Lesson learned: seafood in landlocked cities can be amazing!
4.5 stars and rounded up.
Notable highlights: Terrific friendly service, delicious fresh seafood, great drink signature options, open late on weekends!
Came to meet up with friends late-ish around 9:45 on a Saturday night in June. Due to covid they had an outdoor canopied seating area in the middle of the street (like many restaurants in the area) that they were trying to clear out tables for the evening, but the couple tables directly outside their storefront as well as seats inside the restaurant were still available. We sat here and the staff came up quickly with menus and friendly greetings.
We ordered the Hook $55 one of the cold raw platters with 1/2 lb peel n eat shrimp, 6 oysters and 1/2 lb snow crab legs, fried town dock calamari $12, 1/2 dozen chargrilled oysters $22, a bowl of crawfish and andouille sausage gumbo $7, a side of pork belly collards $5, and a few drinks--a Jax G&T $12, a grapefruit honey tonic mocktail $6, and a off-dry Apple cider from Stem Ciders $6. For three people this second dinner around 10:15pm was probably a bit overboard but hey, it was second dinner ;)
I would recommend every item except the chargrilled oysters--the flavor was ok, but one of the oysters had some pieces of shell in it which wasn't edible. Everything else was hand-down terrific! The calamari was plentiful and wonderfully tender and bouncy in texture, the seafood platter was fresh and the shrimp wonderful seasoned with spices, and I loved the vinegar and horseradish sauce that accompanied the oysters. The collards and gumbo could have been a meal for one person by themselves, both tasty and with a Cajun twang. The G&T and mocktail were well-mixed and balanced.
The friendly and knowledgeable staff were easy to interact with, and checked in often. What a treat!
