New LA Parking Requirement Could End Outdoor Dining for Restaurants | Eater LA

"Top Chef contestant and restaurateur Fabio Viviani opened the first Southern California Jars dessert shop at 27981 Greenfield Drive in Laguna Niguel, serving tiramisu, salted caramel pecan pie, red velvet cheesecake, dark chocolate cake and other layered cream-and-cake treats in glass jars, with plans for up to five locations from local franchisees Colt and Bethany Nelms after debuting Jars in Chicago’s Fulton Market in 2022." - Matthew Kang

One thing about me is that I looove a good sweet dessert. I’ve heard so much about their unique cakes in a jar since they opened a year ago and I finally made it! They just launched new fall flavors like Raspberry double chocolate and Memphis mafia that is topped with a whole cream puff. And what’s even better is that they can turn any of their jar cakes into a milkshake, so I had to try the Pumpkin cheesecake and Carrot cake in milkshake form and, oh, I was in dessert heaven~ I’d go out of my way to visit again, so come get your cake and eat it too ;) Thanks for reading! ^-^

Google
Welcome JARS to Southern California. Grand opening day, I stopped in and picked up the red velvet and banana cream pie deserts. The deserts didn't disappoint and were pleasing without the overload of sugary taste. The venu is extremely clean, with a friendly staff, providing quick service and reasonable prices. Also, a variety of great desert products to select from. If you're in the area, stop in and treat yourself without feeling guilty. 😊😊 Thank you!

Got the new Dubai shake. Couldn’t even drink it, it was so weirdly flavored. The shake melted almost immediately and everyone in my car who drank it felt sick after trying it. Something was definitely off about the shake, not sure if the milk was bad but not worth $7, and won’t be back. Also, the shake comes with a rim of whipped cream and shavings and we were asked if we wanted the rim when it was being made, which was confusing because that’s the part that makes it the Dubai shake besides the pistachio.

Google
I recently had the pleasure of trying red velvet and banana cream, and they were exceptional. Jars offerings showcase a sophisticated blend of flavors and meticulous attention to detail. Each dessert, particularly the signature red velvet cake, is a testament to their commitment to quality and artistry. The presentation was impeccable, and the taste was both elegant and indulgent. Jars is a standout choice for those seeking a refined and delightful dessert experience. Shout out to Colt and his wife for knocking it out of the park on this location! Will definitely be back! Thanks again

Google
We just tried out these cute jar desserts today and they taste amazing! Nice, cool, creamy and NOT too sweet! We had the banana cream pie and tiramisu and both were awesome! We also downloaded the app and got one complimentary jar You gotta give this place a try so worth the treat on any day!

Today we stopped by jars to pick up a birthday dessert for my husband‘s birthday. Each jar was so unique and the flavors or unbelievably delicious. The staff was welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly. We can’t wait to go back and dry this soft serve and milkshakes.

Went there for the first time this past weekend. Different concept for deserts. They have custard based desert. I loved it. It was not too sweet. I tried tiramisu. The price is reasonable too. I will definitely go back.

Yelp
Staff (1) - The cashier was nice. 1 Cleanliness (1) - Counter service only and no tables, restaurante seemed clean. 1 Food (2) - I'm going to be blunt. I ordered something resembling a strawberry shortcake. It tasted artificial and overly processed. It's basically a Little Debbie cupcake cut into cubes with a dollop of pre-packaged vanilla pudding cup with food coloring. I ate 3 bites and threw out the rest. The whip cream was even fake. 0 Price (1) - Everything tasted artificial and inedible. 0

Yelp
Staff: We were helped by Eric and another guy who were both very nice. Quality/Quantity: We ordered 2 red velvet soft serve jars, a banana split jar, and a red velvet cheesecake jar. The soft serves are basically vanilla soft serve ice cream with red velvet cake inside. The cheesecake jar is cheesecake flavored custard with red velvet cake inside. I liked this one the best. Lastly, the banana split jar is vanilla/chocolate cake with chocolate and banana something but not actual banana. This was good and not too sweet like you might think. The portion sizes were fair. Value: I think a little high especially on the soft serve jars. The total was around $32 for our 4 items. Ambiance: Cute place but is missing a couple of chairs to sit inside or outside. Overall: I'd come back again.

Yelp
Son brought home a blueberry lemon and a gluten free Nutella chocolate jar on a late night outing so I can't address the service. He himself had a red velvet shake that he said he enjoyed. I had a bite of each and it is great for those of us who don't like desserts that are too sweet. I'm guessing it's made this way because there are many layers of different sweets in each cup that it would be too overwhelming if it was made traditionally sweet. It hit just the right note of refreshing sweetness and not cloying sweetness. And the difference in textures in every bite make it enjoyable. A nice change if you are looking for something a little different.

Yelp
Overly sweet, small portions for the amount you pay. Tastes like grocery store cake put in jar with jarred jam and cool whip. Wanted to like it but couldn't finish it due to sweetness

Yelp
I love banana cream pie and this one just was kind of lackluster... there are no real banana slices, it tasted kind of dry and I expected it to be moist5/10. The captain crunch was good, 7/10. You can't go wrong with Oreo cookie ice cream 10/10! Glad we tried it!

Yelp
Saw this come up on my feed and had to try it... Located off Greenfield near the movie theater and next door to Las Golondrinas parking is easy. Tried a couple of different jars and they were good... not gonna lie, they weren't "Oh my goodness" but worth a try to be sure. If I put my marketing hat on I would say Missed Opportunity on branding the box as well as the jar. Also missed opportunity on giving a lid with the jar for future use and branding. Kids would use it for a bunch of different things as would grandpas... just something to think about. Inside is very clean and you can order from an iPad if you want or order ahead. Would be nice if folks working the counter smiled...

Yelp
This place is so good! Very nice staff and the best sweet treats. The Memphis mafia (limited edition) is insanely good, the banana custard is perfect. Will be back for sure!

Yelp
We discovered this place through TikTok, and I'm so glad we did! I absolutely loved their dessert jars and ice cream cups--everything was delicious. I'll definitely be coming back to try more options, but what I had today was amazing!

Yelp
I was in the area and decided to grab some dessert. I thought the girl working was super friendly and helpful which stood out immediately! I tried the Red Velvet and German Chocolate Cake. Both had really good flavor but were pretty sweet. I wish there was a slightly smaller size but overall I think it's a good spot to run into for a quick treat if you're in the area.

Yelp
I seem to be in the minority here as other reviewers seem to love these mini cakes. I struggled with this review due to the old Yelp cliché: "I really wanted to like this place but..." It just shows that a concept by a "celebrity" chef doesn't necessarily translate into something great (it's not even a unique idea - more on that later). It also shows that a dessert that is visually cute and instagrammable doesn't necessarily translate into something that will be a taste treat. Sitting in a suburban plaza, this place sells what could be called "cakes in a jar". Apparently Mr. Celebrity Chef came up with over 160 flavors, eight of which will always be available and others which will rotate. They're pricey but they look wonderful. I stopped in and purchased a couple to take home and try. It's just a to-go place with no seating either inside or out. The best part of my visit was the woman working the counter who was super-friendly and bubbly. The flavors I chose were salted caramel brownie and gingerbread house. The problem with both was the lack of flavor (or just too subtle for me). The salted caramel brownie did have a delicious chocolate brownie covered with excessive whipped cream (or something similar that tasted like it) and a bland custard. But there was not a trace of the taste of caramel aside from a minuscule drizzle on top, nor even anything salty. The gingerbread house had the cute ginger cookie and gumdrops on top but that cookie was the only thing with ginger flavor. Again, lots of whipped cream and custard layered with some crumbles that had an extremely faint ginger flavor. If you like gobs of cream & custard you'll like these "jars". Even though this place didn't tickle me I wish them the best as I want small businesses to succeed. Give them a try as it's apparent most people like it. As an aside, there's a place in Lake Forest that has been making what I call "cake in a cup" for years which admittedly isn't as picture-pretty but is much more delicious and flavorful (and not very expensive). It's a place I often go to whenever I want "A Little Something Sweet" but I won't be so crass as to name a competitor in this review (insert winky-face emoji here).

Yelp
WHAT A TREAT! I mean that on several different levels! You need this in your life! A sweet experience in: - PRODUCT - Such creative, imaginative, tasty and not over the top sweet jars of single-serving goodness! Escape/avoid guilt. We can treat ourselves to a single-serving delight. It seemed to be a layered cake-like approach in a light plastic jar snuggly fitted into a neat box for ease of delivery and consumption. Since the jar is in the box, you can't see what in the next layer and what your next bite will be. How fun! Each bite is a scrumptious mystery! Out of this world flavors include: *GLUTEN FREE CHOCOLATE CARAMEL CHEESECAKE - I had it. Oh so good and not overly sweet! *VERY BERRY VANILLA CAKE *TRIPLE CHOCOLATE NUTELLA *SALTED CARAMEL BROWNIE *GINGERBREAD HOUSE *PEPPERMINT MOCHA EGG NOG and so much more! - CULTURE/VIBE - Bright, pink, fun , cheerful and welcoming light ambiance. - SERVICE - Friendly and helpful JARTENDERS! Love their fun branding :-) Quick service. - ORDERING - Easy. There are pictures on the monitors. So you can see how each item looks and know what ingredients make up that item. You can order at the main counter with a jartender. Or opposite of that, there are self ordering small screens. - SPECIALS - They have a gluten free item. Rotating seasonal ones. The staff mentioned that they are exploring sugar-free options. I appreciate their customer-centric approach. When in doubt, you can give them a call to find out what new choices are available when you're ready to check them out. - LOCATION - In a popular large shopping center with plenty of parking. - REWARDS - Download their app on Android or iOS. Requirement if you want to get their free treat this opening weekend. Besides, why not track your points to get rewarded for future gifts? - BEVERAGES TOO - Refreshers and soft serves. - OTHER - MORE ON THE WAY IN OUR AREA. YAY! Irvine, Corona Del Mar, Costa Mesa, Tustin, Buena Park, Brea, Cerritos, Fullerton, Huntington Beach, Placentia Looking forward to trying another flavor sometime soon!

Yelp
The presentation of these jars are almost too cute to eat! I ordered the banana creme pie jar and the red velvet cheesecake jar. Both were tasty, but definitely on the sweeter side (and I love my sweets). The banana one left me wanting a bit more custard and less cake. The cheesecake one left me wanting a bit more of a nod to the classic "cheesecake," although that cookie on top was a fun and delicious surprise. While these jars are big enough to share if you are into sharing your desserts (I'm not usually that person), $9 is a bit steep for a "let's grab this on a weeknight" dessert. I can definitely see this as a great treat for higher end parties & catering. If I ever host a "bougee" party in the future, you know where I'll be. Overall, I'm happy to see a unique new dessert place in the area.

Yelp
This is a brand new dessert place to go in Laguna Niguel. Fabio is famous from his restaurants and appearances on Bravo's Top Chef. These desserts in a jar are the BOMB. We ordered the Strawberry Shortcake, Salted Caramel Brownie, and Tres Leche. All three were really really really good. Will definitely be coming back soon. Plus it was nice to meet Fabio at the grand opening.

Yelp
The best ube cookie I've ever had in California! It had the perfect balance of flavors--just the right amount of sweetness, and the texture was spot on. Unfortunately, my brother devoured the whole box, and I barely got to try one. That single cookie was enough to leave me craving more. Definitely a must-try if you can get your hands on them!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has some FIRE options. Honestly, couldn't decide so we got a couple options. We will definitely be coming back here. The place is a cool spot too! And the service was top notch. Cheers!

Yelp
Such a fun concept and the Jars look amazing. Discovered this place because of their participation in OC Restaurant Week. Unfortunately, the flavors don't match the expectations created by how amazing the desserts look. Maybe adding salt would allow the flavors to pop and to contrast the sweetness.

Gabby A.

Yelp
Today we stopped by jars to pick up some birthday desserts for my husband's birthday. We were greeted by the most friendly staff and were able to learn about what it takes to build each jar. The jars were absolutely delicious! my favorite was the Nutella and the Oreo. Each bite was packed with flavor and had the perfect amount of every layer in each scoop. I can't wait to go back and try the soft serve versions.

Dallas W.

Yelp
Holy shit this was the best dessert ever. Got the strawberry shortcake jar. Hot damn. Just found a new dessert spot

Yelp
Incredible desert. We loved the red velvet. Was hard to stop eating it. Would definitely come back. Bethany, the owner, was so nice too.

Yelp
This dessert spot is a great addition to Laguna Niguel. The service is friendly and they are patient to explain the options. They serve little jars filled delicious flavors that will satisfy all ages. I had the Banana Cream Pie, which was awesome. First, the custard (pudding) was thick and flavorful. It left me wanting more. Next the wafers had crunch (as I do not like when the pudding makes the wafers all soggy). I, of course, used the wafers to scoop out my first bites. Finally the cake was soft with good flavor. My family had other flavors but they gobbled them up before I could even get a bite so I can only talk about the one that I had. Theirs looked great and they all ate in quiet, which I know is because they did not want to share. Look forward to trying new flavors that this place has and new ones that they have yet to imagine.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm glad to see new businesses in town. I visited on the second opening day. I like seeing variety in desserts and love cakes. I got a tiramisu. It's the cake quality level of a Ralph's cake slice unfortunately. The pudding is like Jello custard and the cake is forgettable. I wish the dessert quality was richer and more refined; this is just some basic cake that's very forgettable and any stay-at-home-mom could whip up.
google avatar

Tammi N.

Yelp

Yelp
Three stars for the presentation and concept but it was seriously bad. The portions were small, which wouldn't be a problem except there was barely a spoonful of cake inside. Cake was extremely dry and tasteless, not fresh or any moisture to it at all. It's paying $8+ for a barely there custard cup you won't want to finish. I think there's huge potential - if they rethought their ingredient quality and final product. Until then, avoid, unless you're up for disappointment.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
The cake was dry and the rest was too sweet. Also your app for android does not work...
google avatar

Yelp
This new dessert place just opened and it's excellent! They serve gourmet desserts in a jar, and they have lots of different flavors and they taste amazing! I'll definitely be stopping by there after eating out so I can try all of their different flavors. They said they do birthday parties and events which makes sense and I might use them for that too. Anyway, thanks for the delicious desserts and great customer service. Five out of five stars for sure!
google avatar

Lily B.

Yelp
So friendly and they even have gluten free! My fiance and I go to muse next door for sushi then stop by Jars for a sweet treat after. They even gave us dog treats for our puppy! Going back for sure.

Yelp
My new favorite dessert place in all of Orange County! Every JAR is amazing you can't go wrong! The second you walk in you are welcomed by a gorgeous and upbeat atmosphere & the sweetest staff! The menu is so easy to ready with pictures of each JAR so you know exactly what you're ordering. Just when I think I have a favorite JAR, I try a new one and love it just as much! They have their classic flavors and have rotating limited edition flavors so there is always new ones to try! I'm so glad to have JARS as a part of our community!
google avatar

Karen I.

Yelp
I had tres leche jar and it was soooo good. It was moist and creamy. Staff was welcoming. Wish they would have had someplace to eat it indoors.

Rudy P.

Yelp
We love jars in Laguna Niguel and join the rewards program and love coming in on Tuesdays for their specials. Make sure you check them out and check out their seasonal as well. Mona loves the red velvet. These are great for birthdays, parties, catering, and event events. Can't wait to use them as well.

Kaitlyn W.

Yelp
It's super easy to just go inside and order, comes out very fast and looks amazing! The inside of the restaurant is very festive, I think I may use their catering service for my next event. They taste just as good as they look, if not better!
google avatar

Chantel V.

Yelp
My son was browsing for dessert in the area and he randomly selected this dessert shop. The Jar shop is in a plaza area and there is plenty of parking available. When my kids and I pulled up we noticed no line and no people so it was quiet. The service was great as I told our server that it was our first time and he started speaking about the dessert options they offer.. but all I heard was "custard". So I ordered a red velvet jar and tiramisu jar and they offered soft serve too so I ordered two Fruity pebbles soft serve! They also have yogurt options was is awesome! So let me share that these Jar cakes were super delicious! Not too sweet and so packed with a punch of flavor! I don't visit the area often but I will surely come back for my Jar cakes and the red velvet one because oh my goodness they were so good, I'd totally recommend for any one looking for a different kind of "sweet" dessert!
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Yummmmm! I'm a desert lover and especially anything with ice cream. I got the caramel soft serve treat and it was great. It felt like a dessert from an upscale restaurant with all the layers, textures and flavors! I'm burned out on Yogurtland and Baskin Robbins, so this was a fun and welcomed change. Husband and wife owners partnered with the founder - of top chef fame: Fabio Viviani - https://youtu.be/Yi2aTWSMcbk. Nope no pasta or tomato based treats, but just sugary d-lish desserts that could be a small meal by themselves. Give them a try and enjoy!
google avatar

Josh P.

Yelp
I was really excited to finally try this place since it's so pricy for what it is! Banana pudding tastes SUPER artificial (you can tell it came from a banana jello packet, for $10 a jar, the least they can do is put quality ingredients in like home made banana pudding, NOT dry cake (idea, maybe try making your own in house sheet cake? It's cheap and isn't hard and dry like your current product, and give you a serving size no one should be paying more than $5 for. Highly recommend avoiding.

Kathy K.

Yelp
Cute little spot next to one of our favorite Mexican food spots.... We tried two of the jars. One was the Memphis Mafia and the other was the Strawberry Cannoli. We both enjoyed them tremendously! My other half was debating between two, and the person who served us actually threw the one he didn't choose in for no charge. We will be back for a special treat occasionally and recommend them! (I did have the same issue someone else had that the app didn't work. And I wanted to refresh my memory as to what was in the flavors we chose and they aren't on the website).
google avatar

Susie S.

Yelp
Delious treats. Unable to load app at this time. App Store says not available. We will return
google avatar

jenn m.

Yelp
This was a special earned treat after spring break for my kids and the presentation was exactly what they needed for a special SURPRISE! They loved them and couldn't even finish them. Portions are good and flavor is good. Not too sweet but sweet enough to be a dessert! At $7-9, we won't come often but will let the children earn these extra special treats.
google avatar

Lisa K.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place for a guilty pleasure. The only guilt my colleagues & I had was spending money on this. The Elvis dessert was disgusting & tasted like it had bacon bits instead of real bacon. The taste made me regret breaking my diet.
google avatar

Lilian G.

Yelp
This place is a haven for those with a sweet tooth! From the warm and inviting atmosphere to the impeccable presentation and mouthwatering flavors, every aspect of this place is designed to please dessert lovers. With a menu boasting an impressive array of delectable treats made from the finest and freshest ingredients, each bite is a burst of flavor and a feast for the eyes. The friendly owner and staff adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience, making this place a must-visit for anyone seeking a memorable dessert adventure. If I could give 10 stars, I would.
google avatar

Jenna K.

Yelp
Wow, this was on Uber Eats and I had never heard of it but it popped up as one of those suggestions to add into your order for free delivery so my partner and I went for it and ordered the Nutella one. Omg. New favorite treat; I should have taken a photo when it arrived because honestly it looked really cute, but as soon as we started eating it we couldn't stop I took a photo of our mostly finished treat just to prove we had it. Loved the buttercream and the cake. I've saved this spot and will definitely go back to try another jar. Only drawback was the pudding was too rich for me, but I don't like pudding to begin with, so probably a moot point. My partner likes pudding and said it was great.
google avatar

Mindy F.

Yelp
Jars in Laguna Niguel is fantastic. The banana cream dessert and tiramisu were particularly standout items. If you're in the area, definitely give Jars a try. You won't be disappointed! Welcome to the neighborhood!
google avatar

Sina F.

Yelp
Wait this is genuinely really bad--they layer stale Sara Lee pound cake with jello brand pudding and charge you ten dollars. Like seriously, please skip.
google avatar

Bo Y.

Yelp
My first visit to this place left me unimpressed, especially with the variety pack of desserts in jars. The Oreo cookie was overwhelmingly rich, making it impossible to finish even a single bite. I'd rate it 2 out of 10. The banana cream was marginally better, but still fell short of expectations, earning a 3 out of 10. Sadly, the tiramisu didn't fare much better, also receiving a 3 out of 10. The lemon coconut pudding offered a slight improvement, warranting a 4 out of 10. Overall, this establishment didn't meet my dessert standards. I'm giving it 2 stars mainly for the average service experience.

Jeffrey W.

Yelp
So I've been debating this review and even came back on a second occasion but, didn't take a picture of my food. I like the concept and idea however, I think the execution needs to improve for this place to really have me coming back to get treats here. Service: both times I was in the owner was there & she is very friendly and stands behind her business and is excited about it. Ambiance: it's nice, clean, and organized inside when it comes to the menu & decor Pricing: it's on the high end, I don't mind paying higher prices however, when the quality doesn't back it up then I have an issue. Product vs advertisement: I feel like all of my items ( 2 jars & a Sundae) all seemed to barely resemble what was depicted on the boards. With that being said they were all underwhelming compared to the marketing images. I did have one item "Oreo coffee cake" that I didn't even know had cinnamon in it until I brought it home. I was overwhelmed by cinnamon and didn't taste Oreo or coffee. It should have been named "cinnamon & coffee cake" since it was primarily cinnamon. Taste: Custard: when I think of custard I think of thick and rich flavors however, this product tasted very similar to instant jello. Cake: all cake inside of these items did unfortunately lack flavor. soft served: it was ok but, for the price I feel like it was very subpar & they really went short on the Oreos ( in my opinion) Overall: all items were very forgettable and I feel like they don't warrant the pricing. They either need to adjust pricing to be more on par with the market or they need to increase the richness these products are alluding to. My three stars are for the staff, owners, and concept.... The actual product isn't something I'd seek out at this current time vs. the neighborhood product offerings.

Yelp
Tried out the new Jars treats and was surprised to see a variety of options to choose from. The service was great despite it being opening weekend and it being crowded. The TV screens with the menu being very large really helped in picking your Jars and my favorite thing about the store layout. The red velvet cheesecake was perfect and so creamy and has a strawberry and mango refresher.
google avatar

Tawny P.

Yelp
The 2 stars are for presentation only. I tasted the banana pudding jar, red velvet cheesecake and the strawberry shortcake. They all had very mild flavor and the cake tasted as if it was boxed cake or stale. The whip cream taste like the whip cream you taste on the cupcakes from the grocery market. For $8.99 a little jar is not worth it. I do not recommend. This is the prime example of "Do not judge a book by its cover" it look more flavorfull in the pictures.

Carol R.

Yelp
i had a two-for-one coupon for new customers, so decided to give this neighborhood newbie a try. Nestled between Las Golandrinas great take-out and the hot sushi place Muse Sushi House is Jars. Great location! i had the Salted Caramel soft serve & my husband had the German Chocolate cake. i really enjoyed my treat and likewise my husband. Looking forward to trying another flavor-next up the Tiramisu & the Banana Cream Pie! Generous portions also! Nice having a dessert spot so close...
