The 14 Best Bars In Amsterdam - Amsterdam - The Infatuation

"We’d normally steer you away from Leidseplein with its forgettable steakhouses, pseudo-taquerias, and generic pubs catering to revelers stumbling red-eyed from nearby coffee shops. But nightly shows at this local jazz haunt deliver some surprising performances that are worth checking out. Main acts are listed on their website and there’s sometimes a cover charge, but if you saunter in by happenstance, you can experience jazz in its truest form while musicians improvise in the moment (some even get called up from the crowd). It can get packed quickly and no food is served, so come early with a full stomach if you plan to stay awhile. Sit on the stools by the bar if you don’t want to wait too long between drinks once it starts to get lively." - paolo espanola

DONT GO, NIET GAAN ECHT VERSCHRIKKELIJK!!‼️ We went here on New Year’s Eve and had a terrible experience. We paid €20 per person just to get in, only to find no available seating at all. Instead, we were packed in so tightly that you could barely move. It was impossible to enjoy a drink without spilling it, let alone relax or enjoy the music. For a jazz bar, the atmosphere was completely wrong: overcrowded, chaotic, and poorly managed. The staff acted strangely and unprofessionally, which only made things worse. Even more concerning was the lack of ID checks: there were clearly underage kids (around 16) inside, drunk and treating the place like a nightclub. Meanwhile, I’m 19 and usually get checked everywhere because I look young. Overall, it felt like a cash grab rather than a genuine jazz experience. Extremely disappointing and not worth the money. I would strongly recommend not going, especially on special nights like New Year’s Eve.

WATCH YOUR BACK WITH THE BASS GUY IN THE PICTURES. It would have been a great night out if it weren't for the band's bass player. During the break, when grabbing a drink from the bar, he molested my mother-in-law. Not once, twice, he touched her rear and still said something she didn't understand. While playing after the break, he went to play near her, just as if he could do anything he liked. Disgusting attitude that provoked a reaction in my husband directly to him. I also went to the bar to speak with the employees, and the answer was "yeah yeah" and an awkward face. By his attitude, I am sure this is not the first time this guy has such a behaviour. The bar management should really check on who is brought on stage and condemn any type of harassment. Unfortunately this wasn't the case, as we passed by the bar 5 minutes after the event and the band kept playing as if nothing happened. Never coming back to this place.

Despite it being jam-packed, we were able to get drinks pretty quickly. They were solid. The atmosphere was super fun and the music was great. We were never able to get a proper table but we made friends and had a great night.

My wife and I were craving going to a live jazz place for a while. It’s hard in Toronto cos they’re far. We were able to walk to this place late one night. Was very pleased with everything - the ambience, decor, the music, obviously, and especially the service. The young person who served us was very diligent. Honestly, I was blown away by the way we were treated everywhere in Amsterdam and nearby. Everyone was so friendly and accepting. We really enjoyed ourselves here. I wish we could go back to Amsterdam soon. One of the best vacations ever.

Very relaxed and artistic vibe. Its quaint and is worth waiting in line for. Music was beyond. And we were there on a Thursday.

Hands down, one of the best jazz venues I’ve ever been to — and I’ve yet to find anywhere that tops it. The energy, the atmosphere, and most importantly, the music are simply unmatched. The talent on stage is world-class, and the connection between the performers and the audience creates something truly special. Whether you’re a lifelong jazz fan or just dipping your toes into the scene, The Jazz Cafe delivers an unforgettable experience every time. A must-visit for anyone who loves live music — this place sets the bar

This was our first time visiting Cafe Alto and it was absolutely wonderful! The band were brilliant and their music was mesmerising. We managed to get 2 seats which were needed as I'm disabled! The waitress was lovely and gave us a cocktail menu and took our drink orders. It's a tiny venue but it's cosy and you get completely lost in the music! The only downside was the bassist had to keep shushing the crowd as so many people were talking and not listening. Also shout-out to the lovely staff member on the door for being so kind :)

Google
Jazz Cafe Alto is a tiny, no-frills spot, but that's a huge part of its charm. Yes, it's small, and yes, it gets packed, but the atmosphere is electric and the music is absolutely top-notch. The live music is the real draw—incredible performances in such an intimate setting. It feels like you're getting a private show. Beyond the music, the staff is wonderful. They manage the crowd with grace and efficiency, making everyone feel welcome. A special shout-out to Toby on the door—he's incredibly friendly, helpful, and keeps the whole place running smoothly, even when it's standing-room-only. If you're looking for a sterile, spacious venue, this isn't it. But if you want a cozy, authentic, and high-energy Amsterdam jazz experience with genuinely great people, Jazz Cafe Alto is the place to be! Highly recommended.

Yelp
Small, intimate, great bartender and great music. What else do you want? It gets crowded so go early, grab a drink and sit up front against the wall at a small table. Relax and enjoy. Eventually a waitress will swing by and you can get another drink.

Yelp
Cafe Alto has been here as long as I remember. Music every night and all through the summer when many places close. Visiting jazz celebs pass through on occasion as well as many of the best local players. It's a late night place, on Fridays music lasts til 3am!!!! Every night is different so there is something for just about everyone throughout the week.

Yelp
I love this place! I stopped by every night i was in AMS. Talent is so impressive! Bartenders and staff are really sweet. Prices for drinks are better than most places in the area.

Yelp
It's hard to add much to these other reviews. This place is terrific! I loved it. I actually asked the bartender (really friendly guy) to recommend an IPA...he said Lagunitas! I knew I was at home! Small and intimate with really solid talent in stage. 30 years ago you would say it's a smoky environment. Not anymore but the vibe harkens back to another era. No cover charge. It doesn't get any better than this...anywhere!

Yelp
Waiting for Melkweg Club to open its doors, my friend and I wandered around looking for something to do. Expensive beers did not really interest us, but we walked by this place and it seemed homey, something that reminded us of a jazz club or dive in New York. I walked up to the door, heard live blues music, and immediately paid the 5 Euro cover when asked. My friend was not sure what had occurred, but suddenly realized what a good decision we had made. The live blues band played many of the classics and the frontman guitarists turned out to be from Nashville, Tennessee. Us two Americans were wholly impressed to witness a Southern blues man play in Amsterdam of all places. The crowd included people in their mid 20s and a bit older crowd. It got a bit crowded, but there was standing room. Order some beers and simply enjoy the music.

Yelp
Really cool bar, In Amsterdam for my birthday went to see a local band at cafe alto, drums, double bass and keys, blown away by the quality of musicianship of this band (sorry cant remember they're name) they were awesome I would have happily paid to watch. The drinks are a bit pricey €8 for a spirit and mixer but with music like this for free you can't complain. If you love jazz get down there.

Yelp
The greatest bar I've ever went to! If I could make it 11/10 I would've! Great music, espesically live! Great bands and great people visiting! Awfully great bar, being a jazz fan I dig it a lot!

Yelp
By far my favourite jazz bar in Amsterdam. Love the cozy interior, very well suited for a jazz bar. The location is in a very touristy area, but it's definitely a gem. The owner is super friendly and helpful. The live jazz music is always of top quality. I would HIGHLY SUGGEST!

Yelp
Perfect place for live jazz while visiting Amsterdam. The atmosphere is very relaxed in this small club/bar. The staff is friendly and the drinks are reasonable. Loved the old pictures and posters that cover the walls and ceilings! Definitely worth a stop!
