Jaya House Angkor Park

"Set the sceneBlink and you’d whizz straight past the whitewashed buildings set a little way back from the puttering tuk-tuks and horn toots of Siem Reap’s Street 30, a 10-minute drive from Angkor’s splendid temples. Two metal doors with cut-out palm frond patterns set inside a squared-off stone archway swing open to reveal a Buddha statue holding court over a paved pathway, which leads to this unexpected boutique hotel in a petite, manicured garden. Pleasingly, it’s a little less in the thick of things than the likes of grande dame Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor and Amansara on rue Charles de Gaulle. What’s the backstory? This is the second boutique hotel from the team behind Cambodia’s first plastic-free property, Jaya House River Park. Managing director Christian de Boer, former general manager at Shinta Mani and co-founder of the Refill not Landfill initiative, has once again placed sustainability and community at the heart of this little-sister outpost. The all-Cambodian team (dressed nattily in flint linen get-ups by local couturier Eric Raisina) are chosen for their passion over formal qualifications, then given regular training opportunities. This place is as stylish as it is soulful; Cambodian architect Si Sokvann has transformed an abandoned hotel project into a small-but-wonderful tropical modernist outpost, all clean lines and rustling fan palms, with a high-drama greenhouse restaurant, a spa with a fern-fronted façade, and an eye-catching chrome-tiled swimming pool. What can we expect in our room? There’s a silvery sofa heaped with mint, pearl, and ash-gray cushions, as well as a marshmallow-soft bed set underneath a geometric frosted mirror. Monochrome paintings of inspiring Khmer creatives—from greats such as Sinn Sisamouth (aka "Cambodia’s Elvis") to modern-day chanteuse Laura Mam—are hung on the walls. Striped laundry bags by Rehash Trash (which transforms roadside rubbish into stylish homeware), dappled-pink Buddha statues, and refillable bottles of house-made Jaya Organics toiletries all root you firmly in Cambodia. How about the food and drink? At Deco restaurant there isn’t a dish which we can’t rave about; from smashed avocado and perfectly poached eggs sprinkled with a crunchy pistachio dukkah at breakfast to suppers of traditional Khmer fish curry amok reimagined as a sophisticated mushroom- and chickpea-packed vegan pasta dish. Cocktails—such as raspberry-mint lemonade with a gin, vodka, and elderflower kick—are refreshing and delivered with panache. Chef Bunna Arthireach’s sensational cooking combined with a dramatic glasshouse make Deco is a pull in its own right. What’s the crowd like?Book-smart groups of NGO-worker pals chatting cult novels and art on weekend mini breaks, couples in Dodo Bar Or fringed halter maxi-dresses and Vilebrequin swim shorts, and bohemian families who explore Angkor at dawn and spend afternoons larking around in the pool. Anything to say about the service?Genuine and exacting; the staff takes the time to get to know each guest, meaning their recommendations (say a jaunt to one of Angkor’s lesser-visited temples through the countryside at golden hour, past thatch-topped restaurants and lotus-flower-filled lakes) always feel personal. What’s the neighborhood scene like?Street 30 is ever so slightly away from the main tourist drag, but everywhere you’d want to go is an easy five- to 20-minute tuk-tuk ride away—be it the Angkor National Museum, the world’s most famous temple complex, astonishing acrobatic performances at Phare circus, or the neon-lit bars of Pub Street. Our suggestion: Skip the main drag and sip kombucha Mojitos at Shanghai-sultry speakeasy Miss Wong instead. Anything else to add?In a brilliant, more-hotels-should-do-it touch, laundry and an hour-long daily spa treatment are included in the incredibly reasonable room rate (a foot massage is just the thing after a day’s temple-hopping). Anything you would change?Honestly, we don’t think so. Is it worth it?Absolutely. It's a feel-good hotel through and through, from the light and breezy tropicana decor to the delicious Cambodian fusion food. Plus, a stay genuinely contributes to the community, as profits support four local NGOs. Prepare to wax lyrical to friends when you get home (but don’t tell too many people, otherwise getting a room on a future visit could prove tricky)." - Ianthe Butt

21 Hotels We're Dreaming of Returning To

"I dream of returning to Jaya House River Park in Siem Reap on an almost daily basis, for so many reasons, but above all, for the staff. I'm not exaggerating when I say that every single member of the team, the GM, the bartender, the gardeners, is a delight. So warm, so welcoming, and the kicker is, it's not at all phony or rehearsed. Their attitude is infectious, being there actually makes you a happier, more considerate person, at least for the duration of your stay."

At These Hotels, the Decor Tells a Hidden Story

"When it came time for Jaya House Angkor Park (doubles from $179) in Siem Reap to decorate, the hotel tapped a handful of artists who had trained at the Small Art School (an NGO that provides free classes to local kids) to create portraits of '60s Khmer music legends, highlighting the swinging scene of Cambodia's Golden Era, a period overshadowed by the subsequent Khmer Rouge regime."

Wow! The service excellence is outstanding! One of the best hotels I have gone to ever. Christian the owner and his team work as one unit to make sure all feel comfortable and at home. The hotel has an extremely relax feel with no charge mini bar, free ironing by the staff, free tuk tuk to and from town and a telephone to call the hotel in case of emergencies. Couple with this breakfast each morning. Also there is no pressure to tip or to have lunch or dinner in the hotel. Actually Christian and his team provide tuk tuk for all day/night excursions into town to experience Siem Reap at no extra charge. We spend four days here and we overly happy. Thank you team for the electrolytes after each day’s excursion it really helped to deal with the heat.

Congratulations. If you’re reading this review, you’ve found your hotel for your time in Siem Reap. Honestly. Look no further. The experts at Jaya House will look after every aspect of your stay within and outside the hotel. When we left our previous hotel on the trip, we weren’t sure how it could be beaten but Jaya house takes the cake ! From the moment you set foot in the hotel you are made to feel completely at ease and cared for. I won’t describe all the little things they offer because I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise but the service and attention to detail is second to none. Special mention to Christian, Finn and Chris for leading from the front and all the staff at the bar the restaurant the spa the housekeeping and drivers. We are very grateful for how you looked after us and made our stay incredible.

Jaya House is incredibly a hidden gem. I already heard so many great things about this place but even so the experience here was exceptional. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. All their staff are courteous and always greeting you. The thoughtfulness of offering you a drink when you are waiting in the lobby or sitting by the pool side and also offering a mosquito spray everytime you head out. The whole place smells so good too! The location is near where you want to be - near the temples and a walking distance to the night market. This is now my favorite place in Siem Reap. Highly highly recommended! 😊

Had a wonderful stay! The service was warm and friendly from start to finish, and the rooms were absolutely fabulous: spacious, stylish, and super comfortable. The only slight letdown was the massage, which could be improved. Overall, a great experience and would happily return!

Jaya house is without a doubt the best hotel I have ever stayed in, and that includes renowned hotels around the world. The level of service is phenomenal - all of the staff are across every detail, meaning anyone you speak to is able to help with a tour, arrange a meal, or arrange a tuk tuk. The grounds and pool are wonderful, and the restaurant food is the best we had in Siem reap.||Sadly our trip was cut short due to unforeseen circumstances, but we can’t wait to return.||A special thanks to Anna who was wonderful with our daughter, and Lee our tour guide, who has a vast knowledge of Cambodian history.

This is my first time leaving a review on Google while traveling. I can confidently say that Jaya House is the best hotel I have ever stayed at. The hotel staff constantly thought about how to make guests happy and put their efforts into ensuring every convenience. My first trip to Cambodia almost became the worst memory because, in Phnom Penh, staff at a massage shop swapped seven of my $100 bills for counterfeit ones from my bag. This left me with a terrible impression of Cambodia, and I thought I would never want to return. However, Mr. Christian, the General Manager of Jaya House, completely changed my perception. He arranged for us to receive a blessing from a monk at a nearby pagoda, creating an unforgettable memory. Additionally, he provided a translator to escort us to the police station when we reported the incident. Even though Christian is not Cambodian, his love for Cambodia was evident. When we returned late from the police station and hadn’t had a chance to eat, he even prepared Korean ramen in our room. And today, as we had a late-night flight and weren’t sure where to spend time after checkout, the hotel kindly provided us with a hospitality room to use until we left for the airport. I have stayed at luxury resorts like Aman, Hyatt, and Six Senses, but I have never experienced such exceptional hospitality in my life. This is truly the best hotel, and because of Jaya House, I now want to visit Cambodia again.

The hotel offers an exceptional experience that is truly elevated by its outstanding personnel. Their hospitality and meticulous attention to detail are unparalleled. From the refreshing cold scented towels and assistance with bug repellant to their professional demeanor and genuine warmth, every interaction contributed to a flawless stay. Additional amenities such as the rejuvenating massages, complimentary laundry service, and free tuk tuk rides to town ensured a seamless and relaxing visit. The property itself is a haven of beauty, boasting impeccably maintained rooms, stunning pools, and meticulously landscaped surroundings. The delightful aroma of fresh lemongrass further enhanced the sensory experience. This establishment stands as an unparalleled choice for accommodation in Siem Reap, and I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to return in the future.
