Java - Review - Ketchum - Sun Valley - The Infatuation

"The original Java location was created as the ultimate hangout for its founder, a man whose look—thick square glasses, long hair, indie band t-shirts, and a thin hipster scarf—was so iconic that locals dressed as him for Halloween. He passed away in 2020, but his passion for motorcycles, skateboards, and music are injected throughout the coffee shop and café in touches like laminated band photos as table markers for your food orders. The drink menu has all the coffee classics, but you should order their famous Bowl of Soul, a specialty mocha that uses Mexican hot chocolate and comes topped with homemade whipped cream. Add on a high-protein turkey scramble or a heavy breakfast burrito, and check out the long display case of scones, muffins, and cookies." - Hayden Seder

A motorcycle, skateboard, and punk aficionado who passed away in 2020, he injected these elements throughout the coffee shop and café in the form of touches like framed black-and-white motorcycle art on the walls and laminated band photos as table markers for your food orders.  The drink menu has all the coffee classics, but you should order their famous Bowl of Soul, a specialty mocha that uses Mexican hot chocolate and comes topped with homemade whipped cream. Google
Delicious iced Thai coffee (latte with a bit of sweetened condensed milk). So good I came back the next day and had the same thing. Great atmosphere and very fast service!

Google
Obviously popular amongst the rich folks. Coffee was good but food was less than desirable. They did not get one of our names right on coffee or food. We did not get our food made correctly and when one of our party went to ask about getting it made correctly he ended up walking into the kitchen for the adjustment. Cute space for coffee and chat but not a lot of space inside or out for a big party.

Google
I went here twice while visiting Sun Valley and was not disappointed! Good coffee, especially oat milk cappuccinos and great pastries, including gluten free items from Three Peas GF bakery. The holiday muffin was cranberry orange and so freaking delicious. I also had the breakfast sandwich on a nice buttery croissant that was pretty good!

Google
Cute place, great food. I wish we lived here. On our recent drive through the Sun Valley area, we came here two mornings in a row. Lots of delicious food options, and the Bowl of Soul is not to be missed.

Google
This place is really struggling. Went here with my wife and was not at all impressed by the food or coffee. My cap was drip coffee with a tiny bit of milky foam on top. Very unimpressive for the price, I imagine there are much better options in town.

Google
Absolutely incredible coffee shop. The OG coffee shop in the area. The bowl of soul is one of the best specialty coffee drinks I’ve had. I usually spend most of my coffee trips to third wave specialty shops, but this place is very special to me. Would highly recommend visiting here, best coffee in Sun Valley in my opinion.

Google
super good drinks! this place can get really busy though so be prepared for that, the staff handles the crowds very well though! The service is super super good and the vibes are high. WAKE UP AND DESTROY 🔥🔥🔥

Google
Hottest latte I’ve ever been served. It was literally scalding hot and my mouth is still burned days later. I’m a huge Java fan and have been a customer of the Hyde Park location for 15 years.

Yelp
Java on Fourth is a very busy establishment but their service is so fast and pleasant your meals arrive quicker than you would expect They are very pet and vegan friendly There are quite a few plant based options although they run out of baked goods quickly so you need to come early if you wish to get plant based baked goods.

Yelp
This place is super cute and seemed like the main coffee spot in town. It was very busy and there was a line out the door. Service was quick and we ordered and got our drinks/food with minimum wait! The lattes were not great in my opinion. The coconut mocha was super syrupy and our lattes were mainly milk. We also ordered a burrito and it didn't have a ton of flavor. Overall, I think this spot has great potential but could focus more on the quality of food and drinks!

Yelp
Honestly- I'm on board with some of the other reviews. The food is ok, coffee was good, but the attitudes and customer service leave much to be desired. Sad that such a cute establishment could suffer because of poor staff attitudes. Update - went in to use the restroom as we were leaving and the angry lady with glasses was loudly complaining about customers she was clearly upset with IN FRONT of other customers. Nice behavior guys.

Yelp
service? okay. couch? good. coffee? ass. food? very ass.........................................................................................

Yelp
Java has been a favorite stop in Ketchum for more than 30 years (yikes!). The only thing that has changed is that the menu continues to grow. The coffee and poached eggs are my favorite and the service always seems quick. The inside of the coffee shop has character and the decor has remained the same since my first visit. Easy to access, the line is inside during cold weather, and you'll run into your old friends.

Yelp
Food was yummy, iced lattes were weak. I went every morning of my trip because it's cute and there are a ton of options. But last morning here and the older lady with glasses working was not nice at all, and my 12oz latte was $7.50 I wish I would have just turned around and walked out. And if I was here longer I probably wouldn't have gone back after that interaction with her! Not the biggest fan. Be nice to customers (:

Yelp
The young man that took our order was awesome. We ordered an Americano, house drip, and a cranberry scone, all were delicious. Loved the temperature of our coffee--nice and hot! Look forward to returning.

Marie B.

Yelp
Don't know who the older woman with glasses is but don't order coffee when she is working. Extremely rude, snarky and does not have customer service skills. Walked in stood up front after she made eye contact with me while she was sitting in her chair at the end of the coffee bar on her cellphone. Girls in the kitchen should be up front considering they know how to be kind to others. I won't be coming back, sad to say because I actually love Java.

Yelp
Cute place! We got the Hummus plate & turkey sandwich. Super yummy! Caramel chai was amazing. Tastes a lot like a Dutch Bros golden eagle Chai!

Yelp
We enjoyed our morning at Java. I ordered an americano and loved the coffee so I decided to purchase a bag of beans. My husband got a matcha latte - but it was sooo powdery and not very good. He didn't drink it. Drinks were made quickly. Staff was nice but not overly warm or friendly. You can tell they deal with a lot of tourists. I got an everything bagel to eat and it was yummy. Hubby got the macho burrito. He enjoyed it but said too much beans and picked several out. It also came drizzled with some kind of sauce but then was not served with napkins or cutlery so points for presentation here but not practicality. He made a mess since the sauce blends in with the tortilla. I would suggest putting the sauce on the side or issuing a warning here lol. We would return but we would adjust how we make our orders since they don't prompt you to do so.

Yelp
Can't speak to the food as I only ordered coffee, but the coffee was pretty bad and the service was below average.
google avatar

Munzer Q.

Yelp
One of the best places In our town to enjoy coffee, breakfast, bakery goods, lunch sandwiches while chilling inside or outside. It has an awesome vibe and locals and visitors all love this spot. Enjoy!

Yelp
I wish I had found Java On Fourth my first day in Sun Valley and not my last! It was a very busy spot, but the line moved quickly. And it didn't take long until my coffee was in hand. Shortly after breakfast was delivered to my table. The burrito my husband ordered was called the Macho burrito. It was proportionately filled and huge. The OJ was fresh squeezed and some of the best we have tasted. My scramble was clean, simple and delicious. We took two treats to go. Kitchen sink cookie and a apple turnover. The price was right and the service was impeccable. It is a crowded cafe, but there is plenty of seating. You just have to be patient and that's not hard when the outcome is a filling and delicious breakfast and great cup of coffee. Cheers!

Yelp
Best spot for a quick coffee or breakfast! So many healthy and tasty breakfast options. Don't skip the Bowl of Soul, I have to get at least one every time I'm in town. Best local spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Not that Ketchum is popping with options, but Java on Fourth seemed to be a popular spot in the area. Got an avocado toast that was literally a dry piece of bread with slices of avocado on top. Was hoping for a little more flavor. Maybe some oil or salt and pepper, but it was plain and not great. Latte was good though! For how many people were there, the service was actually fast and we received our food and drinks without too long of a wait.

Carolyn L.

Yelp
Super cute place in an adorable house! Very busy on Sunday afternoon, so not a place to go if you're in a rush, but a nice place to chill out and read the paper!
google avatar

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Great pick me up. The woman at the counter has a ton of energy and it's infectious even before the coffee!

Leah T.

Yelp
very cozy coffee shop with a nice deck. the coffee is alright, but the handmade whipped cream is delicious. the usual is probably the best thing on the food menu. go for the basics here.

Susan L.

Yelp
I found my perfect pre-ski breakfast at Java on Fourth: a large "Bowl of Soul" and a bowl of oatmeal with steamed milk and bananas. JOF has set my expectations of other coffee houses so high that I'm bound to be disappointed from here on out. All I can do is dream of coming back to Ketchum and Sun Valley. I hope the snow will be plentiful next year, so I can return. To all of you locals, enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp
I didn't love my breakfast burrito (too many beans) or my matcha latte (too bitter, not enough milk). It is a cute place with quick service for a breakfast on the go!
google avatar

Ha B.

Yelp
Good coffee. Simple, yet tasting food. Would def come back. Giving 3-star since it's not much to rave about.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is easy to get too. Owner is ever present and passionate about "pixie dust" required to make one of the best coffee shops....IN THE USA! From the bowl of soul to the Keith Richards: you will go back again and again. We've never had anything like this. Food feeds your inner bohemian soul as well. The staff welcome you and serve with pride and consistent excellent quality. It's not Starbucks, but so much more: it's an experience.
google avatar

Addie S.

Yelp
Counter person not friendly to me at all or person behind me in line. Ordered an overpriced smoothie which wasn't good and came with no lid and dripping all over sides. Disappointed because I used to love this spot :(
google avatar

Bess B.

Yelp
Delicious coffee, INSANE pastries and friendly staff. Also lots of seating. A must-visit if you're in town.
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
Nice spot, very chill. Lots of bread and a less than overwhelming order of eggs and ham. So far it's the best breakfast I've found this week.
google avatar

Kim F.

Yelp
Great coffee and snacks. Get the rice krispy treat... just do it! Make sure you go at an off time though, it's popular and the wait can be long.
google avatar

Lata A.

Yelp
Agree with other reviewers about poor service and no sense of urgency. We tried the blended bowl and the oatmeal cookie. The blended coffee was super icy and not worth the money at all. Cookie was more crispy than chewy and not that great either. Line moved super slow and they did not even call our names when our order was ready. To make things worse, their CC machine wasn't working so we had to go get cash and pay extra ATM fees. Thought it will be worth it since this place is so popular..NOT! Now making way better blended coffees in our airbnb for fraction of the cost.

Yelp
Yum!!!! We found this place on Yelp and it was soooooooo good!!! Fun vibe, environment and everyone was so friendly--staff and those there!!! We ordered avocado toast(on sourdough), skinny mini and the granola!!! Will definitely come back.
google avatar

Sara K.

Yelp
Coffee was fantastic and so was cranberry/orange muffin (definitely fresh, local made) but the wait was probably 20 minutes for coffee. We were visiting, so I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Not sure I would wait that long all the time. We sat outside as it was very loud and crowded inside (everyone waiting for drinks) and it was impossible to hear them yell your name. Maybe a better system. Excellent coffee though!

Yelp
Every time I visit Sun Valley, I hit up Java for a Bowl of Soul. The Mexican chocolate and cinnamon pair perfectly with the smoothest espresso one could hope for. Topped with a little whipped cream makes this a delicious treat, from the first sip to the last. Even my fiancé, who isn't usually crazy about coffee, loved it. The 12 oz has 1 shot of espresso, so I added one more for a little extra oomph before hitting the slopes.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
Coffee snobs and home roasters will be very happy here. Java on 4th is the best cup I've had since being on the road away from home for a week. Super friendly staff, the food looks good, too, but I didnt try it yet.
google avatar

Daria B.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. I got here at 12:55, about 5 minutes before the kitchen closed at 1. I stood at the register ready to order, waiting for someone to take my order for a while. The girl working there was taking out the trash, and when she finished and finally came to the register it was exactly 1 pm. I proceeded to order a sandwich and she cut me off and said, "kitchen is closed." I tried to ask her to let me still order since id been there waiting to order for the last 5 minutes but she just kept cutting me off saying since it was now 1 pm she would not take my order. Such a rude, inconsiderate, selfish service person.
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
Picked up a delicious breakfast to go on our way out of town. Hubby had the Hippy burrito. The white sauce had nice spice to it. I had the poached eggs on toast. Bread is locally sourced. Really delicious raspberry jam. The eggs were perfect. The coffee was top notch. Got a cookie for later

Yelp
Stopped in Katchem for 2 nights on our road trip home from Oregon. This place was my favorite!! Great food, excellent coffee, and friendly staff. This place did not disappoint! Generous serving sizes and great atmosphere! If you'er in Sun valley Idaho this is a must stop for breakfast and great coffee!!

Yelp
My friend and I were visiting Ketchum and took the opportunity to try a new cafe, since we can have Starbucks anywhere, anytime. They had a great looking food menu, but we stuck with beverages. I got a nonfat matcha latte, which was great, and my friend liked her drink as well. The people there were really nice. The ambiance was awesome. I loved the decor. It feels really homey but also modern and cool. If I ever come back to Ketchum, I'll visit this place again, and hopefully the outside construction will be done so I can see it in its full glory. If it's as cute on the outside as it is on the inside, it'll look awesome.

Yelp
Ordered a bag of coffee beans, waited for 30-45 minutes without it being finished so I walked to the front and they said they forgot about my order. After another 5-10 minutes I finally got the bag of coffee. I understand a 5-10 minute wait because this place is busy but I saw at least 40 people order and get served before me. All I got in return was a free drink card. I did tip, wish I hadn't.

Laurie M.

Yelp
Top Quality coffee beans, expresso machines and baristas make for an excellent latte! Fresh baked goods onsite every morning -pastries and muffins Best Sun Valley breakfast hands down! Awesome oatmeal, great egg dishes and burritos too! Great service and several cozy places to hang out inside or on their covered patios.
google avatar

Brenna T.

Yelp
Great local coffee shop with great breakfast! Perhaps not the place to go when you're in a hurry, but definitely worth a visit for some quality coffee and pastries!

Harris H.

Yelp
Mediocre drinks, less than mediocre baked goods. Better coffee in town with shorter lines.
google avatar

Michele S.

Yelp
30 minutes before heading to the airport was enough time to check out a coffee shop so we went to java since it seemed like a cute spot in town. I came in on a Monday morning and the place was only half packed so we were able to order our drinks and find 2 tables to sit down at. I enjoyed a dirty chai (chai latte with 1 shot of espresso) and it was made perfectly with not too much foam and the baristas were friendly. The coffee shop was very cute inside and cozy. There were some pastries laid out but it looks like a place where you can enjoy a pastry and drink but not really a place to grab a bite to eat. I think if you have a few minutes to relax, definitely stop by this place.

Diane J.

Yelp
We frequent local coffee shops whenever we travel. This shop had great coffee! The Mexican Mocha was next level! We also had pastries one morning- again outstanding!
google avatar

Penelope T.

Yelp
Very cute location and aesthetic. I was excited to try this coffee because of all the great previous reviews. I ordered an iced americano and the shot tasted over-extracted. The cashier seemed overwhelmed so I assume they were understaffed and busy so they were probably serving bad shots. Super bummed my coffee tasted like an ash tray!
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
We ordered two oatmeals. No sugar and almond milk. Both arrived with milk, brown sugar and bananas. No refund and no one really cares it was completely wrong. If you care about your diet, think twice.

Peggy P.

Yelp
The food was great and the coffee was too! the atmosphere was comfortable. Super crowded on weekend, so go early.
google avatar

Eva K.

Yelp
I come here every time I'm in town. "The Usual" bagel is great and so is the "Bowl of Soul."

Johnny L.

Yelp
3 STRIKES. 1/2 star or less. This is not the establishment it used to be. Service is RUDE. 3 visits, different workers, same rudeness. Yes, this is typical for Sun Valley but quadruple!
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Ordered two, double shot lattes to go. As an espresso enthusiast it was immediately clear by grind time and extraction color/flow rate and time of extraction that a single shot was pulled for each. The milk froth looked pale as well. I noticed a gallon of skim milk sitting out next to the barista and asked if they had used that milk and if they had if they could please remake it to which the cashier (who didn't pull the shots) quickly exclaimed that 2% is the default and that "for sure it's not skim". After one taste it was confirmed there was indeed an over extracted single shot in a skim milk latte. Gave the employees several opportunities along the way to change or even remake but ultimately they stood their ground and we ended up asking for a refund as the manager was unavailable. Not the place to go if you are wanting a thoughtfully created espresso based beverage with staff who want you to be satisfied as a customer.

Yelp
We were looking for a fun place to eat for our first breakfast in the Sun Valley/Ketchum area. We read some really good reviews on Yelp, and we were sold when we saw pictures of the avocado toast. Naturally, we ordered the avocado toast and added a scrambled egg to the side to complete the meal prior to hiking Bald Mountain. We were not disappointed. The food and coffee was fantastic!!! Not only was the food amazing, the owner, we guessed, was just a very down to earth wholesome dude. He saw my deployment shirt and started up a conversation about the military. FYI, this cafe is military friendly which goes along way for us. To finish the story, the food was good a filling we didn't get hungry throughout he whole hike and we tons of energy. Good food, good vibes, good people!

John S.

Yelp
Angry hippies. Place needs to tighten up big time! Always screwing orders up. Needs new mgmt and $500k renovation
