18 Places to Eat and Drink in Old Town Fort Collins | Eater Denver

"With some of the town’s best chefs working here, this Boulder-based restaurant group has a flavor all its own in Fort Collins. Go for the classic shrimp and grits, some umami-filled spring onion dashi, or any of those chefs’ seasonal specials." - Josie Sexton

What a perfect evening. Fresh seafood, kind and attentive staff, excellent drinks and great atmosphere. They oysters were divine. Loved being able to learn about what we were choosing and the waiter was very knowledgeable. We also got the shrimp appetizer which was so good! We had a really nice evening and I will absolutely be back! Worth the splurge!

Been in many times with my fiance. We like to come in right as they open and take advantage of the happy hour. All night happy hour on Tuesdays is a plus! Food is always fresh and delicious. Drinks are also very refreshing. I love getting the peel and eat shrimp, fiance loves the oysters and calamari, and we share a nice steamy plate of mussels. 😋 Always a great time!

Google
Incredible food and service! One of the best dining experiences I've had. Staff is so so friendly and highly attentive to anything you need. The oysters and caviar are so fresh and clean. Entrees are prepared with craftsmanship, love, and care by the chefs. A rare gem of a restaurant. Highly recommend.

I recently took my mom here for her Birthday dinner. They treated her like a Queen! They made a special happy birthday note on the table waiting for us to arrive! The food is AMAZING! We are originally from NJ, so we know and love fresh and good seafood!! Jax instantly became one of our favorite seafood restaurants (even making it on the top of our list from high end seafood establishments in NJ.) Couldn’t recommend this restaurant more! The service was outstanding and the food is just, perfection. Best calamari I’ve we’ve had and the seafood chowder is to die for!! A must go to place! We travel from Wyoming to eat here and would even travel further! 15/10 stars.

Google
This place was delicious! We came in with a reservation (you should make one, by the way), and we sat at the bar. The hostess was kind enough to find us a table when one was available, very nice of her! Drinks were delicious, and appetizers were great on happy hour. The food was great! It is a little spendy but with sea food you get what you pay for😁 Staff was great, overall great experience, not a weekly visit place we could afford but will be back.

Google
Happy hour every day from 3:30 to 6. Tuesday happy hour is all night. They have East Coast oysters for two dollars and West Coast for three. They also have peel and eat shrimp on the happy hour menu, mussels (but only in a white wine sauce so we ordered off of the regular menu), a fish sandwich, and a variety of other things. The apple and Gruyère salad was *delicious* although we were initially surprised there were no greens! They were a bit behind on the oysters, so we waited awhile. The only qualm I had was that there were quite a bit of shell pieces in the oysters, probably because of the rushed shucking job. The bartenders were very friendly, and made great drinks (the oyster shooter is yummy!). For football fans out there, they had the game playing at the bar.

The food was very well prepared. The service was spot on. The waiter was friendly and attentive. The seating is a bit tight, but overall A+.

Google
My wife and I had dinner here for our 11th anniversary - just completely pleased. Our waiter, Levi, knew the entire menu A to Z and was able to help my wife make some simple subs to avoid issues with her gluten allergy. The man is a saint. The drinks and food were so good (especially the risotto) that my only gripe is I ran out of space.

Yelp
I had a fantastic experience at this seafood spot! Came here to celebrate my birthday. So freaking happy I did. First off, the happy hour prices are unbeatable--a great way to sample a bunch of dishes without breaking the bank. The raw oysters were a highlight--both East Coast and West Coast varieties were super fresh and tasty, though I personally preferred the West Coast for their brinier, creamier flavor. If you're an oyster fan, don't miss the charbroiled oysters--they're rich, smoky, and absolutely delicious. The mussels were outstanding--plump, buttery, and served in a sauce so good I was tempted to drink it. Huge thanks to Alfredo for the extra bread, which was perfect for soaking it all up. The calamari was just okay texture-wise, but the sauce it came with completely stole the show--bursting with flavor and spice. Definitely worth ordering just for that. Whatever you do, don't skip the crab rangoons. They're crispy, generously filled, and full of flavor--probably some of the best I've had. The 1/4 peel-and-eat shrimp were a bit too salty for my taste, but if you're into bold seasoning, you might enjoy them. Overall, this place nails the seafood classics and serves them up with great service and unbeatable happy hour deals. I'll definitely be back! The staff is fantastic. The place is very on theme. If you come for happy hour please take a seat at the bar. The vibe is top.

Yelp
Awesome oysters, great selection! fantastic service from Tamina, Alfredo, Chris, and Magnum, not to mention all of the amazing Shuckers as well! Great happy hour all night on Tuesday one of my Fort Collins favorites!!

Yelp
Drove up to my Alma mater today just to see how things are now. Walked down college avenue and thought fish sounds good and I haven't had any oysters in a while. My Fish could have been grilled a bit longer and black beans were a little undercooked for my liking, but the flavor was still complimentary Our server Levi K was very attentive Music and the bar area was a pretty loud.
google avatar

Brent B.

Yelp
Great place when you want a nice dinner to celebrate something. Everything tasted fresh, and there was a lot of variety in the menu. A little saucey, and I wish they had more local inspiration for their menu, though.

Yelp
We had a most excellent dinner at Jax last week. The service was friendly and excellent, the food delicious, and the environment casual and not haughty. For starters, we enjoyed fresh oysters from the Pacific Northwest, and the Lobster Deviled Eggs (the deviled eggs desperately needed salt but that was an easy thing for us to do). My wife had the Herb Seared New England Sea Scallops with mushroom risotto and I asked the server to pick for me as I couldn't decide what I wanted. I was pleasantly surprised with the Crab Crusted Hawaiian Ono with succotash, housemade hush puppy and roasted poblano crema. With our mains we had the Bacon Fat Cornbread and Pork Belly Collards. Delicious! Our cocktails were very good as well. We will definitely be back the next time we pass through Fort Collins.

Yelp
Tried out Jax's the other day. Wonderful seafood. The oysters were fresh and delicious as were our other dishes. From the salmon to the salads to the entrees everything was great. If you want sea food in Fort Collins you have to try Jax's.

Yelp
Was late getting around to dinner with a friend and walked into Jax randomly, to find it's definitely one of my new favorite places to get fresh oysters and amazing food! Started my dinner with two lobster deviled eggs! If you are deviled egg connoisseur like myself, I will always try them when I can find them! Perfect hard egg white, a light whipped egg yolk that mesh's very well with the lobster chunk topping it all! I ate them faster than I should have, would definitely recommend! Main course was the Lobster Roll with garlic fries. I honestly have no idea how to describe the flavor, consistency and satisfaction every bite of the roll was except, perfection. I love a warm bite of lobster, however the chilled lobster pieces brought a refreshing and delicate profile to the palate and again.. was gone almost as fast as my deviled egg appetizer! Definitely get a side of butter, because I was not expecting clarified butter, and my lord was it a warm exquisite profile change that could never be outdone.. I will be back for this! The garlic fries were simple, airy and not over taken by the garlic! Along with my lobster roll I ordered a few oysters, mine were specifically fresh from WA and they reminded me of home! Oysters were one of my favorite things to eat fresh when I lived in WA and I missed the flavor profile and joy these bring. A little dabble of cocktail sauce, hot sauce or their pickled oil.. I'll be back for more of these alone! They do rotate out sources so be aware you might not get the same ones twice! Would definitely recommend for a lobster roll, but looking at their menu, I can't personally wait to try more of their menu!

Yelp
Wow!!! The best meal we've had out in a long time. We found this place on Yelp and a fantastic find. They fly in fresh seafood every day. Not a fan of oysters but they supposedly have them fresh. Peal and eat shrimp perfectly prepared, presented and full of seasoning. The best prepared blackened catfish I'd had. Salmon perfectly cooked to medium great flavor and moist. Great service. Great location I'm downtown Ft Collins with outdoor seating. I great place and I'd come back for sure. Oh and the dessert was amazing. Brulé'd Key Lime Tart worth coning for
google avatar

Yelp
Was delicious, best calamari I have had in a long time! I went during Happy hour so prices were reasonable.

Yelp
Jax Fish House was super busy on a Friday. There was a wait. My attention span is as short as a Jack Russels so I was tempted to move on to the next as trendy restaurants are ubiquitous on College Ave, but the food I saw on customers plates looked so good so I waited it out. I ordered a lobster roll and swapped fries for broccolini. The lobster roll was tiny. .2lb of lobster meat maybe? I didn't see any noticeable chunks of claw of tail disappointingly. It almost looked ground. I enjoyed it though but I'd probably get something else if I ever come back.

Yelp
Matt took great care of us during our anniversary dining and was quite helpful and kind. A table was setup and prepared for us as we arrived. I ordered a half dozen happy-hour oysters - they quickly disappeared behind a content smile. For our main course, my wife enjoyed her rare-cooked Tuna, asparagus and fingerling potatoes - humming often throughout the meal. My Hawaiian Ono steak with succotash and hushpuppy mixed together on my fork quite yummly. For special occasions we always try to end up at Jax for the evening meal. The menu is complete, well thought out and pertinent to the season. The interior vibe draws you into a friendly atmosphere, and the staff is always attentive and in control of the table. The lovely and expertly prepared dishes of fresh fish, oysters, scallops, shrimp plates, and bar keep us coming back.

Yelp
Hard pass. No need to mess up a classic such as a shrimp cocktail! Keep it the way it's been for since the turn of time. Oysters were eh.

Yelp
Being in landlocked Colorado, sometimes it's hard to find delicious, and trustworthy, seafood. Once Fish changed into Bistro Nautile, Jax became my sole spot for fresh seafood. I've never been one to like calamari - most places it comes out rubbery and overcooked, but Jax cooks theirs so on point that it's always the first thing I order. The calamari is lightly battered and fried, tender and perfectly seasoned, and comes with a sweet mango-chile mojo and lime aioli that compliments it wonderfully! Since we're always there for happy hour, we tend to get a huge selection off that menu - the gumbo with a thick slice of bacon fat cornbread is a MUST! I could literally just eat that cornbread as my entire meal and be happy! The gumbo is thick and made with a dark roux, and full of generous amounts of shrimp and andouille sausage. They seem to have taken the salads off of the happy hour menu, but those are crisp and delicious as well. Once in a while we'll opt for the oysters of the day and chug a few of those, and maybe throw in an oyster shooter as well, to go along with the delicious mixed drinks they offer - try the Cucumber Lemon Press for one of the most refreshing beverages you'll get to experience! I have yet to actually order an entree from Jax - the happy hour menu is just too good, and too filling!

Yelp
Siani took great care of us tonight for our first time in. We had 2 types of oysters that were AMAZING, gumbo with a perfect roux, wedge salad which was great and the main dish of lobster cacio de pepe. The pasta was absolutely delicious and we finished it off with banana pudding. The happy hour menu had great options and it made our short trip to Colorado start off right!

Lisa R.

Yelp
A fantastic place to enjoy dinner. Great vibe, excellent service and delicious food. We'll be back again soon!

Yelp
My favorite for happy hour in Foco! Our go-to choices include raw oysters with their housemade cocktail sauce, calamari with lime aioli and mango chili mojo and mussels in chardonnay butter broth with grilled sourdough. The seafood is always cooked to perfection and they have wonderful wine selections to pair with it. The caesar and wedge salads are delicious as well. The team is always friendly and hard-working and the atmosphere is classy but fun! It is wise to make a reservation if you can.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Love to go here for happy hour. Great selection. Service is usually good. It can get loud but that's hard to control. Don't miss the corn bread, it's incredible.

Paul B.

Yelp
We pretty much only go for happy hour and it is solid. Good bar service and nice people.
google avatar

Yelp
One of our favorite date night go-to's! Great service, excellent food, wonderful lively ambiance, all food made fresh and in house, so almost every item can be made GF which is a huge plus as a Celiac patient. THEY EVEN HAVE A DESIGNATED FRYER!!!! The fish and oysters are always fresh, but to be able to have delicious calamari and french fries is a dream come true! The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. We love to sit at the bar and interact with the servers. HIGHLY recommend Jax to anyone!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in on a whim on a Tuesday night. The place was packed and our only option was to sit at the bar. **AWESOME** experience. The servers behind the bar made an awesome team and helped with food recommendations when we were undecided. Their choices were spot on!! My daughter ordered the mussels and they were cooked perfectly. When she was done, the server offered her toast to sop up the delicious broth that was left behind. She said it was amazing. I had the shrimp trofie (a type of pasta). The dish looked small, but the pasta was dense and I had leftovers!! The flavors were incredible and the shrimp was huge. I'd DEFINITELY order it again. Our servers saw that we were intrigued by their preparation of oysters on the half shell and peel and eat shrimp. They went so far as to make us a mini shrimp plate (pictured) so we could try them. It was such a kind and unexpected gesture! We finished our meal with the flourless chocolate torte. Warning -- it's rich... and delicious! I didn't love the texture of the crust, but could easily overlook it because the mousse was so tasty. Jax is small and intimate, but it's decorated well and has a great vibe. It's a winner!

Yelp
Great oysters, martinis and service. Best happy hour around. Always a happy place. The only bad thing is that I can't get there more often.

Yelp
I will admit that I am not the best person to review Jax Fish House as I am a vegetarian so clearly not their target demographic. Nevertheless, I tried out everything vegetarian on their menu. First, in regards to my food, I had the cauliflower risotto, fries, and charred Chinese broccoli. The risotto was very good and filling as were the fries. The broccoli was all right but a bit too salty for my personal liking especially with the charred nature of the vegetable. As for the others at my table, they seemed very happy with their various seafood selections so I can only presume that Jax delivers on this level. Where I will say Jax is a bit odd is its atmosphere given its price point and, again, that depends on each patron's expectations. Jax battles with not being a particularly large establishment and so, with its popularity, there's definitely a tightness in their bar area on a Friday night that can be uncomfortable. We still had made a reservation and so were seated and, while we personally enjoyed the option of crayons to then draw on the paper placed on the table, while this may seem appealing for people like myself or families, it may not be to those expecting a romantic evening. Additionally, at this price point, I don't necessarily care to have TVs on or music at a louder level playing. This is where the feel of Jax as a sports bar is too close to the feel of Jax as a restaurant and so there's a certain unevenness there in experience because of its size. Our server was fantastic and the food ultimately good, but it's the prices in connection with the atmosphere that are odd to me about this location and so I'd put it more in a 3.5-4 star review personally.

Talega M.

Yelp
Excellent food! Great service. Took my husband here for his birthday and they made the experience amazing for him! Coming from Laguna Beach - As a foodie I have only found 2 places that are what I consider worth going to here in Fort Collins and Jax is #1 on my list!
google avatar

Steven A.

Yelp
Great food atmosphere wait staff Great selection Seafood, must have not been season for whole lobster But still many great choices. Nice place to take someone special for a birthday!
google avatar

Diane S.

Yelp
The food here is always good. But they are overpriced for the amount you get. Service feels hit or miss. We've had top notch experiences and so-so on other occasions.

OnTheO S.

Yelp
We had a great dinner at Jax last night. It has a fun vibe and seems priced about right for similar food experiences. We had the crab dip, wedge salad, oysters, peel n eat shrimp, snow crab, dungeness crab, and key lime crème brûlée. Get that dessert - it's worth it. But It was all excellent and the service was amazing. We made a reservation and they sat us immediately, even on a Friday night. They served us hot towels before dessert which was nice to clean the crab juice from our hands and faces haha. My only suggestions if a manager reads this: a few more wontons for the crab dip would've been nice and cold/frozen plates for the wedge salad. But you all do a great job and we'll be back.
google avatar

Maysen M.

Yelp
This walk in bar and restaurant is one of the best seafood places on the down town college area. The peel and eat shrimp is amazing and never fails to leave me with messy fingers and a happy belly. The staff is super professional and kind, just wish people could help not leave the tables so messy for them when they leave. Otherwise, seeing the kitchen work clean and efficient just makes me feel so amazing inside. Absolutely recommend!
google avatar

Baret S.

Yelp
Unfortunately I have to warn people, this place is a mess. Employees are trying hard, but you can tell that ownership doesn't care. Food quality is below par... don't order the wedge salad unless you want a baby size portion. Hope this review helps kick it into gear.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous! From the location to the server to the atmosphere to the food, everything was great! We had raw oysters and chargrilled oysters and then the scallops dish and pasta dish. It was all so tasty. The timing was perfect, the food temps, just all of it! And then the ridiculous cookie place next store? Wonderful night of dining and dessert.
google avatar

Davey H.

Yelp
What really blew me away about this place is that I'm not a huge fan of seafood, especially when I'm not by the ocean and can at least expect a fresh piece of fish - Jax was a truly phenomenal experience. I have been twice and both times was very impressed - incredible food and top-notch service. I highly recommend the calamari, the gumbo, the oysters and whatever fresh fish they are offering. Well done - we will be back many more times in the future.
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
One of my absolute favorite happy hours in town! Amazing drinks and small plates, plus you cannot beat the outdoor seating on a beautiful day! Dress up or dress down, casual is totally okay
google avatar

Emma C.

Yelp
Delicious! Everything is always great. Oysters are a favorite as well as the ahi tuna. Always great service and atmosphere in general too!

Daniel L.

Yelp
Had to stop in Monday for all night Happy Hour and some faboulous scallops! Service was very good and the food even better!

Stan G.

Yelp
Superb! It was a dining experience, not just a meal. The great food prepared with unique recipes makes it worth the price.
google avatar

Kate S.

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Awesome menu. Fresh fish. Creative drinks. Awesome wine list. Try it!

Ben R.

Yelp
$22 for a Grey Goose dirty martini. My wife and I each ordered one, which made it $44. It was possibly the best dinner I've had in Fort Collins. We ordered a bunch of small plates. Fresh peas with mint gremolade; some sort of himachi; several other top small plates. Absolutely delicious. But they made their profit on those two drinks that we ordered that weren't on the menu. And instead of us being monthly customers, they made their profits then. Won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and cocktails for a special birthday dinner for my mother in law. We sat on the patio on college on a beautiful night. We met some friends who walked by our table. A great outdoor vibe. The food was delicious with reasonable portions despite elevated prices. This is my 2nd favorite seafood restaurant in northern Colorado. The specialty cocktails are really good here. The lobster Mac n cheese is not to be missed and can be ordered as a large side dish to be shared. We shared a dessert. Unlike many other places, they did not comp the dessert or bring a candle despite our telling them the occasion was for a birthday. Pro tip: This place is usually very crowded and hard to get a table last minute. So plan ahead and make a reservation.
google avatar

Ruth T.

Yelp
Best seafood experience ever! We ordered a big variety of appetizers and couldn't help but finish every last bite. We also each had a happy hour mixed drink, a lemon something, and that was excellent as well. From now on Jax is a must every time I visit the Denver area, as long as my funds can support it. The meal was very pricey but worth it to me.

Chris R.

Yelp
Great vibe and great oysters! You need a reservation. Cool bar area. Boiled shrim was small though.
google avatar

Rachael R.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience we had at Jax! The service was extremely accommodating and professional, the food was delicious, and the cocktails were artfully made. Not to mention the happy hour specials are choice! I can't wait to go back. I've been jonesing for hush puppies since my boyfriend got back from North Carolina and had the audacity not to bring any home for me. Turns out Jax has hush puppies on their happy hour menu, along with some killer cocktails. I got the cucumber lemon press cocktail, which was refreshing and sweet with a little tartness. Perfect for a summer afternoon in Old Town! The hush puppies were also delicious--savory with a slight sweetness and deep fried to perfection. I look forward to returning to Jax for a full dinner sometime soon!

Judith S.

Yelp
As usual, their food doesn't disappoint. We usually have oysters and a couple of other things. One of the new items this time was the gumbo. It is deliciously spicy. We come here often and always love the food but i wanted to give a shout out to the servers today. They were amazing. We were seated by the kitchen in a table that had been split in two by a divider. That was extremely uncomfortable. We were practically sharing a table w another party. The kitchen lights were also very hot. Our party included tall people and it wasn't great. I think management needs to get rid of that set up. I requested a table switch. I know what a pain that is but the servers were quick to accommodate us during a very busy time. Once moved we had a wonderful dinner. Regan R was our server and deserves all the gold stars. Every server we had an interaction w was just stellar. Great job all!

K D.

Yelp
Love this place I go frequently for Oyster Happy Hour. The drinks are good and the seafood is very fresh. I was skeptical of seafood so far from an ocean but Jax has proven to be a gem.
google avatar

Timothy D.

Yelp
Great meeting place with friends for happy hour or dinner. Friendly bar and wait staff.
google avatar

Savhana G.

Yelp
We had a team dinner here and the food was phenomenal. Luckily we got the chance to try most of the appetizers and they did not disappoint. The entrees were delicious with great portion sizes. We also tried all of the desserts and they were to die for! I couldn't even finish my chocolate cake, it was so rich but delicious. We initially made our reservation for 8 but ended up being 12 people. Thank you for accommodating and thank you for the great service!
google avatar

Brittany H.

Yelp
Great food and great service! I love when I enter a restaurant and the energy is high and it feels like the staff is happy to see you!

Deb R.

Yelp
I just love this place! We come here whenever we want oysters. I've never had a bad meal here. Their food is creative and just delicious. Service is always great, and the atmosphere is pleasant. If you go on Friday or Saturday you should make a reservation, it's hard to get in! We really like sitting at the bar though.
google avatar

Husky D.

Yelp
The place has ok food and prices can be high, but maybe this husky spoiled after eating on the West Coast getting fresh Pacific Ocean food.

Kent F.

Yelp
The Crab legs were soooo good. The service was top notch. They went the extra mile for my mom's birthday

Yelp
Went out last night to find take out somewhere and saw this heated tent. We had never dined here before and definitely weren't dressed for it, but thought what the heck. And so glad we did. What incredible staff....I mean absolutely everyone. We were seated and within seconds we had a heater placed nest to us and shortly their after, we were toasty. We started with Manhattans and calamari ....so good! The mango-chile mojo, lime aioli sauce amazing. I ordered the lobster roll BLT. It's big claw & tail meat, remoulade, pepper bacon, butter toasted split-top roll with fries and my partner ordered the Jumbo lump crab cake with farm vegetable fried rice. Both orders came with the fried rice...I mentioned I wanted the fries. They came almost immediately and they left the fried rice. OMG...so glad they did. I loved it. The rice is a must order. So my roll was incredible and the crab cake was fantastic. Not a lot of filler, so very meaty. They have a fantastic to go packages, and a Manhattan special to go....we're so down for that. Highly highly recommend
