (Australian style), quiche, and almond chocolate croissant. Their latte was SO good as well. Extremely high quality of food and service. We LOVED this place! Can't wait to visit them again :)

Yelp
I'm torn on my review for this upscale French Bakery. Beautiful & delicious baked goods for a fairly high price but the price matches the quality, but the vibe just felt unwelcoming for our family. We enjoyed a lemon tart, butter croissant and Milky Way tart. The butter croissant was very flaky and fresh, my daughter wanted a whole one for herself! The Milky Way tart was a THICK layer of salted caramel- if you're a caramel fan and like rich desserts this is the one for you. The lemon meringue tart was light and well balanced, my husband and I's favorite of the bunch. We also tried a slice of the quiche Lorraine, which took about 10 minutes to get warmed up. It was very good! They asked if we'd like a salad with it, I declined but wasn't sure if it'd cost extra. Next time we'll try it with the salad, I think the arugula would have been a good balance for the heavy quiche. All the food was great quality and freshly made. The customer service brought it down to 4 stars, as the owner seemed to be in an out with his dogs and the woman working behind the counter was just not very friendly. Very small space, no inside seating, and they are still requiring masks. I understand each business gets to decide what is best for their business, but the vibe just felt unwelcoming. Outside seating is limited, not very kid friendly as it is right next to the parking lot. We are definitely willing to give this place another shot- maybe once restrictions have lifted a bit more.

Yelp
Small artisan bakery to die for! The croissants were flaky, buttery and the right amount of chocolate. We always order a chocolate croissant, almond croissant and a slice of spinach quiche. All are always amazing. Close your eyes and it's like you never left Paris. My husband and I spent two weeks there, and this is the closest thing we have had since traveling abroad. The owners are so accommodating to our 3YO son, they treat you like family. It's a wonderful way to support a local business. I would suggest pre-ordering on a weekend, they do sell out. ( if you love stollen, they have it for the holidays and it's delicious!) again PRE-ORDER aid key!

Michael J.

Yelp
Dan Ansotegui of Ansots recommended we go to Janjou's for pastry and we did on our final morning (a Sunday) in Boise. Everybody in Boise probably already knows that this patisserie is outstanding, but for first timers like us, it was a great discovery. Long line out the door, but everyone was congenial and patient. Every single item they make and sell is worth waiting for. Some tables inside, and a few more outdoors. We were lucky the weather was perfect, so we sat at one of the outdoor tables. The pastries we had and the coffee were spot on. As good as you'll get anywhere in the USA, maybe even in North America. We sure wish we lived closer so we could become regulars. Janjou is a "quality of life" amenity that is to Boise's benefit, and flourishes thanks to the hard work of its owner Moshit Mizrachi-Gabbitas and her family. You couldn't come up with a better example of an immigrant helping to make an American community a place worth living in.

Plant L.

Yelp
Everything is delicious but $11.50 for an individual small tart dessert ( Lola) was shocking . Prices have significantly increased to the point I can't come anymore . I used to also get a big salad with my quiche but now they put both on a small plate which significantly decreased the size of the salad .
google avatar

Camille C.

Yelp
You have to go early to get a great selection. They sell out fast. Everything I've tried here was really good and fresh and tastes homemade. A little pricey but worth it. Almost always a line, but it moves pretty fast. There aren't many seats inside, maybe about 8, and only a few outside. My husband really enjoyed the coffee and I love hot they serve tea. In an actually tea kettle if you dine in.

C K.

Yelp
Probably the best quiche I've ever eaten. Delicious! Great service too. The line was out the door and into the parking lot. It's a little long of a wait when you're hungry and need coffee, but was worth it!
google avatar

Kyle N.

Yelp
I keep coming back to Janjou, and I have three advices if you are reading this review and considering trying this place: 1) Yes, you won't regret it, 2) When you return a second time fight the urge to reorder what you had last time and loved, you must try the rest, 3) Keep coming until you try everything, than restart from scratch!
google avatar

Gayle L.

Yelp
Wow! Great quiche, croissants and pastries. We bought way too much for two people but it was fun while the food lasted! The seating is limited inside but once the weather warms up, they have a patio.
google avatar

Yelp
Janjou Patisserie is one of my favorite bakeries perfectly hidden in plain sight of a strip mall setting off of State St. To be honest, I'm glad that it is in this almost unassuming location because it has a huge parking lot and although they only have a few small tables out front- I've always been able to enjoy my Janjou pastry and coffee here comfortably. I always get the goat cheese and leek quiche- the flavors and textures work perfectly together. I order it with a side salad that comes with a light vinaigrette that balances the buttery decadence of the quiche. It takes about 12 minutes after ordering to heat up. The quiche here goes perfectly with their freshly squeezed orange juice or they also have a full espresso bar. You can't go wrong with any of the pastries here, one of my favorites is the Kouign-amann. It's like a croissant in that it is made layering dough and butter but it's denser and more caramelized. The Kouign-Amann here is actually lighter and less buttery than other ones I've tried- in the best way. Janjou is a true gem of Boise, my favorite Patisserie in the area!

Yelp
Haven't had a croissant this good since we were in Europe. Really really good. Shop was clean & everyone was friendly. If you want a taste of Europe just head to Janjou!!!!
