The 22 Best Restaurants in Santa Fe, New Mexico | Eater

"A Madrid institution, Java Junction is the hub of this artsy desert community (and bona fide ghost town) nestled 20 minutes outside Santa Fe on the Turquoise Trail. The coffee beans, brewed in house, are roasted only 18 miles north of the shop. It’s also one of the only places open early that you can dependably pop into for an iced coffee to cool off. Be sure to sample the homemade pies, like rhubarb and blueberry, which rotate daily. The coffee shop also has an adjoining store as well as a bed-and-breakfast for those who want to stay the night. If you drive: Park up the road in a paid lot or on the street. Though there’s no sidewalks, everyone knows to slow down in Madrid." - Karen Fischer

We drive past this coffee shop all the time on our way to Santa Fe, today was the first time we stopped and it did not disappoint! Ordered a bagel + Iced Americano - delicious! Also, coffee iced cubes?! That’s genius!

The upstairs lodging at Java Junction is a HUGE room with its own balcony, a full kitchen, and comfy furniture. It was honestly a nicer room than some $500/night hotels I've stayed in! And it was perfect for facilitating visiting Madrid for a special event. It's in easy walking distance for Refinery 14 and the Mineshaft. The only thing to warn about are that it is not handicapped-friendly, it's accessed by a steep stair and the claw-footed tub could be difficult to get in and out of.

We stayed in the room above Java Junction while passing through Madrid. We arrived a bit early, but found a dedicated parking space without trouble, then explored the town while we waited for our room to be ready. Once checked in, we ascended the flight of stairs to our suite. ||The room was well appointed, with a fully stocked kitchen, a queen sized bed, a private deck and a bathroom with a full bathtub. It was clean and comfortable throughout the night. ||The water is drinkable but somewhat foul-tasting in Madrid due to their mining history, so they provided a jug of filtered water for us to draw from during our stay. The coffee shop closed at 4PM, and the property was quiet until the next morning.||As a frequent traveler, I appreciated the attention to detail. Each nightstand had an outlet with USB adapters, and the TV had a Roku that allowed us to connect to our personal streaming accounts. Nancy also went out of her way to make sure that all of our questions were answered.||In the morning, the coffee shop opened at 7, but you’d never know it from the comfort of the room. Around 8:30 I went down and obtained two breakfast burritos and some coffee (this was an additional cost as breakfast is no longer included in the stay, but being able to bring it upstairs and eat on the private deck was a nice perk.||Overall we very much enjoyed our night above Java Junction and would definitely consider staying again if in the area.

Google
Quirky little coffee shop on the Turquoise Trail from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. Excellent coffee and an interesting selection of gifts. Nice patio with umbrella tables. We did not stay in the accommodations so can’t taste AB’s review. But definitely stop for coffee!

Travis Siemon, Realtor

Google
The staff is friendly, the patio is shaded and peaceful, and the pastries are a nice bonus if you’re craving something sweet. One standout feature? The coffee ice cubes. This is a great touch—no watered-down iced coffee here.

Google
I don’t usually post reviews but this place is extraordinary. The beautiful room upstairs has covered patio and full kitchen which is fantastic if you choose to stay here. Also very impressed by the coffee, they use frozen coffee ice.

Google
The vibe is everything. It’s corky, cute, perfect. I got an iced white lightening per the barista’s recommendation, which was delicious. Wish i could have spent more time hanging out in the out door patio

Google
Stopped by on my way back home to get an iced chai latté. Service was friendly, and my order came out quick. My drink was on the milkier side and could have been much colder but it did the job on a very hot day.

Yelp
This is a cute little coffee shop. The desserts are yummy and the drinks are tasty. I started off with a cold brew which was good. Definitely quenches the thirsty on a hot day. I also got a cinnamon roll and slice of apple pie. The Apple pie was really good! If I didn't get so full, I probably would've had another slice. The cinnamon roll was decent--nothing out of the ordinary. The staff was super friendly and quick! I come here again!

Yelp
If you haven't been to Madrid you need to! Finally made it myself and what a fun little spot to visit. It's about an hour outside of ABQ. I've gotten the lavender latte with oat milk and the chai with oat milk both delicious!! The lavender latte is pretty sweet so recommend getting it half sweet if you don't want it too sweet. Pasties I've gotten are the brownie and blueberry scone scrumptious! Sorry no pictures of drinks or pasties. The shop also has a kitchen things and cowboy hats! Barista's have been so kind and helpful each time I have been!! Services and fast and friendly!

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in Madrid, we just stopped by for a snack/lunch on a hot day while walking around the area. We got blended mocha coffee-s and they were great, nicely made. The pastries looked invited, hard to decided, we went for cherry Danish and chocolate croissant, they were all fresh and delicious, really enjoyed them. They sell souvenirs as well, they also have a cute patio to enjoy your coffee. Nice customer service, the only complaint, the restroom is a portable one, so.... you get the idea. Great coffee, nice pastries, indie in a nice way, good food and service, laid back vibe.

Yelp
I ordered the chai latte, it's delicious. The apricot bread and raspberry danish was amazing! This is the best chai latte I've tasted.

Yelp
We sat outside in the heat and had a pretty decent cappuccino from here. Not too bad at all...

Yelp
Another place recommended by friends for their breakfast burritos & coffee. It's a shop with old wooden floors a small coffee brewing area with a single barista. The burritos were good as advertised, the vanilla latte was good, not bitter or burnt tasting. None of the pastries in the display struck my fancy. There was a well used coffee grinder for grinding your newly purchased been as well as a couple of T-shirts, one of which was a Zia with red and green chilis as a yin-yang in the center - it's a NM thing. There were drink containers, tea towels and trivets. As well as Mexican Chocolate, tea & coffee. A nice stop on a cold morning for coffee & food. Just find a place on the patio and you're all set. Plus, if you need a place to stay locally they have a B&B of 1 bedroom . But I can't speak to that.

Yelp
Stayed at the little bed & breakfast room on the way between Phoenix & Oklahoma City. So cute and well appointed! The patio is adorable and very comfortable. It was nice to be so close to the town and really great food. Some bumps because we arrived after the store closed, but SO worth it.

Yelp
Prices that would make Starbucks blush! Charged an extra $.50 for ice in my drink! No sign or notification of any kind, just an additional $.50 on an already overpriced drink. On top of it, it tasted like coffee, not sure why, perhaps they did not clean whatever utensils they use to make my chai. So I paid $6.21 for a try that I didn't even like, plus of course a tip is expected. I would give it one more try before completely giving up. Also, the server had a big attitude, when I mentioned the chai was expensive, and I expressed disbelief over being charged $.50 extra for ice.

Yelp
Everyone who has not made a visit to Java Junction is wrong. This is seriously the best coffee you can find in New Mexico.
google avatar

Gaby H.

Yelp
Great breakfast burritos! I had the black bean and green Chile and it was delicious! I also had the border java and if you like mexican chocolate milk, you'll love it! You can even add extra shots. They have a great outdoor patio and view of the town.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this little place! It has great coffee and a good selection of loose tea leaves too. They have a little shop in the back of it with wooden items such as exquisite cherry wood cutting board, cast iron cups, and much more. We got a kick out of their fridge magnet! Couldn't stop laughing on some of them. We could tell they have been carefully chosen and the owner must have a great sense of humor. This place also offer a cool little bed and breakfast above the coffee shop. We would like to stay their one of these days for a staycation. A cool spot.

Yelp
Nice little place that has great beverages, and I really liked the breakfast burritos. You can meet a lot of people from the area that have some little known info on things to do, and things and places to avoid. Like most little towns patience is a virtue, and you will be rewarded.

Leopi S.

Yelp
really nice vibe here. Really good coffee. And a extra nice little gift shop with things you actually want to have for a long time. Love this place. Always go there when I get into Madrid.
google avatar

Justine S.

Yelp
Awesome little coffee shop on the Turquoise Trail! We were recommended to stop by, but also decided to spend some more time in Madrid because of the many cars and ongoing festival we saw. I had the border mocha, which was awesome, and I love how their iced coffee uses actual coffee ice cubes! They have a pretty wise side-yard area with nice seating an wall of random signs... it's a great place to grab some coffee and also to just relax!

yarrow k.

Yelp
excellent mocha, super cute gift shop! we loved the ambiance and the cute patio. the staff are friendly and the service was great!

Yelp
I had an iced coffee and my girl got a cappuccino. The cappuccino was more like a latte and my iced coffee was good enough, it had coffee ice cubes which is novel. I'd get an iced coffee again but the espresso was not up to par with what I usually get in Albuquerque and I can brew better coffee at home. Not everybody is a coffee snob though right? It's a nice places to hang out and really fits the Madrid character.

Bill F.

Yelp
We always seem to stop here for beverages when visiting Madrid. Today was very hot! The barista was cheerful and helpful, the iced coffees and teas were great.

Jeff M.

Yelp
Best iced coffee in my life*. The owner was serving and gave us some great history about the town. * I'm not exactly an expert on iced coffee, but where else do you get iced cubes made out of coffee so your drink doesn't dilute?
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
It's near impossible to get a 5 out of me. I stayed in Sandia Park for 10 days and each time I passed through Madrid, I stopped for a coffee (4 times). Each time was delicious and I had 3 different baristas make my coffee. Do yourself a favor and stop, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
The coffee is to die for great customer service and affordable pricing. Cool hats and gear. Coffee ice cubes
google avatar

Clarisa H.

Yelp
This coffee shop has a chill atmosphere and a good selection of coffee. Interesting names and not all the regular flavors of a chain coffee shop like Starbucks. There is also a good selection of snacks and baked good. It's a great place to go work, read or have a conversation. Lots of seating available.
google avatar

Yelp
So happy to have stumbled upon this place while driving from Albuquerque to Santa Fe along the historic Tirquoise Trail. Fresh organic coffee and as they say bad coffee sucks!! You won't find it here.
google avatar

Lance A.

Yelp
Imagine a B&B with only one guest room, and that guestroom takes up the entire top floor of a historic two-story building. That's what this place is! Downstairs is a good coffee shop that closes in the late afternoon, so you have the property to yourself in the evening. Charming, rustic, and adorable. The room is actually more like a characterfully furnished studio apartment and includes a kitchen, vaulted ceilings, skylights, and a private balcony. Nancy was a very gracious host. In fact, when the next morning the water was cut off to the property through no fault of the owners, the owners on their own initiative immediately offered to credit the cost of the stay. One important note is that we had no cell service with either AT&T or T-Mobile in the town of Madrid or anywhere nearby. (The room has Wi-Fi, so don't worry about that.) So you need to make sure that you make arrangements to get the key in advance because the coffee shop closes in the afternoon, and you may not have a way to call the owner if you wait until you get to Madrid. We would certainly stay here again if we needed a place to stay in Madrid.

Yelp
Cute place... but owners should know about how truly bad the service was! Offensive from beginning to end! The coffee was good, pie was store bought... was going to buy the cute shirt with chili zia, but she was so rude and cold, I changed my mind! She needs to lose her job because she simply does not know how to deal with people!!

Yelp
Awesome coffee drinks and cool atmosphere. Great way to start our visit to Madrid NM. Actually, it was so good that we got more coffee on the way back out too! I really liked the coffee ice cubes on the cold drinks. Nice touch. They could use a nicer bathroom though.

Yelp
The is essentially the second floor of the coffee shop in Madrid, Java Junction. The room is spacious, equipped with satellite TV and wireless Internet. There's a back porch that looks out on the hills surrounding the town. Minuses are few but significant. There is no shower, just a big tub, and during our stay fumes of raw sewage from a port-a-potty outside occasionally wafted on to the porch and into the bathroom when the wind was right (or wrong, depending on how you look at it). Having said that, the room is spacious, and beautiful without being touristy, i.e., you know you're in Madrid, an unincorporated village along the "Turquoise Trail," state highway 14 which meanders between Santa Fe and east Albuquerque. Big plus, there's a coffee-shop downstairs and the coffee is excellent and breakfast is included in your stay. Unfortunately, probably due to the currently-depressed economy, they denied my companion a second cup of coffee on the house, and when I had to make a change in plans suddenly they enforced the 48 hour cancellation policy even though I had stayed one of the two nights I reserved and I gave them all of the advance notice that I had. Also, I have to say, there's no reason for the person manning the coffee shop to be as surly as she was. It was impossible to get her to smile, even though I was as cooperative as I could be. But, These things aren't high on my list of values for places to stay, so I still think this place is worth a visit if you need a cozy room with good WiFi in Madrid. It's just unfortunate that in a town that relies entirely upon the tourist trade for it's economic base treats us like intruders and sources of irritation. But, if you're like me and refuse to hold that kind of petty short-sightedness against a B&B, you'll enjoy your stay here. They also reserve you a place to park your car, which can be quite a perk in Madrid, particularly during weekend days. The wifi Internet is fast and they paint a strong signal in the room.

Yelp
OK coffee but the bagel was stale. Also, their costumer bathroom is a portable bathroom outside. That is fine, but it always drives me crazy when places treat their costumers like second class citzens. They clearly have a running bathroom inside. That being said, there are some cute items at the gift shop but nothing that cant be found elsewhere.

Yelp
I drive all the way from Santa Fe just to get their FRAPPUCCINOS! Both chocolate & vanilla varieties are soooo gooood. Plus, you get to hang out with the local Madroids. That's a 5-star right there. Honorable mentions: They have wifi (cuz you cant get ANY RECEPTION in Madrid ANYWHERE) & while refrigerator magnets tend to be the most trite form of human communication ever contrived, every refrigerator magnet you WOULD even possibly want can be found here. Absolutely hilarious.... while you wait for your frappuccino to finish whirling in the blender.

Yelp
We stopped in here while visiting Madrid. It's a cute little place. The lady behind the counter was very friendly. We both ordered a piece of pie and a drink: me a chai latte and my husband a strawberry smoothie. He loved the smoothie. My chai did need some work. They had soy milk, which was good. The chai wasn't mixed great and seemed to come from a powder vs. tea so I only had half of it. I had a piece of strawberry rhubarb pie and I was so full I didn't even bother with lunch.

Yelp
Coffee was amazing and the breakfast burritos were quite yummy. The B & B was super cozy and Nancy was very sweet and accommodating. Definitely a great place to soak up the awesome hospitality of this lovely New Mexico town.

Yelp
I stopped in Madrid on the way from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. I had read a bit about its history, how it became a ghost town and how it got another life through hippies moving in. I very honestly didn't think much of Madrid when I got there, in my opinion it is not any different from other tourist traps and it really had nothing going for it, at least not in my option. The only place that stood out to me and that I liked was Java Junction: good coffee, excellent cheesecake, friendly lady behind the counter, cool T-shirts and other stuff.

Doris D.

Yelp
Just bloody awful, and yes, the dude behind the counter treated us like lepers.
google avatar

Erin H.

Yelp
Once again (and as it should be) the journey was more surprising than the destination! Traveling from Albuquerque to Santa Fe on the Turquoise Trail I fell in love with Madrid! A dusty, funky town the Java Junction is the best. I still use the mug I bought here - you'll love it.
google avatar

Ophelia N.

Yelp
Java Junction has really great coffee (the ice for the iced coffee is made with coffee!), the iced tea (black) was refreshing and delicious. They also have delicious green chile burritos (which they are happy to warm up for you) and the beef and bean chimichanga was a perfect snack. The barista was super sweet and awesome to us. To top it off they had really cute one of a kind clothing! They also have a nice selection of souvenir food items. Apparently, there is also a room on the second floor that you can rent weekly or nightly. There are only two other places I know of to stay in this awesome little town. You really should stop here if you are driving on this route. I will definitely be back.

Sally B.

Yelp
Best Mocha I've ever had. 4 in our group of 10 got mochas, and everyone agreed!! Had to go back the next day to get another. Smooth, tasty. Wish I didn't live 6 hrs away!!
google avatar

Shad A.

Yelp
Hippie spot for sure. I'll be back on my HOG real soon
google avatar

Kewl K.

Yelp
Mix one part bed and breakfast, one part great coffee joint, one part joke gift shop, one part alternative art and clothing boutique together, and you still wouldn't have the specialness of java junction. Nestled in the little town of Madrid, New Mexico, population 149, artist's escape and old mining town, this little store is trying to be 5 things at once and has a little attitude to boot. There was definitely a bit of sass from the barista, but she was oh so fun and the store was a great mix of things, many with a definite point of view. Plus, they have a little B & B upstairs for those who find themselves charmed by the little town.

B3todd ..

Yelp
This place has amazing iced coffee! They even make their ice cubes with coffee, which adds an extra touch. And you must try their caramel brownie... one of the best gooey, delicious, perfect consistency brownies we've ever had. On top of all this, the place is absolutely adorable. If you're visiting Madrid, (we are tough critics from NY), I highly recommend you stopping by here.

Hybrid T.

Yelp
We stayed one night at the B&B and loved it. Great room, clawfoot tub, sweet back porch. Well-equipped and homey. Would recommend it, and would go back. Merritt, who checked us in from the coffee shop downstairs, was so welcoming we felt like honored guests!

KA P.

Yelp
Cute space, nice people. However, the lattes tasted more like high fructose corn syrup than coffee. I'm not sure mine actually contained any coffee. Seriously, sweeter than Starbucks. I cannot stress this enough. I have not tried just plain coffee, but I would recommend trying that over the "winter lattes."

Yelp
3rd world ammenities at a SanteFe price.Rude staff. If your not sold yet try giving this place your business in the offseason, drop 560 us dollars for 3 days and then have them illegally use your credit card and take an additional 140 dollars out of your account because your dog peed on the outdoor deck. This is the javaJunction experience.Lets not forget that you get to enjoy all of this with the scent of poo from the outdoor portapotty right next to your lodging. An ancient septic system that you cant put tp in and a hotwater heater that that couldnt be any larger than 20 gal.But hey!At least you have a huge clawfoot bathtub to not be able to enjoy. This is what you have when you get hippies running a B and B.The only problem is some of us out there like to bathe and when we are on vacation we really dont want to smell poop.Either from our high priced lodging or from the locals in the coffe shop in the morning.Small things to ask for I know, but alot of people are difficult that way.Besides a trip to Madrid Nm doesnt have to be like a Peace Corps service in Bangledesh.
