The 38 Essential Vancouver Restaurants

"Since Vancouver’s food trucks were legalized a decade ago, they’ve enjoyed a rollercoaster ride through fads and fortunes. Favorites have come and gone, as the ranks of dozens have slimmed to a handful; much-loved trucks such as Soho Road, the Kaboom Box, and (Eater 38 long-stay) Top Rope Birria have rolled off the road. But elder statesman Japadog abides. It’s always worth checking one of the six food truck locations (including one parked at the airport) and four stores, especially the original at the junction of Burrard Street and Smithe Street. Snap up one of the signature all-beef Terimayo dogs with teriyaki sauce, Japanese mayo, and seaweed to see why the brand has lasted the course. Anthony Bourdain loved this budget treat on the No Reservations Vancouver episode, noting wisely, “If life has taught us anything, it’s to eat meat in tube form.”" - Nikki Bayley

Japadog – Vancouver, British Columbia - Gastro Obscura

"The popularity of Asian-fusion food has soared over the last decade, sometimes with catastrophic results. Japadog, however, is not one of the catastrophes. Vancouver’s Japadog hot dog stands started operations in 2005 and provide an interesting take on traditional American hot dogs, with Asian offerings like the misomayo (a turkey dog topped with sesame sauce, radish sprouts, and wasabi mayo) and terimayo (a beef dog topped with seaweed, grilled onions, teriyaki sauce, and wasabi mayo). Vancouver is an international city, and Japadog is a tasty reflection of its heritage and history. None" - notoriousFIG, wythe, SamM, S Lee

Best hot dog ever! Had the classic and loved the fusion of flavours - found out about the food truck from Atlas Obscura and glad we went. Highly recommend. Didn’t wait too long, 5 mins for the dog.

It’s a hot dog with Asian ingredients on it. Keep in mind that this is just a hot dog stand location. The cost has gone up but they’re doing their best.

This is the original Japadog that started it all. Good hotdogs with Japanese toppings a uniquely Vancouver invention and now a tourist attraction.

I used to be a big fan of japadog. However, I'm truly disappointed with my order today (May 7 1300). There are way too much sauce on my reddish hotdog, it is so salty to a point that it is not eligible :(

An interesting take on hot dogs with japanese flavors. The combinations are creative and tasty. However, many varieties come loaded with too much mayonnaise and heavy sauces, making them quite rich. I wish there was a lighter version available - perhaps with less mayo or more vegetable toppings for a fresher alternative. Verdict: definitely worth trying for the experience, but could benefit from a less calorie-heavy option.

Japadog is such a cool spot! Their hot dogs are unlike anything else and the flavors are a perfect mix of Japanese and North American. I tried the Terimayo and it was incredible. Also the teriyaki sauce, mayo, and seaweed work so well together. The Butter Shoyu Fries were super tasty too. The staff was really friendly and even though it was busy, I didn’t have to wait long. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, you’ve got to check this place out. It’s such a unique food experience in Vancouver!

First time visiting Vancouver and trying Japadog. Spicy Cheese Terimayo had a unique and tasty flavour. A lot of the dogs are all pork. I prefer beef so my options were limited. Unfortunately, beef is pricier. But I would try again.
