Jaya House Angkor Park

"Set the sceneBlink and you’d whizz straight past the whitewashed buildings set a little way back from the puttering tuk-tuks and horn toots of Siem Reap’s Street 30, a 10-minute drive from Angkor’s splendid temples. Two metal doors with cut-out palm frond patterns set inside a squared-off stone archway swing open to reveal a Buddha statue holding court over a paved pathway, which leads to this unexpected boutique hotel in a petite, manicured garden. Pleasingly, it’s a little less in the thick of things than the likes of grande dame Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor and Amansara on rue Charles de Gaulle. What’s the backstory? This is the second boutique hotel from the team behind Cambodia’s first plastic-free property, Jaya House River Park. Managing director Christian de Boer, former general manager at Shinta Mani and co-founder of the Refill not Landfill initiative, has once again placed sustainability and community at the heart of this little-sister outpost. The all-Cambodian team (dressed nattily in flint linen get-ups by local couturier Eric Raisina) are chosen for their passion over formal qualifications, then given regular training opportunities. This place is as stylish as it is soulful; Cambodian architect Si Sokvann has transformed an abandoned hotel project into a small-but-wonderful tropical modernist outpost, all clean lines and rustling fan palms, with a high-drama greenhouse restaurant, a spa with a fern-fronted façade, and an eye-catching chrome-tiled swimming pool. What can we expect in our room? There’s a silvery sofa heaped with mint, pearl, and ash-gray cushions, as well as a marshmallow-soft bed set underneath a geometric frosted mirror. Monochrome paintings of inspiring Khmer creatives—from greats such as Sinn Sisamouth (aka "Cambodia’s Elvis") to modern-day chanteuse Laura Mam—are hung on the walls. Striped laundry bags by Rehash Trash (which transforms roadside rubbish into stylish homeware), dappled-pink Buddha statues, and refillable bottles of house-made Jaya Organics toiletries all root you firmly in Cambodia. How about the food and drink? At Deco restaurant there isn’t a dish which we can’t rave about; from smashed avocado and perfectly poached eggs sprinkled with a crunchy pistachio dukkah at breakfast to suppers of traditional Khmer fish curry amok reimagined as a sophisticated mushroom- and chickpea-packed vegan pasta dish. Cocktails—such as raspberry-mint lemonade with a gin, vodka, and elderflower kick—are refreshing and delivered with panache. Chef Bunna Arthireach’s sensational cooking combined with a dramatic glasshouse make Deco is a pull in its own right. What’s the crowd like?Book-smart groups of NGO-worker pals chatting cult novels and art on weekend mini breaks, couples in Dodo Bar Or fringed halter maxi-dresses and Vilebrequin swim shorts, and bohemian families who explore Angkor at dawn and spend afternoons larking around in the pool. Anything to say about the service?Genuine and exacting; the staff takes the time to get to know each guest, meaning their recommendations (say a jaunt to one of Angkor’s lesser-visited temples through the countryside at golden hour, past thatch-topped restaurants and lotus-flower-filled lakes) always feel personal. What’s the neighborhood scene like?Street 30 is ever so slightly away from the main tourist drag, but everywhere you’d want to go is an easy five- to 20-minute tuk-tuk ride away—be it the Angkor National Museum, the world’s most famous temple complex, astonishing acrobatic performances at Phare circus, or the neon-lit bars of Pub Street. Our suggestion: Skip the main drag and sip kombucha Mojitos at Shanghai-sultry speakeasy Miss Wong instead. Anything else to add?In a brilliant, more-hotels-should-do-it touch, laundry and an hour-long daily spa treatment are included in the incredibly reasonable room rate (a foot massage is just the thing after a day’s temple-hopping). Anything you would change?Honestly, we don’t think so. Is it worth it?Absolutely. It's a feel-good hotel through and through, from the light and breezy tropicana decor to the delicious Cambodian fusion food. Plus, a stay genuinely contributes to the community, as profits support four local NGOs. Prepare to wax lyrical to friends when you get home (but don’t tell too many people, otherwise getting a room on a future visit could prove tricky)." - Ianthe Butt

21 Hotels We're Dreaming of Returning To

"I dream of returning to Jaya House River Park in Siem Reap on an almost daily basis, for so many reasons, but above all, for the staff. I'm not exaggerating when I say that every single member of the team, the GM, the bartender, the gardeners, is a delight. So warm, so welcoming, and the kicker is, it's not at all phony or rehearsed. Their attitude is infectious, being there actually makes you a happier, more considerate person, at least for the duration of your stay."

At These Hotels, the Decor Tells a Hidden Story

"When it came time for Jaya House Angkor Park (doubles from $179) in Siem Reap to decorate, the hotel tapped a handful of artists who had trained at the Small Art School (an NGO that provides free classes to local kids) to create portraits of '60s Khmer music legends, highlighting the swinging scene of Cambodia's Golden Era, a period overshadowed by the subsequent Khmer Rouge regime."

Stayed at this hotel for a few nights - overall, I’m happy I chose it. The location is great, right by the beach, so waking up to sea sounds was a treat. The room was clean, bed comfortable, and everything worked as expected. Staff were friendly and helpful, always ready to assist. Breakfast was good, with enough variety so you don’t get bored. There’s also a spa and pool- nice extras for relaxing days. If I had to point out a downside: some parts of the hotel feel a bit worn, furniture could use updating. And the shower was a little small but overall it didn’t ruin my stay. If you want a solid beach hotel with good service and comfort, this one is worth checking out.

From the moment we arrived at Jaya House River Hotel, it was clear that this was no ordinary stay. We have travelled widely, but the welcome here transcended anything we have ever experienced in a hotel. It wasn’t just a greeting at the door; it was the sense of being genuinely embraced into a family. |What sets Jaya House apart is that it doesn’t try to “set itself apart”. Where other hotels make claims about being a cut above, this place simply ‘is’. The environment is beautiful, two serene pools, a restaurant that invites lingering, rooms crafted with care, but it is the people and the philosophy behind it all that leaves the deepest impression. |The owner, Christian, has infused the hotel with a vision that goes beyond hospitality, From planting trees across Siem Reap to eliminating disposable plastics, his commitment to sustainability is woven into every detail. It gives the sense that you are part of something bigger, something that truly matters.|And then, of course, there are the extraordinary staff:attentive, thoughtful, and genuinely warm. Every interaction carried the feeling of being welcomed home. The week we spent here was not only relaxing and restorative, it was also unforgettable in its depth of kindness. |You can travel the world searching for the best hotels, but ultimately what brings you home is family. At Jaya House, we found that rarest of treasures: a family feel in its truest sense.

My husband and I stayed at the Jaya House hotel for two nights, but I so wish we had been able to stay longer!! The staff were incredible (Extra special thanks to Christian, Ra, Jimmy, David, and Finn!!), food was excellent (both in restaurant and room service), and the amenities are to die for. The room itself was absolutely perfect with minibar service and a lovely coffee/tea spread, plunge pool that was perfect after spending a day seeing temples, and a sitting area that was perfect for watching some TV and relaxing before going to dinner or for a massage (that was thoughtfully booked for us by the hotel at whatever time we wished in the spa).||One of the very special things about this hotel is the complete commitment to sustainability. On the shuttle from the airport to the hotel, we were given our own stainless steel water bottles (which you keep with you throughout the trip to stay hydrated, and they refill for you even throughout the tours of the temples!) that they also give you to take home with you. All of the shower products and toiletries are sustainable, and their commitment to the environment is shown with such care. ||Lastly, our tour guide, Lee, was so wonderful showing us around all of the temples (Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, and Ta Prohm temple) telling us about the history, architecture, and stories surrounding all of the sites. The tuktuk ride between all areas was so relaxing with a nice breeze, refills of our water bottles, and nice cold towels to help escape the heat. We're already planning to bring our families back to this amazing place and will absolutely be staying at the Jaya House hotel!

We stayed at Jaya House for 2 short nights and could have easily stayed a week! Like many before us mentioned there were so many special touches that made our stay truly extraordinary and memorable. Coming off a week long river boat trip the complimentary laundry was very much appreciated and they were so prompt and efficient with it. Breakfast was delicious with a large a la carte menu to choose from and we also enjoyed two lunches in the restaurant. The included Tuk-Tuks that drive you around town were also a wonderful amenity and so fun! (cold towels are even carried by the drivers)|We spent some time one afternoon at one of their two pools and were served fresh ginger tea and pandan ice cream - so delicious. We also loved the pandan tea and Anna at the Guest Assistant’s desk thoughtfully delivered us a bag each to take home with us. |Arrival or departure airport transfer (in a luxury van), unlimited tea and coffee around the resort and mini bar (including Tiger beer) is also included in the rate and you’re presented with a lovely stainless steel water bottle to use throughout your stay. Comp daily massages were a real treat and the spa was lovely. We booked a temple tour through the hotel and were very happy with our guide and all the arrangements (early morning coffee and croissants hot out of the oven), hotel tuk-tuk driver with never ending cold towels at hand, knowledgeable guide and even a 4 course lunch included back at the hotel. |It’s honestly hard to find anything negative to say about Jaya House. There were a few mosquitoes around but they fog regularly and the staff will spray your arms and legs with their organic repellent before you leave the property. We visited the roof top bar for happy hour our first night but found it very hot and since there’s no view we headed out (there are plenty of great bars and restaurants in Siem Reap to visit so that wasn’t really a negative.) I can’t imagine a better place to stay in Siem Reap - price was very reasonable with all the value added amenities and location on the river was great too. You will not regret booking this hotel if you’re visiting Siem Reap!||Room was spacious and comfortable and the staff were so warm and friendly and great at remembering names and preferences.

We recently stayed at Jaya House River Park Hotel and were blown away by the experience. Every single staff member we encountered was exceptional - warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. They went above and beyond to assist us with a situation we needed help with, handling it with such care and professionalism. The food was fantastic and fresh every day, the rooms were spotless (perfect for a clean freak like me), and the hotel grounds and surrounds were simply beautiful and so well kept - a true haven to relax in. A big thank you to Chris and Christopher for making our stay extra special. Will definitely be back !

Fantastic, absolutely no hesitation recommending this hotel. The staff are extraordinarily attentive, the rooms are really comfortable, the pools and grounds are a genuine oasis. The spa centre has been glorious. On top of this they get so many of the little things right to make sure you have as friction-free a stay as possible.

Jaya House is incredibly a hidden gem. I already heard so many great things about this place but even so the experience here was exceptional. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. All their staff are courteous and always greeting you. The thoughtfulness of offering you a drink when you are waiting in the lobby or sitting by the pool side and also offering a mosquito spray everytime you head out. The whole place smells so good too! The location is near where you want to be - near the temples and a walking distance to the night market. This is now my favorite place in Siem Reap. Highly highly recommended! 😊
