"Situated in Paradise Row in one of the old railway arches, Japanese Canteen is a casual restaurant that serves delicious noodle and rice dishes. The decoration is not what you expect from a Japanese restaurant, but is definitely typical of East London with an industrial and minimal look." - Mélanie Hubert-Crozet

The katsu curry here used to be a solid 5/5 and good value, even at £8.45. Recently the quality control has dropped off a cliff almost as quickly as the portion sizes, attached picture is of what I was served yesterday, hidden under the other part of the order so I didn't realise until back at the office... These things used to be packed to the top. It's appalling how far the quality here has fallen, staff are still just as lovely as they were before, but I have no idea what's going on in the kitchen. A place to avoid if you want to get food any time between before 2.30, if you go in right before close you might be sold a fair serving from effective leftovers, but even that's a gamble now. Proper shame, used to be a good place to grab lunch.

Used to really like this place, however since changing ownership the quality of food has gone right downhill. I’d not usually be one to review however the drop in quality was extremely noticeable. The Katsu curry was genuinely very bland.

Plain fresh food close to the Liverpool street and offices, very convenient for a lunch. I took chicken teriyaki with noodles 🍜 and fresh vegetables salad. It was tasty, especially chicken with noodles 😊 waited just for a few mins with a beeper next to me. Kombucha is long forgotten useful drink, welcome back. A salad 🥗 was a little bit spicy, but it is japanese kitchen 🌶 Would also be great to have an option to charge a phone📱😐

Quick lunch, was quite busy for what seems to be a quiet day in the area. Service was quick, the portion size good and food quality good. I had the chicken katsu curry and a view of the Gherkin. Next time I will try the Korean Fried Chicken! Menu isn’t very long but there are a few other options and plenty of sides to choose from.

This is your typical no frill type of place ... food is average .... service is quick ... if you are hungry and wanna have a quick bite you can head here .... gets very busy during lunch time so mostly finding a place to sit is difficult ... the menu has variety with soup , katsu , salad , rice and noodle dishes in both veg and non veg options

Nice friendly staff and great food. Would avoid the busy lunch hours from 12-1:30ish but other than that would recommend the katsu curry

Enjoying the Dan Dan noodles from Japanese canteen. Delicious. Good to see JC still delivering tasty and quick meals in the city.

A great lunch spot with reasonable prices. Typically very quick, but the queues can build up at peak times. My favourite place for Chicken Katsu Curry, but the Sweet and Spicy Chicken is a nice alternative too.
