Jay’s Beef never disappoints! Their Italian beef is absolutely delicious — I went with sweet peppers and it was prepared perfectly. The sandwich was dipped just right, not overly soaked but definitely not dry, exactly how a beef should be. The flavors were spot on and the bread held up beautifully. The fries were just as impressive — perfectly salted, crisp, and golden, the ideal side to a great beef. Every bite reminded me why Jay’s is a go-to spot. Consistent quality, amazing taste, and always satisfying. Highly recommend!

Solid Italian Beef. Fries were piping hot fresh and very delicious. Service was top tier. The workers were very professional & very kind. To be 100% honest, i prefer some other locations that have a bit more flavor to their beef, but still have a lot of respect for this Jays location. The neighborhood support for this spot is legendary. Bathrooms were a bit run down. Lock didn't work in the men's bathroom stall.

I grew up visiting the location that was in Mt Prospect/Des Plaines and was sad when it closed. Recently I heard the Harwood Heights location is still open. My brother, sister, nephew, and I went for a nostalgic experience. It was awesome to see Frank, the owner, still active behind the counter taking orders and making beef sandwhichs. Truely a great experience and Yes, after 30 years the taste is still the best in all Chicago.

Jay’s Beef is the best in the area, and never disappoints. Italian beef and sausage were my favorite 🤩. Highly recommend this place for anyone who loves Chicago style sandwiches and someone who is rush in hunger. Staffs were super friendly and i honestly felt so welcomed here. Definitely will be back to Jay’s !

First time in there. Had the grilled chicken sandwich it was excellent. Very tasty marinated chicken on Italian bread with lettuce tomato and mayo. Nice big sandwich too.. old school feel

I joined a Facebook page dedicated to Chicago Italian beef sandwiches and this is one beloved spot and they are 100% spot on. The outside has a nice patio area that has to be a big draw in the summer. The inside is spacious and clean. The staff is friendly and typically old school knowing the lingo to deliver the beef just the way you like it. The sandwiches one of the largest I’ve seen and it PACKED with meat-I mean PACKED. The giardinara is the freshest I’ve seen and the taste is unforgettable with the right amount of heat and flavor. The hot oil also offers the exact balance. The heat doesn’t hit you, it sits nicely blended with the peppers and veggies. The fries were fried to perfection with a delicious crisp on the outside and a fluffy potato on the inside. This is not around the corner for me but this is going to be the place I go to when I want a really good beef.

When I’m craving Italian beef, I always go to Jay’s beef, it never disappoints. I like to order it with sweet peppers and spicy peppers on the side.

Came here for the first time and got just an Italian beef, dipped, with hot peppers. I wanted to see how it compares to the other Italian beef joints I've had. My experience was great. The beef was delicious. It's not my #1, but it does land in my top 5. The price seemed a bit high, but nothing crazy. The flavor was delicious, and I really liked the homemade giardiniera that they seemed to use. I would highly recommend this place if you're in the area.

I've heard from multiple people that this is their best beef in Chicago so I had to give it a try. At first bite it didn't blow me away but as I kept eating, the more I liked it. As of 12/2024 the beef is $8 but they load it up, it's a huge portion, I didn't eat all of it but I was still full/satisfied. I brought some to my mom and she liked it too (and she's a picky eater). Fries were great. Staff is friendly/cool. There are tables in there and steady flow of people. They have a nice big screen TV with ESPN or sports on. They have bathrooms I went back twice in one week, and tried a hot dog last time and loved it. Great spot!!

Stopped in this place right after I flew in from DC. I was told I had to try and Italian Beef Sandwich while in Chicago and found this spot based on the reviews. I was pleasantly surprised. I told the guys behind the counter it was my first time and they made sure I had the perfect sandwich to get the full experience. I will definitely come back here!

I hadn't been here in about 15+ years. Finally came back. Ordered a sweet beef, hot beef, chicken tenders, & fries for $30. Everything was great! Prices are pretty low given the crazy inflation going on right now. Quick service. Will definitely be back

Jay's Beef was so delicious and were very accommodating. I haven't been back in Chicago since discovering that I can't have gluten, so I had to get the beef on a bed of French fries instead of bread. One of the greatest decisions of my life. They have the type of fries that just tastes so delicious and is the perfect texture. Crispy and soft at the same time. Real mom and pop feel in the restaurant. Definitely one of the better beefs in the city.

Hands down the BEST Italian beef in all of Chicago, classic Chicago ambiance. Take your nonna, your mom, your pops, your children and your money here. I can bet you this will be the best beef you've ever laid your buds on. I came here with my parents and met Jay the owner. This man is the most humble, down to earth man -- he's a generous guy and takes care of his place and his people. A quality owner and quality products says a lot about your dollar if you spend it here.

Been eating at Jays on and off since the 90's and it never seems to change. The Beef is packed to the max much more so than most places with quality meat. I didn't even put peppers on it, which was on brain fart on my behalf and I didn't even notice it because it was still so good. This just proves that if you use quality Ingredients you do not need to really put anything on it. Also I forgot how big their large fries are. Its a monstrosity of a bag that even I had to labor to finish it all. But I did. Overall its a great quality of beef that deserves to be mentioned among the greats. 4.5 stars.

Jays is still one of the best left in this city and is not like being in a taqueria this is a big plus these days

best tasting, its a large amount of beef, more than portillos and johnnies put together enough beef for 2 sandwiches for the money its the best, you cannot squeeze the bun closed like the other beef places

Decided to drive out and check if Jay's was worthy of being in the top ranked Italian beef in Chicago. In my opinion, Italian beef was pretty bland, and it was nothing special. On a positive note, the restaurant was clean and everyone was super nice. It's just not worthy of being in the top selection of Italian beef choices in Chicago. The only reason we tried it was due to a WGN contest, and I've lost my faith in those results.

Gor to try Jays for the first time. Of course, I had to try their Italian Beef. Got it with hot peppers and dipped. It was a good Italian beef. They give a good amount on the sandwich. Flavorful. The peppers were just okay. The dipped sandwich was just right. Overall, it was very good and among the better Italian beef sandwiches around. Got my food fast. Friendly service. Parking can be a little tight. Nice detour spot for a quick meal when in the area.

Best Beef in town and awesome customer service! I've been going there for over 20 years and still as good as the first time I had them

Sooo...there's a debate on Facebook re which Italian Beef joint is da best. The camp seems to be divided between Portillo's and Buona...but I'm not going to discuss them here, this is just a chunk of preamble because several posts said "hey, Jay's is da place!". So I happened to be heading north on Narragansett from Berwyn and decided to check it out. Boy...what a surprise, and this'll be a surprise for Facebook posters who like 'em. As you know, I pull no punches. I been around for years, used to live on the Near West Side where Italian food...is great. I was spoiled because there was a fellow who sold humongous beef sandwiches right down the block and many a morning spent in the Psych 101 or other lecture hall at UICC (before they dropped the final C) found me way in the back enjoying a really great Italian Beef. Thus, I've become a connoisseur, though I've not actually tried ALL the local establishments...s'not on my bucket list.. Parked across the street, on the east side, easier to continue heading north, eh? As I walked in there was a couple having a snack? lunch? at one of the booths, and a young woman enjoying some Italian Ice; I dint check that out, this review is ONLY for the items listed below. Ahem. My order consisted of (was INTENDED to be): * an Italian Beef, dipped, drowned, suffocated, juicy, tender, tasty * french fries, cooked well, also tasty, a bit greasy? * American cheeseburger, also tasty, ketchup only, veggies on the side, thank you * no drinks, just food As usual, I ordered two sets of fries, one to eat haha on the way back and another to share with a friend, who like cheeseburgers; that's another story...but here's the blow-by-blow: Fries. I cannot describe them exactly except to say...they're quite different. VERY potatoe-y, as if they're made with some kinda instant? mashed potatoes formed into typical fries. Unpleasant, no real taste at all other than mushy potatoe; unsalted, not greasy. (ratings are later in the review..) TWO large orders. Cheeseburger. Multiple issues. Very thin slice? chunk? of 'beef' on an untoasted bun of some sort, not the usual, rather doughy, overly thick. Barely any cheese when I reheated it (1. separate the 'meat' from the bun, reheat in da microwave then 13 seconds on the bun and reassemble). Veggies on the side -- two small styrofoam cups with a) chopped lettuce (whatever happened to just a lettuce leaf?) and b) a teensy slice of tomatoe and two slices of (homemade?) non-pickle slices. which smelled old. And then there was da beef sammich. There IS some good news: was nice 'n tender. That's the ONLY redeeming quality. Was totally tasteless, though of a good quantity. Made a point of asking HOW they dunk, whether the beef resided IN the (should be au jus..) before being slapped onto the bun. Which was not, AFAIK, from Turano. Utilized a (not so secret) method of imparting real beef flavor to it. That's pretty much it. To summarize: * bad fries, mushy on the inside, no tasted * bad burger (where's the beef?) and bun from who knows where * bad 'pickle', tomato. OH! almost forgot the 'jardiniere'.. THAT was apparently also 'homemade' and consisted of jalapeno peppers? in olive oil, the styrofoam container of which was (incorrectly) wrapped in a piece of wax paper so of course the lid came loose and olive oil permeated the bag. (proper closure is to wrap in aluminum foil....ahem) * and, despite the quantity and tenderness, bad beef and bun. And ALL THIS for only....$23. Wow. I'd prefer to give Jay's three stars, but preceded by a negative sign. YELP web guys, take note, please, amend your rating system. Note this review pertains ONLY to the (undrowned, tasteless) 'Italian' beef, the fries, the cheeseburger, the veggies and jardiniere. I strongly suspect that Jay's proximity to Wright College and student's...uninformed tastebuds, let's say....contribute to what appears to be a serious decline in overall quantity, but not having tried this prior to Now I really can't say what t'was like originally.... maybe a new owner took over at some point? quality generally declines when that happens. But. DIS guy knows Nada about how an Italian Beef should look, taste, be presented and constructed. Their other items Might be O-kay, I just dunno, and will never know because I ain't-a gonna ever go back there. Youse out there, the great unwashed public, can go try it for yerselves, don't just take my word for it. But...others have, I do believe. PS Gene 'n Jude's Also ain't as good as was when I journyed out there, but don't worry, I have no plans to check them out to verify what I remember from years ago. Unless they bribe me sufficiently... (ha). There ya go. Caveat emptor and buon appetito.

I am so happy that we live very close to Jay's. Recently on a small road trip we had to get Portillo's as there was not much of a choice that day traveling to the suburbs west of our area. Portillo's is horrible! I will never go there again! I love Jay's beef. The sandwich has a huge portion of beef & the cooked peppers are great! Different colors & not the typical green pepper. The extra gravy on the side is wonderful! When we went to Portillo's there is hardly any beef & It is boring & not fresh! Jay's is the best in every way!! If you want a top of the line delicious beef sandwich get it at Jay's. The other food is very good too! Keep up the great work everyone at Jays'!

Working my way through the top-of-the-list Italian Beef sandos in Chicago. This particular stop was more accidental than intended as I was on my way to somewhere else when I stumbled upon their place. A happy coincidence going my way! I pulled into the parking lot @ 11:30 am mid-week. Hardly anyone in the parking lot or seated inside....hummmm, this place can't that good since no one was there near the hallowed lunch hour. 15 minutes after I ordered, the parking lot and order line is full. Go figure. Ordered the Italian Beef, dipped, with a side of onion rings. The staff of 2-3 were courteous and prompt. NO 'Effing around' behind this counter, they all meant business. Hella efficient back there. The onion rings are as good as I have had anywhere. Steaming, roof-of-the -mouth burning hot and crunchy as hell. N-i-c-e! Dipped in ketchup and I am in heaven. Highly Recommended! The Dipped Beef sando was e-x-c-e-l-l-e-n-t! Piled high with lots of well-seasoned thinly-sliced meat while the au jus sopped up by the bun was just right, not too bland, but also not too salty. A beer with this delicious combo would have made my meal complete, but hey, I wasn't here for the beer (or was I ?). All in all, if I am ever within striking distance of this venue, I am sure to darken their doorstep in the near future.

Jays is 100% my beef. I grew up on Johnnies and got introduced to Jays after high school. Went back for my first time post covid (I've since moved out of state and came for a visit). Just as good as it used to be. I got the combo and split it with my pal and I couldn't have been happier. Comin back to visit home, I stay close to a portillos and it's not even close to filling my craving, I got no problem driving 30 minutes for a juicy jays beef

The beef and combo are good and a big sandwich for the money!! My only complaint is it's FITHY DIRTY IN THERE FLOIRS TABLES!! Cmon guts get it together

I had the beef, it was just OK. I asked for it with hot pepper and cheese but got mild peppers and no cheese. I was too hungry to complain but that disappointed me.

Born and raised on the northside been living here for 52 years and I've had a lot of beef sandwiches from a lot of places but Jays is the best beef sandwich I've ever had in my life and every time I go it's just as good where other places one day might be good but the next time you go, it's not as good

Still dirty. Still rude. I can't believe I gave them another shot. The tables and floors are terrible. Napkins and wrappers still on tables. Had a meatball sub this time. Garbage. People rave because it used to be good. Not anymore.

Jay Italian beef and sausage has the best burger in Chicago. The place is simple and not too elegant. They have a mini parking lot and also a sign for disabled people. They have four tables outside to enjoy the view.  The table inside is too far from its other. Yeah of course for social distancing and health protocol. Kudos to the owner. The staff are friendly and accomodating. They recommend what's the best one in their menu. They have a lot of burgers on their menu where you can choose anything you want.  I ordered delicious hot dogs, a cheeseburger, Italian beef with fries, a meatball sandwich and Italian beef with sweet peppers. The taste of italian beef was so flavorful but I don't like the vegetables on it and the fries are pretty good. The meatball sandwich was delicious and juicy. It has a lot of ketchup so it becomes messy. I like Italian beef with sweet peppers. I like the combo of them sweet and flavorful. The bread was so good and it's not dry. Overall it's delicious.

Unique beef sandwich, more like a roast beef sandwich than a lot of other beef spots. I wish they had some vegetarian friendly options as the missus can't really find anything here so can only get when I am eating by myself.

A Chicago Staple so make it a point to stop in!! Great place to sit down and eat or pick up to go!!

Not sure how or why there are so many positive reviews for this place. Had their roast beef sandwich and it is one of the worst I've ever tried. I'd rather drive to Buona beef or Portillo's their beef is 100 times better. Pass by this joint trust me your not missing anything.

What a great experience. I went to Jay's last Saturday with two friends. We each had a beef. Their Italian Beef sandwiches are the real deal. Piled high with top quality beef on a wonderful roll. The beef is very flavorful and the fries are addictively good. We met Jay, who is so nice and has great stories. I look forward to eating at Jay's again.

I've been to their spot in the neighborhood on North Ave. in Wicker Park and have stopped in the one in Schiller Park. Both great places. These folks easily qualify for some of the very best Chicago Italian Beef/Combos in Chicago metro wide. They know what they're doing and they don't skimp on quality and authenticity one bit. Great places like Jay's aren't exactly 'falling offa trees dese days' as they say in Chicagoese. Jay's is one of the handful of great and I do mean really great beef stands left. On second thought, I would be remiss of me to refer to it as simply a beef stand, it's far more than that but that's just the Chicago way to describe it, a badge of honor. Today I stopped in their Harwood Heights location which I found out is the original. In fact, the family who started all was behind the counter doing what they do best. Mom, Dad and one of the sons. It may sound easy to make an Italian beef sandwiches but in truth it's an art form and not easy to perfect. The folks at Jay's have done just that. Like I said they aren't stingy on quality and they don't jip you on quantity to save a nickel. I was driving on Montrose Ave. with thoughts of pepper n' egg sandwiches in my head and just like that the Friday Catholic sandwich gods put Jay's right in front of me. You see, pepper n' egg sandwiches on a nice piece of Italian bread is a true Chicago thing. It's a Catholic guilt thing, tasty guilt and a thing you do on Fridays. It's a thing I got from my ma. Whenever I step into a place that does not have them I generally don't return, not that I'll be missed, but I like what I like. Now, again, a pepper n' egg may sound easy smeasy but there is an art to it. You can't just crack any ole egg and throw it on a piece of limp bread. NO! You gotta know what you're doing, you gotta respect it. This sandwich was nice and I mean nice. The bread was solid just like the one they use for their Italian beefs. It stands up to the job and doesn't fall apart on you when you lift it off the wax paper like too many do. The bread is key and it has real taste to it. Not sure where Jay's get's their but I assume it's been maybe as long as they've been around over some 40 years. There is a reason for that. Now the eggs are enough to fill the sandwich and fall over the sides which is what you want. These folks ain't chinzy that's for sure. The generous amount of scrambled eggs are seasoned nicely but what makes this pepper n' egg different is that they use color in the peppers. Most places use only chopped green peppers which is fine too. Jays goes the extra mile using multi- colored sweet peppers, green, red, yellow and sized to fill the sandwich out like a sweater on your girl on a Friday night drive-in date. But that's another story. If you know your sweet peppers you know these all taste differently hence the reason their sandwich is loaded with flavor. If you are a sad soul who can't taste the difference I suggest you make a doctors appointment and get your taste buds checked especially with this covid thing goin' around. I'm a salt guy but truthfully, I didn't even need to season my sandwich they took care of that. The fries were cut thick and cooked just right, not burnt to a crisp and soaked with oil but not limp and boring either, just the right amount of crisp and again, a full bag for a small order. I requested giardiniera, a Chicago staple condiment. If you don't already know I can't help you. You may be beyond help, but that's another story. When I ordered it I saw immediately it was HOMEMADE. I shouted that out because it's hard to come by these days. Sure, there's giardiniera but it's usually store bought and mass produced. It loses a bit. When someone cares enough about customers and their product to make their own they got it goin' on. I learned that the owners of Jay's make their own, primarily dad. When I inquired and ordered some to take home he gave a big container to take home for free. I bought another large one because they do sell it and yes it has huge flavor. I mean he gave me one for free! Who does that these days? Especially in this pandemic crazy world in which understandably, every dime in a business counts he gave it to me. I mean this is labor intensive and fresh as you get and he valued his work enough to give it to me. That to me is class. I dunno maybe it's just me but that just doesn't happen any more. The seating area is very observant of social distancing and that means the world to many of us. They even put a container of disinfectant wipes on each table so you can feel comfortable to have some there if you need and it means that they think of you. Everything is clean and the family is super friendly and we chopped it up (conversed) while my sandwich was being made. Several neighborhood customers stopped in while I was there and the pleasantries and 'how ya do's' were all around. A sign they have been around a long time and are true Chicago people. A true Chicago spot! Get there!

So I've been by this place many times and never tried it. One of the longtime beef spots in Chicagoland and many feel it's among the best. Decided to give it a shot while running some errands and stopped in around 2:30PM when it wasn't all that busy. So I order a combo with peppers ($8.50), a large order of fries ($2.95) and a large diet coke ($2.00). Wait time was minimal and I took a seat to check it out. The fries were pretty good - the order was one of the largest orders of French fries I've ever seen. There were three sizeable sweet pepper slices on the combo - and that combo was pretty sizeable as well. Now, so far so good, but my reason for four stars - and this might be a matter of opinion - it tasted alright, but it didn't really "wow" me. I like beefs and combos with a fair amount of Italian spices in the au jus - but there wasn't much. Similarly, the sausage was good - but not as robust flavor-wise as I typically seek. So kudos to Jay's for being a longtime Chicago favorite and a good value as well.

As someone who visited from NY jays was the best place to get a meatball sub!!! Big meatballs that fill your mouth with just the party you've been waiting for. Fresh jalapeños on top added the perfect combo!

One of the best tasting sandwiches re: beef, size, and jus. Not a huge fan of the celery jalapeño relish masquerading as hot peppers. Lacks any seasoning or vinegary bite and the peppers provide meh heat. Go sweet, without, or go home and add good, pepper based hot giardiniera to the sandwich.

And I didn't like it! Only complaint is about the food. Not a bun, but rubber! It's hard to chew your Italian sausages!

Beef Skimmpy today just had one Sun and it was packed. They need the mother working during the week age wrote the orders down on the bag instead of having you repeat itself 10 times. Sweet peppers nice and flavorful. Bread fresh from w local bakery unlike other places. Beef taste great alot I'd flavor. Staff friendly one must be the son.

The mac and cheese bites are the best I've had from any restaurant. The cooks are always on their A-game. Nothing special in terms of decoration but that is completely made up for in great tasting food. They have a patio that's great for nice days. It's awesome that there is an interesting selection for sides instead of just fries, but even the fries are delicious and well cooked.

Came here for late night dinner after a long day. Ordered takeout of an italian beef sandwich, spicy. This thing was MESSY, but OH SO GOOD. The beef was tender chunks and it was obvious the thing was stewed for hours. The entire roll was dunked in the broth and veggies crisp and spicy.

Love this neighborhood business. We've been going here forever to get beefs. Prices are still reasonable.

I went back last week and it wasn't good. I took 2 bites and gave it away. I got a beef extra juicy hot. It was prepared correctly, but there wasn't any flavor! The beef and the peppers were bland. Even the bread was gross & I love gravy bread. The fries were also too well done. Like they were possibly redropped. I went to Johnnie's as soon as I left this place to get my beef fix!!! I won't be returning here a 3rd time.

After hearing about Jay's from various people for years, I recently enjoyed my first beef there. I could not have been more pleased. The quality of their meat/beef was as good or better than any beef I've ever had. It's very clear to me that they make their beef in house. Places like Portillo's, on the other hand, have their beef delivered in tubs and contain MSG. The size of their beef also dwarfs the competition (literally at least twice the meat of Johnny's, Buona and Portillo's). After finishing our beefs inside, our group sat outside and eventually started chatting w/the owner, who was cleaning up the outdoor area. Talk about a nice, old school guy. After a few minutes of chatting, he proceeded to go inside and returned with 3 Italian ices (gratis) and when my buddy mentioned that his son loves Jay's Beefs he asked how he takes his beef. Next thing you know, he returns with a beef for my buddy to bring his son (also gratis). His hospitality, coupled with the quality and portions he is serving up, made our visit an incredibly enjoyable experience.

Been getting jays beef for years now.. still top notch beef and sausage. This mom and pop place is 10000 better than those sellouts over at portillos who give you 3oz beef sandwich. Nothing fancy about the building but oh my what spectacular beef. Ordered wet with hot and a fry. Great flavor of the beef, great gravy and fries were good. Only thing is I wish the peppers had more heat but that's just me. Great old school beef stand that stands the test of time. GO!!!!!

This is definitely one of the best spot that have delicious Italian beef and of course, nest to Portillo's. I definitely love their Italian beef and I've also been to this spot for a lot of times. I ordered an Italian beef for delivery last month and I did not expect that the food would look like the way it is sent to me and it was seriously not pleasing in the eyes nor delicious. I was kind of disappointed and I just used delivery on that particular day because I was too cold to go out. Recently, I went to the spot and ordered the same order I had the last time I ordered for delivery and the food definitely tastes better when eating it in the spot. It is hot and freshly cooked and it just basically taste better. The staffs in the place are also friendly and the place has a nice atmosphere and I really enjoyed everything. If you are also planning to have a food from this spot, I highly recommend to go in the store instead of delivery for better experience.

There is no place that makes an Italian Beef sandwich better than they do in Chicago, and Jay's has one of the best! When in Chicago, I always try and make a stop at Jay's for my fix for an Italian beef with sweet peppers. The beef is tender with very little fat and the au jus beef stock that the sandwich is dipped is so flavorful that it is simply out of this world. Even better, their sandwich size portion is fairly large compared to many of their competitors. They don't offer a "meal combo", but you can get very full when you add fries and a drink for less than $15. Best Italian beef sandwich! Just wish they had better French fries. Also try the meatball sandwich, highly recommend!
