17 Best San Francisco Coffee Shops

"Ocean Avenue plays host to lots of fantastic restaurants and bars, but few destinations are as open, enormous, and affordable as Java on Ocean. Google
A hidden gem with flavor, heart, and soul! I had the Beef Kabob Wrap for lunch at Java on Ocean, and I’m still thinking about it! The wrap was absolutely delicious — packed with fresh, halal ingredients, perfectly grilled, and full of flavor. You can tell the care that goes into the food here. What really made the experience special was the vibe and hospitality. The owner was incredibly gracious, and the service was top notch from the moment I walked in. I asked for hot sauce and was guided to a shelf with over 20 varieties — yes, 20! It felt like a hot sauce tasting tour. As I sat down to eat, I noticed the peaceful ambience — with real love birds chirping and singing in the background. It added such a calming, joyful energy to the space. Whether you're coming in for a wrap, dessert, cake, or just a cup of coffee, this place has soul. Definitely a 5-star experience for the food, the service, and the serene atmosphere. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
I am particularly fond of Ocean Java, where I am greeted with a warm and welcoming staff. The ambiance is truly exceptional, and the delightful melodies of the canaries enhance my visit. I frequent the coffee shops primarily on weekends to dedicate myself to my graduate school assignments, and I would not trade this experience for any other.

the mushroom sandwich is just delicious. staff is so kind. the place could be a bit cleaner?

If thievery corporation were a coffee shop this would be it. Appeals to young and old, trip hop vibes, greenery, chill atmosphere

Google
I am incredibly suprised at the reviews here mentioning quality customer service. Every single time I have been here I have had exceptionally rude service from the workers here. SF has GREAT food *and* service experiences, you don’t need to pick one or the other just go somewhere else where they value their customers. Gave them a star for the transparency, they make great sandwiches which in fact were the ONLY reason we returned. Drinks are decent, I like the variety. But no longer going back after our last experience where they got so angry and had the worst attitude when our drink came hot instead of cold. We asked nicely and didn’t want to inconvenience anyone, even just a cup of ice so we could pour the drink over ourselves and got so much backlash. I could go on and on, not once have I personally experienced decent service here but they’re not worth the energy, not worth my business or yours.

My husband and I have been coming here since it opened. We love it here. We don't live in San Francisco but every time we come to visit my family we make sure to come get a yummy coffee and pastry.

Google
“If you didn’t like it, it’s not our problem.” Yep, that’s what I was told when I asked to exchange an overly sugary turmeric chai for a regular latte. Rude male barista. Overpriced. Soggy croissant that was microwaved with eggs… Disappointed because the atmosphere was down to earth and neighborly. What a waste of nearly $30. Yes, I tipped and even bought a snack power bar too thinking it would be a great experience.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! If you're traveling through and want to connect with the neighborhood, this is where you can do that. Great coffee, delicious snakes, cool vibe

Yelp
One of my favorite cafe's to study and lock in SF!! I usually get their chicken hummus wrap!! Its so flavorful! The cafe's aesthetic is just so cute to study too! Also, I usually don't drink coffee or any lattes like that but I did try their rose lattee a couple times and I like it!! Everyone here is so friendly too which made it such a great experience!! 5/5

Yelp
10+ years ago I gave this place 4 stars because it was the go to place on ocean for coffee and lunch. Fast forward to 2025, Java on ocean has fallen off quite a bit. Prices have gone up while the quality of their food have gone down and drinks have stayed stagnant. I came by for a garlic bagel and it just wasn't what it use to be. It was once a delicious garlicky cream cheese bagel and now it just tastes like a cream cheese they sprinkle garlic seasoning on and called it a day. That for $8 is wild. I hope they spend some time to revamp a little and make some improvements as they sure need it.

Yelp
i come here everytime i visit san francisco since my sister lives here, and the food is great, but what ruins my time here everytime is the horrible staff, they are actually some of the rudest staff i've ever encountered (and i work in the food service industry too!!) coffee is mid, definitely NOT worth the $9 (which is crazy). everytime i come here i have one of the ladies (or the older man) here give me the most insane attitude. they assume the customer is always wrong whenever they make a mistake with the order, the lack of accountability or understanding comes off like they are not welcoming to anyone (unless ur an old white man) . Now, i will give it to them, the bagels are incredible, its the ONLY reason i keep coming back because this staff is pretentious, obnoxious, and rude, and the coffee is the most mid coffee you'll ever drink, save your $9. they accidentally made our coffee hot when we wanted it iced, and my boyfriend told the gentlemen "I'm so sorry could I actually get this iced" and older guy turned around and shouted at me "We're going to give you a cup of ice and YOU'RE gonna deal with it!" with an angry, aggressive tone. we were actually shocked, trying to be understanding and say he had a bad day, but he's like this with us everytime we're here. also the girls were being ridiculously kind and flirty with my boyfriend but when it was my turn to order, the switch was insane, i could not believe the difference, i got the worst mean girl vibe, they were sassing me, looking at me in a judgemental manner, and spoke to me with such a prentious and rude attitude, despite me genuinely trying to be kind with them (cause they're making me food! i don't want them to mess it up), and then finally my coffee came out, and mine alone came out tasting absolutely off... like i don't even think they made the one i ordered. anyways, if you want my advice, come in, just get the food, and don't tip until after you get your food, let the service speak for itself.

Yelp
Came here just for a quick cup of coffee and chai. The drinks were okay nothing spectacular. The staff seemed stressed or in a bad mood. They have lots of seating inside and even birds in a cage! Which was so cool. My cappuccino wasn't the best quality coffee I've had and I didn't finish it. The chai was spicy gingery and good there was okay street parking

Yelp
Food is solid. Don't expect to be blown away or disappointed. Large variety of choices, especially with sandwiches. No pork on the menu. The atmosphere is great if looking for a place to study or catch up with friends. There are available outlets in the walls if you are looking to charge a device. Service is quick and the staff are nice.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop that has good lighting and plenty of tables and chairs for your studying, reading, and hanging out needs. Great selection of treats and pastries, and canned/bottled drinks in their fridges. Coffee a bit pricey but still yummy. Barista was very nice!

Yelp
So friendly and the ambience relaxing. Sipping our coffee with the tantalizing pastries - we enjoyed the coffee cake and chocolate cake. The chocolate Cappuccino was great and with the added espresso shot, even better. Mahalo for everything

Yelp
Super spotty wifi but lots of seatings and food options! They have a forest-y theme going on with plants and green walls. The drinks are pretty mid; I got a White Chocolate Raspberry Oatmilk Mocha and it was too sweet/artificial tasting. It's also on the louder side in here so probably don't take meetings inside.

Yelp
came here saturday afternoon for a coffee and snack. small dirty chai latte that was filled with flavor and hit the spot on this rainy day. Lots of seating and a really cozy vibe with people studying or enjoying their coffee. pastries were alright, looks store bought not fresh. i got a smoothie here before that was good but pricey staff was very sweet and made a calm environment.

Yelp
Service and menu was good however they have 2 birds caged and separated. It is clear the birds are being held captive. When asked if they are left overnight owner got defensive. I advise owner to put them together or at least next to one another at the very least. It is a terrible thing to do to animals! https://avianenrichment.com/index.php/learn/emotional-needs/social-interaction

Yelp
The Berry Good Soy smoothie was delicious, and they allowed me to add raspberry at no extra cost. Lavender latte is also very good. The menu is pretty extensive. The service is great. The interior is very well decorated--lots of green and lots of good books laying around. Such a lovely ambiance to study in (but bring noise-canceling earphones)!

Yelp
whenever i'm in sf i always make sure to come here every morning! my family has lived up the street for over 20 overs and my great grandfather used to own a pet shop in this building. It's my favorite coffee shop in the area and i enjoy my morning walk to the shop and seeing the little bird

Yelp
Food is fantastic... We ordered 3 different kins of coffee drinks and each were the most perfect they could be!! The service was fast, friendly and on point! Definitely unique environment full of culture. Thank you family for making sure we are happy and feed.

Yelp
I enjoy the atmosphere in this neighborhood café. It's harmonious and peaceful - great for work or study. Nice employees, too.

Yelp
A cozy neighborhood coffee shop that also offers some pastries, teas, wraps, smoothies, and sandwiches. The pastries didn't look like anything special so I was not enticed to order anything. I wasn't too hungry so I just settled with a smoothie. I got a Chunky Monkey smoothie that was fine. Nothing special but nothing bad. It had oats, banana, milk, and a couple other ingredients. Although it wasn't busy the staff forgot my order. I tried to give them a chance and waiting about 15 minutes before I went to go ask them about my order. They apologized and made my smoothie right away. These things happen and it's totally fine!

Yelp
I was looking forward to checking out this little coffee shop after months of driving by and reading the reviews. Today was the day I finally came in. I ordered a latte and noticed all the yummy baked goods and options for various drinks and foods. However, at 6:05p, after I ordered my drink and sat down to enjoy it , the employee announced to myself and about 7 others customers that they "will be closing in a few minutes." I double checked my watch, the hours on yelp, and the sign outside that confirmed the closing hour as 7pm. I even asked the employee about the hours and she stated that they close "early based on customers and cleaning needs" and confirmed the store "was now closed." I was confused and disappointed. Hoping this location can post accurate hours of operation for incoming customers like myself.

Yelp
This place has it all: immaculate vibes, singing birds, terrific beverages. and food that is WAY above average for your standard coffee shop (I'm hooked on the beef kabob wrap). Thanks for providing such a sweet respite with character!

Yelp
I love this quirky little coffee shop. Drinks are fabulous, food is delicious and the couple who are behind the counter are lovely. If they seem a little short with you, it's just because they are so focused on getting you a great product as quickly as possible.

Yelp
I really want to like this place because i live nearby and its cute and convenient but I don't get a friendly vibe from the staff, especially the older guy who always looks annoyed. Foods good. I only get regular coffee.

Yelp
Love this place! Sandwich was on a warm toasted ciabatta, 10/10. Great place to study and get work done, bright and has lots of outlets and seating.

Yelp
Java on Ocean is a Cute coffee house with great vibe. The Lavender Latte was tasty. But the Croissant could have been better. Croissant seemed old. And the baker quality seemed less than stellar even if it has been new. When asked, the person at the register could not provide the name of the company supplying their pastries That said, I would come back again to try out some of their other eats that are not a part of their pastry case. The people running the place were nice. And kept on top of everything. Music playing was great. Chill. And just the right volume to enjoy without being intruding. Clean tables inside and outside. Doggos seemed welcomed enough. At least for an order pickup. Certainly at an outside table. A many cool local cats at the table were talking, as were on any devices. Always a nice thing to see and experience. Location could hardly be better for the neighborhood coffee place. I like you Java on Ocean! I'll be back! #### Update for business manager Mark's benefit. # I did order the croissant warmed up, I also added a spot of honey to the plate for dipping. Both are things I do for nearly every coffeehouse croissant order I make. Neither did much to enhance the croissant. Are your croissants delivered fresh daily? Who makes them? If they are delivery, then the baker either held them too long before delivery, or way over-proofed before baking.

Yelp
Java on Ocean is a cute neighborhood coffee shop on the corner. The ambiance is community-oriented with plenty of small tables to chat with friends or work on your laptop for a bit. The mocha blend drink was delicious. Will definitely come back when I'm in the area!

Suki L.

Yelp
The most variety of food I have ever seen for a cafe, which I love! Drinks are expensive though. I noticed some negative comments about their service but honestly I think they're just trying their best to handle busy mornings.

Javi R.

Yelp
Do not recommend this place. Just drank probably the worst latte in my life. Sour espresso way too sweet just not good at all. He charged me $30 for 2 lattes and 2 pastries which is ridiculous for the service and quality I received. His attitude was terrible. He didn't smile ask me how I was or anything. Just wanted to get my order done so bad that he didn't care how he treated me. Mind you it was not even busy. Either way never going back here #whatthehelly

Yelp
Got the bagel as recommended and it was delicious! one morning i got asiago bagel with cream cheese, another day i got the new garden bagel toast. so yummy and the guy making it was so kind and really knows what he's doing. Also there's a new friend by the window. A beautiful little birdie.

Yelp
Have always wanted to try this coffee shop on Ocean! Great vibe and lots of seating, loved the ambiance. The drinks were a little pricey, especially for the Ingleside area, but the smoothie and coffee were delicious. The workers were nice and friendly too.

Yelp
I started going here more often recently. The thing I like most is that the standard coffee shop foods, like the egg and cheese breakfast bagel, are nicely seasoned. The lox bagel is great. I love the sandwiches. On top of that, it's stroller friendly, they play good chill music, and there are a lot of local regulars. I still prefer Philz down the street for the taste of a coffee drink, but everything else about Java on Ocean is better. Edit: I see some comments about the service but to me it seems like the staff are just hustling and being as friendly as they can.

Yelp
This spacious coffee shop did the trick! Double espresso? Why not serve me a quad in a tall glass?! It's my lucky day!! The servers were friendly and the music was very chill. Gotta love espresso and a comfy seat on a cool rainy day! Life is great with espresso! Thanks Christina for your great service and espresso!

Yelp
I'm not in this neighborhood a lot but when I am I always like to come here, usually if I'm hiking at nearby Mt. Davidson. I love the chocolate cream cheese muffins and the rose lattes. Java on Ocean (not affiliated with the other Javas at the Beach and Zoo) is very homey and cozy with lots of seating. Since it has windows on two sides of the store when it's sunny out it's lit up very well which is good for people that don't like dark coffeeshops. It's also good place for studying as it's nearby SFCC, I usually see a lot of students here.
google avatar

Ry T.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood cafe frequented by locals in the area. Large menu of coffee and lattes including specials such as lavender oatmilk latte. Hubby tried a large mocha $7.75 and I got a mocha chai tea, $6. The chai spices quite strong. Initially the mocha had a chalky taste and after a few swallows, you get used to the chai taste. Still, I'd probably try something else next time. Hubby thought his mocha was too sweet and he orders mocha's everywhere we stop for coffee.

Yelp
Hassam and Christina have great customer service. My drink was filled to the brim, which I really appreciate! My latte was so good, it wasn't too bitter or too sweet. Hassam told me and my friends he made our food with love, and there were hearts and smiley faces on our food packaging. He's literally so sweet and talks to every customer as individuals. Please come try Java on Ocean. There are live plants all over the cafe, plenty of seating, and nice music playing that's not too loud. It's a great place to have breakfast with friends or to do homework, and Hassam makes the vibes feel very welcoming and comfortable :)

Abinav R.

Yelp
Awesome coffee and wonderful staff that is very welcoming. They also remember my drinks and ask me if I want the "usual". After several times of ordering the same thing they even asked if I'd like to try something different but still similar to my usual. My kiddo also loves this place and they always greet him and make him very special. Great spot for a family and community feel, excellent coffee and food!

Yelp
I have never met such a rude person. The owner or older gentleman working behind the counter was so rude. I will never come back. Awful experience. After reading other reviews, I guess this is a common thing. For him to be rude to customers. He was rude to my entire family. In response to the owner response. - he was rude right out the gate. From the initial taking of the order to every word that came out after. It's not about "what we're used to" elsewhere. And it's not even about customer service. It's about simple human respect. He acted as if everyone there and everything said was such a burden to him. He belittled us and used his words to put us down as if we are stupid and he could not be bothered.
google avatar

Serra G.

Yelp
This place is so adorable, and most importantly its welcoming and spacious. I was looking for a good cafe as I live in Portola, and this place is it. Turmeric Chai is fire! $8.50 for a Large with Almond Milk. Perfect view to study and people watch. Plentiful parking in the neighborhood.

Jessica G.

Yelp
The staff is rude. I ordered a iced hazelnut latte with an egg & cheese bagel. There was a girl and man working there. They kept calling out the latte and I figured it was mine when I asked the girl if this was my hazelnut latte she said rudely " no one even ordered hazelnut" so I kept waiting. But finally I just got up and got it because I knew it was mine and yes it was a hazelnut latte. The man was calling out my egg and cheese bagel and when I go to get it he snatched the plate and said " this isn't yours" very rudely it made me uncomfortable. I kept waiting and watching him call out my exact order. I finally just went and told him I ordered that and he handed it to me with attitude. I won't be coming back here anymore, which sucks bc I did like this place but they made me feel super uncomfortable):. It was the two people working sat am the girl with glasses and the man who was making the food.

Selah M.

Yelp
My new go-to study spot. The ambiance is very aesthetically pleasing and convenient--plants, music, free WiFi, and charging outlets. My usual is a sweet iced chai with oat milk--so good! Their bagels and sandwiches are super delicious as well. Hossam is a very kind soul and his story is inspirational. Overall, really delicious food and drinks, I'll definitely be coming back as a regular

Yelp
I hate leaving bad reviews but I had to speak about the terrible customer service I have received from Christina at this cafe. Ordered an "iced rose latte" and was asked if I wanted 16oz or 20oz which I replied "16oz" and that was it for the interaction when ordering. I was charged $8.25. I went back to my table and thought to myself, wow the drinks here are expensive. I looked at my receipt and saw that they charged $6.75 for the rose latte, $0.75 more for iced drinks, and $0.75 for oat milk. I was confused as to why there was extra change for oat milk since they never asked if I wanted normal milk or wanted to switch to an alternative. I sat around contemplating on if I wanted to ask the staff who took my order about the oat milk charge. I then heard her ask the next customers the question "is whole milk okay with the drink or do you want an alternative?" I thought back and realized she never asked me that question so I decided to go up and ask about my order. I gave them the benefit of doubt and thought it must of been a mistake but the response I received was appalling. Went up to the register and asked nicely if the rose latte automatically comes with oat milk since I never mentioned oat milk but it was added to my receipt. The staff, Christina, said to me "No, it is a modification to the drink so that would have to be added on to the rose latte price. I repeated the order to you so it's not my fault." Right off the bat, Christina is denying that it was her fault and basically putting the blame on me. I told her I never mentioned oat milk when ordering and once again she goes "well you must not have heard me because I repeated your order and you said yes so this is not my fault." Hearing this was so frustrating so I asked if she must have misheard my order. She then responds with "well I didn't do anything wrong, so what do you want me to do?" She made me give the drink with oat milk back to her and recharged me for another rose latte with whole milk. She rung up the new drink but never mentioned refunding me the first drink so I asked why she didn't refund me first before recharging me for the second drink. She then asked for the receipt of first drink to refund me but this made me wonder if she was planning on refunding me at all or did she just want to charge me a second drink?? I think enough is said about the interaction to interpret that customer service is lacking in this cafe and the staff's attitude is just plain rude. As a customer that loves supporting small businesses, this experience was just too upsetting. I have worked in the food industry for many years and this is not how you treat a customer. I will not be coming back ever and would not recommend anyone to visit here unless they want to be treated with terrible service.

Yelp
If you're sauntering on Ocean Avenue in Ingleside, chances are pretty good that you'll saunter here. It has that casual vibe that attracts a litany of laptoppers each one securely positioned at individual cafe tables. Fortunately there was one vacant table with my name on it. I meant that metaphorically as I didn't take a switchblade and actually etched my name on the tabletop. I was just lucky it was still empty when I got my $3.50 Iced Coffee (photo: https://bit.ly/3iqjoER). I nursed that puppy as I heard the a concerto of clickety-clacks on those keyboards. COFFEE - 3 stars...fitful satisfaction AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...casual space targeted to the laptoppers SERVICE - 3 stars...no special treatment here TOTAL - 3 stars...doing the Java jive in Ingleside RELATED - Sipping coffee in San Francisco? Yelp
I came here on my lunch break and got a veggie falafel wrap, it hella fire. Definitely 10/10, if I lived in SF I'd go again. The staff were super chill and funny, the vibes were good.

Yelp
Great coffee and excellent breakfast and lunch sandwiches as well as smoothies! Mix of clientele between students and locals! Great selection of muffins and other goodies!

Yelp
The ambiance was very nice it gave a cozy buzzy feeling, it's what's keeping this review at a 2 rather than a 1 star review. When I first went up to the register to order the lady asked what I'd like and I asked for an "iced chai latte with oat milk", she then asked if I wanted a sweet or spicy chai latte to which I asked for a blend of both. She then asked if I wanted to regular milk to which I repeat "oat milk". Later when my order was called I went up and saw it in a hot cup, and so I ask and say if maybe it's iced in the hot cup. The lady who was offering me the drink is the same one who took my order, she looks at me almost annoyed. Then this man, maybe a manager/owner, comes out asking me if I asked for iced, I said yes, then proceeds to say "90% of customers forget to say iced" and although he did reassure me that he's not implying I forgot it was the way he came out of nowhere asking me if I asked for iced so abruptly rather than asking what happened. It was almost like an interrogation question. At the end of the interaction the lady took the hot cup back and poured it in a cold cup with ice in it, i ended up with a lukewarm drink. My friend then ordered a pastry, iced matcha latte, and a bagel. Now I'm not sure about the food since I didn't order anything and he didn't seem excited enough to share, but when he heard an order be called and he looks around to see if it's his the man that I spoke to earlier waves him over loudly, and what sounded to be in an annoyed tone, saying his COFFEE is ready... Not only was he given a coffee but he also received it hot. I feel like there's definitely room for improving the way staff converse and interact with customers, and there's most definitely a need for improving how they take orders.

Yelp
Today's experience put a bad taste in my mouth. I like coming here to support the local businesses but tonight I was treated pretty rudely. I came in 5 min before 5pm on a Tuesday. I was in the area and decided to come here on a whim. I was helped by two older men, both with glasses, one with a beanie and the other without. I walked up to the register and the one with a beanie asked what I would like. I told him what sandwich I wanted and to get 2 of them. Instantly he replied, "Next time you need to call us ahead to make food because we have things to do. We are closing soon. It would have been easier on us if you had called ahead of time". I was shocked because I've come here at different times of the day and no one has ever said that to me before. I've come at 5pm before and never had I had someone mention that. I just replied, "Oh okay I didn't know that". I was hesitant in continuing the order but decided this might just be the last time I come here since apparently making sandwiches is a hassle. The other man finished the transaction as the one with a beanie made the sandwiches. After he called out my order, I asked him when did they start implementing this rule and what time did they close. He replied that because of the pandemic, they do not have many items and it would be easier to make the sandwich ahead of time. They still had one hour left until closing (closes 6pm). Before the pandemic, they closed at 9pm. I replied that I've come here around this same time recently in the pandemic and he wasn't here and the other people never mentioned that to me. He recognized that we have talked before and he tried to retract what he said --that either way, walk-in or by phone for food is okay at anytime for me. He tried explaining that "it's just much harder" for him that he had to make the sandwiches. I found this incredibly rude because --where does it state that the kitchen closes an hour before? I've worked at Starbucks and have never told anyone that came in as a walk-in to order by mobile to "make things easier for me", no matter how busy or slow it was. Not even during the last hour before closing, heck not even 5 min before! I understand if I had came in 1min before closing but I came in 65 min before closing. If there was a sign that stated to order food by calling, no walk-ins at a certain time--alright, but there was no sign. There were only a few people in the lobby too. To management--add a sign so that people will know that walk-ins for food are not welcomed, "Call-in orders only" to "make it easier" for the workers.

Yelp
They served the hot beverages with real mugs. Mine had a line crack near the rim of the top of the ceramic mug. The matcha latte was made just right with 40% sweet.

Here getting my Mocha blend and Cheese danish on today. I am a disabled person and these folks even when they're busy they always kindly bring my order to me. I know they don't have to but I always appreciate it. So, make sure you all tip

Yelp
Such a cute cafe! Some of the best chai in the city. Come around 10 for a shorter line.

Yelp
Excellent white Mocha. I've had a string of bad mochas in the city but this one tasted right. It took less than 2 minutes to get my drink. The interior is really calming and inviting many plants throughout. My new favorite spot in the west side of the city.

Yelp
I tried the new avocado sundried toast and OMG SO TASTY!! It was the perfect mid morning snack before a late lunch. Light but filling and all of the ingredients were super fresh. I don't normally like sprouts but the whole thing with sprouts and cucumbers are to die for! Def check it out.
